The NeighborhoodWaitarere Beach, one of the best-kept secrets of the North Islands west coast is regarded as the place to go when you want to get away from it all. Within easy commuting distance from New Zealand's Capital city Wellington, and from nearby Palmerston North, Waitarere beach is an ideal spot for either a weekend getaway or as a permanent residence. The Waitarere Beach community includes a well-stocked 4 Square Store, takeaways, café and restaurant. Levin, the nearest town is 10 minutes easy drive should you need something more. The Waitarere beach is wide and sandy allowing plenty of room for all your favourite beach activities including land yachts, 4 wheel motor bikes, surfing and fishing. The beach slowly drops off into deep water so there's plenty of safe paddling space for the youngsters and during the summer months, the surf club set up patrol. Waitarere Beach is also a popular fishing spot where Kohawai, Snapper, Groper, Gurnard, Flounder and Soul are the most common catches. The large, flat beach is ideal to back your boat with a tractor or a four-wheel drive. During the Whitebait season you can find a spot to sit your net at the Manawatu or the Ohau river mouths. A well-established forest surrounds Waitarere Beach and is host to several popular annual events such as the 'Great Forest Marathon'. Orienteering, and Mountain biking also make use of the forest floor and bring in a lot of interest from outside the Horowhenua. The forest is a popular spot to walk your dog and with the many tracks cutting through to the beach, you can enjoy the forest one way and the beach on the way back! Come and discover for yourself the peace and tranquillity of this waterfront paradise that is Waitarere Beach. Other Things to NoteThe $125 'security deposit' is to ensure the house is left clean and sound as found. To date we have never had a need to keep this.

Windy Waves is located at Waitarere Beach approximately 1 ½ hours drive north of Wellington. The upstairs bed and breakfast suite is located in its own private wing of a modern beach house with panoramic views to the sea and over the local beach community. The suite is spacious and the bathroom includes a spa bath and separate shower. Enjoy a quiet environment and easy walks to the beach, Hydrabad shipwreck, the forest and two cafes. This is our home away from home so should have all you might need! Guest AccessThe fenced section has a tree-house for kids on the front slope which we leave wild for the local insects and birds! The driveway is bumpy but once at the top there is plenty of space to park. The NeighborhoodWaitarere village is a classic sleepy beachside village where the kids can easily wander down to the Domain or the 4 Square for a bag of mixed lollies or an ice-cream. The Domain is at the end of our road with a playground, skate ramp and tennis courts. The local 4 Square, coffee shop, gift shop, Fish & Chips shop and Cafe are all within 5 mins walk. The beach is an easy 7-10min walk away. It is a safe surf beach, great for boogie boarding and surfing and over the summer months it has surf lifeguards on patrol. You can also surf-cast and dig for tuatua on the low tide. You can drive onto the beach too - we take our big car down loaded with the beach tent, boards, balls, cricket gear, togs and towels and a picnic and spend a day there - maybe even finish with Fish & Chips on the beach - bliss! Then home to watch the sun set with a glass of something cold on the deck - classic kiwi summer holiday! Getting AroundLevin township is 10min drive away and has all you need for groceries etc. Other Things to NoteWe are happy for your dog to join you - you will note the kennel there which our dog uses :-) They are also welcome inside but not on the furniture. And as we do, we expect you to clean up after them.

For those people heading north to Auckland, this offers a good place to break before your onward journey. The Cottage is a 3 min drive to Levin for guests to access groceries or restaurants. Other Things to NoteWe are less than 5 min drive from the start of the Kohitere Trig walk way. It is a strenuous bush walk. But if you would prefer a gentler stroll than the lake Papaitonga walk is a better option and has spectacular native bush. If you have young children than a visit to the Levin Adventure Park is recommended. Its free and has 90 five-star reviews on Trip Advisor. We are a 10-15 min drive from Owlcatraz Native Bird and Wildlife Park. Also on the must do list for the area is to drive your car along the sand at the waters edge along Waitarere Beach. Best to time this with low-tide though. If you would prefer a walk along a deserted beach we are about 10 minutes from Waikawa Beach.
