The SpaceThe Nest in Cable Bay is a recently opened, modern, cosy, eco-friendly, self-contained coastal retreat. Situated right on the Nelson coast (absolute waterfront location), the Nest enjoys unparalleled views overlooking Cable Bay, Pepin Island (the Maori name is Omaia), and beyond. You can take in the panoramic views from your bath, or over a glass of local award-winning wine on your deck. Here you can unwind in sunshine and solitude while only 20 minutes drive from central Nelson, frequently New Zealand's sunshine capital, and nationally acclaimed home to the arts and crafts. With no street lighting, strolls at night around Cable Bay offer a truly magnificent, starry sky-scape. Your boutique accommodation consists of your own detached and fully self-contained chalet, featuring a compact kitchen with bench top appliances (no full oven), well appointed lounge and dining area, bed-room, bathroom with walk in shower and a separate dressing room with bath overlooking the sea and Pepin Island farm. Re-cycled native Rimu flooring lends a special ambience, as does the nautical-styled decking befitting a seaside location. A particular feature of your Nest is the intimate mezzanine loft, for quiet times (reading, writing, listening to music, playing board games, etc, etc. or merely watching the tides ebb and flow. Your deck with its prime coastal views lends itself to breakfasting in the morning, sunbathing and perhaps savouring a glass of award winning local wine or maybe a locally hand crafted beer. Drinking water comes from a local stream and is UV treated and filtered. Waste water disposal is via our own bio treatment plant. Access to the beach and walking tracks are but a short stroll from the property. And you are literally one minute's meander through native bush to our coastal estuary with its abundance of bird life, e.g. Royal Spoon Bills, NZ native pigeons, Tuis and Fern birds (quite rare). There's an excellent local cafe (open during the summer months near the beach) and an outdoor adventure centre (horse trekking, 4 wheel drive trails, sky-wire, etc.,) situated nearby. Free to view TV is available for true addicts, as well as Apple TV and an eclectic selection of DVDs. While you will have wifi, please note there is NO nearby cell phone coverage - (after all, you're in a fairly remote rural/sea-scape environment so why not try getting disconnected ? ) Please note that our rates are somewhat higher than most surrounding B&B type properties.This is because not all holiday accommodation is created equal. Things we check out when staying in holiday accommodation are:- 1/ Is the accommodation stand alone ? Stand alone is best ! 2/ How close are neighbouring buildings, people ? Quiet is best ! 3/ How secluded is the property generally ? Garden ? 4/ How close is it to the surroundings that attracted you in the first place ?e.g. beach, walks, cafe, etc., ? Close is best ! 5/ How well appointed/modern are the accommodation / furnishings ? Purpose built is best ! 6/ What additional amenities are available at no extra cost e.g. bicycles, kayaks, row boat, BBQ, etc ? Free is best! So If you're looking for a select, convenient, yet truly unique escape from the hustle and bustle of city living, this place was created with just you in mind. Guest AccessGuests have their own detached and fully self-contained modern chalet with off road parking, deck and the opportunity to explore our sizeable, bush-clad, waterfront property (we have no near neighbours) Savour a local hand-crafted ale or a Nelson award winning glass of Sauvignon Blanc after returning from Kayaking, strolling or cycling around the local environs. For the more energetic among you, there is a number of more challenging walks available suitable for all levels of fitness. Awake to the sound of the magnificent bird song and perhaps the lowing of cattle on the nearby working farm (Pepin Island). For quiet times and the occasional rainy day, we have an extensive library of books, DVD'S, music and board-games. Aside from your complimentary Continental breakfast, we can provide all the ingredients (at a modest cost) for you to create a gourmet English brunch. If requested we can (mostly) source local fish, fine wines, hand-crafted local beers and a variety of juices. You only need ask! Cable Bay dining out options are limited to the local beach cafe in the summer months only. We recommend that you visit the Fresh Choice supermarket in Collingwood Street, Nelson, which endeavours to provide locally sourced food and beverages. Prego is a well stocked delicatessen close to the supermarket for those special items you may need. Interaction with GuestsWe only take single party bookings (maximum 2 adults) and in keeping with our own travel preferences, strive to be unobtrusive and leave guests to follow their own time-table, if any. We are of course available to offer information and advice about the Nelson/Able Tasman area and beyond. We welcome the opportunity to share our local knowledge, be it about fishing, swimming, diving, hiking, wineries, breweries, arts and crafts, places of historical interest, shopping, or just scenic rambles, etc, etc. We strongly urge you to call in at the I - Site (information centre) in central Nelson for full information about what the region has to offer and to book tours, etc. Join us at the end of the day for a complimentary glass of wine to discuss your needs. If we don't know the answer we'll certainly try to find it out! The NeighborhoodWhile Cable Bay is a small, cohesive and friendly community, aside from the superb scenery, we would have to say we just love the the absence of close neighbours! In this compact rural, seaside locale you can stroll about your extensive coastal native garden without being accosted by anything other than the prolific bird-life (Kereru, Bell-Birds, Tuis, Heron, etc). Short garden trails direct you to the water side and offer the opportunity for coastal walks or a variety of water sports (swimming, boating, fishing, diving etc). Sit on kayaks, a row-boat and unisex bicycles are available for your exclusive use at no extra charge, however please be aware that while we provide basic safety equipment, we take NO responsibility for any accidents or injuries resulting from your use of these amenities. Nelson is increasingly becoming a top choice for food and wine travel, says Wotif. The online booking agency has released its travel predictions for the year ahead, based on survey results and what it has observed on its site. Wotif spokesperson Kirsty La Bruniy said food and wine escapes were becoming more popular. Locations like Central Otago would continue to be popular but holidaymakers were increasingly likely to explore the smaller wine regions like Nelson, which made it one of the top three best domestic destinations in Wotif's "How Are You Travelling Survey", La Bruniy said. Ad Feedback Getting AroundIn keeping with being a secluded and tranquil rural/coastal environment, there is NO public transport so guests without a vehicle are advised to hire a car in Nelson city (or at the airport some 22 kilometres away). To find The Nest (from the airport), drive towards Nelson along the waterfront (Rocks Road), keeping the sea on your left. Keep bearing left and bypass Nelson city and head North on State Highway 6 in the direction of Picton/Blenheim. After about 20 minutes you will see a signpost on your left directing you to Cable Bay. Set your vehicle trip mileage for 6.82 kilometres and you will find us 6.82 kilometres down this road on the right (look for the number 682 on our letter box). If you find yourself at Hira, a small settlement about 500 metres PAST the Cable Bay turn off, you need to turn around and take the first right on the road back towards Nelson. Free off street parking is of course provided at the Nest. Other Things to NoteOur focus here at The Nest is to ensure you have a care-free, relaxing and memorable stay so you can return home rested and refreshed, ready to cope with the hurly burly of life.

Ngaire & Jim (Cable Bay Nest) Your Nest in Cable Bay is absolute waterfront and enjoys expansive sea and Island views. It's located approximately 25 minutes drive North of Nelson (around 2,500 sunshine hours per year) and approximately 35 minutes drive from Nelson airport. Sunshine, art, wine (25 wineries), boutique breweries and adventure make Nelson a lifestyle mecca with year round holiday ambience. The second oldest city in the country, Nelson was settled by Europeans in 1841. The original inhabitants (Maori) of the area are represented by 6 tribal groups, namely Ngati Kuia, Ngati Toa, Ngati Rarua, Ngati Tama, Ngati Koata and Te Atiawa. The largest fishing seaport in Australasia, Nelson's abundance of fresh seafood coupled with award winning local wines makes for a truly memorable gourmet experience. Please note there is no public transport servicing Cable Bay so if you don't have your own car you will need to hire one. Off street parking is available. Cable Bay is a coastal / rural enclave - a tranquil, small community with a focus on beach and water activities e.g. boating, kayaking, swimming, fishing, diving, etc. It takes its name from the site of the first telegraph cable linking New Zealand with the rest of the world (1876). As befits a partially estuarine environment, it is home to many native birds, some of which are quite rare e.g. Royal Spoon Bills, Fern birds, etc. Nearby there is an adventure centre that offers horse trekking, 4WD, trails, sky wire rides and paint ball warfare, etc, etc. A Kayak tour operator is similarly close by, as is a licensed small cafe on Cable Bay foreshore (closed over Winter).The absence of street -lights means guests usually have an impressive starry night-scape and there is a variety of walks nearby suitable for all levels of fitness..Those less energetically inclined can relax on their private deck, maybe with a chilled glass of award winning local Sauvignon Blanc, or meander through our extensive, secluded native garden. We have Kayaks and unisex bicycles you can borrow but you do so entirely at your own risk. We are fond of describing Cable Bay as the way the world was before it all went mad! We look forward to hosting you. Ngaire and Jim.

                                  Bach 35 is located in one of the first holiday home communities in the Far North. Seaview Road in Cable Bay was as popular in the early 1950s as it is today. It features an "L" shape with a steady incline. Almost every property is both close to the coastline and enjoys a grandstand view of the entire Bay. Bach 35 is no exception. Originally constructed in the late 50s the bach has undergone some key modernisation improvements. The owners wished to retain the traditional Kiwi bach charm whilst making more of the holiday lifestyle potential the property offered. A single door onto a narrow deck was replaced with sliding bifold doors. When open, the northern wall of the lounge becomes a giant moving picture of Doubtless Bay. The narrow deck was pushed out to 3 metres wide and a balustrade of part wall (privacy) and part glass installed. With fingers crossed, the old linoleum flooring was lifted. Beneath the sheets of period newspaper was an untouched wide-board Rimu floor. Sanded, polished and sealed, it has come up a treat. Cable Bay is the perfect location for a Far North family holiday. Along the coastline old Pohutukawa trees lean out over the safe swimming beach offering all day shade. One shady beach spot is beside the Council maintained child's playground, just at the end of Seaview Road. Rocky points have 100s of rock-pools ripe for exploring. Land-based fishermen regularly catch Snapper and Kahawai from these easily accessed points. At full tide the lagoon offers beginner snorkelers an ideal opportunity. Lots to see but never so deep that kids can't stand on the bottom and catch their breath. My reaction when I first stepped up onto the deck was one the owner had heard many times. Sparkling Doubtless Bay drew an unprompted "Wow". There's a sheltered BBQing spot on the deck...the sun sets on the left-hand side of the view...Bay changes colour as the sun sinks...all the ingredients to create holiday memories that will stay with you forever. Special conditions: Smoking outside only please. Extras: Cleaning (Required, NZ$50.00 per stay); NOTE: Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to: Bring your own linen (towels/sheets/tea towels);

                                      Originally a miner's cottage positioned across from the beach at Kaiaua in the Firth of Thames, this building has now found a new home in the winterless Far North. Our site is north facing, elevated with a fine view of Doubtless Bay and Cable Bay. Its an easy walk from the cottage to the shady Pohutukawas that line the pink sand at Cable Bay. Award winning Northland builders Coastal Homes undertook careful renovations in keeping with the character of the cottage, now a much grander little house than she was ever born to be. The kauri bathroom vanity top was originally the kitchen bench, and the rimu trim in the kitchen is from the original kitchen cabinets. There is now a lovely granite benchtop in the kitchen and a combination gas/induction cook-top. A gourmet delight, there are many spices and garnishes on the shelves which you're welcome to use; we just ask that should you use the last of anything, to please be kind enough to replace ready for the next occupants and owner. Fully renovated in 2012, the Miner's Cottage of Cable Bay is available to single guests or couples only. Sorry, no kids or pets. Theres a new modern bathroom with good water pressure. A mini sound system with docking station is available. Although no TV or phone, there is plenty to read on the bookshelves. Crisp clean bed and bath linen is supplied and the tariff covers a light clean upon your departure. The arhhh moment...sitting on the deck sipping your favourite beverage, watching the sun set or simply enjoying the many changing shades of Doubtless Bay; all accompanied by the sound of waves breaking on Cable Bay Beach....Don't worry, mobile phone reception is excellent. The Miner's Cottage is managed by Bachman. Special conditions: Smoking outside only. Extras: Cleaning (included); Linen (included);
