The SpaceThe name says it all. We have spent a good deal of time and resources over the past 8 years rewilding 20Ha of land by removing introduced and highly destructive possums – and other exotic pests - and are now enjoying the resulting regeneration of the native bush and the welcome return of many of our native birds and animals. If you have an interest in the conservation of New Zealand's natural biodiversity and the concepts of rewilding, then Possums' End is the place to stay. At night, weather permitting, we have dark skies that make for outstanding sky watching. Amazing views of the milky way can be seen and the Aurora Australis - the Southern Lights - may put in an appearance. To the naked eye the aurora is often seen as an eerie glow, but with a correctly set DSLR camera beautiful pictures can be taken - see some examples in our gallery taken at Hoopers Inlet, just a kilometer from Possums' End. We have developed an Aurora view point for the use of guests. Possums' End accommodation is a fully self contained single bedroom homestay adjacent to the owner's own house, backing on to regenerating bush. The lounge/diner/kitchenette has stunning views across Otago Harbour and beyond to the Pacific Ocean. The kitchenette is well appointed with a dual hob, microwave and ample crockery and cutlery. A generous bedroom with a queen sized bed leads to an en-suite with underfloor heating and a shower over a large relaxing bath. The utility room has an automatic top loading washing machine and an area to hang wet clothing. A small private outside area allows for al-fresco dining with views over Otago Harbour surrounded by bush and native birdlife. Guest AccessPossums' End is set on 20 hectares of regenerating bush. Guests are welcome to follow the marked track behind Possums' End to the top of the hill. This gives fantastic views over Otago Harbour and the Peninsula. The track is steep and slippery in places, guests take it at their own risk. 2 bicycles are also provided gratis for guests. Interaction with GuestsWe are always keen to meet guests and discuss our conservation work. Our easy to find website gives more information on Possums' End, including things to do. Your hosts, Wilma and David, like many of the Back Bays' locals, have a passion for the environment and are involved in selected species conservation. The closest village is Portobello which is 15 minutes drive away. The township has two restaurants, a café, a general store, and a couple of arty crafty shops. Getting AroundUse of your own vehicle to get to Mack's Cabin is essential. Please take care to stick to the left side of the road on our gravel roads. There is a regular bus service from Portobello to Dunedin city. A range of rental car companies operate from Dunedin City International Airport. The SpaceYou are looking at a home available over the summer period only. It's a cozy little wooden house with two bedrooms (one double, one single bed) and a sleep out (one double) that's the perfect place for older children, parents that seek some peace and quiet, or the grandparents. The sleep out has power but no water, and the main house's WiFi can be extended to be available up there (see house manual). The house is most suited to a small family with young children who appreciate the simple pleasures: a deck to lounge on, a lawn to roll on, a swing to swing on, and bird watching galore. We don't have a TV or iron ... why would you want to iron, you're on holiday! There is a vegetable patch and herb garden you are most welcome to pick from; we're not planting much new stuff this season given we will be away. Guest AccessThe whole place is yours! That's the house, the sleep out, the garden in front and back, a small porch for lounging in the front and a big one in the back. Interaction with GuestsWe're away for the holidays (hence the whole house being available), but have lovely neighbours who can help in emergencies and a good friend who's available most of the time. The NeighborhoodBroad Bay is a quiet, friendly community full of people who try to get away from the hustle and bustle of town. Shielded from the southerly winds, we enjoy a great microclimate and expansive views over the Otago Harbour. The beach (sandy, walled and great for kids) is a few minutes walk away; access to the local walking paths is right there, and the convenience of a small shop is in Portobello, a short drive or 40min walk away. Getting AroundArrival by car strongly recommended, as public transport is patchy. Car required to explore the natural wonders of the Otago Peninsula. Other Things to NoteOur own summer plans are affected by the Kaikoura earthquakes; namely in that we have decided to not take our cats. If you book this place, you will take on the company of two furry friends. We provide instructions, food, and standby with advice. Thank you!
