Invercargill is Southland's capital city and is beautifully located for the delights of the deep south of the South island of New Zealand including Fiordland, the Catlins, the Lakes District and Stewart Island. It takes 2.5 hours to drive to the alpine scenery of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu, or alternatively Dunedin. You can take the Southern Scenic Route through the Catlins. The dunes and huge open spaces of Oreti Beach are 10 minutes away, where the Teratonga Raceway is located.
The apartment is located within a couple of minutes walk of Queens Park - 80 acres of mature trees and gardens. At the park entrance is the Southland Museum (home of the tuatara), Art Gallery and Visitor Centre, where you can also hire bikes. Queens Park also contains a huge aviary, elaborate Victorian glasshouses, a big playground with water features and most wonderful of all to children - an animal park with llamas, deer, rabbits, wallabys, Auckland Island pigs, chooks and an ostrich. All free! An 18-hole golf course sits to the side of the park.
Doony is also close to Splash Palace swimming pool, the new Southland Sports Stadium and the Velodrome. The centre of town is a 10 minute walk. There is a takeaway, supermarkets and petrol station close to the house.
Best of all 20 minutes to Bluff and you can catch the ferry to STEWART ISLAND (or fly, the airport is a 5 minute drive from the CBD).
YOUR HOSTS CHRIS & HOLGER ALSO RUN SKIP'S PLACE, A SELF-CONTAINED 2-BEDROOMED COTTAGE ON STEWART ISLAND. Please enquire for special Doony/Skip's rates if you will be visiting both places; however, we do regret that we cannot offer 1 night stays.
