Karaka cottage is a secluded two-bedroom cottage on the shore of the beautiful Waimea Inlet, near Mapua village.
Located in the heart of the Nelson/Tasman region, surrounded by the vineyards of Nelson’s wine country, this is an ideal base for day trips around the Nelson region and to the Abel Tasman, Kahurangi, and Nelson Lakes National Parks.
The renovated 1950’s cottage sleeps 4 people, and caters to adults and children aged 12 years and older. It has an open-plan living space with large windows, wonderful views, and a fully-equipped kitchen. The master bedroom has a king size bed, the second bedroom has two single beds. The bathroom has a large tiled shower, and opens to a deck with an outdoor bath. The bath is beautiful in the morning with the sun streaming through the trees, amazing on a clear night looking at the stars.
There are places to sit outside and catch the sunshine whatever time of day, and a choice of tables for dining al fresco. A large covered verandah and a private garden lead to the estuary shore.
We have two other cottages, Miro and Rata, on our five acre property. The property is a mix of organic vineyard, fruit trees, gardens, and regenerating native New Zealand bush that stretches around the estuary shore.
The Nelson/Tasman region abounds with wineries, markets, galleries, and artists’ studios, and we are just 2 km from the Great Taste Tasman Cycle Trail.
There is a wide range of outdoor pursuits to choose from, including hiking, cycling, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, and fishing. There are also many beautiful rivers and beaches for swimming and picnicking. Canyoning, caving, kite boarding, and sky diving are options for the adventurous.
In the cottage, you will find a file with plenty of information on things to do and see in the area, places to eat, grocery shopping etc. We can also help with personal recommendations if you are looking for guided expeditions.
Should you prefer to stay in and relax, the cottage is perfectly equipped for the simple pleasures of a real kiwi bach holiday with good books, board games, barbecue, hammock, and endless views to gaze at. On a full tide you can explore the quiet estuary by kayak or paddle board. The cottage has a woodburner and is very cosy in winter. There is good cellphone coverage and free Wifi for those who want to stay in touch with the outside world.
Whilst secluded and private, the cottage is also easily accessible to Nelson; just 20 minutes (24 km) from Nelson airport and less than 5 minutes to the coastal village of Mapua. Mapua’s thriving wharf area has cafés and restaurants as well as galleries representing local artists.
Fees are for up to 2 guests in the cottage. Additional guests will be charged $15/person per night. Karaka can house up to 4 people total.
Larger parties may consider booking an additional cottage on our property: Miro or Rata. Please contact us for details.
Through the holiday season (December 22 to January 31) a 5-night minimum booking applies to Karaka Cottage, at $250 per night.

Traveling West from Nelson, Matahua is the last peninsula on the Waimea Inlet before you reach the village of Mapua. We are located at the very end of Apple Valley Road East.
