The SpaceThis beautiful and incredible land has been created and managed as a full Permaculture organic garden and self-sufficiency lifestyle block. Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive systems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of the landscape with the people which provides their food, energy, shelter and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Permaculture integrates people into Nature's design. Spending time here allows you to be embraced and nurtured by this natural design. You can be at one with the elements as you enjoy your homegrown breakfast with the sun shining on you.
We live on half an acre of luscious soil with our very own stream which runs year round. We aim to grow as much of our own food as possible. We have fruit and nut trees: peach, apple, plum, grape, hazelnut, walnut, avocado, lemon, macadamia, feijoa, fig, kiwifruit, mandarin, orange, pear, tamarillo....We have our own chickens for fresh eggs and we make our own organic sourdough bread from local NZ whole grains. We have beehives that pollinate the fruit and nut trees and provide us with the most delicious honey! As fruit is in season, you can pick your own straight from the tree for the BEST-tasting, freshest fruit you have ever had. You can nibble your way through the gardens and enjoy a meditative sit in the herb garden circle taking in the multitude of smells and sounds. Breakfast will be created from fresh homegrown eggs & greens from the garden with (sourdough) bread OR Muesli with raw local milk, plus whatever is in season on the land.
The Emperor tent is a professionally designed and manufactured 6 by 4 meter diameter canvas tent. You will lay your head to rest next to a babbling stream as the sound of the water gently lulls you to sleep. Abundant Native bird song will awake you in the morning within the natural rhythms of daybreak. We have tui, kereru, thrush, blackbird, bellbird, piwakawaka, weka, and more. The morning and evening sun glow through the tent and warm it throughout the day. There are 2 doors, all complete with insect screens. Your Glamping tent includes a Queen size bed, 2 chairs, shelves, drawers and carpets within the tent, as well as, electricity providing charging facilities if necessary. There is an electric blanket on the bed for extra warmth should you need it. There are 2 single mattresses that can be put on the carpeted floor of the tent for extra guests or children (all bedding will be provided). There are 2 cloth dividing walls that can be closed for privacy if needed within the tent. Tea and coffee making facilities and goodies (including honey from our own bees) are offered as part of your Glamping experience.
The Emperor Tent very comfortably accommodates 2 adults, with space for up to 2 or 3 additional children or adults, making it the perfect family nature holiday getaway. All extra guests (including children) requiring a bed to be made up will be an additional $20 per night. Please add additional guests when making your booking. Again, additional guests will be sleeping on single mattresses on the carpeted floor of the tent and all bedding is provided. Pets are allowed with prior approval and must sleep outside of the tent. We look forward to hosting you and sharing our wee slice of paradise! Guest AccessThe price listed is for two adults per night and includes breakfast. Breakfast can be created from fresh homegrown eggs from the garden with homemade sourdough bread OR fresh fruit from the land (whatever is in season) with local Raw milk and muesli. If you prefer to organize your own breakfast that's fine too. Discounts will be given for longer stays and with a minimum of at least 2 nights during the high season (Dec. - Feb).
The Emperor tent has her own tea and coffee making facilities and all the goodies are supplied. There is an outdoor kitchen area adjacent to the tent for your food preparation needs. A (hot) outdoor shower has also just been completed. There is also a shower which is shared with us within the main house. There is a fridge available in the house. You can enjoy a glass of wine as you watch a beautiful sunset from the sea view deck.
We sometimes have helpers/woofers staying here (in a separate caravan accommodation) to assist with the care of the land and gardens.
As a guest here, we open our home to you, but ask that you respect our space and privacy in return. You will enjoy your own zone that we have created for you around the Emperor Tent. We are keen to share our lifestyle with others and inspire. My 7 year old daughter and I love to meet new people and share local information. We provide maps and suggestions for you to have your own unique experience here in beautiful Golden Bay. Guests with children are most welcome. Our gardens, the surrounding area, and the beach (within walking distance) are an endless playground for kids of all ages, including adults! Interaction with GuestsWe are available to assist you with your needs during your stay. I am often at Aroha Health Spa in Pohara where I work, so you are free to spend your days exploring, relaxing, reading, listening to birdsong, walking on the beach.... If you prefer total privacy, please let us know and we will respect your request.
We prefer privacy from 6:30pm onwards at the main house, so that my daughter can get to bed. Wifi can be used on the verandah of the house (or inside) as this is where the signal is best between 10am and 5pm. If you notice the ropes are across the stone path that leads to our wee house then that is the signal that we are needing some privacy. If there is an emergency then by all means...let me know...otherwise enjoy your time and space and we shall do the same. The NeighborhoodWe live across the street from our local Marae (Maori meeting place). We live in a quiet neighborhood and in a community of friendly, helpful, and caring people. Beautiful Pohara beach is just a 600 meter stroll away. The beach is an endless expanse of ever-changing beauty as the tide moves a great distance between high and low. It is a great place to walk, run, explore, swim, frolic, ride horses, fly a kite, kayak, ride a blo-kart, relax, read, or walk your dog. The Tarakohe wharf is also only a 15-20 minute walk with great access to fishing, sailing and boating. We are at the gateway to the top end of the Abel Tasman National Park (the quietest most untouched areas are up on the top end). There are endless pristine beaches to explore, kayak, or walk along, as well as waterfall and bush tracks. Some of Golden Bay's best restaurants are within walking distance, such as the San Souci Inn and Ratanui Lodge. For any easy inexpensive meal pick up some fish & chips or pizzas from the local takeaways at Pohara General Store. Aroha Health Spa just down the road providing a range of relaxing therapies and treatments to pamper you after a long day exploring :) Getting AroundWe live in Pohara Valley about 10 minutes drive from Takaka Township. You can walk 10-15 minutes to the small village of Pohara where there are some restaurants, cafes and a general store. Abel Tasman National Park is only a 20 minute drive away. Kahurangi National Park and the west coast (Wharariki Beach) are about an hours drive away. It is handy to have your own transportation to explore beyond Pohara. If you need bus transport check out (URL HIDDEN) Biking is a beautiful way to get around if you have your own bike. Hitch-hiking is an easy option with a hitch-hiking/ride-share bench right at the bottom of the road. Other Things to NoteI run Thrive Therapies at Aroha Health Spa in Pohara and work in many facets of natural health and healing, including massage, reflexology, herbalism, and colon hydrotherapy. I am often away from the land working with clients, especially in summer. Massage and other forms of healing bodywork can be arranged at Aroha Health Spa, a 15 to 20 minute walk along the beach, or in the Emperor tent for an extra charge ($80/hour or $120/90 min). Eventually, the Emperor Tent space will be used as an accommodation option for healing health retreats organized through Aroha Health Spa and utilizing fresh food from the land.
