The SpaceChez Stan. & Carol ! Be alert to us usually being at home, which means guests are part of the household. Most travellers are keen to meet the locals like this of course - we enjoy sharing globe trotting experiences. After extensive renovations & a BUSY home when our (4) kids were younger, we're now at the empty nest stage. Both of us have had very lengthy careers (nursing and education) & are semi-retired. However we've no grand-kids (yet!), & are still pretty energetic. The house (which is on a totally level section just a street in from the beach) is extremely warm & sunny, with double glazing, heat pump & wood fire. We've 2 bathrooms, with the guest one featuring a huge bath. Our diverse loft & "stay the night" rooms can sleep up to 6, although our normal ground floor guest room has a DOUBLE bed, but there's another single bedroom next door and a further kids "hideaway" room. A further magical loft bedroom suits couples, and it's skylight makes it very romantic - you effectively sleep under the stars! We're great cooks (with Stan. a spicy food champ!) & are happy to cater as well - negotiable. Most guests join us for meals & "all day breakfasts", and may buy something tasty (or thirst quenching!) which we'll all share. Keen gardeners & animal friendly, but our own (once extensive) pet menagerie is now down to just tame blackbirds (!), a super sociable ginger cat & the occasional neighbour's friendly terrier dog. The latter is always open to walks! Regular cross-harbour ferries are a handy waterfront walk away, but there are frequent nearby buses to downtown Wellington. The popular Shandon golf course & a HUGE kids indoor "Junglerama" are within ~ 10 minutes easy driving distance. But why go to town? Although we're in a VERY quiet street (one block from the beach & with effortless parking),the Eastbourne village is only a stroll from our door. It covers most needs- library, swimming pool, kids playgrounds, pub, supermarket, galleries, pharmacy, restaurants etc etc. Our nearby sea level streets suit cycling & we've bikes available if required. Many visitors prefer to take beach promenades or hillside rambles however- superb NZ bush walks begin only a few minutes away from our door. Weather permitting, sunset drinks on the beach are somewhat of a family tradition too. NOTE: Although sympathetic to last minute enquiries,we increasingly specify at least 2 nights to ease laundry loads. We often have family or friends here at short notice (especially in summer or at holiday weekends),so PLEASE CONTACT US & DISCUSS YOUR NEEDS BEFORE MAKING A BOOKING!! Guest AccessAlmost the whole house - owners have their own en suite facilities Interaction with GuestsWe're usually "at home", and make a real effort to share meals and conversations with guests. Being extensive travellers ourselves we realise that such local fratenisation can be much appreciated! The NeighborhoodVery quiet and safe - a mere stroll to beach, hills & village shops. Two primary ("elementary") schools are only a moments walk away - our own kids have gone to one & we've many contacts that may suit parents wanting Kiwi school insights! Getting AroundWalking & biking. Frequent local buses & cross harbour ferries into Wellington. Other Things to NoteWe're very kid friendly!

The SpaceThe Gum Tree Cottage is a modern open plan architecturally designed studio built on a stunning 2,000 square metre very private tree covered section which runs down to the beach. The property enjoys all day sun and views over Wellington harbour. It has one double bed in the main studio and one separate smaller bedroom / study with two single beds. Modern kitchen and bathroom with washing machine dishwasher and all whiteware, small television and radio CD player. There is a BBQ on the large deck and for the brave, a heated outside bath set into the hill side over looking Lowry Bay. There are two clothes dryers in a detached service area or "man cave" Three bicycles are available for your use. Heating options includes a wood burning stove. Ultra fast Wifi is provided. The cottage is attached to but closed off from a new wing that has been built below the cottage. We use this wing as our weekender and are generally there at least one day a week in the weekend doing gardening and maintenance etc. The two wings are completely private one from the other and each has their own private deck and separate access. Access to the is via a long drive way to a car deck for parking. The gum tree cottage is accessed via a flight of steps down from the car deck. Elderly people have no trouble with the steps, but the property is not suitable for persons in wheel chairs. Dogs are welcome but it must be understood that the site is not fenced & we have a one off (not per night) dog cleaning fee of $30. If you bring a dog you can pay this fee in cash. It must also be understood that the dog must be kept off the beds & soft furniture. If your dog is not trained to do this we would suggest you not rent this cottage. Wild deer often come on to the property to eat the grass and steal our plums. Please also note that the cottage is built in and surrounded by trees. The trees flower and attract birds, insects and from time to time ants. They also drop leaves and pollen dust. As a consequence it is almost impossible to stop small numbers of insects, moths, spiders and ants from entering the cottage. We do not like to spray and poison too much in such a beautiful environment. If you are going to be a upset finding a live or dead ant or moth in the cottage this booking is not for you. We take a lot of pride in cleaning the cottage but it may sit empty for a day or two before you arrive. We leave some windows open to air the property and a moth, spider or ant may visit between our clean and your arrival. Moths, spiders and ants are not carriers of disease or dirt. No insects carry any human diseases in NZ. They do not enter the cottage because it is dirty. They are part of life and we are in their environment not the other way around. We don't generally live on site but are able to meet guests if they need assistance or advice. We do visit the site every three or four days to mow the lawns, water the garden and make repairs etc. York Bay is one of a necklace of bays on the sunny eastern side of Wellington harbour. Bikeways, bush walks, busses and ferries connect the bays to Eastbourne, Hutt City and Wellington. Nature rules. It can be calm, but it can also be windy and wild. There is good swimming in the calm bays from November through to April but in the winter the sea can come up over the road making travel interesting. Native birds and even deer come on to the property to steal the fruit. Busses and ferries connect York Bay to Eastbourne, Hutt City and Wellington. Busses No.83 and No 81run from Eastbourne to Lower Hutt and Wellington. The best fun way to Wellington is Ferry, which leaves from Days Bay. You can walk to Day's Bay in about 20 minutes or ride in 5. You can take a bike on the ferry which docks right in the centre of Wellington. There are generally two bikes available under the deck beside the steps down to the cottage. . A car is probably best. There is only room for one tenant car on the property. We will tell you where the key is and give you other instructions a few days before you are due to arrive. Do print them out and bring them with you as the as it is easy to miss the drive way into the cottage. It also pays to do a shop before you arrive as it is about 4 or 5 km to the nearest shops back along the same roads which lead to York Bay and the cottage. Access to the cottage is via a long drive way to a car deck for parking. The gum tree cottage is accessed via a flight of steps down from the car deck. Elderly people have no trouble with the steps, but the property is not suitable for persons in wheel chairs. Dogs are welcome but it must be understood that the site is not fenced. Wild deer often come on to the property to eat the grass and steal our plums. We don't generally live on site but are able to meet guests if they need assistance or advice. We do visit the site every three or four days to mow the lawns water the garden and make repairs etc. We use the very lowest cottage as our own weekend getaway & are often there on the weekend. We do have to do repair work on the property from time to time but this is generally on a Saturday only when guests are out. Guest AccessThings to do : Bicycle riding The Rimutaka Cycle Trail has been named one of the world's hottest travel experiences for 2015 by travel guide Lonely Planet, it passes through York Bay. Our tenants usually ride the bikes to Eastbourne direction till the historic light house on the hill, or ride along the Hutt River towards Lower Hutt for the galleries and fair market during the Trail way. Walks and Tracks 1.All of the tracks leading from the cottage are within the property and you can walk right down to the beach at Lowery Bay. On a Saturday morning it is fun as you can buy fresh fish from a fishing boat that comes into the marina. The track at the base of the property is steep so take care. We have not made it too easy as we value our privacy and don’t want strangers wondering up from the road and stealing our plums. 2.The Regional Council has built walking tracks through the original park from York Bay to Lowery Bay and Days Bay. It’s about 1 hour to Days Bay. The tracks leave from the end of Kaitawa Road, the entrance is exactly in York Bay, where the tree house is located. (See the brochures in the tree house). Good Swimming Beaches Days Bay, York Bay and Eastbourne get the summer beaches. Coffee & bars ,galleries, shopping Days Bay, Eastbourne, Petone or Lower Hutt all have their own charming attractions, check them online, you will find all the details. The nearest shops are at Days Bay, Eastbourne, Petone or Lower Hutt. The Eastbourne village, which is about 4 km away does have a small supermarket and associated shops and restaurants. It also has an ATM machine. It’s a nice place. Petone’s main street, Jackson street is also interesting. Lower Hutt has a mall if that is what you need. The SpaceMy house is a basic cottage built in 1980 taking its design inspiration from the typical NZ colonial cottages of the 1860s. It is decorated with Maori and NZ history-inspired collectibles and set in native temperate rain-forest on the fringes of Wainuiomata, an outer suburb of New Zealand's capital city Wellington. The house is at the base of the forest-covered Mt. Lowry (373m) and backs onto the East Harbour Regional Park. Guest AccessGuests will have unrestricted access to the house, its grounds and the ancient beech forest behind it. Interaction with GuestsI am happy to have a 'yarn' (conversation) with guests if we meet on arrival or departure. But my guests like the privacy and seclusion of the cottage. They are usually in a group. So they prefer to be left alone to enjoy the cottage and I oblige. If I am not staying offsite, I will be staying in the garage that is beside but below the cottage. I can come and go from there without disturbing you. If I am not there to welcome you or say goodbye, I will arrange for the key to be left in an easy-to-find location. The NeighborhoodWainuiomata is a lower socio-economic neighborhood (by NZ standards) of detached wooden 3 bedroom houses. The houses are mainly on the valley floor which the cottage looks down on. Wainuiomata is ringed with hills of regenerating native forest that contains fantastic walking and mountain bike tracks. The cottage backs onto the East Harbour Regional Park. Wainuiomata gives access to other amazing wilderness areas. Despite this, there is a good supermarket 3 minutes drive away from the cottage. Getting AroundWainuiomata has regular buses that go to and from Waterloo railway station in the Hutt Valley. Trains go from there to the central Wellington railway station. Interisland ferries are close to the Wellington railway station. From the Airport, there is an 'Airport Flyer' shuttle that goes to a hub in Lower Hutt (Queensgate). From there, you can take a bus or $30 taxi ride to Wainuiomata. By car from Wellington, take State Highway 2 along the side of Wellington harbour, turn off at Petone, travel along the Petone foreshore, follow the signs over the hill, to Wainuiomata. It is typically a 25-30 minute drive from Wellington CBD to Wainuiomata. At the bottom of the Wainuiomata hill road go straight ahead through the first roundabout and then turn right into Ngaio St. At the end of Ngaio Street (which is a compulsory stop T intersection with Karaka St) you will see Kowhai St to the left and running in the same direction as Ngaio St. Number 55 is at the very end of Kowhai St at the end of the cul-de-sac. Other Things to NoteMy house has a kids' bunkroom that sleeps 3. It has kids' books and a large toybox full of cool toys. There are lots of kids' DVDs in the drawers below the DVD player. Please supervise small children by the goldfish ponds near the house and at the stream in the forest.
