The SpaceThe property is exclusively yours during your stay. We (the owners) will be residing elsewhere, usually at one of our other Martinborough properties. So we are handily available should guests have any issues that require our attention. Whare Kohatu is built largely from split schist rock mined from the hills around the Lindis Pass in the South Island of New Zealand. It is a modern and spacious family home, fully equipped with all the necessities for a comfortable stay - short or longer term. It is designed for easy indoor/outdoor living. The lounge and dining areas can be opened up to extensive decks (some fully covered and others partially covered by vines) giving a choice of options for outside dining in most weather. A large open gas fire provides a cosy focal point when relaxing in the lounge. There is also an effective air-conditioning system to deal easily with any extremes of hot and cold weather. The house is characterised with high chapel ceilings, hardwood timber floors, and a large open living/dining layout. The spacious and modern kitchen has all the facilities you are likely to need for catering, or there is a wide range of excellent dining establishments within an easy distance. The gardens are well developed with extensive plantings of both native, English and Japanese trees. Roses, azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons combine to provide a stunning display of colour during the spring and summer. The bright reds and golds of the vines and maples dominate the colours of the landscape in Autumn and early winter. There is a pergola with a vine covered roof in the middle of the garden area which is ideally suited for kicking back and enjoying the tranquillity and splendour of the garden. The NeighborhoodMartinborough village is built around the concept of old English villages dominated by a central square. All the shops and amenities are within an easy walking distance from the centre. Wellington (New Zealand's capital city) is about 90 minutes away using a combination of bus and train services. Between October and April, Martinborough is host to concerts, food and wine events, nationally renowned fair days and physical challenges ranging from cycle races to a fun run through the vines. However it is also a great place to come at any time of year to relax, eat at award winning restaurants, sample fine wines and stroll through the village complete with great cafes, boutique clothing, jewellery, home decor and specialty food stores. Martinborough is well known for its internationally respected Burgundy style red wines. There are over 30 vineyards within a 10 minute drive, many offering wine tasting, lunch and dinner. Should you wish to tour the vineyards, there are local bus tour operators, or you can visit them on bicycles (which can be hired from several places in the Village). The local area also offers golfing, fishing, hiking, horse riding and hunting - for those who enjoy such outdoor pursuits. Getting AroundWe are confident that you will find Whare Kohatu to be an ideal weekend (or midweek) retreat in any season - enjoy a warming spa in winter or great outdoor dining in the summer - all perfect for letting the cares of everyday life melt away.

The NeighborhoodMartinborough is a lively and pretty town which has experienced a renaissance with the addition of vineyards and olive groves over the last 35 years. Our cafes and restaurants boast excellent menus and reflect our wonderful local wines and produce. Speciality shops add colour and variety and to top it off we have a delightful arthouse cinema! The countryside is gentle and beautiful to walk or cycle through as you make your way up through the hills or from one vineyard to the next. Further afield there is the dramatic South Wairarapa coastline, the small village of Lake Ferry with it's famous pub, Lake Wairarapa and Lake Onoke with wetlands, the little village of Ngawi with its colourful tractors, unique Palliser Pinnacles and Cape Palliser lighthouse and seal colonies right along the coastline. We have many special events throughout the year including the iconic Martinborough Fair, the Jazz Festival, Olive Harvest Festival, Cruise Martinborough as well as being part of larger regional events such as Kokomai Arts Festival, Wings Over Wairarapa and the Balloon Festival. We do adventure sports too - canoeing, horse-trekking, cycle races, caving, tramping, fishing and more. Getting AroundWe are 5 minutes walk from the centre of town and only 15 minutes walk or cycle ride from the many vineyards, olive groves, wedding and conference venues. There is a connecting bus from the next town of Featherston which is on the main rail link from Wellington to Masterton. There is a tour bus which goes around the vineyards and I have 2 great bikes you can borrow for a small extra charge. The SpaceThis property is next to the historic Martinborough Station and the Whangaehu river. Accessed by a private road, there is minimal traffic and almost no noise other than livestock and birds. On clear nights you can see every star in the sky. Around the property you can see how sheep and beef are farmed in this part of New Zealand and you can often spot other livestock and wildlife such as pukeko, tui, hawkes, horses, ducks, hares and rabbits, turkeys and the odd pig. The house is a relocated mid-century style wooden bungalow, furnished with an eco-friendly mix of recycled furniture and art. The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms are new, the kitchen is spacious, the wood burner efficient, and the solar panels heat the hot water for you. There's plenty of outdoor areas and great views from inside the house. A sunny deck with seating leads to a large lawn, a fledgling walnut orchard and lots of paddock; a fresh water dam is nearby and the Whangaehu river runs along the boundary to the west. Guest AccessYou'll have the entire house and are welcome to explore (on foot) the 5 hectares surrounding it. Interaction with GuestsEmail, messaging or phone. As this is a working farm, at times (with prior warning) there may be someone working in the walnut orchard around the house, although they will probably be too busy to interact with you :-). The NeighborhoodIt's a quiet and peaceful rural location. Aside from the occasional cow or sheep or neighbours passing by, all you'll hear is birdsong or the neighbours working. Martinborough has many cafes, restaurants and bars, a supermarket, golf course and a cycle rental place, and is surrounded by vineyards and wineries. Getting AroundYou'll need your own car, as it takes about ten minutes to drive from Martinborough village. It takes about 20 minutes to cycle if you bring bikes with you. There are plenty of duvets and blankets provided. If bringing your own sheets and towels is difficult for you please contact Kirsten and we can see if we can sort something out.

A comfortable, double room in a private, country house, on twelve acres of rural paradise in the heart of the world-renowned Ruakokoputuna Valley.   We are ninety km or an hour and a half's drive from New Zealand's beautiful capital, Wellington. Only 15 km from the famous Martinborough wine village with its award-winning restaurants and wineries, Old Waipuna is a gateway to quiet country walks, gorgeous scenery, rugged adventures, wine tours and sophisticated dining.  Affordable accommodation in a family home with a shared bathroom, the rate includes self-service continental breakfast, wireless broadband, linen, and NZ-wide landline calls.  Gourmet meals are available by arrangement, at a modest additional cost. Old Waipuna is home to a family with one easy-going child, one very friendly dog, a rather old cat and 11 chickens who provide us with fresh eggs!  Our spray-free herb and vegetable gardens and heritage orchard provide us with fresh produce year round, and we bake our own bread daily.  The established gardens provide several areas to relax and enjoy the birdsong.  On any given day you are likely to see Pheasants, Tui, bold, friendly Piwakawaka (Fantail), families of Quail, flocks of chattering Rosellas, pairs of Kereru (Wood Pigeons), the glorious aerobatic swallows who nest in our potting shed, and of course Magpies and Sparrows.  You are welcome to relax here with the family, find a quiet corner of the property to get away on your own, or use Old Waipuna as a starting point to explore the beauty of the South Wairarapa.  Beyond the charms of the wine and foodie haven that is Martinborough itself, our own Ruakokoputuna Valley boasts spectacular attractions, among them, the world-famous Glow Worm Caves and Patuna Chasm, Horse treking and farm walks, eeling, fishing, swimming and picnicking at the Ruakok River, Golf Cross, Quad Bike Adventures and the Pole-to-Pole course, clay-bird shooting and the Te Maunga Safari Park. (Please note teh accommodation we offer is a bedroom only.  Your room is comfortable, well-appointed and private, but there is no bathroom ensuite.  The bathroom, although clean and pleasaant, is modest, and is shared with the owners).   There is plenty of scope for privacy and solitude, but you will be encouraged to make yourselves at home throughout the house and grounds.
