The SpaceKaramea is s small town on the north west tip of the south island of NZ. It has many attractions including the Oparara Arches, Limestone Caves, the Heaphy track as well as miles and miles of beaches and stunning nature. In town there is a supermarket, gas station/information centre, hardware store/post office and the Global Gypsy Gallery In my house, which was built in 1905, there are all the modern converniences you might expect, though I don't have a traditional fridge as I use a zeer 'pot in pot' cooling system .I have an outdoor wood-fired pizza oven, and a fully productive vegetable garden and greenhouse, which you are free to enjoy. Guest AccessEverything is open to everyone - we have no keys! The garden is available to enjoy as are the vegetables and fruit growing there. Interaction with GuestsI work from home and am around a lot to give information, fishing tips and shared meals. I teach yoga (classes available to guests), and keep the garden pumping with lots of yummy vegetables and fruit. The Neighborhoodsimplicity, beauty, nature, community. Getting AroundBuses arrive every day from Westport. There is an airport in Karamea with not so cheap or frequent flights, or there is always the Kiwi option of hitching! Parking is easy outside the house, or down the driveway. Other Things to NoteCome and enjoy the abundant, good life. Forget your watch, forget time and simply 'be'.

If you love the outdoors, explore the numerous mountain bike and walking tracks in this area, such as the Old Ghost Road, or discover the region's mining history by visiting the Denniston Mine. Or simply sit back and relax to enjoy the tranquility and peace at this unique place, 100 metres above the sea: read a book, listen to music and feel free to do nothing. On many occasions during the summer months you can observe from our verandas Hector's Dolphins surfing and feeding in the water. It's a truly unique experience! Situated almost halfway between Punakaiki and Karamea, The Old Slaughterhouse is the ideal place to plan your day trips. Spend a day in Punakaiki to explore the iconic Pancake Rocks, and experience the wonders of the West Coast Heritage highway. In Karamea you will find the start of the Heaphy Track, one of New Zealand's famous Great Walks, and the Oparara Basin, both truly magic places to visit – even for a day. ... and then come back and sit back on the veranda to watch a breathtaking sunset. If you enjoy being surrounded by peace and tranquility, uninterrupted views of the sea, bush and sky, beautiful sunsets, birdsong and nature, then you will enjoy your stay at The Old Slaughterhouse traveller's lodge. Getting AroundGetting to The Old Slaughterhouse is easy! From Westport, take State Highway 67 through Granity, north towards Karamea. Our car park is about 1 km past Hector, on the right hand side. As the lodge is only accessible by an approx. 10 min. walking track, it is suggested to arrive at the car park at the bottom of the hill before 8 pm to ensure your walk is in good light. We can transport your luggage by arrangement. Please give us a call when you are about to leave Westport and we will meet you at the carpark. The nearest supermarket is in Westport, an approximately 25 min. drive away. Other Things to NoteAll our water comes from a spring here on the property and we use a mini-hydro system to generate our electric energy. This limits the use of electric powered utensils and as a result you won't find e.g. microwave ovens, hairdryers or a washing mashine here. We are cooking with gas, our fully equipped kitchen has two gas hobs and one gas oven and we heat the lodge with driftwood from the beach. The only power points are in the main logde, where you can recharge your cell phone. It's worth to mention that there is also no WiFi available at the lodge. The Old Slaughterhouse truly is a place where you can – and should – just switch off and relax.
