The SpaceRuru Hut is a warm and cosy haven which has a double bed, refrigerator and cooking facilities (including bbq and coal range), ideally suited for two people. A few steps away via the covered verandah is the bathroom hut with shower and toilet. A short boardwalk leads to the gorgeous outside bath. The superb sunny outdoor living space set amongst the bush provides access to our private track along the Kawhaka Creek stream boundary, featuring magnificent tree ferns and mature native trees and leads to the 2 private swimming holes. All of our facilities and activities are on our private property of 3Ha and access is exclusive to our guests. Ruru Hut is situated close to our house but far enough away that it is private and peaceful - just in WiFi range ! Relax and listen to the beautiful daylight songs of the tuis and bellbirds and the haunting call of the ruru owl during darkness.
Guests have exclusive access to the immediate environment of Ruru Hut, private bush walk and swimming holes. Washing machine and drier access can be arranged, also microwave. A washing line and pegs are provided. Please note there is no cell phone access on site, free WiFi is provided and telephone landline can be used by arrangement.
We enjoy interacting with our guests and are happy to share our knowledge and experience of the local environment. We can arrange local activities such as gold panning, fishing, hunting, hiking and cycling.
We love the easy access to superb native forests, streams, rivers and beaches. We are close to the West Coast Wilderness trail (part of the NZ wide cycle trail) and are happy to pick up and drop off cyclists, we provide covered storage for your bicycles on our site. The closest section of the cycleway to us is the magnificent ride up the Kawhaka valley to Cowboy Paradise (check out (website hidden)). A feature of our location is the abundant native bird life including tuis, bellbirds, native pigeons and ruru (native owl). Relax in the private environment of Ruru Hut and enjoy the bird song or maybe explore the local beaches, hike in the forests or visit the picturesque town of Hokitika to sample the excellent cuisine, theatres and local shopping. As we are in a high rainfall area (without which we wouldn't have our magnificent forests), it's advisable to bring wet weather gear with you as well as suitable footwear for hiking etc - we do provide complimentary "gum boots" (galoshes for you non-NZers) for guests to use.
We are happy to pickup guests from the airport, cycleway or other locations by arrangement - contact us for travel options. We provide free parking at our premises and under cover cycle storage.
Some activities are obviously seasonal such as fresh water fishing (we have some great salmon fishing over here !) but most are able to be done all year round. Just let us know what you are interested in before you arrive and we'll do our best to arrange it. Guest AccessGuests have exclusive access to the immediate environment of Ruru Hut, private bush walk and swimming holes. Washing machine and drier access can be arranged, also microwave. Interaction with GuestsOne of our primary considerations is privacy - we're here if you need us but otherwise we'll leave you to it as we know a lot of people come here for comfort and solitude ! We do enjoy interacting with our guests and are happy to share our knowledge and experience of the local environment and can arrange local activities such as gold panning, fishing, hunting, hiking and cycling. Annie loves baking so rest assured you may get some of her culinary delights ! The NeighborhoodWe live in a rural environment so our neighbors are people like us who love the outdoors. Traffic is sparse but you do need to take care when travelling on gravel roads so take it easy - if you're a bit late to arrive we won't have a problem with that. We love our local neighborhood and the opportunities for recreation which are so close, it's fascinating seeing all the activities - farming, gold mining, the cycle way close by, hunting, fishing, hiking. If you get a chance get yourselves in to Fat Pipis Pizza and try a Whitebait Pizza - classic West Coast tucker which you can order and then consume at the West Coast Wine Bar - a great place to hang out for local entertainment and atmosphere ! We also highly recommend the Hokitika New World supermarket - great owners, great staff and great products. Enjoy Hokitika - recommended classic activity is to buy Fish & Chips and eat them down at the Hokitika Beach... Getting AroundHokitika has an airport with regular Air NZ flights plus major rental car agencies. There's plenty of parking in and around Hokitika and great day trips to places like the Glaciers, Arthurs Pass region, Punakaiki (Pancake rocks) and many more ! We know most of the local short cuts to places like isolated beaches with penguin traffic and the hot fishing spots ! Other Things to NoteTravel time to Hokitika is 15-20 minutes comfortable drive where you can find all the amenities of our truly charming small town such as service stations, supermarket (closes at 8:30-9pm), library, theatres, restaurants and a great bookshop, museum and library - the only thing missing is traffic lights (there are none on the whole 600km length of the West Coast of the South Island - aren't we lucky !)
