The SpaceRuru Hut is a warm and cosy haven which has a double bed, refrigerator and cooking facilities (including bbq and coal range), ideally suited for two people. A few steps away via the covered verandah is the bathroom hut with shower and toilet. A short boardwalk leads to the gorgeous outside bath. The superb sunny outdoor living space set amongst the bush provides access to our private track along the Kawhaka Creek stream boundary, featuring magnificent tree ferns and mature native trees and leads to the 2 private swimming holes. All of our facilities and activities are on our private property of 3Ha and access is exclusive to our guests. Ruru Hut is situated close to our house but far enough away that it is private and peaceful - just in WiFi range ! Relax and listen to the beautiful daylight songs of the tuis and bellbirds and the haunting call of the ruru owl during darkness. Guests have exclusive access to the immediate environment of Ruru Hut, private bush walk and swimming holes. Washing machine and drier access can be arranged, also microwave. A washing line and pegs are provided. Please note there is no cell phone access on site, free WiFi is provided and telephone landline can be used by arrangement. We enjoy interacting with our guests and are happy to share our knowledge and experience of the local environment. We can arrange local activities such as gold panning, fishing, hunting, hiking and cycling. We love the easy access to superb native forests, streams, rivers and beaches. We are close to the West Coast Wilderness trail (part of the NZ wide cycle trail) and are happy to pick up and drop off cyclists, we provide covered storage for your bicycles on our site. The closest section of the cycleway to us is the magnificent ride up the Kawhaka valley to Cowboy Paradise (check out (website hidden)). A feature of our location is the abundant native bird life including tuis, bellbirds, native pigeons and ruru (native owl). Relax in the private environment of Ruru Hut and enjoy the bird song or maybe explore the local beaches, hike in the forests or visit the picturesque town of Hokitika to sample the excellent cuisine, theatres and local shopping. As we are in a high rainfall area (without which we wouldn't have our magnificent forests), it's advisable to bring wet weather gear with you as well as suitable footwear for hiking etc - we do provide complimentary "gum boots" (galoshes for you non-NZers) for guests to use. We are happy to pickup guests from the airport, cycleway or other locations by arrangement - contact us for travel options. We provide free parking at our premises and under cover cycle storage. Some activities are obviously seasonal such as fresh water fishing (we have some great salmon fishing over here !) but most are able to be done all year round. Just let us know what you are interested in before you arrive and we'll do our best to arrange it. Guest AccessGuests have exclusive access to the immediate environment of Ruru Hut, private bush walk and swimming holes. Washing machine and drier access can be arranged, also microwave. A washing line and pegs are provided. There is no cell phone access on site, free WiFi is provided and telephone landline can be used by arrangement. Interaction with GuestsOne of our primary considerations is privacy - we're here if you need us but otherwise we'll leave you to it as we know a lot of people come here for comfort and solitude ! We do enjoy interacting with our guests and are happy to share our knowledge and experience of the local environment and can arrange local activities such as gold panning, fishing, hunting, hiking and cycling. Annie loves baking so rest assured you may get some of her culinary delights ! The NeighborhoodWe live in a rural environment so our neighbors are people like us who love the outdoors. Traffic is sparse but you do need to take care when travelling on gravel roads so take it easy - if you're a bit late to arrive we won't have a problem with that. We love our local neighborhood and the opportunities for recreation which are so close, it's fascinating seeing all the activities - farming, gold mining, the cycle way close by, hunting, fishing, hiking. If you get a chance get yourselves in to Fat Pipis Pizza and try a Whitebait Pizza - classic West Coast tucker which you can order and then consume at the West Coast Wine Bar - a great place to hang out for local entertainment and atmosphere ! We also highly recommend the Hokitika New World supermarket - great owners, great staff and great products. Enjoy Hokitika - recommended classic activity is to buy Fish & Chips and eat them down at the Hokitika Beach... Getting AroundHokitika has an airport with regular Air NZ flights plus major rental car agencies. There's plenty of parking in and around Hokitika and great day trips to places like the Glaciers, Arthurs Pass region, Punakaiki (Pancake rocks) and many more ! We know most of the local short cuts to places like isolated beaches with penguin traffic and the hot fishing spots ! Other Things to NoteTravel time to Hokitika is 15-20 minutes comfortable drive where you can find all the amenities of our truly charming small town such as service stations, supermarket (closes at 8:30-9pm), library, theatres, restaurants and a great bookshop, museum and library - the only thing missing is traffic lights (there are none on the whole 600km length of the West Coast of the South Island - aren't we lucky !)

The Space* This is a private room suitable for a single traveller or a couple. Maximum 2 people. There is one queen size bed. In peak season the bathroom and separate toilet may be shared with other guests though this is rare. * It is a large bedroom with amazing views over the farm. There is plenty of space to sit and relax. * The flue/chimney from our stove goes through the room so it is always nice and warm. (Note sometimes you may hear the sound of the fire through the chimney). If you are overly fussy and fancy, it may not be a fit. If you want a low key place on a farm where quiet and privacy are valued, this could be the place. No other houses are visible from ours yet we are only 15mins from the town. We run an authentic NZ farmstay where you can get up close to all the animals. WHAT'S INCLUDED IN YOUR STAY * Free farm tour. Feed and pet the animals * Tea & plunger coffee. Cereal bars * Plenty of helpful tips and advice about activities and where to eat out * Comfortable queen sized bed & pillows * Free wifi for checking emails or looking at web-pages * Private bathroom with shower & bath.( May be shared in peak tourist times) Fresh towels. * Plenty of reading material about the West Coast * A warm, relaxing and friendly environment * Great memories EXTRAS ON REQUEST * Outdoor fire can be set & lit for you * Small amounts of laundry can done by me (for 2 night stays or more) * Help planning the rest of your trip ----- Sadly due to previous guests behaviour, the kitchen is not available.--- A TYPICAL DAY FOR OUR GUESTS A tour of the farm after breakfast then off to see the Hokitika Gorge or Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. A picnic at Lake Kaniere or a walk along the stunning wild beach. Maybe wander the Arahura River to look for a piece of jade or visit the local art shops to buy a piece. Dinner in town at one of the many great restaurants then back home to relax by the fire, star gazing or chill out in your private room.... Other options: Hokitika Tree Top Walkway, many local walks, Shantytown, Monteiths Brewery, Hokitika Museum, carve your own jade, scenic flight to the glaciers/Mt Cook and much much more! PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BOOK IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE FULL DESCRIPTION OF OUR PROPERTY. LOCATION The house sits on top of a ridge overlooking native bush and farmland with views of the Tasman Sea in the distance. The property is a 75 acre farm with sheep, cattle, pigs, goats and birds. You will need a car to make the most of our place. The property is 2mins from the Arahura River - an important source of pounamu (jade) on the West Coast. We are only a 5min drive to the beach which is a beautifully wild place filled with amazing driftwood and pebbles - a great place for a bonfire. IMPORTANT - WE ARE AN ECO-FRIENDLY HOME ** Our house is completely off-grid. All our power comes from a solar panel array. All our water is rainwater collected from the roof. Many of the features in the house are from building recyclers. If you need microwaves, hairdryers and A/C etc, sorry we are not the place for you. **Make yourself at home - we look forward to meeting you!** ** Please note your bedroom is upstairs**. ______ To improve your chances of your booking being approved please tell us a little about yourself and any people you are traveling with. This information is important to us as AirBnB is based on trust - after all we will be welcoming you into our home, not a hotel room. _________ Guest AccessGuests have access to their own private bedroom with sitting space and bathroom. There is also a separate guest lounge area. At peak tourist times you may have to share the bathroom, this is not common though. You are free to wander the farm to see the animals. For safety reasons the power shed is off limits to guests. I honor your privacy and will not enter your room during your stay. **Unfortunately due to some bad experiences with past guests, the kitchen is not available to guests. We are very sorry about this, but there are some excellent restaurants in Hokitika. Interaction with GuestsWe are busy people who work hard. We value our family time in the evenings. We prefer independent guests who enjoy their own space and privacy. We are happy to give you plenty of tips and advice about local attractions/history/places to eat and shop and tips on travel in NZ. I am happy to show you round the farm, just arrange a time with me. Otherwise you can wander around on your own. We are LGBT friendly! The NeighborhoodHokitika is the perfect place to base yourself while exploring the West Coast. All the best attractions are only a short drive away. There are many easy bush walks close to our house, the closest winds through an old goldmine site dating back to the 1800's. Take a walk through Hokitika town and see some of the sights mentioned in the Booker Prize winning author, Eleanor Catton's book, The Luminaries. You really need at least two days in Hokitika to see most of the attractions. Getting AroundA car is a must to make the most of sightseeing. There is a local taxi service. We are 15mins from the airport. The Tranz Alpine train comes into Greymouth Station 30 mins drive away. The West Coast Cycle Trail is nearby. Christchurch is 3 hours drive away over SH73 through Arthur's Pass. Other Things to NoteAs we are off-grid, we must be careful with our power. We do not have a microwave, air conditioning, dishwasher or electric blankets (we offer hotwater bottles in winter), but our house is very warm. Use of hairdryers is not permitted. Much of our cooking is done on a woodstove in our kitchen. This also provides all the heating for the house. Water is collected from rainwater on the roof and totally safe to drink. In summer water is in short supply and we need to be careful with water use. We have cellphone coverage but it is not good.

It is built on the original site of the historic Cafe de Paris. Many of the original features remain including the little galley kitchen. This is NOT a shiny new, modern house. If you don't enjoy the character of old houses then this won't be the right place for you.
