Self catering river-side cottage in rural County Down This is an opportunity to stay in a really ecological cottage, set in a very attractive location right beside a river, in the grounds of the owners converted Mill. The cottage was featured in Living Design Summer 2010 and was built with hemp-crete walls and a grass roof. A short film is available on YouTube for those interested in the innovative construction. Our visitors really enjoy the generous internal & exterior spaces which are designed to enjoy the space and light with a simple and natural style. It has 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with bunk beds. There is level access throughout the cottage and the shower is a level access wetroom (no bath). There is underfloor heating throughout, and it is a very comfortable environment due to the high levels of insulation. There is also a wood-burning stove. The cottage has a sun-filled veranda on two sides with table and chairs on the west-facing veranda to catch the evening light. The house is set in a natural attractive garden with young orchard and vegetable plots, and has access to the river bank with diverse bird and wildlife. So come to this restful place and fall asleep to the sound of the river. Price for a let of 1 month or more is by negotiation with the owner. If you want to stay for say 10 days, then subject to availability, we will charge for the first week at stated rates, and additional 3 days pro rata. We are also flexible about start days. The cottage is located on the periphery of an historic estate, so benefits from the mature trees and gentle landscape. We are located on the banks of the Ballynahinch River which is a very special setting, teaming with Wildlife. We are just 6 miles from Strangford Lough ( Killyleagh) and within 30 mins of several other lovely beaches. Hemp Cottage is a Green Tourism rated property, constructed with sustainable materials. We stayed in the Curtis room, just awesome. The huge tub was lovely. It was warm and comfortable and these people do not miss a single thing. Every need is anticipated, from the little dental floss things, the hair dryer, the variety of toiletries ... You will want for nothing. I loved the atmosphere here. I felt like they wanted us to share their home, and I definitely made myself at home! I loved their dogs, they were so sweet. No barking, and cute as could be. Their son Edward was engaging. James was kind enough to stay up and have a very intellectual conversation through the evening. The next morning we were greeted with a beautiful fire in the dining room, and such a nice breakfast. James spent time with us while we ate, and honestly ... I wish the whole family would have sat with us for a meal. I enjoyed them so much...I was sad to leave. When we drove away, after a spirited goodbye in the driveway... I had to cry a little bit because these are people I may never see again, and they touched me deeply. This place is magical. I will treasure it in my memories always. I do hope to go back someday.... It's a wonderful home. Room Tip: Curtis Room, lovely! (URL HIDDEN) Guest AccessThe whole house (except our own bedrooms!). Getting AroundYou will need a car to get around. Other Things to NoteOur buildings were made to the standards of earlier times – and sometimes without the intention that they should be lived in. Consequently you may encounter features that reflect their particular character but that deserve due care and attention, particularly by the young, elderly, less mobile or visually impaired. Examples of these are steps worn with age, uneven surfaces, low ceilings and beams, unexpected drops or changes in level, and by modern standards low or absent lighting. In all cases we have sought to make a sensible compromise between due regard for safety and the careful retention of the fabric of each building, which makes it an interesting place to stay. We ask you to appreciate and use the building with this understanding, and recommend you read the information in the Guest Book in the property
