Hitch-hiking or taxis or the occasional airport bus or renting a car! For renting a car, search autorent
We have two taxi companies in town, Longyearbyen taxi and Maxi taxi. Most places are within a walking distance or a very short taxi ride. This really is a very small town. There is no other public transport to speak of except for the airport bus which costs approx 75 NOK per head. The airport is 5 km away. There is virtually no traffic in town, the airport is a 15 minute drive, most places are a 5 minute drive.
Its right at the center of town with quick access to all stores and restaurants. From my apartment, it is a 5 minute walk to Svalbard butikken supermarket, Kroa bar and restaurant and Svalbard Hotell, and a 10 minute walk to UNIS. Close to the church, the governor's office and the police station to make you feel safe.
Visiting during winter:
For those concerned about the 24 hour darkness during the polar winter and its health effects, you will be fine. I am on my way to my 5th polar winter here and I feel good. There are some locals who have lived here for over 20 years and they are just as healthy as you are!
As far as the other concern as to how cold can it get during winter, well that is anybody's guess. It can be very cold to warm. It can even rain at times during winter!! Its really not that bad. Longyearbyen is not Siberia. More than the cold, its the wind and the ice that you must keep in mind. Just make sure you have windproof clothing and ice grippers when you visit. If you are mentally strong enough and have enough clothing and gear, you can definitely survive a polar winter and enjoy it.
The winter is the best time to visit! It is a once in a lifetime experience and is something you must experience! The beauty of the dancing northern lights is this tranquil serenity is an experience that words cannot describe, it can only be seen and experienced by being here. And just when you think there is no one around but you, you might come across a reindeer or an arctic fox, bathed in the glow of the reflected moonlight from the snow covered mountains.
