Luxury Accommodation at Walnut Cottage Originally the western end of a stone built Highland Steading (Scottish word for barn), built in the early 1800s. The walls in this cottage are two feet thick and have been keeping the Scottish weather at bay for around 200 years. Walnut Cottage is named after the six walnut trees planted only fifty yards away. The walnuts from these trees were originally used for dying clothes long before modern dyes were available. This Steading was built by Major Colin Mackenzie and was converted by the current owners Kenneth and Lesley Mackenzie in 2009/10. Originally used as a grain and wool store the accommodation available upstairs now includes two double bedrooms. Both have en-suite bathrooms and the master bedroom boasts a balcony looking west with stunning views to the mountains of Kintail and the towns of Dingwall and Strathpeffer. Downstairs offers heated floors throughout, another family shower room with W.C, a well equipped kitchen with granite worktops, a spacious lounge with 42” plasma television, blu-ray DVD player, ipod dock, free wi-fi, solid oak flooring and luxurious leather sofas. Outside Walnut Cottage is the original courtyard with parking available to the main door. There is a patio which is accessed through patio doors from the lounge and is the perfect place to relax and take in a beautiful highland sunset. From April until October in the field immediately adjacent three Highland cattle known as ‘The Mountgerald Highlanders’ roam freely and are very fond of having their photographs taken. We have tried to make Chestnut Cottage child friendly, providing a travel cot, stair gate, and high chair. There is a children’s play park available on the flat grass area just down hill from Walnut cottage which includes swings, slide, picnic table, monkey bars and a tower. Dogs are welcome but as we are on a working farm they must be on a lead at all times when outside the cottage. We respectfully ask that they are only allowed only downstairs and not on the carpets on or upstairs. We are pleased to offer dog bowls/blankets etc on request. Highland Farm Cottages sit in the heart of the Scottish Highlands on the beautiful farm of Mountgerald. We are only 1 mile from the market town of Dingwall, the birth place of Macbeth and the capital of Scotland to The Vikings. We are 20 minutes from the city of Inverness. There are walks, golf courses, and mountain bike trails. You will find the finest rivers for fishing, magnificent moors for shooting and wonderful distilleries producing the finest whiskies all within 30 mins of your front door. The weather here is renowned as being dryer and warmer than most other parts of Scotland. As the majority of our weather comes from the West we are fortunate to be protected by a mountain range leaving us with a dryer, warmer climate. This combined with long summer days makes us a very popular holiday destination. The SpaceWe have been hosting in London, Geneva and Paris since 2012 and recently renovated and listed this charming Scottish country cottage that has been in our family for nearly 100 years. Our ideal guests are families of 5, or else small groups of friends travelling together - we will never ask strangers to share the space. ____________________________________________________________ ARE YOU ALSO TRAVELLING TO LONDON? Do check out our flat in London through the "Other Listings" reviews in our Hosts Profile _____________________________________________________________ You will see photos of the exterior and interior on the site. The cottage has three bedrooms: The Botanic room with a queen size bed and toilet en-suite; The Birds room with two single beds and a shower-room en-suite; The Traveller room with a single bed situated next to the shared bathroom. The living room has a working fireplace and a library of local guidebooks as well as a broad range of literature. A separate dining room leads into the fully-equipped kitchen. The cottage is accessed through a sun porch that is great for afternoon tea. There is a lawn garden to the front with views over the Cromartie Firth, and a slope down to the trout river. Tall trees protect the house to the North. The cottage is set back from the road behind a wall and hedge giving great private space in the garden. Guest AccessGuests have full access to the house and grounds, including the trout river at the bottom of the garden. It is important to note that this is a relatively shallow but fast-flowing river so guests are asked to take real care with young children as it is not safe to try and wade across the river in the water. Interaction with GuestsWe may not be in Scotland when you are staying and therefore may not have the pleasure of meeting you. If so, then we will have made key handover arrangements and our caretaker will be available to help with any questions you may have about the cottage and the local area. There is more information about the local area in the cottage manual, and there is a good selection of guidebooks on visiting Scotland, its history and culture in the cottage. The NeighborhoodSituated on the famous North Coast 500 route, we are ideally placed as a base to explore the Highlands. Just twenty kilometres north of Inverness and the amenities of the city, but the pleasure of the country, with easy access to Loch Ness itself. Note that the cottage itself is a 15 minute walk from shops in the centre of Evanton village - it is not really practical to stay here without your own vehicle A beautiful road leads off to the West Coast and the Isle of Skye. Or head up the East Coast right to the tip of Great Britain. Evanton also has some of its own features: •Fyrish Monument. This is the stone ruin you can see on top of the nearest hill. It represents the gates of Negapatam in India and was built in 1782 by General Sir Hector Munro, a local landowner, in order to provide employment for local people. There is a path up to the monument on the other side of the hill. •The Black Rock Gorge, just a mile further up the Glenglass Road, is a very deep and narrow natural river gorge. It is a rather spooky place and was used for filming one of the scenes in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. •Ben Wyvis is a small mountain (big for Scotland) between Evanton and Dingwall to the north. It is a Nature Reserve and can be walked. Despite only being 1000 metres high, some parts of the mountain have snow all year round. There are also many great places to walk just in the nearby countryside and guests will find links to trails we and others have loaded onto Wikiloc in the house manual. Getting AroundThe cottage is 25 minutes drive North of Inverness. Guests really need their own vehicle as the cottage is situated 1.5 kms uphill walk outside the centre of Evanton village and the nearest shops, and local bus stop. The nearest airport is Inverness (INV), which is served by EasyJet and British Airways flights from London, and one daily KLM/FlyBe flight from Amsterdam. The nearest mainline rail station is Inverness, with overnight sleeper trains from London Euston Station. Edinburgh airport, which has many more flights, is a beautiful 3 1/2 hours drive up through the Cairngorms. Aberdeen airport is 3 hours (but on a much less pleasant road). Other Things to NoteThe weather can often be cold and wet in the Highlands of Scotland so you will find wood or peat to use in the working fireplace. We have also provided a range of warm outer-wear, anoraks and coats, wellington boots and slippers to make our guests more comfortable outdoors and inside the cottage.

There is lots of great pubs and resturants a short drive . 7 miles north of Inverness you will find the tore roundabout A832 and A835 intersect here, continue north on the A9 for 3 miles. At this point you will see a sign for culbokie and a right hand turn. Take this and then the second right after this, signposted for knockbain. After this travel up the hill via a windy road for 1.4 miles. You will pass a sign for an airfield and B&B on your RHS and then your LHS, do not take this road, keep right and continue up hill, when you see a painted sign for eagle stone and some bins on your left hand side you have reached our drive. Turn left and continue straight towards wooden gate with Greenbrae on it. We look forward to seeing you soon ! The SpaceSet in the beautiful Highlands and situated on the Black Isle - you will have close access to the city of Inverness (15minutes drive away) or a host of Munro's and other beautiful walks on your doorstep. If you are less keen on travelling too far then you could also do some dolphin spotting (10mins away) or visit the local brewery for a tour or indeed the whisky distillery if you require something stronger! ***The chalet is situated in our spacious garden and we only have one - so you should not get confused with our neighbouring business 'Kilcoy Chalets' which are a group of 5 identical chalets nestled into the same patch of turf.*** Guest AccessThe chalet is the perfect place to relax - no wifi available, but phone signal isn't too bad and you'll get enough 'G' signal to get the odd email if you're lucky! But you won't need these as there is fresh air in abundance! There are no kitchen facilities in the chalet ( just a toaster and a kettle), but there are plenty fine takeaways, restaurants and some fine Gastropubs to sink your teeth into and when you just want to do your own thing then you could grab a your favourites from the supermarket and lie in bed and watch some DVDs instead! ***The chalet is situated in our garden and we only run one chalet so you are more than welcome to relax in our garden if you would like to and we are the only other people you should expect to meet there!*** Interaction with GuestsWe do love to meet friendly people who stay at our chalet, but having just had our 2nd child in less than 2 years we are extremely busy looking after them and unfortunately the evening is a quick succession of "tea time, bath time, story time and then bedtime" and my husband can work shifts in the evening meaning we might not be able to dedicate our time to greeting you as we would like to, but we will endeavour to show you in and about and give advice on the local area as much as possible. :) Getting AroundThere is a bus stop at the top of the road about 300 yards away which offers transport both to the city of Inverness and routes West. We'd definitely recommend this as an easier stay for people with their own transport as you will simply have more freedom - saying that we have been surprised how much our guests have been and done on foot and through the local transport system! Other Things to NotePlease please please - do read the directions on how to get here, try to read the blurb about how to get settled in if we are not available and finally try not to get us mixed up with our next door neighbours (Kilcoy BnB + Kilcoy Chalets) we are directly in the middle. We are between the Kilcoy chalets and the Kilcoy kindergarten and currently the best things to look for is we have 2 small signs saying 'Gilead' at the top of the drive (not easy to spot) or check for our vehicles in the driveway which are a dark blue Mini Countryman and a grey Nissan Navara pickup. We also have a horse box sat next to our greenhouse which no other house on the Kilcoy road has!
