The NeighborhoodGreat Brak River (Groot Brak River) perfectly situated midway between George (30 km) and Mossel Bay (27 km), is an ideal base from which to explore the beautiful Garden Route. With its mild year-round climate, Great Brak River is a mere hour’s drive from SA’s ostrich capital, Oudtshoorn and the world-renowned Cango Caves. Sweeping panoramic views complement the outstanding characteristics of this jewel of the Southern Cape.
This is a little gem of a town situated at the confluence of the Great Brak River and the Indian Ocean on the Garden Route of the Southern Cape. Absorb the scenic beauty of the majestic Outeniqua Mountains, and the azure blue sea with rolling green hills and pastures, rich agriculture and culture.
River bush and fynbos, aloe and dolphin, whale, suikerbekkie and man live side by side in a place one can only describe as Paradise. The community is alive with cultural activities, musical events and art in all its forms. It’s a tourist’s paradise with plenty of sporting and leisure activities, just waiting to be fully discovered.
Throughout the tranquil scenic area, there are plenty of picnic places, both secluded and areas where facilities are provided. Those areas not providing facilities, fires are not to be made. Places such as Pine Creek Holiday Resort have facilities directly on the rivers of Great Brak and Little Brak and also provide canoes for a fun filled day at a reasonable price.
The beautiful, clean and unspoiled beaches in the area, and the lagoon, offer safe swimming – with lifesavers present during the December and January holidays. All beaches throughout the Garden Route are blessed with the presence of the Southern Right Whales, dolphins and seals. From July through to November you can quietly sit and admire these magnificent mammals. Rheebok and Tergniet beaches both have tidal pools whilst the rest have no serious rocks, all are swimming beaches.
With day packages available, the Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, (hosting four (4) of the Big Five for people to see), offers game drives, guided bush trails, horseback safari’s and outrides with an abundance of flora and Fauna to see, for the avid nature lover.
The river that divides the village is rich in marine life while its wooded banks offer excellent opportunities for bird watching. There is an Art route, several Cycling and Hiking trails (near the Wolwedans Dam and Glentana), exhilarating mountain bike trails, the Fragrance route (lavender planted in local gardens) and a Historic route. Follow the circular route through the village and experience the quaint village which is rich in history and tradition
Take a pleasant drive to close by Knysna and Plettenberg Bay and experience the Birds of Eden and Monkeyland just outside Plett at the Craggs.
For the avid shopping enthusiast Mossel Bay Mall, Langeberg Mall and Bayside Centre will take care of all your shopping needs. There are also a variety of smaller home goods stores as well as market stalls and boutiques to pique your interest. Getting AroundOwn Transportation is essential to get around the little town and the surrounding areas.
Although George Municipality has just recently implemented a bus service which is operational in the biggest parts of town and you can even travel to the Garden Route Mall by bus - it is not operational everywhere at the moment. Please look out for the GO GEORGE buses. Other Things to NoteOwn car essential.
