Welcome to Strathisla bungalow guest house.
Built in 1860, Strathisla is one of the 'grand old ladies' of the highland bungalows.
Situated in the highland hinterland of Matale just one hour from Kandy where the days are warm and the nights refreshingly cool, Strathisla is now open to all as a charming guest house set on a working tea estate surrounded by tropical spice gardens.
Whether its taking a dip in the local waterhole, exploring the local villages and surrounding tea country, hiking the Knuckle ranges or simply whiling the day away with endless cups of tea on the expansive verandah, Strathisla will be sure to provide all with relaxation and peace.
For those feeling a little more adventurous, Strathisla is perfectly positioned to enjoy day trips to all the major sites in the cultural triangle; Kandy being 50mins to the sth and Sigiria only 60mins to the nth.
Despite its proximity to the major sites, Strathisla is located in an area completely off the tourist track and therefore makes it the perfect point from which to explore the breathtaking scenery of the highlands.
Come and experience the old world charm of Strathisla; it will be sure to captivate you!

Strathisla is located in the foothills of the stunning, World Heritage-listed Knuckles Ranges, so described because they resemble the knuckles of the human hand. Our property is surrounded by scenic tea and spice gardens; cinnamon, cardamom and cloves, just to name a few. There are several scenic walks suitable for various degrees of fitness that take you through local villages, buddhist rock temple, waterfalls (ideal for a refreshing dip), tea estates (where tea tastings can be arranged) and lush vegetation teeming with birds and squirrels.
The property also serves as a small forest reserve in which several native species of mammal, including deer, giant squirrels, civets, mongoose, monkeys and wild boar, exist. The gardens are particularly rich in bird life, including kingfishers, sunbirds, woodpeckers, parakeets, barbets, hornbills and even the odd peackock - all of which can be viewed from the luxury of the verandah.
A great feature of the property is our 15-metre swimming pool and BBQ area, ideal for whiling away a warm afternoon followed by a siesta! A delightful spring-fed waterfall on the property provides a cooling spot to relax during the warm afternoons. There is also a small basketball and volleyball court for guests use.
Our cuisine is prepared by local chef, Priya, who specialises in mouth-watering Sri Lankan, southern Indian and western cuisine.
Being centrally located within the Cultural Triangle, we are within easy reach to most of the cultural sites. Tours to spice gardens, tea factories, the Knuckles Ranges, mini World's End and the bustling historic town of Kandy can be arranged for our guests.
Our rooms are extremely comfortable and spacious, decorated in the colonial style, and offer stunning views of the lush garden and surrounding hillsides.
