The SpaceFor many years our 2 families escaped from the bustle of Stone Town to this most beautiful, unspoilt, powdery white sand beach on the northeast coast of Zanzibar. Gradually, with much support and encouragement from family and friends, we built our family-run beach haven and now welcome guests to share the peaceful beauty and tranquility of this stunning location. We have 15 simple and stylishly comfortable rooms - in 4 guest lodges. Each room faces out on to its own wide veranda, has a sea or a tropical garden view, and is furnished with traditional hand-crafted coconut wood furniture. The Bungalow: 4 rooms all facing the sea have been specially designed with cool natural ventilation. Mchanga Mdogo: 5 rooms on 2 floors, including a family room. Banda: all 3 rooms are over-looking the beach. One has a large covered veranda right on the sea-front Baharini: 2 rooms on the beach-front, 1 facing the tropical garden, with beach just to the side. You can book one room or several with your friends or family. Please note that the Beach side rooms are more expensive because of their position. Because we are so far from town, all catering is done through our small restaurant/bar on site. We love Zanzibar food, and so delicious local flavours and fresh produce are always on our menu. We love vegetarian food too, and our chefs have been trained by our friend, a Goan-Zanzibari creative chef! He used to be Head Chef at the only Vegetarian Indian restaurant in Stone Town. You can travel here by dala dala (local bus - very cheap) or by taxi. If you do come by dala dala, we can pick you up in the village - just let us know. We are trying very hard to be as sustainable as possible - which includes employing or training local people from the village. we have solar water heaters, rainwater harvesting, and re-cycle as much waste as possible (plastics, glass, metal, and composting). We also only grow plants that are happy in our sea breeze and dry coastal environment! Guest AccessWi-fi in public areas, our lovely restaurant/bar, the beach(!), laundry service, bike hire, arranging excursions if requested. Interaction with GuestsWe are very interested in our guests, and welcome conversation and discussion. However, we also appreciate that some people just want to be on holiday, relax and have a bit of quiet and privacy. We do try to be sensitive to this. The NeighborhoodEverything! The changing colours and moods of the sea, the proximity to the village, the weather, the warmth.... Getting AroundDala Dalas run from the village to town. Worth experiencing if you have some time - very good value indeed, but very crowded! Otherwise we can advise on vehicle hire or the local taxis. Other Things to NoteBring aqua shoes for fascinating walks out to the reef at low tide - there are quite a few sea urchins.

The SpaceNyumba Kubwa means 'Big House' in Swahili. The style is rustic and laidback, ecologically adapted to the East African monsoon climate. We've designed the house around the two great trade winds which blow every year, one from the north for the Kaskazi bedroom and one from the south for the Kusi bedroom. Leave your wardrobe behind. You'll only need the odd khanga or kikoi. Here's a place where the sights and sounds of Matemwe Beach compel you to bwaga moyo - to lay down your heart and rest. So, why not mix a cocktail, enjoy a cold beer at our Twende Juu bar, then go upstairs and listen in peace to the rustling all around of palms, or to the low roar of surf crashing onto the distant reef. Guest AccessUnbiased, it's a paradise, but we've come to realise that even in paradise, a link or two with the wider world tends not to go amiss. With that in mind, we offer you the DSTV range plus those unrivalled SuperSport channels, and Zanlink's brand new fast fiber internet connection. As our guests in the Kusi bedroom, you are truly immersed in the heart of Utupoa, so make yourself at home, explore the library, play the piano...or simply find a hammock, or a swing, or a daybed and while away the afternoon. The bedroom is ensuite, with a large four-poster bed and a separate daybed, all with mosquito nets which can be turned down for you at sunset. Each room has its own veranda, and private access to the front garden which leads onto the beach. Interaction with GuestsAs our guests at Utupoa, weinvite you also to use our home as your own and, in particular, to join us for breakfast and any other meals, especially dinner at the famous round table. Joyce and I will be around to advise you about transport and tours and anything else you might need to know about the island. Getting AroundWe are around 50 minutes away from Stone Town and the airport. Daladalas run frequently from the nearby school. The 118 can take you from town and back for USD 2, or we can easily organize local taxis for you.

Km restaurants, shops 1 Km Matemwe 55 Km Stone Town Getting AroundThe history of Zanzibar has been influenced by many nations, including the Arabia, Persia, India, Portugal, Britian and local tribes from the African mainland. This is clearly noticed in the architecture. Stone Town is a place of narrow lanes, intricately carved wooden doors, towers, terraces and fabulous mosques. In 1964 Zanzibar united with Tanganyika to form the present day Tanzania, although it still enjoys a high degree of autonomy within the unified state. Zanzibar is an archepelago of islands in the Indian Ocean that lie 30km off the coast of Tanzania. The two largest islands are Unguja (usually referred to as 'Zanzibar') and Pemba. Zanzibar Town (including it's old quarter of Stone Town) is the capital of Zanzibar, and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Tourism and spices are Zanzibar's main industries are spices and tourism. It is often still referred to as the Spice Islands due to the production of cloves, nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon. Important cultural considerations Zanzibar has a long history of religious tolerance and although the islands are 99% Muslim, alcohol and tobacco are freely available. Visitors are, however, requested to show consideration for the culture of Zanzibar by dressing modestly and refraining from public displays of affection. When walking in towns and villages, women should wear clothes that cover their shoulders and knees. Men should not walk bare-chested or wearing swimming trunks. Many visitors refuse to cover up and this causes offense and often outrage amongst the local population, even though these feelings may not be directly expressed. As one sign says, “Short skirts are like nude” On the beaches swimwear is acceptable, but topless sunbathing is not. During the fast of Ramadan, it is considered the height of bad manners to eat and drink in public places or while walking down the street. Non- Muslims should not enter mosques unless specifically invited to do so. Only take pictures of people if you have their permission, and don’t peer too obviously through the doorways of private houses in Stone Town.

The SpaceNyumba Safi stands on the site where we first built a small two room hut to sleep in as we watched Nyumba Kubwa grow. Before our eldest daughter's wedding, which took place on the beach in front of Utupoa, we renovated the place to make space for the groom's family. We called it Nyumba Safi, which sort of translates to 'The Fancy House', because, well, in-laws. The name stuck, and we are now delighted to share the house with you. There is a self-contained kitchen and dining area, a place to chill out and drink tea on the first floor, and the Zanzibar equivalent of an attic or den upstairs, beneath a makuti thatched roof, where there is a TV, computer, a sound system, and Joyce's favourite round, red couch. Interaction with GuestsAs our guests at Utupoa, we invite you also to use our home as your own and, in particular, to join us for breakfast and any other meals, especially dinner at the famous round table. Joyce and I will be around The NeighborhoodThe most peaceful and dazzling beach on Zanzibar. On this side of the island, tidal variations determine what happens each day. They might limit your own swimming to the highs, but open up walks to the reef on the lows. We hope that your time with us on this beach, always conscious of the rustling of the East African Talls and the distant roar of the fringing reef, will tune out your worries of the world. During the day you can walk to the nearby beach, which takes about 3 minutes. Going there you will cross the Baraka Aquarium, our neighbor, where you can swim with sea turtles! Guest AccessIn the garden in front of the house you can find some of the tropical fruits, vegetable trees, plants and spices that Zanzibar has to offer. Interaction with GuestsAbdulla welcomes you at his house showing you around the place. If you need any information, tips or help, don't mind asking! Getting AroundFrom and to the airport you can arrange a private or a shared taxi. Just ask Abdulla. If you're travelling with your own car a secure parking spot is available at Mwana House! The SpaceLying opposite Mnemba atoll on the dazzling Matemwe beach, 'Utupoa' is Swahili and means people are 'fresh' or 'humanity is cool.' Karibu to our unique house with its huge roof, hidden somewhere between the East African tall palms and utopia. Matemwe represents one of the quieter parts of the island with the most beautiful white stretch of working beach. The fishermen head out daily on their ngalawas and bring the fish into auction and ladies farm seaweed in the low tide. We have 3 ensuite bedrooms available in Nyumba Safi. 'Ngalawa', a tribute to Swahili sailing culture; 'Sultani', echoes of Stone Town; and 'Kijijji' after our own local village. We can accommodate singles, couples, or groups of 6-8. If you are traveling with more people, let us know and we'd be happy to try sort something out. The house comes with its own very well equipped kitchen and a third floor lounge area with TV featuring the famous DSTV channels and a computer with WiFi. In our main house Nyumba Kubwa we have two rooms available, recently remodelled and each with its own veranda leading onto the beach. We charge a bit more for these rather special rooms and we invite our guests to make themselves at home and enjoy the use of the whole house. For meals we are very flexible, inviting you to eat with us or to cook for yourselves or just advising you on the best nearby restaurants. We can certainly organise traditional dinners of fresh seafood brought straight to our front door and cooked by our fabulous Swahili cook Tano. We are set up as a place to stretch out, shut down, sail our ngalawa, watch the sea (or DSTV), and leave recharged - as strongly as our solar back-up system! Please always send us a message to inquire about availabilty as we have more than 1 room. Karibu kwetu! Guest AccessOur simple, ensuite Kijiji double room on the first floor of Nyumba Safi honours Zanzibar's grandmother Bi Kidude, the famous taarab singer who drank and smoked and traveled the world and never married and lived to 100 and barely ever wore shoes as she traipsed through the kijiji - or village - greeting people. Interaction with GuestsAs our guests at Utupoa, we invite you also to use our home as your own and, in particular, to join us for breakfast and any other meals, especially dinner at the famous round table. Joyce and I will be around to advise you about transport Getting AroundWe are around 50 minutes away from Stone Town and the airport. Daladalas run frequently from the nearby school. The 118 can take you from town and back for USD 2, or we can easily organize local taxis for you. Other Things to Note"This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain all! Even if they're a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whomever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond." ~Rumi

The SpaceSeafood, fresh from the ocean, refreshing cocktails, massages and enjoying renowned diving and snorkelling sites like Mnemba Atol, are just some elements of guests daily routines. Matemwe remains one of the most secluded resorts on the island and is perfect for a relaxing and exclusive beach holiday. Matemwe Lodge features twelve, individually decorated chalets. Built from local materials, all are overlooking the sparkling ocean and are surrounded by lush gardens . Each of the private verandas is furnished with large hammocks and sofas, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the stunning views - watching the local fisherman drift slowly past on a traditional dhow boat. The bathroom is large and has a deep bathtub and walk-in shower. Although mosquitoes are rare in Matemwe, all rooms are equipped with a large mosquito net. Guest AccessMatemwe Lodge has two swimming pools, including a multi-level pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar. Matemwe also offer a great range off wellbeing and spa treatments to spoil yourself and for total relaxation. The open-air restaurant overlooks the ocean and has a tranquil lounge area. Seafood is the specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Interaction with GuestsAll chalets are very private and interaction with other guests would only occur in the common areas, i.e. pools, restaurant, bar or on the beach. The NeighborhoodMatemwe is located in the north-east of Zanzibar, surrounded by some of the best beaches of Zanzibar and opposite the well-known Mnemba atoll, hotspot for scuba diving and snorkeling. Matemwe's exclusive location, away from the big hotels, is the perfect location for ultimate relaxation. Beautiful fleets of fishermen in traditional wooden dhow boats sail past on their way to and from their fishing grounds. Getting AroundMatemwe is an area, on the northern side of the East Coast of Zanzibar. There is no way or sign pointing to it. Everyone on the Island knows where it is. From Zanzibar airport or Stone Town it will take approx. 1 hour on a tarred road and thereafter another 15min on a slightly bumpy gravel road through a few local villages. When on the gravel road we have white and blue metal boat signs (with a big white sail), pointing in the right direction, with the Matemwe Logo on it. The boats have to be followed. Self-drive is not recommended. Other Things to NoteACTIVITIES * Diving: There is a Scuba Fish dive centre located conveniently at our Matemwe water sports centre on the property grounds. Diving & snorkeling conditions are excellent around the Mnemba atoll just off the coast from Matemwe * Snorkeling: snorkeling trips to Mnemba atoll can be done with Matemwe's own wooden boats (at extra cost) * Other activities at/around Matemwe: swimming/lounging in/around the pool, guided reef walks & guided cultural village walks, traditional sailing on dhow boats, guided kayak trips, traditional bao game, cycling *Activities on the island: the island offers a range of excursions such as spice tours and visits to Stone Town or Jozani Forest. Due to Matemwe's secluded location, driving time can be an hour to these locations. The Matemwe team can furthermore organize the following activities: Traditional fishing, deep sea fishing, Parasailing, jet skiing, windsurfing (45min away), Kite-surfing, horse riding, cooking classes with women of the village and other activities on request.

Villa Tulia is located right next to the beach, with coconuts palms around, you are just 10 steps from the ocean. We have built it for ourselves. It reflects our lifestyle and passion for Africa. We have travelled around the continent and inside the house, which is built in Zanzibar style, you will find canvas from Mali, carved pieces of furniture from Congo and baskets from Kenya. We are all very busy people and we needed a place to rest, a hideaway from our daily busy schedules. Far from the crowds and Western civilisation. We were seeking simplicity, nature and comfort. A place to relax and forget about stress. We wanted a place which would feel like anything but the office space. We would rather have the breeze than air conditioning. We would not need the TV - we would rather read the books than watch the news. We were looking for a place where we could take long walks on the beach or wading in the ocean, enjoy the flavour of local fruit and vegetables and wake up to the sound of singing women who pick up the sea weeds in the morning. We wanted the space to feel free. Instead of having electric fence, we would keep an open view on the ocean and have 3 Masai men to protect the property 24/7. Villa Tulia is our solution for family reunions or spending time with friends. We love cooking and eating together. We wanted our kitchen to have the ocean view and enough space on the terrace to accommodate big table where we could gather around and enjoy Swahili cuisine. Above all, we always wanted to share our passion with other people. The price is without catering and can be changed. Please contact us. Matemwe is a village on the north-eastern coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, between Mwangaseni and Kigomani. Its economy is mostly based on seaweed farming and fishing. It has beautifull white beaches.

Joyce and I will be around to advise you about transport and tours and anything else you might need to know about the island. The NeighborhoodThe most peaceful and dazzling beach on Zanzibar. Getting AroundWe are around 50 minutes away from Stone Town and the airport. Daladalas run frequently from the nearby school. The 118 can take you from town and back for USD 2, or we can easily organize local taxis for you.

The SpaceUtupoaUpepo gives you three floors of a romantic tower situated as close to the sea as possible and all the space is yours alone. Guest AccessThe tower's quirky bottom floor suggests an underwater experience. If you look up, you will see the hulls of two ngalawa boats floating above you. Here you can have a warm shower after an afternoon swim in the sea or sit quietly at midnight, make yourself a mango smoothie and listen to the reef roaring lowly though the portholes. Climb the sand-coloured staircase as though you are going up for air and then, Matemwe's glorious beach panorama is before you on the tower's middle level, a resting place with its own bar and music system, and open to the breeze. On the top floor, the lovers' nest. Up the staircase as you climb, feel mangrove polished hard by mud and salt, until you reach the warm, red cocoon which is your ensuite bedroom on the top floor. The bed itself is pure ngalawa, carved out of a mango tree and bearing still the swells and scars of its recent history. The boat's prow provides storage and the two outriggers make a frame for the window which is all upepo and a view which, as you lie in bed, will surely take your breath away. We also welcome you to feel at home in our main house where we have a well-stocked library, piano and enjoy sharing meals with our guests. Interaction with GuestsAs our guests at Utupoa, we invite you also to use our home as your own and, in particular, to join us for breakfast and any other meals, especially dinner at the famous round table. Guest AccessUnbiased, it's paradise, but we've come to realise that even in paradise, a link or two with the wider world tends not to go amiss. With that in mind, we offer you the DSTV range plus those unrivalled SuperSport channels in our TV area, and Zanlink's brand new fast fiber internet connection. In the Kaskazi bedroom, you are truly immersed in the heart of Utupoa, so make yourself at home, explore the library, play the piano...or simply find a hammock, or a swing, or a daybed and while away the afternoon. The bedroom is ensuite with a large four-poster bed and a separate daybed, all with mosquito nets which can be turned down for you at sunset. It has its own veranda, and private access to the front garden which leads onto the beach.
