Its strategic location and its fortifications allow the city known under the names successively from Jemma, Aphrodisium and Cape Africa to play a leading role in the Mediterranean until the sixteenth century. Mahdia is first a Phoenician and Roman under the name Aphrodisium2. The wreck of Mahdia, dating back to the first century BC. BC and charged with Athenian art was rediscovered in the twentieth century (circa 1907) 3 six kilometers off Mahdia, it makes it one of the richest underwater archaeological sites diving in Tunisia.

The year 916 saw the arrival of the first Fatimid caliph Ubayd Allah al-Mahdi4 current which gives its name to Mahdia. The city became the capital of the Fatimids in 9214 and remained until 973, when Mahdia is replaced by the Caire5. Besieged for eight months (944-945) by kharidjites led by their leader Abu Yazid, the city resists victoriously.
In 1057, the Zirids take refuge against the threat of Hilaliens. The Norman King Roger II of Sicily in 1148 and holds the remains seated until the fall of the city, in the early days of 1160, at the hands of Almohades6. The city lost its political importance in favor of Tunis but remains an important port. The city faces in its history several seats.
In 13907, over the loss of its market positions in Tunisia in favor of Venice, Genoa organized a military expedition to which it wishes the character of a new crusade, under the pretext of revenge against Barbary piracy Christians, the city obtains the assistance of a body of Anglo-French lords, Louis II de Bourbon, who took command. Architecture and Urbanism
Mahdia has some monuments and attractions.
Skifa Kahla or Zouila Bab, an important fortified gate dating to the origin of the tenth century (built between 916 and 921) and then restored in the sixteenth century, is still one of the access points to the historical center of the city and one of the few vestiges of the old remparts12; Bordj El Kebir, a fortress, with a curved archway and leading into a stately court, since 1595 monitors the tip of Cape Africa.
The Grand Mosque, founded in 916 by the Shiite Ubayd Allah al-Mahdi, has the distinction of being devoid of minaret and has undergone several changes and renovations to be finally rebuilt between 1961 and 1965 according to leading tenth century13.
Hadj Mustapha Hamza Mosque, built in 1772 and restored in the twentieth century, is a fine example of religious architecture at the time ottomane12.
Mahdia is also known for its marine cemetery located on the seafront at the end of the peninsula.
The town of Mahdia has a museum, a regional, installed in the former premises of the municipality that have been completely renovated to accommodate collections. Inaugurated in 1997, its collections have several pieces including ceramics belonging to the Punic and Roman periods, a beautiful set of mosaics, a treasure with its 268 Byzantine gold coins and various objects in the Islamic period
The white sandy beaches, many hotels and turbulent history of the city makes it a popular seaside resort. The tourist area is located north of the city, specifically in front of the district Hiboun, the vast majority of hotels in the city are located by the sea and offers varied.
