HEALTH AND SAFETY At Serenity, we take the health and safety of our guests seriously. Firstly, although windows and beds have nets, please don't forget your anti-malarial measures. The kitchen has a fire blanket. We have surrounded the house by plants that are said to inhibit mosquitoes. If you notice anything that we have overlooked, please let us know about it - talk about it with Eddie. Guest AccessGuests have access to the whole house and compound. However, in the interests of all guests, we would request that they ask the caretaker's permission before picking fruit from the compound. Guests can also access, under supervision from Eddie the caretaker, the gardens outside the compound. Interaction with GuestsEddie is at the house most days - though unobtrusively, to see that all is well and to open the gate if guests happen to return after 10pm. Please let Eddie know if you are coming home after 10pm so he shuts up the dog before opening the gate - otherwise our lovely dog Muute will dash out in the middle of the night to explore! The NeighborhoodThe view from the front of the house is wonderful. The scent from the flowers in the compound, particularly at night, is breathtaking. The environment is safe and friendly - with a local neighbourhood watch. It is within less than 20 minutes of the biggest shopping centres and areas of interest - Game, Shoprite, Garden City, Ndere Cultural Centre, Namirembe and Rubaga Cathedrals, Makerere University, Mulago Hospital Kasubi Tombs and Kavumba Recreational Centre - all worthy a visit. With Nansana supermarkets and markets just ten minutes away. The Kavumba Recreation Centre has a swimming pool, message, sauna and steam rooms and, most wonderful of all, a large zoo! The Ndere Troupe just 20 min away down the Northern Bypass is well worthy a visit. Their performances have traditional dances from different parts of Africa; this is always a good evening out and their food is excellent. Getting AroundYou don't need a car to get to town - lots of matatus on the main road and boda-bodas too, Eddi can also drive you around in the 7-seater Toyota Noah or in his 'kangaroo' for a small price. We can also arrange tours around Uganda, eg a visit to the equator or to a crocodile farm, Murchison Falls in the north or the source of the Nile, whitewater rafting and falls in Jinja, or any other place in Uganda. Other Things to NoteEddie the caretaker, has lived in Kampala since he was a child and has travelled widely throughout Uganda. The SpaceHanging over the valley perched on top a hill looking out over Lake Victoria, the world's second-largest lake, bathed in the summer sun and one of Kampala's best neighborhoods - The Base, a 2 bed, 3 bath apartment, with a study, wireless internet, hot water, and private security, is the ultimate getaway in Kampala. All rooms come with free laundry, and stocked refrigerator to start. A master bedroom, with a 6x6 foot bed and a second bedroom with a 5x6 foot bed is available. The sofa in the living room can also sleep someone comfortably. Belonging to a longtime foreign journalist in east Africa, the apartment is decorated with memorabilia from east Africa. The master bedroom is decorated with Congolese furniture and cushioned window seat overlooking the valley and lake. The room is equipped with wireless speakers to connect with an iPhone or iPod. The guest bedroom, or Trophy Room, with the 5X6 bed, comes along with a private desk, its own set of wireless speakers, a fan, view of the sunset, and mementos from news-moments over the last five years. The NeighborhoodThe Base is situated in Kansanga, a leafy residential area near Lake Victoria and downtown Kampala. The neighborhoods of Kansanga/Muyenga/Kabalagala make one of the most colorful area of Uganda's capital; with upscale and regular restaurants from sushi, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Persian, Ethiopian, Congolese, east African, and so on. It is flush with shopping boutiques, streetside bars and dance halls, and roadside bbq. Public transport can be found at the bottom of the hill, a ten minute walk, on Ggaba road. Personal motorcycle-taxis and private car-taxis associated with Robinson Crusoe can also be arranged. Getting AroundThe Base has a dedicated network of movers and shakers. Our dog - Underdog - lives downstairs outside the apartment building, but on the building premises. We brought her up, and she guards the families' and our lay of land. She is friendly, but energetic. Docile during the day, dogmatic after dusk.

The SpaceMy place has beautiful garden with a stunning city view and lots of tropical birds. It is far away from the hustle and bustle of Kampala city. Occasionally you can spot monkeys in the small forest opposite the veranda. It is actually located in a village near Kampala and Entebbe. Because its location on a hill, the temperatures are ever pleasant and comfortable (max 32 C and min 17 C, but most 24-25 C day and 20-22 night) Inside there is plenty of space and light. The house has: -2 bedrooms with double bed and shared bathroom -1 bedroom with single bed and external bathroom -1 master bedroom with double bed en-suite bathroom with a private veranda with stunning city view -a very spacey living room with large screen TV -a large fully equipped kitchen -dinning room with verandah, enough space to host people for a party (BBQ is available!) Guest AccessGuest have full privacy and have access to the whole house. Guest don't have access to the staff quarters. Interaction with GuestsI will not be around when visitors reside in the house. My manager Juma will be staying in the staff quarters and will be available in case there is a need. He will make use of the kitchen now and then but he will make sure to respect your privacy and will only enter while you are not at home and after prior communication. The NeighborhoodThe house is located in a generally quiet and safe area. It is an upcoming area with many new large residences about 12 km from Kampala city and reachable by car on a gravel road. Upon arrival you are rewarded with some small patches of beautiful tropical forests (one nearby the house with now and then monkeys visible from the verandah of the house) Getting AroundPublic transport is not available near the house but (motorcycle) taxis can be called. Juma the house manager has a good 4x4 car available for rent. Prices to negotiate directly with him. In rush hours you can reach Kampala City centre in one hour. That will take you 30 minutes during off-peak hours. Entebbe Airport can be reached in 40 minutes. Other Things to NotePermanent residents in the house are 4 medium sized, human friendly dogs. If you are not very keen on dogs Moses will be happy to lock them in their cage until you go to bed. Moses is our gardener and is also almost permanently present at the premises. He stays at the staff quarters separate from the house. The house will be cleaned once a week. This is included in the price. If you want it be cleaned more frequently, it can be arranged for an extra fee. Just ask Juma! I never had any security issues at my place since I finished construction in 2007. In any case there are 4 dogs on the compound and a watchman/gardener. Additionally we have a strong community that alert each other in case something would happen.

We're next door to a palace where late King Mwanga and late King Daudi Chwa lived. 10min walk to 1 of the several Christian martyrs shrines visited by Pope Franscis in 2015. Very close proximity to the Hungary Honorary Counsel residence. Getting AroundComplimentary Transport from and to Entebbe Airport is offered on prior arrangement basis at USD 25 or UGX 80,000 each way. Maximum of 2 couples. The SpaceA wonderful apartment to stay in central Kampala along with 4 other apartments in this gated and fully serviced complex including electricity, water, gate keeper, garden, parking, fully equipped kitchen and DSTV and Internet available on request. This apartment is part of a gated complex called acacia apartments. You'll feel safe and secure with a 24 hour gate keeper as well as independent generator power supply in those times when the electricity goes out. The apartment itself is maintained to a high standard and is located in the fashionable location of Kololo in Kampala. There is also a juice bar and wellbeing centre on site within the complex so you can take part in any of the activities taking place there each day including karate and yoga. The apartments are operated by two local managers who can be contacted at any time during the day and the acacia apartments office is onsite too. There are lots of ways to get around from Acacia Apartments and there are a variety of ways to get around the local area. The apartments are centrally located so lots of the town can be explored on foot too.

The SpaceA large comfortable shared house in a quiet, safe Kampala suburb. Please don't pay too much attention to the calendar because we let 8 rooms and it was too complicated to have 8 separate listings. So please get in touch and I will let you know if and what rooms we have available for the dates that you are requesting. We currently have just the two listings, Makindye House and Makindye House Annexe. We let 4 rooms in the main house and 4 rooms in the annexe (1 small @ $8 pppn, 2 small @ $10 pppn, 1 large @ $12 pppn, 1 large $13 pppn, and 1 large $15pppn). Out of consideration for our clientele (students and volunteers etc.) we try to keep our charges low. This however does not mean that the standard of accommodation is low. Just look at the photos! Five excellent staff are employed to clean all rooms, clean dishes, washing and ironing daily and 24 hour guard. Most of our guests come from Europe and the US and include medical students, development workers, development studies students, doctors, volunteers, tourists etc. Our house is a home away from home for our many young visitors. Our visitors often go out together or just hang out on the balcony chilling and chatting. We have fresh salad which comes in every day from the garden and you are welcome to help yourself. Also any fruit from the garden is for sharing with the guests. Friendly informal atmosphere. Safe area. Walking distance from market, internet, shops, public transport and the Makindye Country Club which has swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant. etc. If you a tennis player, please pack your trainers. We have spare rackets you can borrow. A boda boda (small motorbike) ride from city centre. We have three dogs which are NOT allowed in the house. Guest AccessGuests will have access to all the communal areas which is basically everywhere except the bedrooms. Laundry is done every day and you will find it washed and ironed on the laundry shelf outside Room 2. Interaction with GuestsI try to be around when new guests arrive but since I work full time I don't get up for guests arriving in the middle of the night. For those of you arriving late at night or in the early hours of the morning I strongly advise that I arrange for you to be met at the airport by Jimmy our reliable taxi driver. This avoids you having to drivearound late at night trying to find the house. I will leave the key with he night guard and he will show you to your room/s. I usually go to the club after school and get home at about 7.00pm. The NeighborhoodMakindye is one of the most pleasant areas of Kampala. It is safe, quiet, people are friendly and there are plenty of places to eat within a short boda ride from the house. If you walk a few meters up the hill you will get spectacular views of Kampala. Getting AroundIt is a 10 - 15 minute walk down the road to the taxi stage where you can get a taxi ( a small mini bus) into town very cheaply. The main problem with the taxi is that depending on the time of day, traffic can be bad. Most of our guests use boda bodas which are small 50cc motorbikes which can bypass the traffic jams and get you quickly to where you are going. We have a number of motorbike helmets which I strongly advise you to use when you are taking a boda boda. We also have a list of safe boda boda drivers who will pick you up at the house. Jimmy our reliable taxi (private hire) is also available to take you wherever you want to go. Other Things to NoteOne of the nicest things about the house is that all the young people take care of each other and often cook together or go out for a meal or to a bar at the weekend.

The SpaceWe have built a house in Kampala for our annual stay in Kampala. If we do not, we offer it for rent. The spacious living room has a large open kitchen. The interior is complete and with two bedrooms and one and a half bathroom, you can comfortably stay with 4 persons. There is a 5th bed in the spacious living room. We have a small garden and at the end of the day, while sitting on the veranda with a sun-downer, you can enjoy the view and urban sounds in the distance. The whole complex consists of two houses and is completely fenced. You will hardly suffer from power failures, because there is a backup system for electricity. Guest AccessYou can use the whole main-house and garden. Your neighbors, within the walls, are Mama Daisy and her two children: Daisy and Pius. They all speak excellent English and can assist you when you have any questions. Interaction with GuestsBecause I live in the Netherlands, we will communicate by e-mail and, if necessary, by text message or telephone. If you have any questions, I will answer immediately. You will receive the contact information of the caretaker in Kampala before your arrival. The NeighborhoodLocation: Bwaise / Kazo, Kawempe division, on the Northern side of town, not far from Makerere University and Mulago Hospital. Our spacious and comfortable house stands in a typical African neighborhood. You will enjoy the lively atmosphere, beautiful colors, shops, market stalls, and friendly locals. On the location is also available boat access, infinity pool, beach, Pizza oven, bicycles for rent, guided cycling tours, hiking, Kawuku Waterfalls, Outdoor Fireplace, Outdoor BBQ area (extra charge), sauna (extra charge) and massage (extra charge). The apartment has a self contained kitchen. 2 bedroom with double beds, bathroom, kitchen, livingroom anex courtyard Security is on the compound. In the area you can do cycling and boat tours. Via local transport you can access the city center. Also the apartment is famous because of the enormous amount of birds. Office space / meetingrooms rentable on the location. We can arrange airport pickup and transport to other locations if needed. Activities: Cycling, Walking, Ggaba market, Boat etc.. There are restaurants and bars in the area. Mikis Pub (1.000 Meters) for background music, conversation, pool and chicken and chips. Talapia (In the weekend life music, 800 meters) - Both via Boda -- Casia Lodge (1.500 meters) - Top Hill view beer and food, sundowner around 5PM, Petit Bistro, French restaurant cheap and good Hope to see you soon.... The SpaceThe annexe is in the same compound as the main house and is just a few meters away. It shares the same facilities, but has its own shower and toilet. There are 4 separate bedrooms that comprise the annexe. A large, comfortable shared house in a quiet, safe Kampala suburb. Although we have 8 rooms, we only have two listings which are Makindye House and Makindye House Annexe. So, is it best not to pay too much attention to the calendar and contact me directly. We let 8 rooms in total (1 small @ $8 pppn, 2 small @ $10 pppn, 1 large @ $12 pppn, 1 large $14 pppn, 2 at $13 and 1 large $15pppn). Out of consideration for our clientele (students and volunteers etc.) we try to keep our charges low. This however does not mean that the standard of accommodation is low. Just look at the photos! Five excellent staff are employed to clean all rooms, clean dishes, washing and ironing daily and 24 hour guard. Most of our guests come from Europe and the US and include medical students, development workers, development studies students, doctors, volunteers, tourists etc. Friendly informal atmosphere. Safe area. Walking distance from market, internet, shops, public transport and the American Club which has swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant. etc. A boda boda (small motorbike) ride from city centre. Our house is a home away from home for our many young visitors. Our visitors often go out together or just hang out on the balcony chilling and chatting. Interaction with GuestsI am around during term time but return to UK during the school holidays. During these times Grace the housekeeper and Sunday the gardener run the house. I am in regular contact with the house and with the guests whilst I am away. The NeighborhoodIf you walk just a few meters up the hill you will get wonderful views of the city below. Makindye is a quiet neighbourhood with a real sense of community. Neighbours will regularly stop an offer you a lift up the hill. They will guess that you are going to Claire's house. Coffee at Last which is opposite the club has free WiFi and great brownies. Please mention that Claire sent you! The Makindye Market takes place every Friday. It as a wide range of fruit and veg and second hand clothes. There is also a Friday Craft Market further down the hill. Getting AroundI strongly recommend that Jimmy meets you at the airport. He is reliable, reasonable and knows us well. Airport taxi's may be more expensive and will not know where the house is. You don't want to be roaming the hill in the early hours of the morning not knowing where you are going. Just send me your flight details and I will make sure that he is at the airport to meet you. Guests often rent a taxi together to go out on the town but usually use boda bodas to get to work or to go shopping. Other Things to NoteThe Makindye Country Club is a short walk from the house. If you are a keen tennis player we have rackets and anyone is welcome to join the Sunday morning mix-in session 10.00 to 1.00. You can have a look at their website for costs etc. It is possible to get a short term membership but you can also pay a daily rate. There are times reserved for lap swimming.

The NeighborhoodThe Base is situated in Kansanga, a leafy residential area near Lake Victoria and downtown Kampala. The neighborhoods of Kansanga/Muyenga/Kabalagala make one of the most colorful area of Uganda's capital; with upscale and regular restaurants from sushi, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Persian, Ethiopian, Congolese, east African, and so on. It is flush with shopping boutiques, streetside bars and dance halls, and roadside bbq. Public transport can be found at the bottom of the hill, a ten minute walk, on Ggaba road. Personal motorcycle-taxis and private car-taxis associated with Robinson Crusoe can also be arranged. Getting AroundThe Base has a dedicated network of movers and shakers. It is bordered by a lively and cheerful little town of Bugolobi that has all sorts of restaurants serving both local and international cuisine and a world class shopping mall. The Bugolobi neighborhood never sleeps. It has all kinds of bars with live African Bands and other forms of attractions, African Arts which are worth visiting on a trip to Kampala. The house id located on Ismail road, making transport by public taxi or motor bikes hassle free. There's large secure ample parking at the house. We got an Airport pick n drop service at the house (paid for separately). A guest has to give us notice of their wish to be picked from the Airport. The ambiance at the house is that of a home. The guests are encouraged to interact freely with each other. One is free to prepare meals for themselves or stock up on their drinks.     The SpaceMy son and I welcome short, medium or long-term guests to stay with us in our large family home and beautiful compound in a popular Kampala suburb, Kansanga. We're 5-minute walk from the main Kansanga trading and market area and the popular Kabalagala night life is another 5 minutes from there. The room rate includes house and compound cleaning and security. Meals can easily be arranged and negotiated depending on the need. Laundry will be charged separately. Guest AccessThe house has 3-bedrooms, two bathrooms, two verandas, a large living room and dining kitchen area. The compound is lovely with lots of butterflies and birdlife that you can enjoy with your morning coffee on a veranda. Depending on the season, we have fresh vegetables and herbs for you from our garden which is carefully tended by Emma, who also takes care of the compound and house maintenance. His wife, Ruth, works inside the house and keeps a us clean and tidy. Ruth also cooks sometimes for us and loves trying new things! We have a night guard also called Sali who keeps us safe at night – although we are in a very safe neighbourhood and I think Sali just keeps the dog company really. The dog is called Elly – she’s friendly and quiet! Interaction with GuestsWe're out most days at work and school but Emma and Ruth are always around to help with anything. We life a fairly quiet life but enjoy having company if you care to join us, otherwise you'll have your own space. The NeighborhoodThe house just off the Gaba Road which means we're very accessible but off the main road. We're 15 minutes from Munyonyo Speak Resort and access to Lake Victoria. Kansanga, Muyenga and Kabalagala offer a variety of nightlife both local and international restaurants and bars and lots of supermarkets and other shops are within walking distance. International Hospital is just on the other side of the hill from us - a 7 minute drive. Getting AroundLocal taxi transport is available in just a few minutes walk from the house: boda boda (motorcycle taxi), private hire (car) and matatu (minibus taxi) are on a main route to Gaba (the Lake) - 15 mins - or Kampala centre - 20-25 mins.
