The SpaceThe private space that we rent is the ground floor of our three story home. It has four bedrooms and can comfortably sleep seven people. If you need more space than that, we can make a special booking for you to rent our entire three-story home. We're located a few miles east of Sutton at the end of a private road about one mile off the Glenn Highway (Highway 1), the main road linking Anchorage with Canada and the Lower 48. We sit in the middle of the gorgeous Matanuska Valley, famous for its world record-sized garden vegetables and beautiful scenery. We’re just a one-hour drive from Anchorage and about 20 minutes from the stores, shops, restaurants and other attractions of Palmer. Anchorage International Airport is 75 minutes away. Guest AccessWe offer 1,000 square feet (about 111 square meters) of private space on the first floor of our log house. The area is completely separate from the top two floors where we live, with two south-facing entrances. The space has a total of four bedrooms: one with a queen bed, a second with a double bed, a third with two twin beds and a fourth that contains one twin bed. The entire space can sleep up to seven people but we only rent it to a one party at a time. Prices depend on the total number of people, and start out at $100/night, double occupancy. Each additional person is $30/night. All rooms are furnished with a small couch or chair, as well as beautiful rugs, curtains, a night table and a lamp. We keep a large supply of books and maps about Alaska on the bookshelf that you are welcomed to use and borrow. Just bring them back for the next person! There is wireless Internet throughout the space. Guests also have access to the yard, which includes flowerbeds, a berry patch, fire pit, BBQ grill and a deck with an incredible view of the mountains. We encourage all our guests to grill some fresh salmon, sample some of Alaska’s delicious microbrews and enjoy. The large, central bathroom has a toilet, sink, tub and shower, and features hand made art tiles. Guests are also free to use the washer and dryer next to the bathroom. The space also includes a room for cooking and eating with a small table and chairs, a counter and sink, two burner hot plate, microwave oven, toaster, and electric kettle. We stock the small refrigerator and cabinets with coffee, tea, milk, cream and cereal. We operate a small, organic flower farm a few miles away. The space always includes flowers that are in season. For special occasions and larger parties we are able to rent the entire house – two more floors that include an amazing 1,000 square foot great room with panoramic views, two more bedrooms and two additional half baths. Please email us for details on renting the entire property. We will also consider special rates for long-rentals. Interaction with GuestsWe love Alaska and enjoy showing people around this amazing state. Alaska would be the 20th largest country on earth if it were an independent nation! We also love traveling around the world ourselves, and over the last couple of years we’ve had many memorable Airbnb experiences. Our friends are always telling us what an incredible spot we have, so we decided to share it with our Airbnb community. We’re always available to answer your questions, but we give our guests their own space. We look forward to meeting you, hearing your stories and welcoming you to our little corner of paradise. The NeighborhoodMany people who visit us come for the amazing access we have to Alaska’s pristine wilderness. We regularly see moose, eagles, owls and ravens on our 40 acres, and every once in a while a wolf, coyote, grizzly or black bear will wander through the yard. Our land is adjacent to more than a million acres of completely undeveloped state-owned land. We’re located between two crystalline streams that pour out of the mountains. If this were not Alaska, the area around us would probably be designated a national park. There are foot trails that start right out our door, or you can take a short drive up the highway to several trailheads that access the majestic Talkeetna mountains that thrust up over 6,000 feet just a mile north the house. (website hidden)_Mountains Palmer provides excellent access to the wild and rugged Chugach Mountains, which tower on the other side of the glacier-fed Matanuska River from the house. Palmer is also home to the Musk Ox Farm where visitors can see these prehistoric animals who are raised for their incredibly light and warm fiber, which is combed from the animals on a regular basis. Look for the tiny musk ox calves that are born each May. We’re happy to recommend our favorite restaurants, attractions and things to do in communities across Alaska. We’re also happy to recommend nearby rafting, kayaking, climbing and hiking outfitters as well as pilots who can drop you off in the wilderness for an amazing adventure. The area around Sutton is rich with history. The nearby Alpine Historical Park in Sutton interprets the story of the Alaska Native people who have lived in the area for thousands of years, the coal mining era of nearly 100 years ago when Sutton was about the same size as Anchorage, and the construction of the Glenn Highway in the early 1940s, when Alaska was finally linked by road to Canada the Lower 48 states. If you’re up for a road trip, Sutton is centrally located to many of the state’s top attractions. Denali National Park home to a wide variety of wildlife and North America’s tallest peak is just five hours to the northwest. (website hidden) The gateway to Wrangell Saint Elias National Park, which together with Canada’s Kluane National Park forms the largest protected area of wilderness on the planet, is only three hours away to the east. (website hidden) Hatcher Pass is a quick, 45 minute drive and is the only road up into the Talkeetna Mountains where you can hike or ski and enjoy the incredible views. (website hidden)_Pass You can climb on the 26-mile long Matanuska Glacier just an hour up the road in the morning (website hidden) and then raft down the river that flows out of its thick, blue ice that afternoon (website hidden). There is also mountain and rock climbing nearby. If you like to fish, there are several lakes full of trout less than an hour away. World-class salmon fishing is only 45 minutes west of the house in the Susitna River Valley, or three hours south on the Kenai Peninsula. Between our place and all of these destinations are hundreds more rivers, streams, lakes and trails that are ready to be explored. After more than 25 years in the area, we can help you plan your adventures, and recommend others who can help you enjoy a trip of a lifetime. Getting AroundThe best place to rent a car is Anchorage. We also have two old mountain bikes at the house that you’re welcomed to use.

The SpaceOur 2000 square foot home is a one level ranch style house. It sits on the bluff above Matanuska River at the base of beautiful Pioneer Peak in Palmer Alaska. The one level ranch style home features an open concept kitchen/living room with soaring vaulted ceilings, beautiful floor to ceiling stack stone fireplace. There are 3 bedrooms with queen beds in each and a full laundry room. The master bedroom with 5 piece en suite offers privacy and relaxation as well as direct access to the back deck and yard. To see moose lumbering through the neighborhood is a treat in any season or in the summer watch black bears perusing the river bed, especially during the salmon spawning season; best viewed at a distance with binoculars. Enjoy the outdoor fire ring for foil dinners and roasting s'mores and if you're here at the right time pick fresh raspberries for your breakfast. In the summer take advantage of the 20+ hours of daylight and do everything under the sun-LITERALLY! Hike, camp, fish, hunt, explore, shop, swim. Going south, all the way through Anchorage, past Alyeska, through the mountain tunnel to Whittier (the only way to get there; not recommended for claustrophobes) take a beautiful cruise out of Whittier into Prince William Sound and watch million year old glaciers calf. Ride the tram or hike or even take the challenge and run to the top of Alyseka Ski Resort to check out the mountain and valley views then explore the village at the base. To the north, visit the historic town of Talkeetna, maybe you'll meet the mayor who is a cat, or enjoy the scenic drive to the town of Denali, and take a Flight Seeing Trip over and around Denali, (no longer called Mount McKinley). Then to the east of us drive up to Hatcher Pass. Hike around old Independence Mine and learn of life as a gold miner in the 1800's. The list is endless. Our MatSu retreat is magical for a family Christmas gathering, complete with all the holiday decorations. After a brisk day of XC skiing at Hatcher Pass or down hill skiing at Alyeska plan on a night cozied up to a warm, festive fireplace in a Christmas tree lit family room, popcorn, movies or family game night. The quaint town of Palmer itself offers historic insight to the early settlers. We are a water tower town with lots of community pride. We'll leave you a list of our favorite restaurants, artists, politicians, Farmers Markets, and even a great place for a pedicure, full service day spa or a steamed barber straight edge shave. Local taxi service is available but a rental car is recommended. The great thing about our Matanuska Susitna Valley Retreat is you can have stay-cations in the middle of your vacation like exploring the private HOA maintained river trails, enjoy Friday Fling Farmers Market in downtown Palmer, check out the Visitor's Center and learn of the 100's of years of the valley's history then walk through the Palmer gardens. See if your town is on the world sign post. There is plenty to do locally as well as excursions over multiple days. Guest AccessJust a few minutes walk away our guests will have access to hiking trails, fishing, and sport vehicle trails. Eight miles north is the town of Wasilla where the heartbeat of America, Walmart, proudly serves the Mat-Su Valley, Valley Cinema showing latest released movies, pubs serving their private brews of beers and ales. To the south 40 miles is Anchorage with easy access to Ted Stevens International Airport and downtown metropolitan and Native Alaskan shopping. Interaction with GuestsGenerally we are living in an apartment on the property when we are hosting guests. We are available to answer questions or help out where needed. We usually interact a lot with our guests but we don't need to if privacy and retreat is preferred. At times we may need to access the house but we will always knock or make arrangements with our guests beforehand. The NeighborhoodThe reason why all the people in this neighborhood live here is: #1-the spectacular mountain views #2- River Bend is a unique sort of neighborhood in Alaska because it is meticulously planned and developed, yet rustic, and has a high code of maintenance Getting AroundMat-Su valley is considered to be very rural so public transportation isn't readily offered. Taxi service is available but a rental car is recommended. Other Things to NoteAs exciting as it is to see wild animals; guests must remember THEY ARE WILD! (The animals, not the guests) Should moose or bear or a fox come into the yard DO NOT approach them. Photograph from a far and zoom in because no matter how fast a person thinks they can run....the animal can run faster! It is spectacular to to see the majesty of a bull moose so be smart and keep your distance to ensure the memory will always be a good one!

Because it is private, residents enjoy the freedom of strolling to the lake or just getting a power walk either in the mornings or evenings. From Palmer the drive to the cabin in the woods is 7 miles of paved roads. Don’t forget your camera. The cabin in the woods is located on 5 rural acres with a fairly steep driveway up the mountain. No problem in summer for a car. The cabin is all log . One bedroom, large living room, spacious kitchen and bathroom in 576 sq ft. The second bedroom is a separate 12 x 12 cabin just steps from the main cabin. Our location in the famous Matanuska Valley gives you a centralized yet rural location to start your exploration of the great state of Alaska starting from the spacious front covered deck. The view stretches from the Knik River valley in the east , scans all the way along the Chugach Mountain Range including 3300foot(1005 meters) high Pioneer Peak to the Cook Inlet and far off Anchorage in the South West. From the Muskox farm just 15 minutes down the road to beautiful Hatcher Pass and its Historic hard rock gold mines to the Pioneer Museum in downtown Palmer you will run out of time before you run out of things to see and do. A 1 hour drive north up the Glenn Highway(hwy 1) is some of the most spectacular scenery the road system has to offer. At the end of that hour you will be at the Matanuska Glacier for the photo op of a lifetime. A must do drive. On the way back don’t forget to stop off at Sheep Mtn. lodge for a wonderful meal. Be sure and glass the mountain peaks behind the lodge for its namesake, Dall sheep. An hour the opposite direction is the eagle river nature center amid towering peaks on three sides. Walking trails will take you into the heart of this beautiful valley. If you haven't had enough hiking on the way back you can drive up the mountain to Thunderbird falls(a short hike) and beautiful Eklutna lake, the main source of Anchorages drinking water. Driving north on the Parks Highway (hwy 3) is also scenic with lots of places to stop and take pictures. The turnoff to Talkeetna is 2 hrs from the cabin. If it is a clear day the trip into Talkeetna could yield a fantastic view of Mt McKinley from the pull out just before you start down the hill into town. Once back out to the main highway continue north and look for the pull out once you have crossed Hurricane Gulch. This 1050 ft (320 meters) span is a breathtaking 254 feet(77 meters) above the white water of Hurricane Creek. Another 63 miles will put you at the turnoff to Denali Park. This is a long day trip so as evening approaches, even though the sun doesn’t set until close to midnight be on the look out for moose and caribou on the way home. In this area everyone is on 5 acre lots so there is plenty of privacy and it is very quiet. Most of the time you are hearing nothing but wind through the trees and the birds chirping.

Interaction with GuestsWe may or may not be available during the day as we own an engineering business in Palmer. We would be happy to help out with finding local activities or hiking trails when we are home or you can text us any time. The NeighborhoodWe are in a fairly rural area, where the neighbors know each other and the moose roam through. It's a birch-spruce forest, typical of south central Alaska. Getting AroundNo public transit at this location. You could borrow one of our bicycles! Other Things to NoteWe have had a lot of bookings for visiting relatives of Matanuska Valley residents. The cabin is independent of our house and we aren't disturbed by any amount of comings and goings. Only the number of guests who are accounted for in the reservation can stay. When walking on trails around the property, your chances of seeing wildlife are high. It's best to see them from a distance. For your safety, please sing, talk or make some kind of frequent noise. This will alert the moose in the area of your approach. Always be alert of your surroundings. Moose, especially momma moose, are NOT docile like cattle. They can be very dangerous. More folks are killed in Alaska by moose than by bears (both very rare, and usually if they are caught by surprise and/or have babies with them). If you see a moose, stop walking. Then slowly turn and walk back from where you came. If a moose's ears are down flat against his/her head, he/she is agitated and may charge. May and June are particularly noteworthy, as this is calving season. It is a good idea to keep your cell phone with you when you are in the woods. Please note that the fence around the vegetable garden is electric, and delivers quite a shock if touched. We have a chocolate lab named Daphne. She is an outdoor dog, and if she sees you coming up the driveway she will greet you. No need to fear; she loves people to pieces and just wants you to throw a stick for her. She has tons of allergies, so please don't feed her. She is also not allowed in the rental space.

The SpaceA picture is worth a thousand words, so I recommend that you first look up the website for Windflower Bed and Breakfast, Palmer, Alaska, and take the video tour. That being said, this, of course, is the land of the Midnight Sun. You can watch it set from the patio next to your private entrance. The BBQ and fire pit are for your use only. The entry is spacious with an ample closet and seating for changing shoes. Breakfast is served on the lower floor where you are free to stretch out and relax at any time. Quiche, waffles, crepes, omelets, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee are menu options. On the upper floor, the Sunset Suite, is a sitting area with flat screen TV, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, and coffee maker. Internet access is free. A DVD library, popcorn, and board games are included. The separate bedroom has a very comfortable queen size bed and a commanding view of the mountains in both directions. There is a separate bath with shower. In the sittings room, a separate twin size bed and a pullout sofa bed can sleep as additional two guests at an extra charge. Interaction with GuestsThe fun part about hosting is getting to know my guests but the extent of that interaction is entirely up to them. I am present throughout my guest's stay. The NeighborhoodI am blessed with good neighbors who are there when you need them. Also, the neighborhood is quiet, safe, and fairly upscale ( by Alaskan standards, at least) though by no means exclusive. All the lots are 1 acre and we're surrounded by farmland. Breathe in deeply because the air is, in all likelihood, cleaner than from where you come . Also, guests frequently remark how unusually peaceful it is hereabouts. Getting AroundAlthough public transportation does exist, it's limited and you really need a vehicle to get around in the Valley. There's ample off-street parking on the property.
