In 1999 the Arizona. Department of Economic Security posted the population of Tubac at 1188. With the average annual daily temperature at 72 to 78 degrees, residents enjoy an upscale, active lifestyle that includes a plethora of outdoor activities. Other Things to NoteSanta Gertrudis Lane, just south of the historic Tumacacori Mission on the east Frontage Road near Tubac, is for the birds – literally. On any given day you may see from two to 20 cars parked at the road’s overhead sign. Down the tree-lined, privately owned dirt lane that ends at the Santa Cruz River visitors stroll, binoculars in hand, waiting to spot birds, birds, birds. “This is one of the best bird-watching places in Southern Arizona right now,” said Jill Anderson, a Chicago native who was taking an extra day of vacation with her partner, Dan Anzia, ending a business trip to Tucson. “We read about this place online and, luckily, ran into it when we were looking for the Anza Trail. It’s been terrific.” The lane, once a major crossing of the Santa Cruz River, was closed to public traffic two years ago when Burlington Northern Railroad deemed the rail crossing on the east side of the river to be unsafe. The closing was a hardship for folks living in the hills above the river, but the lack of traffic created a peaceful sanctuary for birds and wildlife residing and migrating along the river.

The SpaceIt is a mesquite bosque. You will hear owls and every now and then a train whistle blows in the late evening. There is no hustle and bustle, just quietness and relaxation. Guest AccessYou can enter all the property with the exception of my personal home. Interaction with GuestsI am available 24/7 for any questions or information you may need to make your stay more comfortable. The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood is quiet and nestled in a mesquite forest. We have a mini-ranchette across the road. You are close to restaurants and events and steps away from the De Anza Trail which leads you to the Tumacacori Mission, 3 miles south. Getting AroundYou can walk or ride a bicycle to all the shops and grocery. Other Things to NoteTubac, Arizona is the second oldest Presidio west of the Sabine River. The Tubac Presidio was founded in 1752 by Spaniards looking to found New Spain for King Carlos III. We host the first state park in the state of Arizona, featuring a regional museum, an underground archaeology display, and other historic buildings. Tubac’s most famous Spanish resident was Juan Bautista de Anza, who later went on to found another presidio called the Presidio of San Francisco in 1776; the Tumacacori Mission, establish in 1691 by the Jesuits, in a location near a “Sobapuri” settlement on the east side of the Santa Cruz River. Services were held in a small adobe structure built by the inhabitants of the village. After the O’odham rebellion of 1751, the mission was abandoned for a time. In 1752, the village was reestablished and in 1753 the church of the Mission San José de Tumacácori began construction at the present site on the west side of the Santa Cruz River. This first church structure was erected for use by the mission in 1757. The architectural style of the church is Spanish Colonial. Both Tubac and Tumacacori have historical reenactments, there is a historical reference library and historical society. Bird watching along our Santa Cruz River is famous (Buntings, Kingfishers, Towhees, Tanagers, Yellowthroats, Yellow Grosbeaks, Flycatchers, Owls, Raptors and a large variety of hummingbirds to name a few). Art galleries, a variety of gift shops, clothing stores and a leather store (offering handmade purses, wallets and belts) are open all year round. There is a rug store, featuring rugs from all over the world from antique to new, classic traditional to contemporary, formal city rugs, handsome village rugs and increasingly rare nomadic rugs. Tubac has, furniture stores specializing in handmade mesquite, Mexican and folk-art furniture. There are numerous jewelry stores, specializing in Indian, special art designs and gold and silver creations. A variety of restaurants for all tastes are centrally located. We have hiking, climbing, golfing (one in town and numerous ones only moments away, 54 holes in one day, totally possible.); shopping in Mexico is 20 minutes south with fun restaurants and curio shops. Close by is Madera Canyon where you can see the shy and illusive Elegant Trogan. Tubac is at 3400 ft, which is cooler than Tucson or Phoenix. Our river runs from south to north – yes, it does run, maybe not all of the time, but definitely in the a.m. hours.
