This house was built just three years ago. Right across the street from the Rio Sands Motel this house is in a beach neighborhood. Also within two or three blocks are several restaurants, a tavern and the popular Pixie Deli. This is only our 2nd year as a vacation rental, so enjoy our low prices. With the Rio Del Mar beach community nearby you might not need to use your cars for a few days while you walk everywhere you need to go. We have three off street parking places right behind the house for your use exclusively. The 2 block walk to the sand and water is a smooth level walk. No stairs, no cliff, it is all right there. This is the beach house vacation experience. Please note , no pets, no smoking, no big parties. Holidays stays will be a little more than regular reservation dates.

The SpaceWe have 10 acres next to land without fences so you will get to enjoy nature: just hang out on the deck, take a hike in the woods, watch the hummingbirds, pet the goats, go to the beach or gaze at the stars - as long as the moon isn't full. ; ) During the summer, if there isn't any nightly fog, we can see the Milky Way here. To check our availability, click on the "Add your Travel Dates" link above the cabin photos. And yes, if it isn't available, it is already booked! If you want to stay here on a weekend during the summer, you will need to make your reservation request about 6 months in advance. We do, however, occasionally get a cancellation, so if you want a date that's already booked, you can let us know and we will notify you of a cancellation. If you want to stay here, but the Mushroom Dome is booked up, we now have the Hummingbird Haven available: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/6562632. You will have the same access to nature and a great view! (Please read all of this description before making a reservation.) The cozy and clean semi-rustic cabin has a loft under a geodesic dome (the "mushroom cap"). In the loft is a brand new Queen-sized Casper Mattress which allows for very comfortable sleeping and just hanging out, We provide clean sheets and pillow cases. Plenty of blankets are also provided. In the loft, we have a 24" Flat Screen with a DVD player (no TV) for movies. (We have over 80 movies you can view as well.) On the main floor (a Pentagon) is a couch that doubles as a narrow futon (which could sleep a third person for an extra $10. a night), as well as a mini kitchenette. Here you will find a professional double hotplate, small refrigerator, toaster oven, blender, Hot Air Popcorn Popper, French Coffee press, a salad spinner - even a mixer- and all the dishes and equipment you would need to prepare a snack or a meal or to open a glass of wine. We have 2 tables where you can enjoy meals, games, etc.: 1 inside and 1 outside on the large deck that faces the redwoods. We also have a barbecue grill on the deck with an extra gas burner on the side. We provide Organic Coffee, teas, Oatmeal, popcorn, butter, honey, sugar, nutritional yeast (for the popcorn!) spices, oil and vinegar and various snacks. Our well water is treated by an ozonator, a UV light and a soft water filter. If you have a baby and you won't be needing the second bed, make your reservation for 2 and let us know if you will need a small pad for the loft. And if there are 2 of you but you want to use the second bed, please make your reservation for 3. The cute bathroom has a Travertine shower, custom tiled sink and a Natures Head self-contained composting toilet. Some guests have had a problem with our bathroom, so I want to make it clear that we have a curtain for the door to the bathroom and we require that you put your used toilet paper in the trash. (it won't smell) If you follow the instructions for how to use the toilet, it won't have any odor. We provide towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner, a hair blow-dryer, etc. (a word of caution: the bathroom has a low ceiling. If you are over 6' you may have to do a little ducking here and there.) As Saturdays are very much in demand, (and we like to be free on Saturdays), we require a minimum 2 day stay on the weekends. Keep in mind that Friday and Saturday nights are $125. each, starting March 2016. Therefore, to stay here on a weekend will cost $250. plus the $30. cleaning fee plus 12% ($34) that airbnb will charge you and the 11% Santa Cruz County Transient Tax of about $30. So the total for the weekend will be about $344. To stay for 2 days mid-week costs a grand total of $307. To stay here for 1 night, midweek, will cost a total (including airbnb fees and S.C. County taxes) of about $172. On 3 day holidays, we require a 3 day reservation. (This includes Presidents Day, Memorial Day, M.L.King day, and Labor Day.) But to stay here on a weekend, you will usually have to book the cabin 6 - 10 months in advance - unless you are lucky to find a cancellation! Santa Cruz County considers places like ours taxable for the "Transient Occupancy Tax" that is charged at hotels in our county. So since airbnb isn't set up yet to charge this, and we are not allowed to include it in the rates we charge, we will need to collect this 11% tax from any guests that stay here. (As of April 15th, airbnb will be collecting the tax for all reservations made on and after April 15th, 2016! Yay! Thank you airbnb!) So unless you made your reservation on or after April 15th, it is due upon arrival with either cash or check. So generally, the tax will come to $15. a night. I will let you know in my "Directions Letter" exactly how much yours will come to. Check-in time is between 4 and 10pm. If you want to come sooner or later, this can sometimes be arranged. Check-out time is noon. As we have experienced some damage from guests, we are now requiring a $100. security deposit which will be returned to you 48 hours after check-out - as long as you haven't caused any damage! Although it feels very isolated here, we are less than 10 minutes to Aptos Village where you will find stores, restaurants, a theater, a health food store, Safeway, etc. We are centrally located on the Monterey Bay: 10 minutes from the beach (Rio Del Mar and Seacliff State Beach) as well as 10,000 acre Nisene Marks State Park for miles of hiking or dirt biking in the Redwoods and along Aptos creek. We are 20 minutes to downtown Santa Cruz, 25 min. to the Beach Boardwalk, 45 minutes to Monterey and the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, 50 min. to Carmel and 1 1/2 hours to Big Sur going south and San Francisco to the North. Yup, we are located in one of the most beautiful areas of California. (these times are not during rush hour(s) ; ) One of the attractions that we take for granted is that you can see stars here at night - unless there is a bright moon or clouds. If you love hummingbirds, bring your camera. Our garden is the year-round home to many Anna Hummingbirds. (We usually have about 250-500 year-round) During the summer, we are also called home by many Rufus and Allen Hummers as well. So you have got to see our "Hummingbird Airport" where we feed them about 160 oz. of syrup on a summer day! Please, no smoking in the cabin or on the property. We used to let smokers stay here, but they stink up the cabin and it is a fire hazard outside. Some cell phones don't work here, but since we have free wifi in the cabin, if your phone works with a wifi network, you are good to call. You can sometimes get Verizon service on the swinging seat by the driveway. To learn about things to do in the area, do an internet search for Santa Cruz, CA. Dogs are welcome to stay here but with a few requirements: since we have so many animals, we require that your dogs be kept on a leash when outside (the goats get very nervous with loose dogs). Also, we don't allow dogs in the loft or on the couch downstairs so please bring a doggie bed. (your doggie can go on the couch if you bring a cover for it) If that is difficult, let us know and we will provide a doggie pillow. We have a gate that we can set up so your dog can be off the leash on the deck. If you are bringing a small child, we can put a folding futon (2/3rds of the futon or a foam pad next to the bed ) Just let us know ahead of time. Keep in mind, though, that a child should not be left in the loft by themselves as the bed is fairly high up against the rail. As we are about 3 miles to the nearest bus stop, it is pretty difficult to stay here without a car. You are invited, if you feel you would be harmonious here, to come join us on our developing Permaculture farmette. Pet the goats, check out our chickens, cats, miniature dogs and enjoy the very fresh air. We will give you a little goat milk if you would like to try it. And if you come here when there is no moonlight and the sky is clear, you will see lots of stars. Tired of the heat in the summer? Since we are on the edge of the "fog belt", it can be both sunny and cool here. If you want a noisy place, you won't like it here: most of the sound here comes from the birds or crickets chirping, the tree frogs croaking and the breeze blowing through the trees. People do live on the land here though, so don't expect it to be totally devoid of human sounds and the occasional chain saw. : ) (We feed the goats oak branches) Guest AccessThere is free wifi in the cabin, great well water and some good hiking trails right off the deck as well as a nature sandbox in the dry creek bed under the redwood grove. (In the winter, it can have running water) Guests are also welcome to wander around, visit our animals on our little "farmette" (3 goats, lots of chickens, 2 small dogs and cats) and ask questions. Interaction with GuestsI almost always interact with our guests. I love to make them feel welcome and at home, show them the hummingbirds and share my knowledge of the great places to go in our beautiful area. Let me know if you don't want to interact with me and I'll leave you alone quickly. ; ) The NeighborhoodEven though we live only a 7 minute drive to Aptos village and the beaches, it feels very remote and private here. It is usually very quiet at night - sometimes we can hear the ocean waves crashing on the beach. There is lots of land to hike on and explore here as well. We have a little community of artists, musicians, healers, construction workers - all enjoying the wonderful nature and shared living here. Getting AroundWe are 3.5 miles to the closest public transit, so if someone needs a ride from Aptos, I am willing to pick them up. There is parking for the cabin, a short walk down the driveway. Other Things to NoteOccasionally, we have a power outage during the winter. If that happens, we will provide battery operated lights. If the main road is blocked by a downed tree, I'll let you know how to get in or out of our area.

The SpaceCome experience a peaceful and quiet get-a-way above the fog line in the Aptos mountains with a million dollar view! The cottage overlooks an old apple orchard that is surrounded by majestic redwood trees. Relax on a large private deck overlooking the peaceful valley and soak in the sunshine. Lay around by the pool or swim in a beautiful setting. Take a walk along the quiet country road. Whatever you choose to do during your stay, there is something about this peaceful little haven that will sooth your senses. ***Please read the description and amenities completely before booking your reservation.*** Apple Orchard Cottage is located 5 miles from the historic and quaint little town of Aptos, CA. It is a 15 minute drive from Aptos Village of which 2 miles wind through a lush canopy of trees on a paved, one lane private road. It is 15 minutes from town and the beach. Aptos has great restaurants, a theater, shopping, coffee shops, Safeway and CVS as well as a natural food store. Aptos is centrally located to Santa Cruz and Monterey. The cottage is single level and has close and easy access from parking. The Apple Orchard Cottage, also referred to lovingly as “The Granny Unit”, shares property with our home but has plenty of privacy. Amenities: Kitchen (full and functional): Gas stove/oven, microwave; refrigerator- full size; coffee pot and coffee bean grinder; toaster. The kitchen is also stocked with an assortment of basic condiments—olive oil, vinegar, sugar, salt & pepper, organic coffee beans and tea. Infra-red Char-broil BBQ is on the deck. Bedroom: Comfortable memory foam queen size bed; 100% cotton 300 thread count sheets; full mattress encasement from “Protect A Bed” the ultimate in bedbug and dust mite protection technology. The comforter is either in a cotton duvet cover (or has a cotton sheet over the top) which is washed after each guest. Pillows are double cased too. There are plenty of extra blankets and pillows. Bathroom: Large tiled shower, soap, shampoo and conditioner; hair dryer. The bathroom is off of the bedroom so everybody has to go through the bedroom to use the bathroom. There is one step down into the bathroom. Living room: Sofa love seat and day bed with trundle. 30" HD Flat Screen TV with DVD player and a large variety of DVD's for your viewing pleasure. The TV *might* come in sporadically but cannot be counted on. Deck-Private: The deck wraps around the front and side of the cottage and has a stunning view. There is a table and chairs under a canopy that allows filtered sun. Also 2 "Zero Gravity" lounge chairs to relax in. Smoking is NOT permitted INSIDE the cottage; however, it is allowed OUTSIDE on the deck, away from the cottage windows. The swimming pool on premises is available for use. The water temperature varies throughout the year as it is SUN HEATED ONLY. It reaches 80 degrees in the summer as it has full sun exposure all day! In the off seasons or when there is no sun, it can be chilly and enjoyed by "polar bears". Maybe someday we will have it heated year round. The pool is a shared area but is not used very often, so don't be surprised if you seem to have it all to yourself! Again, the pool is shared with other people and a couple neighbors. This is paradise for the person who loves wildlife, as in nature not partying. Deer abound. Bobcats are frequently seen wondering the property. Wild turkeys come and go. Bunnies frolic around the property most the day. Birds are abundant. Swallows arrive in April, leave in July. About 10 hummingbirds live here year round. We have a quiet and friendly dog named Riley that wanders the property, but he will not be able to get into your private area. We cherish the quiet and solitude. The Apple Orchard Cottage is truly a rare and peaceful get-away from the hustle and bustle of life. The Cottage is in a country and rural setting but has all amenities needed for comfort, relaxation and enjoyment. Your hosts live on the property and are near enough should you need anything, yet far enough to ensure your privacy. The property is also shared with a couple other people whom you may see wandering around. There is an occupied trailer behind the cottage but does not share any space with the cottage. Also, on the property sporadically are a couple of maintenance folks. The lawn guy comes every other week on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon; his work takes about an hour and a half. Our pool company is on site every Friday morning. We are in the country (with only a partial rooftop of a neighbor’s house being visible) but we don’t own all the property around us; therefore, you may also hear our neighbors going about their lives. Cell phone service is sporadic at best with all services but Verizon. Verizon works great most (98%) of the time. There is no land line phone in the cottage. Wi-Fi wireless can be accessed from the cottage and sometimes from the pool area. The Wi-Fi service accommodates BASIC internet usage only, and is NOT intended for streaming, gaming or any other high bandwidth usage. Enjoy!

No loud music in general, it's a peaceful kind of neighborhood. I will have the house very clean for you, but it is not a hospital. Some folks have very strict ideas about what a clean house means. The reviews rate me pretty favorably in this area but if there is a spot on a plate the dishwasher missed, don't panic, I'll call the hazmat squad! While I may be nearby I will certainly respect your privacy. Don't hesitate to call me with any questions or help needed.

The SpaceDouble bed in guest room, plus I can make a single futon available for a child or extra person on request. Private, adjoining guest bathroom has shower, large counter. I provide towels, soaps, shampoo and hair dryer. Guest AccessGuests have access to private room and bath. Coffee and tea will be available in the morning. Guests may use fridge and microwave, but will not have full use of kitchen for cooking. Guests may use back yard, including firepit. Interaction with GuestsI will greet guests if I am home, answer questions, but will generally allow guests their privacy. The NeighborhoodI love that my home is close to both beach and forest, shops and nature. Getting AroundMain bus lines available within 1/2 mile walk. It is probably best to have a car, I have 1 off-street parking space. Driveway is steep - see photo. Other Things to NoteI have two small rescue dogs - Otis and Bella, they have run of the house, except guest room and bath. They will bark when guests come to the door (to protect me!) but don't bark incessantly, and are quiet in the evenings. Otis is very friendly, Bella is new so still a bit shy. If you are not dog-lovers, my house is probably not the place for you. Note that the walk back to house from beach is uphill.

The SpaceMy news this season is that I'm now able to offer my guests sole use of all the main house, deck, and loft. My space on the ground floor is now a self contained apt,, so I have no need to share with you. I enjoy my privacy and respect yours. I want you to relax and enjoy my home, and your private space as you would your own. The bedroom space is open to the view, yet private and sound proof and entirely yours. So relax and enjoy your queen-size bed. Guests report it to be hugely comfortable with a down comforter and nice linens. Wrap yourself in a cozy, luxurious spa robe and slippers for you to borrow during your stay. Perfect to go back to bed with morning coffee, or end your day with a good book and pleasant thoughts. Sweet dreams! In the loft also is a long table for you to set up your work space. There is a chest of drawers and rack for hanging clothes, and beach towels to borrow. Beside your bed is a charger for iPhones. And you have your PRIVACY! The easy carpeted stairs go to your full, private bathroom with shower. Guest Access Come to your private entry, through the blue gate, onto the very large deck and all, including the charming, lighted, gurgling fountain, propane fire pit flanked by comfy chairs, and propane barbecue grill and dining table, awaits you. Kick back, breathe deeply, relax, and follow your bliss. This deck at night has become one of my favorite places. To me it's magical(URL HIDDEN) Step inside and the dramatic loft, dining room, kitchen, great room and full bath with shower are yours to enjoy. All private. The kitchen is fully equipped. For breakfast there's a Keurig beverage maker with coffee, tea, and cocoa, fruit, yogurt and granola. Enjoy a complimentary bottle of wine, or Martinelli's sparkling cider. Your choice. After all, you're in California. Several days before your arrival I'll ask you to tell me which and what kinds of these you prefer, so I can have them onboard for you. So breakfast might look like juice, granola & yogurt, toast or muffin, & coffee or tea. Do you use cream or milk? Anyway, you get the idea, but I'll try to tailor to your wishes, Interaction with Guests My whippet, borzoi (Russian wolfhound) and I have our spaces downstairs. We're all quiet and don't bark. Any or all of us are here to talk, answer questions, or make suggestions. Your comfort is our goal! Please note: I charge only a nominal cleaning fee, so please leave home clean as you found it!!! The Neighborhood We're located in a lovely, quiet, family neighborhood. Not a party place; we respect our neighbors! Gotta happen. Thanks for respecting our boundaries inside and out! We have a 2 nights minimum. After all, it is my HOME, and not a hotel. At the same time, your comfort and wishes are a priority for me! Thanks. Getting Around There is a bus line 2 blks. away. Car or bike is better. Other Things to NoteSetup not suitable for toddlers or small children. Not kid proof or appropriate. Guests must be 21 yrs. or older. The SpaceClean and comfortable, private-entrance studio in Aptos. This studio is perfect for two people enjoying a vacation in Santa Cruz. We are located near many attractions that Santa Cruz has to offer, whatever your interests may be. Although we prefer two guests, we can accommodate a third guest for $15.00 extra a night. In the case that you have a party of three, we are happy to make up our couch as a bed. Our rental is $125.00 per night, with a cleaning fee of $40.00. For Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, and the weekend of 4th of July, the price is $125 per night. We require a 3 night minimum stay for Memorial and Labor Day weekends and a 2 night minimum stay for the weekend of July 4th. Check out time is 11:00 A.M. The check out time is strictly 11:00 A.M. (we have it cleaned at that time everyday that a guests check out); unless discussed before hand. We can be flexible with this, but need to have enough time to change the appointment time with the cleaner, so we prefer to discuss this before arrival. Guest AccessThere is a small kitchenette inside the studio, including a refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, a small BBQ (available upon request), Keurig coffee machine, etc. We will also provide a light breakfast (oatmeal, yogurt, granola, fruit, etc.) While you're not out and about enjoying our beautiful city, we have premium Direct TV (with many movie and music channels), WiFi, and our favorite game, Scrabble, to entertain your time in the studio. There is a queen-size bed, with an incredibly comfortable feather top, and extra blankets if needed. We understand that not all like or can enjoy a soft bed (while others love it), so we are more than happy to remove the feather-topper if one does prefer a more firm bed to sleep on. We also provide towels and washcloths, the essentials (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.), a hair dryer, and iron/ironing board. Interaction with GuestsThis is definitely a private studio, so our interactions will be minimal; but with that said, we are around and available to any needs or issues that may arise. Sometimes we are there to greet you upon your arrival, and sometimes we are both stuck at work. However, one of us will come meet you during some point in your stay. We are both here for to assist with any needs, answer any questions, or just share the details about our hometown (either in person or over the phone or text). Although we are both very busy with our jobs, we very fortunately have a lot of flexibility, and will be there immediately if needed. Getting AroundThere is bus stops very close to the house going towards both Watsonville and Capitola/Santa Cruz. However, the public transportation in Santa Cruz is a little inconvenient when traveling to certain portions of the city. Because of this, we would recommend having a vehicle if possible. If you do have a vehicle, we have plenty of free parking on the property. Other Things to NoteWhile our studio is very private and quiet, we do have our family Crossfit workouts in our garage gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights from 5 - 6 pm. The garage does share a wall with the studio, but we stay as quiet as possible while we have guests.
