The SpaceThere is not a house, quite like ours (anywhere!) We do not offer an ordinary experience. So please read our listing carefully. We are not for everyone. Our house is unconventional and contains global art, such as mosaic Day of the Dead decorated skulls, mannequins, sarcophagus, etc. (however strange, most kids and visitors love it!) Aside from that...
We are in walking distance to everything in downtown Arcata, and 5 minutes drive to the ocean and even less to great hiking trails through the Redwoods! Plus my house is amazing! SKYEHOUSE is a Mosaic Shangrila; and is listed as a landmark destination, for visitors to Humboldt County. Guests who have stayed here often return. Our home itself, is not large, about 2200 sq ft. But it feels larger, and you could never see everything. But remember, we aren't renting the whole house, but the large, upstairs, private suite. Which is lovely, quiet and uncluttered.
LARGE Upstairs Skyelight Room. This is really more like a small separate apartment. Very private and separate from the rest of the house. It sleeps 2 in a heavenly queen bed. There is a refrigerator, private bathroom & shower, deck, quiet, books & dvd's, cable TV. Wifi and desk. *Note: we can also offer a futon, bedding, and towels for an additional 3rd guest for $15 per night, please pay on arrival)
NOTE: *Please note that there is a charge of $20 (per night), Paid to us on arrival, which covers a mandatory city and county tax that we are obligated to pay.
Prices include cleaning fees and organic, locally grown, sumptuous breakfast (if desired) please note: we are not gluten and diary free and breakfast MUST be requested the night before!
Pet Policy: there is an additional charge for dog visitors to be paid to us, on arrival. $20. Per night, 1 dog/ $25. Per night for 2 dogs. You may not leave your pets here unattended (we have tried that, and they get very scared and lonely!) we are not a kennel. But your pets are definitely welcome! Please bring dog bedding or doggie blanket, (NO DOGS on BED, please, not even the cute little ones, cause they shed too!). Cleaning hairs off the bed is a drag. Be respectful. we will provide a doggie blanket for an additional $5. fee, if needed)
Location: 1 block from Crush, a charming European restaurant/wine bar serving 30 different wines, panini, and their sister restaurant, Harvest serving Sunday brunch and marvelous creme brûlée! Locally made ice cream and cones right across the street and open late! Wildflowers Vegetarian restaurant for gluten free diets. Bitter Sweet offers fresh, homemade meat pies daily. And 2 healthy grocery Delis with soup bar and breakfast and lunch buffet, just two blocks away. Pho Hoang Vietnamese offers the most delicious coconut shrimp and great bubble tea. Renata's French Creperie, plan to stand in line weekend mornings (and well worth the wait!), Brio cafe & French bakery and weekend dinners (serving Blue Bottle coffee and out of this world pastry), Masaki Mongolian Grill, Tomo's excellent Japanese sushi, Rita's Mexican Cusine, Los Bagels lox and cream cheese everyday, Thai restaurant (with fabulous satay), great thin slice pizza from Live From New York and the list goes on and on! Arcata Theater Lounge serving dinner with their movies, events and live comedy shows, Minor theater, Richards Goat cocktail lounge, book stores, clothing stores, gift shops, outdoor stores, three grocery stores with deli's, fresh soups and salad bar, and Saturday Farmers Market with live bands. And The Finnish Hot Tubs and Sauna, surrounding a private lake, with European coffee house, hearty soups and always a cozy fire in the fireplace, just 5 blocks away! But be sure to reserve a day in advance, they are always sold out. open noon till midnight everyday.
If you are coming to Arcata, we are about as centrally located as you can get!
The easiest way in is through the main front door. You can bang the Tibetan gong, next to the front door, or we will give you a house key, which ever you prefer (I'd probably take the key) The entrance way and journey through the house to your room, is an adventure in itself! You will probably want to take pictures just getting to your room! The house is packed and cluttered beyond belief, but your room is spacious, uncluttered and relaxing
The upstairs is almost like a separate apartment. The space affords guests total privacy; with a private bathroom & shower, flatscreen cable TV, refrigerator, skylight, and deck. You can lose yourself up there. It's like a little nest in heaven. Talk to me or not, I won't be offended. Guests are welcome to use our living room space, wi-fi downstairs, dining area and kitchen. Smokers can use either of two outside decks, with seating. We have a large back yard and dogs, goats and llamas are welcome.
We have a sheepdog (Dharma) and 2 cats (Dorje, Dolma) but they don't go upstairs, ever! Hang out or don't, whatever, I'm always busy anyway, and spend most of my time in the workshop.
I am also happy to make you breakfast of bagels and cream cheese, OJ, coffee, etc. But I MUST know the night before that you want to have breakfast here, so I can get it together. To avoid any unnecessary confusion, You MUST tell me the night before if you WANT breakfast, and at WHAT time. Most guests opt for a leisure morning of taking a stroll to the Plaza for a 'full Arcata experience' and enjoying one of our many great breakfast spots and cafes (we have many!) just a couple short blocks away. Directly across the street is T's restaurant and Los Bagels. Your preference. It's a tough call, because Renatas amazing Creperie is only two blocks away as is Brio Cafe & French Bakery that offers outdoor seating for people watching on the square (or if you are traveling with dogs); there is also Big Blue, The Alibi and Golden Harvest, all a couple blocks away; and you will feel the 'pulse' of Arcata itself, when you have breakfast on the Plaza, in our tiny town.
Bagel Cafe across the street, natural local delicious ice cream shop, Mexican food next to that, pizza on the corner, music store, hardware store across the street, winery, European Paninni restaurants with 30 different wines (great crime brûlée!) about four doors down, juice bar, yoga center, Humboldt Brews local beer(and full menu) and live entertainment, and 4 more restaurants, all a block away! 2 blocks to the movies, Arcata Theater Lounge, Historic Minor Theatre, bookstores, shopping, clothes, gifts. Vietnamese, Japanese, Mongolian, Mexican, Thai, Vegetarian, Indian, Chinese, French Creperie restaurants, French Bakery....all within a few blocks!
You can walk to absolutely everything from our house (although our house can be quite absorbing, I sometimes don't want to leave!) We are right downtown! Just a few blocks to HSU campus. We can offer you a map of 25 places to visit, sightsee and hike all within an hour and a half from here, such as Jedediah Smith National Redwoods, Fern Canyon, Trinidad Head, Big Lagoon and lots more., plus beautiful local trails just blocks away from our front door!
Our house is a mosaic art house. We do get visitors, students for our workshop, & customers. Our home is unique. cozy, cluttered and inviting, as seen on HGTV in Offbeat America and Listed in 101 Things To Do in Humboldt County. My daughters' small, downstairs room is used mainly for our out of town visiting mosaic students, (but we will make that room available for additional guests, if needed). Guest AccessYou have a refrigerator in your room. However, you are mor than welcome to use the downstairs kitchen if you want to cook your own meals. There are two outdoor decks with chairs and tables for smoking. You will enter through the main house, and a key is provided if you'd like one, but our door is usually open Interaction with GuestsWe have a mosaic store and workshop on the premises, so there might be the occasional customer or student popping by. We are often out in the workshop making mosaics, but are around and happy to answer any questions or give tips on restaurants, shopping and general locale. The NeighborhoodI don't mean to be redundant, but as I stated earlier, we are right downtown, just a couple blocks from an ice cream parlor, bagels, restaurants galore, cocktail lounges, wine bars, meat pies and cider, movie theater and shopping plus two large markets offering lots of organics, full take out (or eat there) delis, sandwiches, sushi bar, soups, fruit bar and hot breakfast and lunch buffet.. Minutes to the redwoods, beaches and parks.
Our neighborhood is walkable and safe. Getting AroundIt is easy to just park your car here and walk. Feel free to park in the driveway when it is unoccupied (first come, first serve). But the street parking is quite safe and easy as well (that is where I usually park). Other Things to NoteIf you have extra guests in your party, a second room can be made available that sleeps two comfortably, at a charge of $50.00 paid on arrival.
