The Space(Please contact me if you are interested in reserving the cottage for CSU, Chico 2017 graduation.)
The Cottage By the Creek isn’t just an alternative to a hotel/motel, but rather a truly wonderful experience when you visit our lovely town of Chico.
I decided to rent the cottage as a bed and kitchen property when my mother left her and my father’s home to move to the medical center where my father was suddenly a permanent resident due to multiple strokes. Many of their furnishings were too beautiful to part with, but too large for her new, one-bedroom apartment, so she shipped them to Chico in hopes that I could use them myself, or sell them for her. Well, selling her pieces was not an option in this economy, and there was no room at the main house in which to store them. While looking for cheap storage alternatives for her many things, the long-term renter in the cottage gave notice. Suddenly, there was my solution...furnish the cottage and make it available to those adventurous travelers seeking a different kind of experience.
Comfortable and cute, the cottage comes fully furnished: kitchen with Dansk dishes, silverware, cutting knives, Kitchen Aid Mixer, Cuisinart, blender, coffee maker, Keurig style also available, pots, pans, mixing bowls...gas stove; whatever you may need, it should be there. Extra rolls of paper towels and new sponges are provided as are any cleaning supplies you may need. Dish soap and liquid hand soap are also stocked.
The wall unit is both air conditioning and heat and can be operated via remote control. There is a ceiling fan in the living room and bedroom plus portable fans for additional air circulation in the summer time.
Handmade quilts by my mother grace the bed and sofa. Soaps, towels, razors, hand lotion, puzzle books and pencils are stashed in the bathroom along with extra t.p. and Kleenex.
There is also a stacked washer/dryer with laundry soap provided, built-in ironing board (I know, who irons?), iron, spray starch, queen sized bed (additional inflatable bed)… dog treats. I provide snacks, drinks, bread, eggs, and seasonal fruit upon your arrival, and am also happy to pick up specific items you may want. There is also coffee, tea, and coca, mix for hot drinks.
The T.V. is set up for local channels, Netflix (basic subscription) and Hulu plus. There is also a DVD and VCR player if you care to bring your own tapes. The apple box for the Netflix/Hulu options has the HDMI cord, which you can plug into your laptop if you want to stream from that. And, yes, that would mean there is WIFI! I know I can’t live without my computer, and I wouldn’t expect you to live without yours either! There is also a pretty nice stereo in the living room with CD, cassette and AM/FM. I didn’t think the CD part worked, but one of the guests said it did… I keep forgetting to test it… so it might. But the FM/cassette is great for sure!
There are two bicycles with locks and helmets (I usually use one during nice weather to commute to work with), tennis courts (rather new and only a short 10 minute walk or 3-minute bike ride away), outdoor dining with furnishings, water feature right outside your door for a relaxing atmosphere and a place for your dog to cool his/her feet. Outdoor kitchen (BBQ), mini hot tub, and pool (lounge chairs and towels provided). The area is well-lit at night, and there are tiki torches you can also light if there is little to no breeze.
Your large covered deck looks out onto the digging grounds for my dachshunds. My hope is that someday they will actually catch a gopher! The garden is also here and guests may helps themselves to whatever is ripe.
Competing for your attention will be Cooper, Mem (short for Agamemnon), and Obi-Wan. They are particularly fond of the treats in the cottage. Feed them, they’re yours! Doesn’t work with Bean – my oldest - he’s all about the ball – but if you throw his ball in the pool on a hot day - that will be treat-like enough!
If you are bringing a dog, we will work out a system to have yours out and mine in and visa versa. This works well, and during the week mine are used to their outdoor kennel which is where they stay. They do not need access to the yard during the day. If you leave your dog in the cottage while you are away, please crate your dog. Also, Chico has fleas, so make sure your dog has been treated for fleas before arrival. If you forget, I have extra - please notify me and we will get him/her treated.
The heart of Chico is our downtown and it is a mere 5 minutes drive from the Cottage (exactly one-mile). Chico State is also very close and is easier to visit by foot or by bike. The area where I live fronts Big Chico Creek and is a haven for walking, jogging, and biking.
With the addition of instant booking the check-in and check-out times are not always flexible. If no one is scheduled to check in the cottage the day you leave, then you can leave as late as you like, however, if someone is coming in, then check out will be 11 a.m., however, you can store your belongings in the main house for as long as you like.
No maid service unless prearranged.
So there you have it… not a cheap alternative to a motel/hotel, but a comparable one, with way more amenities… and the chance to experience Chico as if you lived here! I work Mon-Fri, so the backyard (pool) is completely yours all day.
Thank you for taking the time to read this rather lengthy description… I look forward to meeting you… Guest AccessPool, BBQ, back yard, garden area Interaction with GuestsAs much or as little as they like. The dogs especially enjoy our cottage people once introduced by me! The NeighborhoodBidwell Ave borders Big Chico Creek and has huge trees all along the way. It's a quiet area, yet situated just behind Chico State and is exactly one mile to town. Other Things to NoteThere is a large Oak tree dead center in the driveway. There is plenty of room on each side to come and go, but you do need to be careful.
