The SpaceThis is a RUSTIC style 1700 square foot cabin, about 7 minutes from highway 80, where you can spend quality time with your family and friends. Our remote location is by design. (We only accept non nicotine users. Please acknowledge this in your inquiry! No smoking or vaping!) We have done everything we can to represent this property accurately. If you read the WHOLE listing, it should give you a clear picture. We get thst we write more than most. Our two plus bedroom home, is on 3.76 oak covered acres, 1/4 mile off the main road! Both the house and the garden are always improving! (right now we are focused on the garden!) Jamie is obsessed with the gardens! Inside, we have a moderately open floor plan and a very relaxed RUSTIC country feel. Did we say RUSTIC? Basic use includes the GUEST bedroom and the rest of the whole house. There is a Master bedroom, which we can discuss sharing, and an enclosed porch which can also sleep two. We prefer you not sleep in our Master bedroom, unless your group includes two couples. It has no closet. A large arch opens from the great room, to what is legally but not practically, a third bedroom. We use it as a library instead. We have a variety of games, books, movies and music, to foster a relaxing atmosphere. We finally caved and got wifi! Our cabin is simply and comfortably furnished. We just recently added a love seat and couch combination. The library has a couch as well, and that one is not a bad place to crash if an extra bed is needed, (but please make up with sheets from the hall closet!) The living room couches are not very good for sleeping on at all. The rugs throughout the home are a variety of genuine Persian, contemporary, machine-made but Persian style, and fur (why we can't have animals). All rugs are on painted wood flooring, nothing fancy. We have an order in for new flooring, but still need 400 square feet more to get started! The enclosed porch, our Winter Garden, is usable as a sleeping area, to assist in accommodating a larger party, but it doesn't have a closet or drawers. There are two twin beds on the porch, a day bed and a trundle underneath. Both have memory foam pads over mattresses. A bison rug* adds to our cabin's atmosphere on the porch floor. There is neither heat nor a/c on the enclosed porch but leaving the french doors open keeps the room quite comfortable. There really is nowhere to store clothes though, it's just a sleeping area. Share OUR Master bedroom, if you have more than 2 adults in your group and you prefer not to use the porch. It is only available upon request, with advance planning and perhaps ADDITIONAL COST. The master bath is unfortunately not in working order, and is last on our list of cabin plans. We can NOT offer the master bath due to tenant damage, and we keep it locked with a key lock to avoid confusion. Cook in the large full kitchen (with a gas range including oven), if you prefer to eat in. Basic spices and many kitchen supplies are available to you. Please do not eat food from our freezer or consume our alcohol. Barbecue on our charcoal grill, rather than gas, - it creates juicier, more flavorful food than the gas grill we have at our other home. It only takes a very few minutes to fire it up with our coal tower, (no chemicals needed!) and we have plenty of mesquite charcoal available for your use, plus paper to start it with. It is NOT a wood burning fire pit though, as you will see in the pictures. We stay in our "Cabinette", a secondary building, if our presence overlaps with yours. If you wish, Jerry might include you in whatever meals we have, but do plan to provide and prepare your own food. (Jerry is a fab cook!!!) If Jerry cooks for you, it will be done in the main house. The cabinette kitchen is not really adequate for family style meals. Dine either in the separate dining room or large kitchen nook. We have seating for up to ten, so other guests can join you, with our pre-knowledge and agreement. Wood is our primary heat source during the winter. A wood burning stove is located in the great room, providing cozy and romantic winter warmth. There is furnace heat as well, as a back-up. We have great air conditioning for the summer months. However, we feel safe opening the windows at night and getting fresh air during the summer months, and seldom run the a/c ourselves. EIGHT Gardens, with an extraordinarily long growing season, which we are working to restore to their former glory (after being a rental for a few years) surround us on three sides, as well as above the house on the eastern hill and behind the back yard. The deck is on two sides of the western side of the house. Only one garden is fully restored of the eight. Jamie just planted 365 bulbs last fall and they are starting to bloom! The hot tub is awesome and is located off the library. MOST of the time it is ready for use, but it is NOT GUARANTEED as part of the amenities. Consider it a bonus. Gentle slopes allow for easy walking around the yard and grounds. Our chicken coop stands empty, an enclosed vegetable garden and green house, will over time bring our home back to its original glory. There are berries and grapes growing wild. Help yourself! Chains are almost never required, yet we are close to serious snow in the winter, where they will be. We do get a few dustings of our own snow at the ranch, which we call "postcard snow". Our driveway, (a quarter mile long!) comes off the main road which leads right to the Bear River! *the bison was humanely put down by a family member and all of the meat consumed, by our extended family. Guest AccessNO Animals please!!! We offer "access" to our entire property, except the locked Master bath/closet combo, the "Cabinette" and the Tuff shed in the back yard. Use of the Master bedroom is an ADD ON, not guaranteed to be included. We generally do not include access to our garage or enclosed porch, unless you need the beds (porch only). Garage access is for guests staying more than one week. You may enjoy walking the entire property. Ask us for the boundaries. Interaction with GuestsWe will most likely not be present most of the time, and you would want to make sure you have both our cell phone numbers stored in your phone before you leave your home. If we are on site, in the Cabinette, you may see us on or about the property. We will ask permission before accessing the house. We may ask for access to garage or enclosed porch. We will try to plan not to though if they are planned to be . We can provide you breakfast, when we are present, if you like. IF you are here while you conduct a house hunt, Jamie is a REALTOR® with RE/Max Gold. OTHER Professional business services available: ~ ~Real Estate Loan Signing ~General Notarization The NeighborhoodCOLFAX is a town of great significance, in the very important Californian "Gold Country" of the Sierra Foothills. Colfax is roughly equidistant between Sacramento and Truckee (40 to 60 minutes). We are about 25 minutes from Grass Valley and Nevada City via 174 and about 20 minutes or 15 miles above Auburn, to Rollins Lake or the American River. Each of the towns mentioned has a great deal of their own history. OUT AND ABOUT: PANNING FOR GOLD: Bear River is right down the road from our home, just a few miles outside of Colfax. Bear River is famous as a still productive location for the hand panning of gold! All you need is a gold pan, something to sit on, and a container in which to store your collected gold! When you get tired or hot you can just swim or tube in the icy waters to cool off! RAFTING: The American River is across Highway 80 to the east and has great water activities. "The Colfax-Iowa Hill Bridge to Ponderosa Way Bridge run is the most popular section to run and has been a favorite for California rafters and kayakers since the mid seventies. This 9.5 mile run contains many steep drops and boulder slaloms, providing some of the best whitewater rafting of the 3 forks of the American river." Excerpt from the "North Fork" tab of the American River rafting website. KAYAKING: Either river, or lake, will provide hours of sun and fun. SKIING: is world class. Closest is Sugar Bowl, with Boreal nearby. Northstar, Squaw, Alpine Meadows, and Incline, are all within about an hour. Boreal and Incline are best for less experienced skiers. Northstar is great for the average to well above average skier (free lessons for level 6+). Serious double black skiers will skip them and go to Squaw, Alpine or Sugar Bowl. FISHING: Rollins Lake is the Bear River's premier rainbow and brown fishery, according to the AppealDemocrat, and fishing can vary dramatically according to the season. Stampede/Bocca Reservoir (farther up the highway, just past Truckee) is one of the leading kokanee salmon fishing lakes in the West. Anglers will also find plenty of brown, mackinaw, and rainbow trout. Fly fishing is popular at the lake, according to CaliforniaGreatLakes. CELEBRATING: Downtown Colfax offers old town celebrations and a family feeling you don't get in larger communities. We are home to the Fire and Iron Festival, (with a little burner feel) and a fabulous July 3rd Celebration among many others! ARTS: The Colfax Theater is state of the art both in projection and sound. They will be hosting movies, live theater as well as musicians, plus they boast the largest dance floor in northern California. EATERIES: The food is great at most every spot we have tried. Sandwiches from the grocery store are FANTASTIC. The pizza by the market in town is among the best we have ever had in the traditional style. Pizzaiolo is fantastic for a lighter oven fired style. You will love Dine and Dash, but you will stay to relax! We just got a Beach Hut Deli. SHOPPING: Quaint stores dot the main street in town, with locally produced gifts and art. Grass Valley and Nevada City have awesome shopping as well, if you like to spend your days poking around historic towns (we do!) Auburn is about 20 minutes away, with a greater variety of businesses, and services along with a historical downtown area. HIKING: According to MVTrails, "The Stevens Trail is one of the most scenic and accessible trails in our area. Originally built as a toll road for pack mules between Colfax and the gold fields of Iowa Hill, it slopes gently downhill for about 3.6 miles to the confluence of Secret Ravine and the North Fork of the American River. It offers breathtaking views of this designated "Wild and Scenic" section of the river canyon." TRAIN: There are trains in and out of Colfax, and Jamie just took her first trip. Great for a day trip! Food and alcohol on board! You can go either towards Oakland or Reno. ACTIVITIES IN and ON the PROPERTY: GAMES: There are games, and playing cards, plus a new sound system for your rented movies and TV series. We have about 30 movies. Streaming movies is possible but we don't do it ourselves. WALK: Our oak covered hills take a while to walk, featuring deer, turkey, and fox, cutting through the property. RELAX as you sip your coffee in the early morning or enjoy a glass of wine on the deck in the evening. barely seeing evidence the nearest neighbor in any direction! Keep an eye out for those deer and other wildlife! We have rarely seen skunk and racoon, but they are there. BIRDWATCH: SierraFoothillsAudubon lists dozens of birds that you can watch from our deck, or while hiking. There are wild grapes, if you are ambitious and blueberries if you are fast! WE have wifi, but if you need to print, the library offers printing for 15 cents a page. Getting AroundWE would not recommend all guests arriving in Colfax by train. There is no public transportation from the train. No Uber, No taxi. It's a 2.1 mile walk to our home. Plan to have at least one person arriving by car! WE don't recommend our place to those looking for much nightlife activity. We are remote by design. The SpaceLocated at the end of a 1/2 mile gravel driveway, there is no traffic and ample areas for peaceful rural walks. Total tranquility with easy access to Grass Valley (the property is located within the Grass Valley zip code). The space is decorated with the the owners collection of ethnic objects of art. The guest room has a queen size bed and walk in closet as well as a dresser and nightstands. There are windows on two sides with beautiful forest views. There is a T.V. with DVD player and a collection of movies to watch in the room. There is no television programming in the room, but guests are free to watch satellite T.V. in the family room. The entire home is heated in the winter by propane heat, but there is also a fireplace in the living room that I keep burning through the colder months. There is central air conditioning when necessary in the summer months, but it is generally not needed since the elevation and large shade trees surrounding the house keep it fairly cool. Guest AccessGuests are welcome to use the kitchen, dining, and living rooms. Interaction with GuestsAs the owner, I am happy to interact with the guests while also respecting their wishes for some degree of privacy. Having traveled all over the world and read widely, I am happy to spend time chatting and sharing stories if my guests are interested. The NeighborhoodThe area is rural and peaceful. Access is from a one mile long road that dead ends at an all year round creek, so the valley is very private with only a few homes. Then there is a half mile long gravel driveway to the house. It is a great combination of feeling remote, while enjoying all the comforts and amenities of home and also only a fifteen minute drive to Grass Valley with all of its shops and restaurants. The area is a mixed forest with large oaks and also many pine, fir, and cedar tress. For winter guests, the elevation is about 1900 feet which is generally below any snowfalls. The ski areas are about an hour drive away. Getting AroundThis is a rural area, and there is no nearby public transportation. There is free parking at the house. Other Things to NoteI have no pets and do not accept any guests who have pets, so there is no issue with allergies or pet smells. Within reason, I will bend over backwards to do whatever I can to make my guests feel at home. There is Wi-Fi internet, but it is a satellite connection with bandwidth limits; so there can be no streaming of movies, watching you tube, or downloading huge files. Unlimited emailing and web surfing is no problem at all. The guest room is limited to two people , but I have a single bed in my home office that can take a third person for an additional $20 per night.

Grass Valley California's unique stores, hotels, bed & breakfast inns, wine tasting rooms, art galleries, world-class restaurants, entertainment and real estate. Nestled in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Foothills, Grass Valley, California is truly a postcard image. Bathed in a wondrous mix of cedar, pine, and an assortment of deciduous trees that burst forth a multitude of Fall colors as the cooler temperatures arrive, this circa 1800 Gold Rush era town offers a window into the past while providing the best the present has to offer. In addition to being an excellent place to shop and dine, downtown Grass Valley, California is also the cultural center of Nevada County. With its new Center for the Arts that regularly features popular music & theatrical venues, five wine-tasting rooms and the recently renovated Del Oro Theatre, there are always plenty of things to do in Grass Valley Nevada City The gold rush may have come and gone, but Nevada City still serves as a beacon for wanderlust souls looking for a richer life. Unlike the Eureka days of the 1800s when a miner's life was full of grit and backbreaking work, today's residents lead a life abundant with creativity and spirit, which is palpable throughout the downtown galleries and coffee shops. Events: Film festivals, artisan fairs,Mardi Gras celebrations, concerts in the park and Victorian Christmas gatherings showcase Nevada City's true colors. And while an artistic thread runs through the community, a devout population of mountain bikers, fisherman, hikers, kayakers, and skiers also call this Sierra Nevada playground home. Next to gold, biking may be the area's second oldest attraction. Locals have been celebrating the activity for more than 50 years with the Nevada City Bicycle Classic. The event draws cyclists from across the U.S. and is the largest and oldest bike race on the West Coast. In addition to die-hard local riders, the classic attracts the nation's top cyclists and several thousand spectators every June. The historic downtown corridor doesn't look much different than it did 100 years ago, though instead of just the basic necessities and toe-curling whiskey, visitors can treat themselves to handmade ice cream at Treats, the Nevada City Chocolate Shoppe, a whimsical treasure from the Tanglewood Forest, and even whacky gag gifts at the Gray Goose. Fine teas, toys, beads, books, folk art, fur hats, and fine fashion can also be found among the eclectic mix of shops and galleries. Dining options seem almost paradoxical against the area's wild west Americana architecture. Sushi, Thai, Italian, Mexican, Chinese, organic, fondue, and escargot are all available within the blocks that make up an area, including the famed National Hotel, that is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
