Top reasons people stay here (and come back):
1.) Best view of Santa Cruz Mountains ever, all around, everywhere you look.
2.) Have you ever wanted to know what its like to be a bird and float high on the tree limbs? Get up at sunrise and take a dip in the hot-tub that sits near the cliff. As you float in the water and gaze straight ahead, you are eye level with limbs on 300 year old pine trees filled with acorn woodpeckers, allen hummingbirds, and robins, all fluttering 100 feet off the ground.
2.) My obsession with birds has lead to many feeders, and lots of finches, turkeys, hummingbirds, and even a hawks nest. You cannot sit outside and not see a bird at any given time. Fights among the territorial hummingbirds, frisky finches flapping about and hundreds of beautiful bird calls will be constant entertainment. (Nobody, I mean nobody, has ever chosen to watch tv when the birds are out).
3.) 90% of Santa Cruz hotels are pretty aged and expensive and in undesirable areas of town. My house is private and has a great vibe about it.
4.) There is a huge bocce court in the back yard, we have a nice pool table, and sometimes we have a ping pong table out. This bocce court is lit at night and an exciting way to enjoy a starry night. There is plenty to be entertained.
5.) There is a million things to do within a few miles. You will be close to beaches! We can point out some beaches that are much more quiet and scenic if the Boardwalk Beach is not your thing. Zip lines in the redwoods at Mount Hermon, many parks with hiking, restaurants, Loch Lomond, wine tasting, horseback riding, restaurants, antique train rides through the mountains, the world's most adorable garden store, a museum focusing on local history, a museum focusing on Bigfoot, the mystery spot, antique shops, and much more. Born and raised here, I can give you guidance of cool stuff to see and do- Santa Cruz is so much more then a Boardwalk (although I do love a good roller coaster)!
6.) There is about 10 places on the property to sit and read a book or magazines. Have you ever read a book without any noise? Take time to enjoy the solitude on the hill.
7.) If you like blooms, you'll like it here. It's a labor of love, as it is not easy (turns out deer, gophers, certain birds, turkeys, squirrels, chipmunks, etc love them as much as I do!) Word to wise: don't get me started on the topic, I can bore you with my "look at this flower" tour! But in all seriousness, there are some really awesome plants that I've found at local nurseries. Winter is not bloom spectacular- its too chilly at night. But the forest is always gorgeous and the views never rest.
8.) My veggie garden is cray. Seriously. I produce the veggies for a local restaurant and I just love tinkering in the yard. I have a full and sustainable ecosystem that I can share with you if you like those things.
9.) I love wine. Borderline oenophile and I am a (very) amateur winemaker. I have been to nearly every winery in the SLV mountains and county of Santa Cruz. Name a grape and I will suggest a winery (FYI, Pinots and Chardonnay in Santa Cruz Mountains blows the socks off Napa at a fraction of the price)!
10.) Many places in Santa Cruz Mountains are "rustic" or "charming". This is code for crusty and pretty antiquated. Our space is very well maintained and clean- like you would find in a really nice BnB. We hope you find this stay to be an experience and not just a "room".
11.) We have some very unique trees and history on this 20+ acre property. I have the largest redwood tree in Ben Lomond. This whole area, including this land, was logged in the mid 1800s. Without any regard for conservation, this whole area was clear-cut. Trees that were a thousand years old were chopped down via hand tools to build San Francisco and other towns. My tree was spared. It's height was cut short by being hit by lighting, so it was not worth the effort of cutting down. Today, the base of this tree is enormous and it is almost impossible to tell it was hit (but you will notice if you look from the driveway). Further, in the late 60's, the property was purchased by a bunch of hippies to start a nursery while they lived in tents (#mydream). They ran pipes via a year-round spring, and raised various types of plants they sold. Sometimes when I am cutting down weeds in different parts of the hill, I will find there old pipes protruding from the ground (which break my weed eater). But I don't get mad, because they also left some interesting plants. Throughout the year, some very stunning plants, bulbs, plants, shrubs and tress give some cool blooms. These are not indigenous plants. Because they are cared for by nature, some times they only come up once every three or four years, unlike my flowers that are babied and bloom continuously.
12.) We are working on an orchard. So far we have a couple peaches, apricots (my favorite variety that my grandparents grew), apple, lemon, pomegranates, blood orange, mandarin, nectarine, plum, lime, pluot, grapefruit... and adding! In a beautiful spot on the hill, complete with a view.
There are two rooms listed on Airbnb, check out the other room on my profile! If this room is booked for the time you wanted, check the other listing, as it is less often booked (the other listing has a bigger bed for tall folks!).
This is for booking the bedroom with the teapots and the white bed. The view is really spectacular, you can wake up to see downtown Felton and deer, and fall asleep with the distant city lights of Scotts Valley.
The rooms we host in are the ones with the pinball machine, and the one with the pots on a shelf on the wall (see my other listing for the whole house or the pinball room).
15 minutes from UCSC. 20 minutes from Beach. 10 minutes from Henry Cowell State Park. Feel like your a thousand miles from anyone. This house is situated high on a hill, no neighbors to see. Yet just 5 minutes off highway 9. Outside of the Santa Cruz "fog belt," sunny most months of the year. Join us for Open Studios in October!
Panoramic views of mountains, Scotts Valley, and Felton. 3 bedroom, 3 bath, 2600 sf. Ten acres. Gated driveway, house has state-of-the-art alarm (with outdoor video surveillance), for further ease of mind. Two huge decks for sunning, both with jaw dropping views of the mountains. Idyllic brick front porch with swing. Features full kitchen with nice appliances, two outdoor eating areas, two indoor dining areas, pool table with huge tv to keep up on games, TV with satellite in room, wireless internet. Sprawling lawns, various roses, heirloom tomatoes, even fresh organic eggs from my chickens. Parking is off street, and gated. Pick up some take-out, and sit outside on the decks and enjoy the the outdoor speakers on both decks and all living areas. Hot tub!
White linens. We take a good bed seriously, and you will love this comfy queen bed (so many airbnb hosts overlook bed comfort!). My rule before I put a brand of sheets on a bed for my guests is to sleep on them first! You'll find the same on our bed because we love them! Windows lead to beautiful views. Next to large red bathroom. Dresser to place your things. 42" Hi-Def Sony TV with Dish Hopper service, view of woods, downtown Felton, CA, and Scotts Valley CA. Locally made "dancing pots" by respected artist. Typically I only have one extra room rented, meaning you would have exclusive use of the bath. However, I sometimes have friends or an additional airbnb guest, and in those times the bathroom would be shared.
Many people ask about the bathroom situation. Yes, the bathroom would be shared if there is another guest, but we have three bedrooms and three full and spacious bathrooms. You will not feel bathroom deprived and I promise you will have ample opportunity to put on make-up for hours and hours!
Sadly, we do not have a permit from the county to cook for you, so we cannot offer breakfast/meals. Our home is actually registered with the county to have people stay and for our garden- we have guidelines and rules we must follow or we are subject to being shut down. There are very few people who actually register and I now know why- restrictions, taxes and a lot of paperwork! Lol.
We have video surveillance all over the property, except for the bedrooms and bathrooms. Guest AccessA lot of land, pool table room, dining area, two huge decks, all the things that make our place unique! Interaction with GuestsUp to you. We both work (someone has got to keep those bird feeders filled), so sometimes we do not see guests much. Other times, we have made amazing friendships! The NeighborhoodWe are really in a great spot. It is safe and residential, but we have a very very private 20+ acre lot-gated without a neighbor in sight. Despite the disconnected feeling you enjoy, we are 5 minutes from a fabulous grocery store, restaurants, and 10 minutes to the state park. Getting AroundYou will want a car. Or a horse. We have room to land a chopper too. Other Things to NoteThis place is all about the amenities, views, proximity to local activities and gardens. I know you will feel totally relaxed and at home. Our friends who leave here realize the benefit of staying with us- we are a house that we love to live in. We work to make beautiful, it is not a "rental".
