The SpaceWelcome to our private and modern in-law apartment surrounded by nature and wildlife, where you feel miles away from the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area, while minutes from everywhere!
The apartment consists of a large main room with a kitchen (microwave, full size fridge, dishwasher, granite counter-top, hot plate for cooking, coffee maker, toaster-oven, etc.. …), a breakfast table, a sofa that folds into a bed, a 55” flat screen TV with satellite, (includes German and French (TV5Monde) channels), a large closet and a most eclectic mini-library. We provide coffee, tea and a welcome bottle of wine. The apartment also includes a full bathroom with a bath tub and a shower featuring sliding glass doors. The comfortable separate bedroom sleeping area is a flight of stairs up. The bedroom has a queen bed with a gel memory foam mattress. Sheets and towels are provided, and will go directly to the wash after you depart - don't bother making the bed. The bed is under the window, so that you can stare the stars before falling asleep, during daytime you can just look at the sky. The bedroom also has a 32” TV with satellite and sleeping mode. The apartment has a small balcony where you can sit and enjoy the sunset, sip wine or drink morning coffee. There is a network printer/copier in the closet.
The apartment is naturally cool in summer, and has radiant heated floors for cool days in the winter.
The apartment is very private and quiet. When you look at the pictures: the apartment is the lower part of the house. The middle area between our living quarters and the apartment is the utility area (nobody lives there). The apartment has no common walls or ceilings with the other rooms of the house. We also do not have any next to our house neighbors.
The apartment is also romantic: there are skylights right above the bed (at night, you can see stars in the sky), and the balcony of the apartment is perfect to drink coffee or wine or just sit, relax and enjoy the wildlife. We constantly have deer, wild turkeys and squirrels around the house.
The place is so close and accessible to San Francisco, but a lot less expensive and more manageable. This is a great location to explore the whole bay area: San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Napa wine country, etc; or a place to just stay, relax and un-wind while taking advantage of the beautiful 1.4 mile long hiking/biking/jogging trail just down the street. Guest AccessYou have access to the entire apartment-- everything in the apartment is for your enjoyment and use. You can use elevator to bring yourself and your stuff in. You can park anywhere on the street around the house (there are a lot of availability). Interaction with GuestsWe respect our guest's privacy, but we are also readily available to answer questions, address issues, give advice, etc. If you have any questions we are usually available from 6:00 AM until 9:00 PM. You can always email or text us at any time. We live in a separate house upstairs. The NeighborhoodThe in-law apartment is located in Montclair hills, Oakland, surrounded by natural beauty. We are a 10-15 minute walk via the Shepherd Canyon Trail (a.k.a. Montclair Railroad Trail) or a 3-minutes drive to the heart of Montclair Village, where you will find cafes, restaurants, bookstores, pharmacies, groceries, a park, a Sunday Farmer’s Market: open Sundays (9-1:00). Shepherd Canyon is a popular neighborhood trail, with a healthy mix of dog walkers, parents pushing strollers, cyclists, joggers and folks just out for a stroll. There are also a number of unpaved side trails for further exploring. Cyclists looking for a longer ride can continue on Shepherd Canyon Drive and connect with Skyline Boulevard, a popular on-road cycling route. Getting AroundThe apartment is on a quiet street, yet just a few blocks away from access to the freeway right off Shepherd Canyon Drive. By car, it is about 20 minutes to San Francisco during non-rush hours, 10 minutes to Berkeley and 10 minutes to downtown Oakland.
GPS is great for getting around, but sometimes in the hills it will think you are driving on a road that is actually above or below you. We are located off a main scenic road, and it is fairly straight in and out. Our recommendation is to remember to stay on Shepherd Canyon Rd until you get to Gunn Dr. We are about 1.4 miles from Montclair Village.
If you prefer to take Bay Area Rapid Transit (also known as BART) to San Francisco, we are 10-minutes (5 miles) away from the nearest BART station.
