The SpaceMy home was featured on a tour of "significant but less celebrated architects" for Pasadena Heritage's Craftsman Weekend 2010, and was on the main tour in October 2012. It was also featured in the wint(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) issue of American Bungalow magazine. Perfect for one or two couples or a family, or a family reunion. Three bedrooms, one and a half baths, large living room, formal dining room, office, den, laundry porch. Craftsman furnishings throughout. Large yard with fruit trees and (unheated) pool. Two TVs, dvd player and wifi included. Pasadena is a wonderful city in itself - full of great architecture, restaurants, shopping, museums - and a great base from which to visit the rest of LA. Minutes from shopping, theaters and restaurants in Old Town Pasadena. 3.6 miles from the Rose Bowl and 1.3 miles from the Rose Parade route. 7 miles from Santa Anita racetrack. I have rented my home at new years for the past 5 years, and several times for longer stays to researchers at the Huntington Library . I also do home exchanges all over the world and I rent my mountain cabin for weekend guests; I will do my best to make your stay comfortable and interesting. Available for New Years weekend 2016/2017 (Rose Bowl game and Rose Parade). Contact me for other dates. Three night minimum. Guest AccessNormally I rent the entire house. Occasionally I may offer one bedroom for rent - please inquire. Interaction with GuestsI will either be here to welcome you to the house or I will send instructions to get the key. I will be available by phone and email during your stay, but I will not be on the premises during your visit when you rent the whole house. The NeighborhoodMy home is one block from Pasadena's first historic district, Bungalow Heaven. There is a shopping street with restaurants and stores a five minute walk from my house. The neighborhood is very safe and I have lovely neighbors. Getting AroundYou pretty much need a car in LA - public transportation is not great here but it's getting better all the time. There is a bus that stops right in front of my house and goes to Old Town Pasadena, but it runs only every 45 minutes. This bus also connects to the Gold Line Metro, 1.3 miles away, which will take you to downtown LA and connect to Santa Monica, Hollywood, Long Beach, etc. I provide bikes - a man's, a woman's, and 3 smaller ones for kids. Other Things to NoteThis is a two-story house, so not appropriate for folks with mobility issues.

The SpacePrivate studio apartment space on the south side of a 1909 California bungalow that we Pasadenan's call a "poor man's Green & Green". It has it's own back door and garden space. The bedroom has a queen size bed and a double size futon and a large closet. The apartment's "living room" can be used as the second bedroom and has a queen size futon and a small sofa that folds down for sleeping. Parking off-street on the property for one car is necessary and included in the rental price, due to Pasadena's overnight no-parking 2-6 AM laws. The the cookware and tool stocked kitchen has a gas range stove and oven, refrigerator, microwave, and drop leaf round table for 4. There is a stretchy "security gate" that one can temporarily install in the door between the bedroom and kitchen to help keep curious children from hazards in the kitchen while you cook. Bathroom is small 5x6.5, but the bathtub with shower is 5' long. The 12x12 "living room" accommodates an additional two to three persons with a queen size futon and a small sofa that folds down. Apartment total is 450 sq ft. The garden is a rustic "throw-seed-and-support-the-bees" garden, not a "mow-and blow" manicured yard. We have lettuces, endive, chard and mint instead of a lawn. Blood orange, ponderosa lemon, Richardson orange, lime, fig, apricot, peach, pomegranate and feijoa (guava) trees. Poppaver poppies and sweet peas March-June. Maracuja passion fruit arbors. Iris, nasturtium, sage, strawberries, grapes, tomatillos, basil, Kahili ginger. Guest AccessIf we are not able to be here to greet you when you arrive, there will be a key lock on the door and we will send you instructions for entry. There will always be a neighbor to help you with anything. The private entrance is from the backyard, and your car should be parked there 2 AM - 6 AM, so you should load in at the back door. You may use the apartment's front door with access to the apartment's "living room". You are welcome to watch the neighborhood promenade and share a toast from the river rock porch. The south garden sitting area is all your own. We share the backyard round picnic table. You're free to wander the garden. There is no smoking in the apartment or on the property, as per Pasadena regulations. One must be 25' from any door or window of any other renter or next door neighbor. We suggest a walk on the front sidewalk. Do not bring your cigarette butt back into the house. Throw it in the trash in the driveway before you enter the apartment. If we smell cigarette smoke in the apartment or see butts in the inside apt. trash, we will fine you and take that out of your security deposit. WiFi is available. No TV, no DVD, no cable, no landline. No audio dock for iPods...yet. There is a good laundry 1 block away. We have a men's bike, and woman's bike (both with required lights for night time), a child's size bike, and helmets. The door between our places is bolted from our side. We have outside feral cats. We're not much into pets for your visit...but check with us. We know they are your buddies. Pasadena's water is continually tested and good straight from the tap, but there is a filtered water pitcher for your use. Interaction with GuestsWe're here, and can help as much as needed or as much as you'd like. We tend to go about our business, and let you have your (URL HIDDEN) don't feel neglected if we don't have a mandatory "meet & greet tea time". We have cooked and provided meals before, so let us know if you'd like that additional service. We know a very congenial professional caterer one block away who can work with you for truly memorable service and gourmet meals, so again, let us know and we'll get you in touch. There is a small habachi barbecue, but you'll have to buy the charcoal or wood at the grocery or the dollar store, both a block away. We now have a two burner gas grill. If you use the gas grill, please clean it. If you use it, you must do this, if you want a stellar "cleanliness" review. We have a longtime friend who is a master of Kung Fu and wonderful Shiatsu massage. He can make house calls. Other guests have appreciated this very much. Please let me know when you make a reservation so that I can forward you a telephone and email contact so that you can get calendars and appointments in synch with him. The NeighborhoodThis is one of the oldest residential neighborhood in Pasadena. The Bowen Court is across the street. This was where one would rent a hunting cabin in the 1860's. Various species of parrots make their home year-round in the camphor and palm tree tops. The street is ethnically very diverse, and folks walk up and down the street because grocery and sundry stores are one block in either direction. Thai, Mexican, and Chinese restaurants, a laundry and a liquor store are a block away. Villa Parke and a dry cleaner are 2 blocks. Pasadena's Main Library is 5 blks. 1/2 mile to Pasadena's beautiful and iconic City Hall and the Paseo Colorado (indoor/outdoor mall). Did you catch that we have bikes you may use? Getting Around6 blocks (1/2 mile) from the Metro Gold Line at Lake Street. We can easily pick you up and drop you off there for arrival and departure from town. The Old Town exit off the Gold Line is one stop down the line. Pasadena Arts Bus (east/west bus) is 1/2 block. Los Robles & Lake Street (north/south buses) are one block and 4 blocks respectively. Uber is fantastically responsive. Colorado Blvd. (Rose Parade route & Route 66) is 6 blocks, and another 6 blocks brings you to the heart of Old Town Pasadena. Pasadena's Convention Center is less than a mile. One can take a shuttle from LAX, catch the Westin Pasadena shuttle. The Westin is 4 blocks from us. Other Things to NoteThere are parrots in the neighborhood. ~Occasionally~, they convene in the camphor trees outside the house, about 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM for a 1/2 hour or so. It's quite an exciting scene to see and hear! However, there are ear plugs in the medicine cabinet in case you'd hoped to sleep through it. If you're a fan of Yellow Headed Amazons in particular, or other conures, this is an ideal birdwatching area.

The SpaceThe house has been landmarked as a historical property because of its unique architectural features. It has been used in short films, music videos and was part of the 2013 Pasadena Heritage Home Tour. Guests have use of a fully equipped kitchen as well as the full bathroom found on the same floor as the room. When available, I loan out bikes for casual riding around the city or for regular use to the Huntington Library since I receive many professors here to do research at the Huntington. I make myself available for interaction, but at the same time I allow for the privacy of my guests so the level of interaction is totally dependent on the guests. Pretty peaceful and quiet. The most noise we get is from the freeway because of my proximity to it, but it's nothing unbearable. I am located about 6-7 blocks from the Goldline train station which gets you to downtown Los Angeles in about 20 minutes. The Flyaway shuttle bus costs $7 and takes you to Lax. From downtown you can connect to the other lines giving you access to most parts of the metropolitan area. I do have two wonderful dogs who stay with me and love to interact with the guests, but if you have allergies to dogs, this may not be the best place for you.
