The SpacePortrait Haus is a quirky little get-away located in the Bay Area's secret wine region Anderson Valley, and 30-40 minutes from the Mendocino coast, 15 minutes from the Navarro river and Hendy Woods state park. Our remote writers, artists, and nature enthusiasts retreat is a mere 2.5 hours from San Francisco and close to the few excellent restaurants, river and beaches famed in the area. We are also minutes from world class wine tasting and big Mendocino County events. Located on a ridge top, on a 20 acre Certified Bee Friendly Farm in the heart of Anderson Valley, a swath along the Navarro River in Mendocino County, Portrait Haus is waiting for you. Our property is also home to a homesteading family who love farming, herbs, bees and living a sustainable lifestyle close to nature. We maintain 20 acres of woods, cultivated land and gardens dedicated to our friendly pollinators. The owner is also a Yoga Instructor, Process Coach and Holistic Health Coach, and is available for private instruction and consultation. Please note we are about 3 miles off the main highway on a dirt road. Guest AccessThe cabin and surrounding area. Interaction with GuestsWe are happy to be here for your questions and to chat. We never disturb guests and let them have complete privacy. If you are late to depart we may come to give you a gentle reminder. The NeighborhoodOur rustic neighborhood is quiet and remote. You may see some cars on our dirt road or not. We are so close to wilderness that wild animals make their home here to. Yet just a few miles away there is world class dining and wine tasting, needless to say great walks just out the cabin door. Getting AroundYou will need a vehicle to come to our hide away. Other Things to NoteWe share some of whatever we have growing in our garden with guests. We have winter greens and herbs, Spring salad makings, Summer tomatoes and veggies, and Autumn fruits.

The SpaceLocated on 10 private acres of meadows and redwood forest a short drive off the highway, the land is vibrant with deer and birds large and small. This is a peaceful place to relax and recharge. Wine tasting is close by at Anderson Valley's oldest family-owned wineries specializing in Pinot Noir, Alsace varietals, and the best sparkling wines produced in the US. A lovely short drive through the redwoods brings you to the bluffs and beaches of the Mendocino Coast. Nearby Hendy Woods State Park has two groves of ancient redwoods and access to the Navarro River as well as miles of trails, some of which are available for bicycles. Generally pleasant climate year round at the Navarro end of Anderson Valley with coastal breezes without much fog. Arts and crafts studios and shops nearby. A wide variety of organic food is available locally in season, and a weekend Farmer's Market has everything from olive oil to hand blown glass beads, not to mention the freshest fruits and vegetables. The cabin is clean, airy, and recently remodeled with a queen bed in the loft and a newly tiled bathroom. The loft is accessed by safe and sturdy ladder-like stairs which could be an issue for those with mobility challenges. The loft windows look out on the redwoods. It's like sleeping in a tree house--but much more comfy! A pleasant place to stay any time of the year. The sunny front deck overlooks a meadow and the back balcony is a shady place to catch the afternoon breezes. The second bed, which is in the living area, is a chair that pulls out to a comfortable platform single bed. A futon for the floor is available, but it's a bit crowded with four people. There is visual separation between the loft and the main room but no door. Convenient to SF Bay Area, about 2.5 hours from Golden Gate Bridge. Guest AccessIt will be your place to enjoy. I live across the highway. Interaction with GuestsI am generally available if you need anything and will let you know if I am not. The NeighborhoodVery quiet neighborhood. Getting AroundThere is no public transportation in Anderson Valley. Accessing the cabin is easy in any car, and two rocked parking spaces are provided. Other Things to NotePlease note the stairs to the loft could be challenging for those with mobility issues. There is neither TV nor internet. Cell coverage is OK but not great. Sorry, but I cannot accommodate pets.

The SpaceWhile other local listings offer small rooms, we offer a large house on several acres for similar pricing. And we've recently made all kinds of new upgrades listed below. Amazing vistas of the valley. Majestic old growth redwood forest on our property. We are nestled right between the oldest vineyard in the valley (Husch) and the newest (Angel Camp).

My place is close to Gowan's Apple Farm, Hendy Woods, Toulouse Winery, Libby's Mexican Restaurant (our favorite) and Lemon's Market. You’ll love my place because of the beautiful views, the quiet and solitude while on the property yet it's close to wine tasting, a grocery store, good restaurants, a swim hole, and hiking and only a 40 minute drive from the Mendocino Coast.. My place is good for couples, families (with kids), and big groups.

The SpaceNo detail has been overlook in The Hexagon. It has been designed so that you feel like you are floating in nature, even when you are inside, fireside and cozy. Four of the six sides of this structure have windows, so wherever you look you see views and nature. As you relax in bed, read on the leather armchair, enjoy an outdoor shower or soak in the two person exterior tub, you may see deer, wild turkey, rabbit, quail, hawk, eagle, chickadee and more. The Hexagon feels remarkable roomy because of its vaulted ceiling and plentiful light. It is cozy because of its working fireplace, defined by a gorgeous Heath Ceramics tiled hearth. The building is sited to be nestled into a grove of Madrone trees for privacy, yet have unobstructed views of the valley below. The defining feature of The Hexagon is the exterior bathroom, which was inspired by the owner's remote safari in Africa. The bathroom is literally one with nature, with a Madrone penetrating the privacy wall and providing support for the shower, as well as felled Madrone branches serving as the railing spindles of the deck. The Hexagon is part of a larger property that the owners have built out as a labor of love and an expression of their creativity over the last 15 years. 200 feet away is a converted Airstream trailer that is also available as an additional guest suite. The Hexagon does not have a kitchen, but we do provide access to a propane BBQ, picnic table, cooler and exterior lounge chairs. It is the perfect spot to get away with a loved one, or alone. It is a great jumping off point for day trips or for the writer looking for a spot to feel inspired. We love it here and how you do too! Guest AccessYou will have access to The Hexagon, a propane BBQ, picnic tables and exterior lounge chairs. You will have complete privacy while on the property. Interaction with GuestsYou will have complete privacy during your stay. We have a caretaker that lives nearby and will be available if you need them. The NeighborhoodThe Hexagon is located in the perfect spot for a truly unique weekend away from it all. You will find yourself perched on a ridge overlooking the vast Anderson Valley. Madrone, Tan Oak and Redwood trees envelop you on the property. Walk in any direction and you feel like you are moving through pristine parkland. A short drive away are award winning vineyards and fabulous restaurants. The hexagon is 15 minutes from some of the most spectacular California coastline and 25 minutes from Mendocino. Within minutes you are at the secret swimming hole of the Navarro river or shopping the local farm stands. Getting AroundThe Hexagon is completely remote yet just off of a private paved road. You will enter the property and quickly park in a gravel courtyard adjacent to your cabin. You can walk the property and the surrounding area for miles of paved private roads, but getting around the valley requires a car. Other Things to NoteThe Hexagon is off the grid and is an escape from our technology world. This is a place for nature lovers, romantics and dreamers. It is a truly unique spot, but intentionally, technology is absent. We provide a bluetooth speaker for music--however there is no wifi. Verizon provides decent cell service, but other carriers are spotty. We have a guest cell phone if your phone isn't providing service in case you need to make calls. The Hexagon is powered by solar and propane. Though you are off grid, you will have regular lights, thermostat controlled heat and and a flushable toilet. Think of yourself on a land yacht for you stay!

Dreaming of a digital detox? Looking for a little get up in your giddy up? Our spacious, handcrafted tower studio offers a unique glimpse into the hippie lifestyle—but with all the modern creature comforts along with easy access to equestrian adventures. Perched atop Greenwood Ridge this tranquil refuge offers stunning forest views & blissful peace. We are also near an ancient redwood forest, cozy coastal towns & world-class wineries of Anderson Valley. So come enjoy this bit of heaven on earth. The Space (completely private): The Dreaming Tower Studio is on the 3rd and 4th floor of the main house (where we live) and is accessible by a private outdoor grapevine lined staircase. Once you breathe in the fresh air and the view at the top the stairs – you’ll take a right into your room. The art-filled main room (3rd floor) is an open studio design with lots of windows, a queen sized bed, dining table and a kitchenette. The kitchen area includes a mini-fridge, 2 burner gas stove, sink, microwave, toaster oven, coffee grinder and marker, utensils, cookware and dinnerware. Also provided is a bottle of my favorite red wine from a local winery, coffee/ tea and essential condiments, including sugar, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. The private full bathroom is accessible by a very short walk OUTSIDE on your covered deck and is equipped with a standing shower (see photos). If you want to get even higher, climb the inside stairs to the 4th floor loft, where you’ll discover an enchanted space with more awe inspiring views and the “Turret Art Gallery & Mini Museum” with changing exhibits for your pleasure. *The location: Since we share the property with Ross Ranch horseback rides can easily be arranged in advance – for either the surrounding redwood forest area or on Manchester beach, a 40 minute drive away. We are also conveniently located between the charming, and often overlooked, coastal town of Elk (our nearest town/30 min drive) and the Anderson Valley tasting rooms (30 min drive). Make a trip to Elk for a great breakfast at Queenie’s Roadhouse café (closed bet Dec 13 and mid Feb), a nice walk on Greenwood Beach and then either head along the coast south to tour the Point Arena Lighthouse (30 min drive) or north to the historic town of Mendocino (30 min drive). Or head to the quaint Anderson Valley for a stroll beneath the giant old-growth redwood trees at Hendy Woods State Park (20 min drive) and an afternoon of wine tasting and bahl gorms (“good food” in Boontling, the almost extinct local language). *Note: We are located in a very rural area surrounded by forestland and the nearest town is Elk (about 30 min drive away). Getting here and around requires driving on windy rural roads and even thought we are only 130 miles north of San Francisco - it will take you at least 3 hours to get here, unless you know the roads and drive like a bat out of hell local... so plan accordingly. Also, getting to our house involves driving less than 1/2 a mile on a well-maintained gravel road - that being said "The Dreaming Tower" may be more suited to the hearty adventurous travelers seeking peace, quiet and natural beauty :) Animals: We are a small working farm; therefore we have to be strict about our no pet policy. It is not that we dislike animals, on the contrary we are already flooded with them – we have resident pets (cats and dogs) and livestock (chickens and horses) that we need to consider. We do apologize for the inconvenience! Guest Access: In addition to your private space, you are welcome to relax on our large deck and enjoy the sunshine. You are also free to walk around the property and visit our gardens and walk the driveway. But my sister's house area is private (we will point that out). Interaction with Guests: We are available to help make your stay a pleasant one and make recommendations on activities, food, hikes, etc. We are open friendly and up for interacting as much or as little as you like. Other: We do allow smoking outside but not in the room. We do have wireless internet but we have a very limited plan (since satellite is the only option here) and are charged heavily for going over - so we ask that guests please don't live stream movies and download large files. Basic use - email, social media, etc. is fine. Thank you in advance.
