Maybe you are an outdoor enthusiast; FISHERMAN, BOATER, SKIER (especially back country), HIKER, BIKER, etc. Maybe you are an ARTIST or WRITER looking for a place to create & for inspiration. Perhaps you are a SEEKER of magic, spiritual peace, or MEDITATION. If you've said "yes" to any of these, then the Ruedi Reservoir/Ruedi Creek area is the place to be. It is a mecca for breath-taking mountain wilderness beauty, wildlife, outdoor activities, as well as peace & quiet! It IS truly a magical place.
The guesthouse is a spacious, but cozy studio apartment with beautiful views & a treehouse-like feel. It's nestled on 6.5 acres of aspen, fir, & spruce trees, with a small running stream nearby, as well as a creek running through another part of the property.
Lie back, unwind, & relax. Enjoy watching the birds fly & greet you on your private deck. In the summer months, enjoy dining "al fresco" at your charming mosaic table on the deck.
Other amenities include: a fully-stocked & newly remodeled full-sized kitchen with a vintage professional gas range; a newly remodeled bathroom & shower with artful mosaic tile work (done by yours truly : ) ); a wonderfully comfortable king-sized bed, & a comfy queen-sized futon, both with high quality linens; big, fluffy bath towels, a charming gas fireplace, which puts out great heat; plenty of clothes hanging space & drawer space, so you can really make yourself at home. LGBT friendly. *MMJ friendly (please enjoy smoking it outside).* Guest Access*4 WHEEL DRIVE is a MUST for access October - May (these tend to be the snowy months)! SNOW TIRES are also MUST! We are in a REMOTE, MOUNTAINOUS AREA! Our road is well-maintained, but there are steep grades, curves, & likely to be snow packed, icy conditions during these months! If you are flying into Colorado, most rental car companies have 4 wheel drive vehicles available for your rental during these winter season months. BE SURE TO REQUEST A 4x4/AWD WITH GOOD CLEARANCE WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR CAR RESERVATION DURING THESE MONTHS. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU DOUBLE CHECK WITH THE RENTAL CAR COMPANY TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU ARE INDEED GETTING A 4x4 & THAT YOU SEE FOR YOURSELF THAT THERE ARE GOOD SNOW TIRES WITH A GOOD TREAD ON THE CAR YOU ARE RENTING (I cannot emphasize this enough)!!! I've had guests get duped by their rental car company, & get saddled with a car that could not handle the conditions, & to top it off, it had bald tires; absolutely ZERO tread! As a result, they slid off the road & got stuck in a ditch twice! It was a situation that was hard on my poor guests, as well as the whole neighborhood. (This is such an important piece, that I've posted this a few places!)
As for the space, guests have access to the 2nd floor guesthouse apartment with its own private deck, which is located above the 3 car garage on the left side of the driveway. Entrance to the guesthouse is located up the stone steps to the right of the garage, & up the stairs to the deck. Guest parking is available straight ahead at the end of the driveway, & next to the garage. At this time, there is no guest parking available in the garage.
While you are a guest here, you are welcome to walk around & enjoy the 6.5 acre property. Interaction with GuestsHere & there, I have events & things to do that will bring me into town during the day or evening, however, when I am available, I'm happy to help in any way that I can. You are welcome to stop by the main house to say hello during your stay, & I also respect if you prefer your privacy. The NeighborhoodWe are in a REMOTE, MOUNTAINOUS WILDERNESS AREA, & are in a small neighborhood of roughly 13 private homes. It is a quiet, peaceful, mountain paradise, completely surrounded by the USFS White River National Forest. **If you are traveling here in the winter months (generally Oct. - May), please make sure you have a 4x4/AWD vehicle!! Please read details about this in "GUEST ACCESS", "OTHER THINGS TO NOTE" & "RULES" sections!** Getting AroundAs mentioned above, there are loads of activities to occupy your time in this area, if you so desire. The Ruedi Reservoir is a 5 mile stretch of water & is only a mile down the road. You can enjoy anything from motor-boating & water skiing, to canoeing, kayaking, & stand-up paddle boarding. This area is also known for its Gold Medal fishing waters, where you can enjoy world class fly fishing 2 miles down the road on the Frying Pan River. The nearby Frying Pan Road is popular for road biking, & is the scenic roadway that takes you to numerous hiking & mountain biking trails, jeep trails, as well as back country skiing. Access trails to 2 of the 10th Mountain Division huts are within a 30 minute drive.
If you are interested in resort skiing or snowboarding, of course, Aspen has some of the best terrain in the world! There are 4 ski/snowboard resorts in the Aspen area, & all are within a 1 hour drive. Aspen Mountain (or Ajax, as the locals call it) is located right in Aspen's downtown area, & has mostly advanced, with expert & some intermediate terrain. Aspen Highlands is about a 10 minute drive southwest of Ajax & is, in my humble opinion, the best of the best in the area. If you like it steep, deep, & challenging, this is the place! Take a short cat ride to hike (or hike it the whole way) the roughly 1 mile trail to Highlands Bowl. Enjoy unbelievable views of the Maroon Bells as you ascend your way to the top, & then blissfully ski/board your way down on epic steep wide open bowl terrain, or glades. For beginners, a short 5 minute drive northwest of Aspen Highlands, is Buttermilk; it's a laid back, cruisy little area that, like the rest of the Aspen area, has amazing views, but offers a low-pressure place to learn or hone your skiing, or riding skills. Lastly, about a 15 minute ride northwest of Buttermilk, is Snowmass. Snowmass has just about everything a skier or rider could want, with a fairly broad range of terrain, from beginner & intermediate, to expert & extreme, as well as some fun board & ski parks to practice your tricks on. Snowmass is another favorite of mine.
THE LOCAL TOWNS
The town of Basalt is the closest & is a 25 minute, scenic drive along the Frying Pan River on Frying Pan Road. When you arrive, you will find a charming little downtown area with some quaint, high quality restaurants & shops. There are also a couple angler's shops, a small market, 2 gas stations, a library, & a post office.
Access to Highway 82 is just on the west side of downtown. It will take you to Aspen on the far south end (& in the summer months over the breathtaking scenic byway, Independence Pass). I believe it goes without saying, that Aspen is the ritz & glitz of the Colorado Western Slope. Big, glamorous homes, as well as high-end shops & boutiques, nice restaurants, & galleries galore. But don't let that scare you, there are some reasonably priced, down-to-earth places to shop & eat, as well. Ask me about some of my favorites!
Going northbound, within about 5 minutes of Basalt, you will find the Willits area & nearby El Jebel, with Whole Foods, City Market, movie theaters, as well as several other shops & restaurants.
The charming town of Carbondale is another 15 - 20 minute drive north on Highway 82; it boasts a thriving artist community (check out the First Friday art walk!), & some great little restaurants & bars--not to mention some of the best thrift store shopping in the Roaring Fork Valley! There's also a beautiful yoga studio in town called True Nature. The design of & the artifacts within the space are just beautiful, & unlike any other studio I've been to. I love the stretch yoga class! This class gives you time to really sink into your poses & free up range of motion.
Lastly, & certainly not least, is Glenwood Springs on the far north end of 82 (about 20 - 25 minutes from Carbondale); hot springs activities abound! Enjoy the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, the historic Yampa Hot Springs Vapor Caves, & the new Iron Mountain Hot Springs pools. [If you're lucky enough to be in the area when Ute Chief, Kenny Frost is leading a sweat lodge ceremony, at the Yampa Hot Springs Vapor Caves, it's a wonderful, spiritual, healing event, not to be missed!] Glenwood also has a large shopping area on the west side of town, if you're in need of the big store conveniences of Lowes, Target, Pet Smart, Bed, Bath & Beyond, & Sports Authority. BTW, in this same big store area, there happens to be a Vitamin Cottage/Natural Grocers, which is my absolute favorite grocery store; absolutely all of their produce is organic & they focus on buying from local vendors.
Some more towns worth mentioning, are along Highway 133, which runs east & west from the north edge of Carbondale. It is the gateway to the Crystal River & North Fork River valleys. The gorgeous & historic towns Red Stone & Marble are within approximately a 40 minute drive west of Carbondale, & if you continue roughly another 50 minutes or so from Marble, & on the west side of McClure Pass, you will find Paonia, & nearby Hotchkiss, small agricultural towns, with big ideas about organic farming. There you will find orchards, vineyards, & small farm stands & markets. Other Things to Note*4 WHEEL DRIVE is a MUST for access October - May (these tend to be the snowy months)! *FYI: there is no cell service up here, & though there is WiFi internet, it's not the best bandwidth. Unfortunately, satellite internet is the only option in this area (the downside of living in paradise). However, you should be able to send & receive emails, & browse the internet. Streaming, or using Facetime/(SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) are not advised.
**ORGANIC, GLUTEN-FREE COOKING: Send me a note if you are interested in having me prepare you BREAKFAST or DINNER. There will be an additional fee for meals, which is not included in the housekeeping fee, or rental rate. Also, please let me know at least 48 hours in advance of your stay, if you'd like any meals prepared (along with which day & meal, as well as any food allergies). You may decide it's worth spending a little extra for a prepared meal here & there, since it's about a 25 minute drive to town--&--I can't think of a restaurant anywhere in the valley that offers a completely organic & gluten-free menu! [Plus, I'm a great cook! : )]
