The SpaceWhat people love: *Lots of room *large outdoor spaces *new kitchens and baths *great for jogging or walking, lots of sidewalks *unique historical property *family environment Things to note: *older home, can be drafty, lots of character *located about 3 miles off the exit, away from downtown in a rustic setting *strongly suggest using a gps *no central air but there are window units in all except the captains room *shared bath The Captains room (this listing and booking) offers 2 built in twin beds. There is also some room for younger ones traveling with parents. This room was the original owners sleeping porch and is full of windows and can be a little drafty but a wonderful room with a view! The room is located in the front of the house. There’s always a space heater in the room if it’s drafty. Built in the early 1900’s Sea Glass is historically unique with 9’ ceilings and listed on the National Historic registry as a Colonial Revival, with baths and the kitchen redone in 2010. All living areas have been updated and completed, however we’re always taking on more projects. Close to the Coast Guard Academy, Casinos, colleges and public transportation. Family friendly with 2 indoor cats and 1 small dog. The home has a unique history and was even a nursing home at one time. At one time, there was a wine cellar in the basement, beautiful gardens in the back, a large gazebo behind the house in the woods and functioning servant’s quarters in the attic. The old owners were such garden enthusiasts that they used cold boxes outside with electricity running to them for early planting. It is a beautiful neighborhood nestled in the heart of historic Quaker Hill. Many of our neighbors will wave to you while you stroll around on wide sidewalks taking in the beautiful turn-of-the-century homes. All bedrooms are on the second floor. We share our home with our rescued pets. Our family consists of myself, husband, and five year old son. Guest AccessThe wrap around porch looks out over a large front yard and to relax after dinner, a hike, antiquing, or the bustle of the casino. There are plenty of places inside and out to read or relax. Feel free to explore the stream past the barn Interaction with GuestsOur family lives on site and are usually around and are happy to give local advice. Other Things to NoteWe live in a rural/rustic area. Down town and the casinos are a straight shot in either direction and about 6-12 minutes away. We're early risers and have a toddler that enforces it. He's well behaved but does make "child noises" :) Coffee, morning munchies and fresh eggs are provided. You are welcome to cook yourself breakfast-if we are around we're happy to pitch in!

The SpaceThe Gilbert Apartments are carved out of a 19th-century Victorian mansion whose common spaces feature original parquet flooring, polished brick fireplaces, wide staircases: the great smell, look, and feel of historic New London. Generous welcoming areas separate the three-to-four apartments per floor, with residents as quiet as they are friendly (seldom encountered by most guests). Paintings, plants, and wooden sculpture line the former parlor and dining spaces and morning sun bathes both these and the wood-trimmed one-bedroom. This unique offering packs in the personality per square foot — perfect fit for a Southern New England weekend getaway! Guest AccessFont and back code-protected entries on first-floor. Second and third-floor common spaces available for reading and fraternizing. Coin-op washer and dryer in basement. Biiiig back yard and sizable front for sunbathing, BBQ, or ball, and great, safe neighborhood for running or walking. Copious on-street parking. Interaction with GuestsMy default is to respect guest privacy, so code and key exchanges are detailed once booked with questions fielded via email/text/AirBnB app. 'Turrets' is accessible at all hours and I or a proxy can be onsite for guest needs. The NeighborhoodConnecticut's bucolic best, New London is exactly halfway between Boston and NYC (100 miles each way). The house is located in the finer part of the former Whaling capital, on a hilltop full of charming Victorians, big lots, and established residents. It is across from the carriage house of another converted mansion, now a tree-lined transitional care facility, and very near Connecticut College, United States Coast Guard Academy, and Arboretum hosting outdoor Shakespeare in the summer. Getting AroundLike most of CT, one needs a car, but highway is immediately accessible. New London is a rail, bus, and ferry hub, and has shuttles leaving regularly for both casinos. Other Things to NoteBikes, skateboards, rollerblades, available for use upon request :D !

Guest AccessWIFI and Off street parking, as well as a private bathroom. Interaction with GuestsWe live in the house as well and work some from home, so we are here a lot of the time. But we are not always available and some guests have stayed without meeting us. We host regularly and love meeting new people. But if for some reason we will not be able to receive you personally, we will make arrangements to leave a key and stay in touch. The NeighborhoodWe are about 2 blocks from the downtown restaurant, nightlife, shopping and arts district and only about 4 blocks from the public transportation hub. The room is on the side of the house away from the street and is quieter. Getting AroundTrain, Ferry and Bus Other Things to NoteThis is an older home, built in 1840. Some folks have trouble with the steep stairs and lack of central air, so I wouldn't recommend it for folks with mobility issues or who can't abide heat in the summer. There is an Air Conditioner in the bedroom, as well as ceiling and standing fans available. The bathroom is mostly private but occasionally shared if we have family/friends in another spare room visiting.

The SpaceNew London is filled with history and the Post Hill District, recognized in the National Registry of Historic Districts, is packed with vintage homes. 48 Vauxhall Strreet is part of this historic district and mentioned in the national registry. The house is spacious and open with high ceilings and lots of windows including an original stained glass window that stands on the main staircase landing. The house is nicely furnished - I think it's pretty but not the least bit stuffy. Just comfortable. Its a great house for entertaining. From searfaring captains' homes to the early industrialists of New London, the Post Hill District was home to New London's finest. Now the Post Hill District is a wonderful family neighborhood and only a short walk to downtown New London and its vibrant arts community and great restaurants. Guest AccessGuests can relax in their rooms, in a second floor library or on a really nice wrap-around porch complete with loads of vintage wicker. Interaction with GuestsI am always available by cell. The NeighborhoodMy neighborhood is one of beautiful vintage homes. I love them and appreciate them. I never get tired of looking at houses from all different eras. As lovely as the houses are, the neighbors are even lovelier - warm and friendly and welcoming. Getting AroundNew London is located on the Thames River and is halfway between New York and Boston. It is a short drive to Essex and the Connecticut River and a shorter drive to Mystic and the Mystic River. And yes, there really is a Mystic Pizza. But there is also the Mystic Acquarium and the Mystic Seaport. But New London has it all. First, it is home to some of the oldest homes in the state, the Hempstead Houses. Really interesting especially if your visit coincides with some of their living history weekends. New London is also home to the Maritime Society that operates the New London Customs House - the oldest customs house in the state. Beautiful and very interesting. New London is also the transportation hub of southeastern Connecticut with an Amtrak stop, bus and taxi service and of course ferries to Fisher's Island, the north shore of Long Island and Block Island. Local public transportation is a little iffy but it's there and you can reach the surrounding towns and the two nearby casinos by bus. Downtown New London has an interesting mix of the performing and visual arts, an extensive array of restaurants from Thai, Sushi, Italian to good old American steaks, burgers, wings and fries. There's a great waterfront park where visitors can walk along the Thames River and take in the local river traffic including the occasional submarine making its way to the New London Submarine Base in Groton.
