The SpaceRomantic and private mountain cabin located just north of historic Dahlonega, on Cane Creek with 25 ft high waterfall, great room w/ massive stone fireplace, screened porch w/ rocking chairs overlooking creek, flagstone terrace within 10 ft of creek and flagstone walkway around cabin, 1950s kitchen with antique side board sink, refrigerator, electric stove, coffee maker, toaster, microwave, 1950s bathroom fixtures including porcelain tub/shower with lots of gas hot water, 90% efficient quiet gas furnace, easy unloading-park 15 ft to front door, located inside a gated facility staffed 24/7, just relax and sit by the fire or take a walk along the scenic mountain trails or take the "Georgia Wine Trail" to the many wineries nearby or enjoy a play or movie at the historic Holly Theater. Dahlonega was the site of the first gold rush in America in 1828 and is the home of North Georgia College and State University. The waterfall is about 200 ft downstream from the cabin. Between the front of the cabin and the falls there is a grassy area that great for bad-mitten or touch football. Then there is a small gravel parking area for the cabins that are across the creek. If you continue walking straight ahead there is a boardwalk to an observation platform at the top of the falls and wooden stairs up to the roadway above. You can walk along the roadway down to the bottom of the falls. The roadway is the easy walk to the bottom of the falls. There is also a foot bridge going across the creek just above the falls and another footbridge across the creek below the falls. I'm not sure if the upper trail across the creek that leads to the other side of the top of the falls has been improved and repaired to allow access to an old timber stairway leading from the top of the falls to bottom. If the stairway is open then you can circle the falls, down one side and up the other. The best wading is just below the falls where you will find a pool of water and the creek has a rocky bottom for rock skipping and easy wading (river shoes or old tennis shoes are nice). Swimming is not allowed in the pool of water at the base of the falls for safety reasons (powerful hydraulics at the base of the falls). At dusk when the kids were young we liked to make "bark boats" out of 6" to 8" pieces of pine bark with lighted birthday candles mounted on top to see who can keep their bark boat lighted the farthest downstream. When the summer campers are out we just give them their space so that we don't disturb their organized activity. The councilors and kids are very friendly. We haven't been horseback riding in years, but I did find some places nearby that have horses to ride. There are two large cast iron bells at the front entrance used as planters for ivy. These bells used to be in front of my great grandfather's home, "Two Bells", in Dahlonega where he owned a general store in the late 1800's. The home was named after his daughter Isabelle (Belle for short) and his granddaughter also named Isabelle. I have been told that one of the bells rang when the civil war ended and the other rang when North Georgia college was founded in 1873. He had the honor of representing the citizens of Dahlonega in the U.S. House of Representatives and secured the U.S. Mint Building in Dahlonega for use as the North Georgia Agricultural College, now know as North Georgia College and State University. He headed up the governing board of the college for over 30 years until his death in 1908. When my great grandfather died my grandfather's family along with my dad moved to Atlanta, and in 1951 my dad and his 3 sisters and brother decided to build this cabin next to Cane Creek so that they could visit their old hometown and discover their roots. Guest AccessThe entire cabin (1000 sf) is available for your enjoyment. There is also a stone terrace at the cabin entrance and the lower terrace about 10 feet from Cane Creek. We have the lower level (1/2 basement) for the mechanical systems, tools, and maintenance supplies (just ask Dawn if you need anything). Interaction with GuestsAudrey and I live about a hour away from the cabin. We have a property manager, Dawn, who looks after our guests and takes good care of our family cabin. The NeighborhoodOur family cabin is surrounded by hundreds of wooded acres that follow along Cane Creeek (including the falls) that are cared for by Camp Glisson, a double gated summer camp and meeting facility. Our cabin is situated just above Cane Creek Falls with vehicle access right to the front terrace for easy unloading, There are a few cabins across the creek that are accessible by a foot bridge and path that winds along the creek. Getting AroundOur family cabin is about 3 miles from the square in Dahlonega, so I would plan on using your vehicle to visit the shopping and restaurants in town. Hiking and bicycling within Camp Glisson on trails and paved roads is quite enjoyable. Other Things to NoteOur cabin is located within Camp Glisson and summer campers are in residence from Memorial Day until Labor Day, so please give the kids some space when you see them, however most of their activities are remote from our family cabin.

The SpaceWe love our little cabin and we know you will too. Originally built in 1938, the cabin has rustic charm. We've added a bathroom and kitchen, but we were careful to leave out air conditioning (it's always cool), TV (we watch the fire for entertainment) and wifi. There is spotty cell reception with Verizon, no att or T-Mobile service. This cabin is the perfect place unplug and reconnect with your friends and family. There's a nice big fire pit outside, just right for warming up after a day hiking or fly fishing at one of the nearby streams. So no tv. No internet. Only Verizon cell service. Guest AccessThere are 2 bedrooms with queen beds and a pull out coach in the main living space. There is also a loft with a full size bed and a fold out couch. The loft is a warm and cozy sleeping spot in the winter! Interaction with GuestsWe will be there to help you get settled and will also be available by phone if you need anything at all! The NeighborhoodThere are 30 privately owned cabins around us. All the cabins were built in the 1930's and are generally passed down from one generation to the next. The cabins are located inside Lake Winfield Scott Recreation area. Getting AroundThe cabin is about 15 miles from the nearest major grocery store. There is a local gas station/grocery about 6 miles away. They usually have firewood by the bundle which is great because the cabin has an amazing fireplace!! North Georgia is fast becoming known as wine country. Our favorite winery is Crane Creek Winery in Young Harris (check out their Friday night tapas!) Other Things to NoteOur cabin is remote, relaxing and RUSTIC. If you want to totally disconnect from modern life and reconnect with your friends and family, you will love our cabin. If you need the Internet, TV, baking or a modern house, our cabin probably isn't what your looking for.

Romantic and private mountain cabin located just north of historic Dahlonega, on Cane Creek with 25 ft high waterfall, great room w/ massive stone fireplace, screened porch w/ rocking chairs overlooking creek, flagstone terrace within 10 ft of creek and flagstone walkway around cabin, 1950s kitchen with antique side board sink, refrigerator, electric stove, coffee maker, toaster, microwave, 1950s bathroom fixtures including porcelain tub/shower with lots of gas hot water, 90% efficient quiet gas furnace, easy unloading-park 15 ft to front door, located inside a gated facility staffed 24/7, just relax and sit by the fire or take a walk along the scenic mountain trails or take the "Georgia Wine Trail" to the many wineries nearby or enjoy a play or movie at the historic Holly Theater. IF YOU DECIDE TO VISIT DAHLONEGA I CAN SHARE SOME OF THE HISTORY OF THE AREA: DAHLONEGA IS A HISTORIC AREA FAMOUS FOR BEING THE SITE OF THE FIRST GOLD IN 1828. SO MUCH GOLD WAS BEING PRODUCED THAT THE U.S.TREASURY BUILT A MINT IN 1838 TO COIN THE GOLD INTO $2-1/2 AND $5 COINS UNTIL THE START OF THE CIVIL WAR. IN THE 1870's THE OLD MINT WAS GIVEN TO THE STATE OF GEORGIA AND BECAME THE NORTH GEORGIA AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE, LATER TO BECOME THE NORTH GEORGIA COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY. DAHLONEGA BECAME A CITY IN 1833 IN THE NEWLY FORMED LUMPKIN COUNTY (*SEE BELOW), WHERE THE FIRST US GOLD RUSH HAPPENED, THEN THERE WERE THE GOLD MINING ADVENTURES OF MY TWO GREAT GRANDFATHERS UNTIL 1900. ONE OF MY GREAT GRANDFATHER'S SERVED TWO TERMS IN THE US CONGRESS AND FOUNDED NORTH GEORGIA COLLEGE, LATER THE DECLINE OF DAHLONEGA AS A BOOM TOWN FROM THE EARLY 1900's TO THE 1970's, AND FINALLY THE RESURGENCE OF DAHLONEGA OVER THE LAST 40 YEARS. NOW DAHLONEGA IS FLOURISHING AS A TOURIST ORIENTED TOWN WITH A FINE UNIVERSITY, SEVERAL WINE VINEYARDS, SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS, AND HOSPITALITY GALORE. *LUMPKIN COUNTY GEORGIA (ONE OF TEN NEW COUNTIES THAT WERE FORMED WHEN THE STATE AND FEDERAL LEADERS CONFISCATED THE CHEROKEE LANDS IN 1828 WHEN GOLD WAS DISCOVERED.
