The SpaceOur guests adore this home and write scores of lovely recommendations in our guest book. Some spend only a night, but Hana deserves longer. Guest AccessGuests have sole use of the house, driveway and lawn. Interaction with GuestsThere are only two houses on our 11 acres, Kolea Cottage and ours, which is about 1000 feet away. We usually meet guests who are welcome to wander on our farm, often getting a guided tour and exotic fruits if we are around, as well as any needed Hana advice. The NeighborhoodKolea has an ocean view from about a mile and 400 feet up the lower slope of Haleakala. Our road is a rural cul-de-sac with very little traffic. Hana's six beaches are between 5 and 15 minutes, and its two small stores about ten minutes away. Getting AroundGuests reach us by rental car. 4WD not necessary. There is no public transport to Hana. Plenty of parking in the driveway. Other Things to NoteSingle-night bookings only accepted when fitting our schedule. The website does not allow full pricing details. Base daily price quoted is mid-season (Apr to mid Dec) for 2 guests and includes Hawaiian GET, 4.2%, and Transient Accommodation Tax, 9.25%. For high season, add $17/night. OWNER SUPPLIED TESTIMONIAL We just returned from celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in Hana and it was just what we were hoping for. Hana Beachfront Hale provided a true Hawaiian experience because it is steps from the lovely Hana Bay, peaceful, surrounded by plants and flowers, private and quiet! The ocean facing windows with no window coverings brought the outdoors in. Yet, it was still private because of the higher elevation of the home. The wrap-around lanai with large overhanging roof allowed us to sit outside and stay dry while it rained. There were no barking dogs or crowing roosters. Just nice neighbors out for a stroll who would wave as they passed. Everyone waved to us in Hana and we felt very welcomed. The Aloha Spirit is alive & well in Hana! The kitchen was beautiful, modern and complete including a full-sized oven & refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave oven. Coffee maker, coffee and filters provided. Ceiling fans were in every room. The beds were very comfortable. The 2 person shower (2 shower heads) was romantic and efficient. We never turned on either of the TVs. We were also very impressed with the communication of the property manager. Rebecca was friendly, efficient and prompt in answering our questions. We will definitely stay here again and highly recommend it. Kelley O., October 2015 25% deposit on credit card to make a reservation. Payment due in full 30 days prior to arrival. You drive some two hours on the Hana Highway, one of the USA’s most renowned roads, crossing about sixty bridges as you wind along the scenic crags of Haleakala marveling at the waterfalls and looking down on the wide ocean. This spectacular journey takes you to the best place in the world, in our view. Our beaches—there are six of them, all quite different—are never crowded, our ocean and mountain views are everywhere superb, our people delightful, our rain forest is fascinating and our climate, though wet and encouraging to bugs, perfect. The spiritual feeling of old Hawai’i is hard to find nowadays, yet it permeates Hana, far from tourist hordes. But, if you are looking for a happy place to stay in Hana, you probably know all that already; and that a day trip is not enough. So here’s why to ring us to check out Kolea Cottage as your comfortable, competitively priced, Hana base for a few days or weeks. Kolea, timber-built in 2003, is located on the lower slopes of the 10,000 foot Mount Haleakala, surrounded by lawn carved out of the forest in a secluded corner of old ranch land. Our 11-acre estate is bursting with flowers, fruit trees and tropical plants of many sorts. Guests are welcome to fruit from our trees, flowers from the garden and books from our library to read while listening to CDs of Hana musicians or the dawn and dusk bird chorus, enjoying the ocean view from the lanai. Kolea’s principal bedroom has a queen bed, the second bedroom twin beds or king bed. There is an overflow bed for an occasional fifth person in the living room. Soft linen, towels and beach towels are provided. Bathroom with tub. Covered lanai with seating. In total, 1,200 sq ft of comfortable home. The kitchen area, which has plenty of storage and a separate pantry, oven, microwave, blender, and ice-making fridge, is fully equipped with cooking and dining things. The washer and drier are in a closet off the lanai. Kolea has Time Warner cable connected to a 32” flat-screen color TV, CD/DVD player, telephone, internet and wi-fi. Any special requirements—give us a call and we will do our best. We can on request provide snorkeling gear and boogie boards and we can guide you on the eating possibilities and the many things to do around Hana, including special local events which are often not much publicized. None are more than a short drive away. Kolea Cottage is named for the beautiful bird that owns the cottage lawn, otherwise known as the Hawaiian golden plover. You may meet her if you are here in the right season, for this remarkable navigator puts on her best plumage and departs in the spring to fly 3,000 miles across the ocean for a summer in Alaska, where she raises a family before returning accurately to our yard in the early fall. One night bookings only accepted when fitting in with existing reservations Guests over 2 charged at $17/day inc tax The cleaning fee applies to stays of one or two nights only We believe Hana is one of the world's delights. A tropical rainforest with USA facilities at the end of a spectacular highway. Best defined by what we don't have - parking meters, traffic lights, street lights (too few to pollute the night sky), crowded beaches, amusement arcades, fast food, the paraphernalia of noisy seaside holidays. Yet there's lots to do and see, on land, beach and ocean. We can be your guides as well as your hosts at Kolea Cottage.

The SpacePLEASE READ FULL DESCRIPTION. THANK YOU! We are located in the small village of Nahiku, half an hour from the town of Hana. We are very remote, and far from the 'other side' of Maui, where most of the hotels and beaches are located. So if you'd like a unique opportunity to spend some time in a remote tropical location and see what it's like to farm in the jungle, here's your chance! Consider this a rustic farm stay experience in a beautiful, lush environment. This is a very rustic place, where we embrace simplicity and nature. We are a homesteading family, living simply to create a light footprint. We are offering a basic dwelling for people to experience something different. There are basic amenities; a propane cookstove and fridge and attached outdoor shower. There is a composting toilet a short walk away, which is sometimes shared with work traders or friends visiting the farm. There is minimal electricity since we are off the grid, so please bring a headlamp. We are a small working farm with young children. Farm duties are performed daily, and we welcome you to pick salads from the garden and fruit from the trees. Also, we have a common kitchen which is mainly used by our farm workers/friends, inside our large "barn". Here there is also a telephone, weight room, workshop, and a large living area. We usually have a few extra people staying on the farm besides our family. They are work traders, interns, or family friends returning for an extended visit. They are always friendly and open to interaction and communication! Our farm animals include four dairy goats, 34 hens and one rooster, 2 dogs, 2 cats, a turtle, and a rabbit! They are all very friendly and love attention. We are located down a quiet road with the ocean only a mile away. There are waterfalls to visit, and the walk down to the ocean on the Lower Nahiku Road is beautiful and remote, with spectacular views. We are a half hour's drive to the small town of Hana, where there are many beautiful beaches and natural scenery to immerse yourself in. Since there is no cell phone or internet service, this is your chance to really unplug and get away from it all. We are offering something different, a real adventure on a remote organic farm in the jungle! Guest AccessInteraction with animals, participation in farm duties, harvesting fruits and veggies. Interaction with GuestsWe will usually be available to give a tour of the farm and include you in any farm activity you are interested in. We are normally home, interacting with our children and animals! Other Things to NoteNo internet or cell service. Please bring headlamp or flashlight for trips to the bathroom or car at night! (one lantern is provided for extra light) Our dogs may bark when you arrive, and they are not on a leash or run. They are VERY friendly, and enjoy wandering about the farm. There can sometimes be LOTS of mosquitos. Mosquito coils and a bug zapper are provided in the cottage, but we highly recommend bringing a bug repellent as well. Our driveway is quite steep and difficult to maneuver if you are in a very low clearance vehicle. We've had all sorts of vehicles make it up here, but some are better than others! Just a heads up when considering staying here!

I don't think you can get the feel of Hana by just being there a couple hours. The Hana Palms was wonderful. It isn't a place for (URL HIDDEN) isn't the Hilton (or the Hana Travaasa Hotel), but it is wonderful in it's own way. We stayed in the lower property. It was nice, clean and had everything we needed. It is in a rain forest and things didn't always dry well, so be sure to ask where the dryer is! We walked the property and saw lots of native plants. It is a great place to roam (but watch for spider webs if you walk in the morning!). It was a short easy drive to Hana and a great starting point for all our journeys on the west side of Maui. There is a great fruit, smoothie & fresh banana bread stand at the (URL HIDDEN) sure to walk there...a nice start to each morning. Take the time to travel the Hana Highway south of town to see waterfalls, The Pools of Ohe'o (in the National Park), Palapala Ho'omau Church & Charles Lindbergh's grave and just past the church & grave on the right is the best fruit stand for a snack...worth the extra quarter mile or so. The hike to the red sand beach is an experience in it's self, but the beach is worth the hike. If you don't need daily maid service and you like unique places, stay at the Hana Palms...you won't regret it!! Sarah, January 2014 Hana Garden House Weekend We would like to simply say that our experience with the Hana Palms Retreat was exceptional in every way. Firstly, we received the information on the Hana Palms Retreat from a referral. The house and property are spectacular. More importantly, all correspondence with the owner was direct and very accommodating. This property is everything that one would imagine a Hana Retreat to be. We rented the entire Garden House both upper and lower and could not be more satisfied with the entire experience and would highly recommend anyone to do the same...you will not be sorry! There is no cooking facility but a continental breakfast is provided with abundant local fresh fruit, great coffee and teas, granola, and often special treats (banana bread). There is a mini refrigerator and toaster. There are several food options in Hana town. The hot outdoor shower is 50 feet away from the studio and there is a private 1/2 bath in your rental. Most everyone loves this as it has the most breath-taking views! Interaction with GuestsOccasional. Most people come for privacy and peace which I respect. The NeighborhoodI welcome visitors and friends to my home and studio located above the 70-acres of protected conservation lands ! Getting AroundYou'll need your own transportation- there are NO taxis, Ubers, or public transportation in the area. It is advisable that guests arrive in daylight as there are no streetlights or easy way to find for the first visit. Additionally cell phone service is bad - non existent- on the whole 2 hour drive from Kahului! This is a remote area - with one gas station and few places to dine - but there is deep peace and such heavenly beauty! Other Things to NoteThere is limited dining in this area. Host provides a self-service, simple continental style breakfast including tea and coffee and fresh seasonal fruits. There are several food trucks and stands in Hana Town (see Trip Advisor or Yelp for ratings). There is one re$ort (the Travassa) for "fine dining" and there is the Hana Ranch Restaurant (last seating is at 8:30).

Interaction with GuestsYou'll be greeted upon your arrival and provided a brief tour of the accommodations, and we'll update you about pertinent goings-on that may be of interest to you. Feel free to ask all the questions you wish! The NeighborhoodWe are located in the Kaawaloa "ahupua'a" (district) of Hāna, 5 miles south of Hāna Town. Our long stretch of road sets just above the coastline, so most home in our neighborhood is blessed with stunning ocean views. The area is made up of long time local families along with many residents originally from all over the U.S. mainland. We are a tight-knit neighborhood where everyone watches out for each other and shares their Aloha freely and abundantly. We are surrounded by incredible nature, and early morning or sunset walks through the area can be exhilarating. Nights are dark and quiet, with star-filled skies and brightly lit full moons. You may not want to leave! Getting AroundOne thing that makes Hāna so desirable is it's remoteness. While only 35 miles from the closet commercial hub and flow of Maui, Paia, you feel worlds away. Getting to Hāna is limited, so having your own vehicle is crucial. Be sure to make car rental reservations well ahead of your trip. The drive on the Hāna Highway is extraordinary, and you will want to take your time as there is so much to see. Once your arrive in Hāna, driving around is a piece of cake! Other Things to NoteHāna is a tropical place! The verdant foliage and mild climate support an abundance of insect and animal life. But no snakes anywhere in Hawaii! Awaken each morning to a chorus of birds. Our location in Kaawaloa is dryer and sunnier than the denser rain forests areas of Hāna. That means we have fewer mosquitoes and other insects. However, we do recommend you bring your favorite insect repellent just in case. We make every effort to keep your accommodations free of pests. Leaving food out and uncovered may attract ants and other unwanted visitors.

Take note that the road to Hana is a long and winding one - both ways. Be prepared to spend a full day driving one way. We recommend driving the highway in its entirety, it is an experience in its own. On your return to the other side of the island, if you time your adventure right, you can witness sunset at Haleakala Crater - - 10,000 feet above the Central Valley of Maui! We have an informative guest book with extensive information on the Hana area, the sites, activities and services available in the area. The NeighborhoodHana is known as the last Hawaiian place. Our community is still predominantly Hawaiian. Hana has a rich history and the Hawaiian population in this area once numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Today Hana's population is under 2000, from Keanae to Kaupo, a 40 mile coastal radius. Hana Kai is centrally located and easily accessible. The property is nestled along the North side of Hana Bay at the entrance to Waikoloa Beach. Although we do not recommend swimming (except on very calm days), Waikoloa Beach is wonderful to explore and you can actually walk for several miles on the coastal trail to Waianapanapa State park.
