The SpaceLei O Kohala guest suite is located in historic North Kohala, in the ancient ahupua'a division of Puuepa. Surrounded by several na pu'u (volcanic cinder cones), the hillside setting has unobstructed views of Haleakala, Maui across the Alenuihaha Channel. Bordering Parker Ranch on the west, the south and east sides are also undeveloped, giving the vacation rental seclusion and privacy. Puuepa is the site of the ancient Mo'okini Heiau (temple) whose origins date back 1,500 years ago to the first human migration from the Marquesas. Puuepa is also the birthplace of King Kamehameha the Great who conquered and unified the Hawaiian Islands. Decades later, St. Damien became the pastor of Hawi Sacred Heart Catholic Church before taking on his destined work of charity at the Kalaupapa Leper Colony on Molokai. Lei O Kohala is located near the old sugar plantation town of Hawi with its many shops, galleries and restaurants. 2 miles further, quaint Kapaau town is the site of the original statue of King Kamehameha. Continuing on the Akoni Pule Highway, you will end at the outlook overlooking breathtakingly beautiful and inspiring Pololu Valley. To the south of Lei O Kohala Vacation Rental, world class white and black sand beaches are as near as a short 20 minute drive. Up country Kamuela is located 30 minutes away. Kona International Airport is located 50 minutes away. Enjoy your morning complimentary Kona blend coffee on the veranda while as many as 20 species of birds greet you with their songs. Sip your favorite wine on the terrace under the venerable whispering ironwood trees. Don’t be surprised if the curious Parker Ranch cattle come right up to the fence and stare at you! Or if the wild tom turkey leads his flock across the open pasture. Lei O Kohala is located where the rainy part of North Kohala ends, and the arid landscape begins. This climate transition frequently gives birth to incredibly gorgeous rainbows! And blessed are those late afternoons as the setting sun paints the sky with hues of gold, pink, orange and red. On a clear new moon night, step outside, look up and marvel at nature’s incomparable grand display of the Milky Way spreading across the star lit sky. Lei O Kohala is a place of beauty, peace and inspiration. The guest suite is accessed via a private entrance. The kitchen is fully equipped and has a bay window dining area. Step through the double French doors and relax on the 34 feet veranda with views of the ocean and Maui. Kohala Guest Suite is located in historic North Kohala, in the ancient ahupua'a division of Puuepa. The guest suite is a spacious 816 sf, one bedroom, one bath, living room, study with full kitchen. It is a totally separate unit with its own private entrance. It is so self-contained that you wouldn't think the guest suite was part of the main house. The kitchen is fully equipped and has a bay window dining area. Step through the double French doors and relax on the 34 feet veranda with views of the ocean and Maui. The living room is furnished with heirloom heritage koa furniture and a pune’e (day bed) for lounging. The bedroom is appointed with a luxury Stearns & Foster pillow top queen bed and accented with Hawaiian design quilted pillows. Need internet connectivity? The NeighborhoodNorth Kohala is a special place- ask anyone who lives here. Today there are many natural and cultural things to explore in this beautiful area, as well as a booming arts scene. The SpaceSleep high in the trees, with your head in the tradewinds, in this whimsical, tropical hideaway. Two-story, 400sq ft, cabin with complete kitchen, double bed, single bed, 12v DC off-grid power. When the ocean is rough you can hear the waves crashing about a mile away. Most often the Kamakani winds of Kohala through the ironwoods is all one hears. At times the birdsong can be remarkable. Guest AccessHawk's Nest is secluded and private, located on a 20 acre parcel in the middle of 100 of acres of sugar cane lands that have been fallow since the demise of sugar in this area over 40 years ago. Maui looms on the horizon, the Kohala Mountains and Mauna Kea make up the sky line of the island behind. Interaction with GuestsThere are other quests at times and residents on the property but often you will feel you are alone on the property. Occasionally folks may gather to eat, play music (Hawi is a very musical town), and/or listen to Prairie Home Companion. Guests are welcome to join in or disengage to any degree they care. Everyone is friendly and interested in helping you have a good time. The NeighborhoodKohala isn't on the way to anywhere else. Off the well beaten path it is home to the largest native Hawaiian population in the state and is the birthplace of Kamehameha the Great who along with John Young founded the Kingdom of Hawai`i in 1795. Much of the Kohala coastline is cliffs overlooking the Alenuihaha Channel between here and Maui. The mountain of Haleakala looms 10,000' above sea level across the channel. Mauna Kea stands nearly 14,000' to the south. To the east is a system of valleys that offers hiking opportunities from the intermediate to the most advanced. Pololu Valley is a day hike to black sand beaches, prawn filled streams and edge of the world tropical wonder. Just to the west one comes into the lee side of the island out of the tradewinds that most often blow steadily in the rest of Kohala. A land of rainbows that offers ocean access for snorkeling and a shoreline littered with ruins from the Neolithic to the days of whaling and sugar plantations. For locals, almost every 100yd around here has another place name reflecting some part of the rich history of this place but for the casual visitor the towns of Hawi and Kapa`au make up a lot of Kohala. Sleepy plantation towns for many years, they are now vibrant with many great places to eat and shop. We have a large musical community and have a surprising number of live music venues for such small towns. Art of inspiring beauty and craft fills the shops. On Saturdays there's a great open-air, farmer's market with food and music and tropical produce and smiles and hugs. Other Things to NoteGuests should be physically fit to best navigate the trail to Hawk's Nest.
