The SpaceWaipi'o Hostel is located in the quaint village of Kukuihaele, less than a mile from majestic Waipiʻo Valley. In a place where horses and wild turkeys often wander by, this is the old Hawaiʻi. A place where neighbors are welcoming and life is sweet as the smell of sugar cane grass. You'll enjoy the wonderful ocean view and many fruit and macadamia nut trees on the property. We enjoy the best weather on the island- not hot like Kona, not rainy like Hilo, not cold like Waimea… just perfect!! It’s also a central location for exploring the Hilo and Kona sides of the island. Just 10 minutes away is the lovely town of Honokaʻa, with farmers markets, antique shops, restaurants, and the coolest old movie theater in the world. Our three guest rooms are called "hostel style" but are really private rooms below the main home. The rooms are simple, yet nicely decorated, clean, with great beds. Guests share a bathroom, outdoor patio and living room with high speed Wi-Fi, couches, cable TV, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, and gas grill. We are a "green" facility which is cleaned and laundered with non-toxic cleaning products. Guests may also pick ripe fruit from the yard. We usually have all the fruit you can eat! (Tangerines, macadamia nuts, guava, avocados, bananas…) We also have a flock of hens with sometimes enough fresh eggs to share. Our guests tend to be excellent company, usually visiting from Europe, the US Mainland, Asia, Australia and beyond. The Waipʻo Hostel Kai Room is bright and airy with a comfortable king size bed. The house itself is an authentic “plantation home” built in 1922 and oozing with character. These walls have stories to tell! My wife and I live upstairs with our 3 children as your hosts. So the disclaimer is: if you are not looking for total quiet and enjoy interacting with other travelers in the simple beauty of the Hamakua Coast, this is your place. We run an outdoor education program for teenagers (Hawaii Outdoors Institute) and are very knowledgeable about hiking in Waipi’o, Waimanu and other outdoor adventures. Many people use the hostel as a launching point for hiking trips. Ask us about camping equipment rental if you need. We have everything! *Due to the nature of the hostel business, we reserve the right to assign an alternate room of equal quality in the event the requested room is not available. We also offer the "Aina Room" and "Lehua Room." Our guests give us excellent reviews: "Before coming to the Waipiʻo Hostel, I stayed at the Marriott and at a private resort, and let me tell you... I had the best time here the most!!! I enjoyed visits from wild turkeys and the world's most affectionate cat. I enjoyed the ocean view, the flowers and all the fruit I could sink my teeth into, and most of all, the hospitality extended by Greg and Harmony. They made sure we were comfortable and felt at home. We had a wonderful experience." "This was a really fantastic place to stay. We were greeted by Greg and his family who live upstairs. They made sure we felt welcome and had everything we needed. The other guests in the hostel were really lovely too. A bonus of staying here was the abundant fruit trees - macadamias, guavas, bananas, avocados, which were all delicious. The place is beautiful too - a short (but steep) hike down into the valley allows you to either go to the beach, or view a fantastic waterfall if you head off in the other direction. Overall it was a fantastic stay, but it was the people there that really made it memorable. We wished we could have stayed longer." Join us!!

Waipi'o Hostel is located in the quaint village of Kukuihaele, less than a mile from majestic Waipiʻo Valley. It's also a central location for exploring the Hilo and Kona sides of the island. The Waipʻo Hostel ʻAina Room is the coolest room in the house. It's windows allow the mountain breeze to flow through, but no direct sunlight. The house itself is an authentic “plantation home" built in 1922 and oozing with character. These walls have stories to tell! My wife and I live upstairs with our 3 children as your hosts. So the disclaimer is: if you are not looking for total quiet and enjoy interacting with other travelers in the simple beauty of the Hamakua Coast, this is your place. We run an outdoor education program for teenagers (Hawaii Outdoors Institute) and are very knowledgeable about hiking in Waipi'o, Waimanu and other outdoor adventures.

Take another short fairly steep path (for sturdy feet only) past the banyan tree and passion fruit vines into the gulch on our property. Listen to the peaceful sounds of the waiulili stream and a waterfall running through the property and over a 650' cliff at the edge of the property. Waipio lookout is 1/2 mile away. Overview of the neighborhood: old hawaii with conveniences, safe, private, lush natural beauty and most of the comforts of home. Otherwise drive east along the lush hamakua coast, see world famous botanical gardens, hilo, volcanoes national park, natural hot springs in pahoa. Take the saddle road between hilo and waimea and drive to the 14,000 top of mauna kea along the way (many countries have their space observatories there). Visit kona and see if you think the preferred coffee of the white house is really as good as the lesser locally known rich tasting hamakua coast coffee. Hale kukui grows small amounts of its own and while we don't dry and roast it, you are welcome to try. Interaction with caretakers, Paula and Dan, can be as little or as much as visitors want. If you are able to pull yourself away to see other parts of the island, hale kukui is a great stepping stone to the whole island. Walk or drive to the waipio lookout only 1/2 mile away. The famous black sand beach in waipio valley is another mile down a steep winding 25% grade road and the beach is seen from the property. Explore the quaint town of honoka'a 10 minutes away with its theater, restaurants, grocery stores, outdoor farmers market and a hospital/clinic. Hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping, and surfing are all accessible between Kukuihaele, waipio valley and Honoka'a. Go to merriman's for the best seafood and kailua pork quesadillas. White sand beaches, the larger hotels are a 50-70 minutes drive across the northeast end of the island through hawaiian cowboy country. Mauna kea is 14,000 + feet above sea level. Mauna kea can be driven to the top and it is the tallest mountain in the world from the sea floor. Hilo has a great outdoor market, shopping, surfing, etc. And it is a beautiful 1 hour drive along the hamakua coast. Another 30 minutes or so beyond is the must see volcanoes national park and swim in the hot springs in pahoa. Kona is about 1.5 hours away along very nice highways as are most places. Try hamakua coast coffee which many say is better than the world famous kona coffee served at the white house. The whole island has so much to offer but you will definitely want to relax at hale kukui for its incredible views and natural private surroundings. Each unit or cottage has Internet, its own kitchen and bathroom. just in case you don't want to leave. A $5 fee is included in your rate which makes you a member of the orchard as a visitor for 1 year so your stay complies with our mission to have you enjoy and learn a little about hawaiian permaculture farming on a small scale. Many of our trees are labelled so you may learn about the fruit, nuts, spices and from which part of the world they come. Caution!! We don't recommend going near the cliff's edge which may be unstable or walking under coconut trees because the nuts occasionally fall and may be deadly. Only go into the gulch if you are physically fit even though it is a short path.
