The SpaceOur home serves as a temporary residence for many different musicians, artists, academics, & business people. In fact, what makes our house unique is that we have now served as hosts to people from all over the world and sometimes at the same time. We started doing this when I took a job as the Midwest Coordinator for an International High School Student Exchange Program and got to know how easy it was meeting people from around the world. Since then, and hosting many Northwestern Graduate Students working on their PhDs in our home, our friends have taken to calling our house the "Gertrude Stein Home of Evanston", which I take as a compliment. They explain this by saying, each time they meet someone at our home, they know they are going to learn something new. They also have said that they have been impressed to see that not only are these people living in our home, but they can see that they have become our friends. And, they love the comeradie they feel which eminates from our home. If only we could bottle that and sell it to the world, eh? Being located, just 1 block from the train, we are extremely well-located for university students, not only of Northwestern U., but also Loyola Univ., Northeastern Univ. & DePaul Univ. Evanston is home to Northwestern University, which was voted #4 in a recent poll concerning the most walkable campuses. The only university towns voted more walkable were: 1. Cambridge, MA Walk Score 87 (Harvard University and MIT) 2. Berkeley, CA Walk Score 79 (University of California at Berkeley) 3. Providence, RI Walk Score 76 (Brown University) 4. Evanston, IL Walk Score 74 (Northwestern University Evanston boasts tree-lined lakefront paths for biking/jogging, a vibrant shopping district, dozens of ethnically diverse restaurants, live music venues, movie theaters and more. Northwestern, and the lakefront, are less than 10 minutes from our home. Our location, could not be any better than it is. We are just steps away from a new Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, & Jewel Foods. Our home, built in 1888, is located in the Evanston Lakefront Historic District. Although our home is vintage, it has all of the modern amenities a person needs for our 21st century lifestyles. Our home is located just 3 blocks west of Lake Michigan and a block east of the train to downtown Chicago, which is approximately 25 minutes away. If you have kids, we also have a play lot across the street and several along the lakefront. We also have 2 little white/black toy fox terrier dogs that I've never heard as much as a growl from. They have always been great at making friends w/ people. Recently, we had two young men with us. A young German man from Wiesbaden who had never had a dog before. 6 months later, he was so in love with these pupettes, that I think, if he would have tried to take one more picture on his phone, it might have exploded! haaaa. Then there was Yuong (Tony) Liu, from China. He also had never had a dog and at first was very frightened of dogs. He would walk towards them and if they started to approach him, he would turn on his heels and walk very fast the other way. Well after some coaching, Tony, too fell in love w/ these two little harmless pupettes. The worse these two can do is shed some of that white fur on you, which I'm always trying to control, but.... Because I am a writer, I work out of our home, and am always available to answer any questions you have. Questions re: how to use something in the house or about the local area. Our breakfasts are Continental style. We serve morning coffee, juice, toast, muffins and in each bedroom, there is a refrigerator, so you can shop and make your meals at will in our kitchen. We do have a large, bright kitchen that people tend to enjoy hanging in. Everyone is free to use our kitchen appliances as long as they clean up after themselves. Guest are free to work just about anywhere they wish in the house, whether on the first floor, the living room is a pleasant room to work with lots of light, as is our kitchen, family room, screened in back porch or the outside patio. Also, we have a free laundry facility on the second floor for small loads of laundry or you can use the basement laundry facility for your larger loads of laundry. Our neighborhood is great for walking along the lake, looking at the historical older homes in the neighborhood, or riding a bike along the lake, which can be rented at a nearby bike shop. The SpaceOur home serves as a temporary residence for many different musicians, artists, academics, & business people. We aim to have everybody arrive in our home a visitor, but leave as a friend. In fact, what makes our house unique is that we have now served as hosts to people from all over the world and sometime at the same time. We started doing this when I took a job as the Midwest Coordinator for an International High School Student Exchange Program and got to know how easy it was meeting people from around the world. Since then, and hosting many Northwestern Graduate Students working on their Masters in our home, our friends have taken to calling our house the "Gertrude Stein Home of Evanston", which I take as a compliment. They explain this by saying, each time they meet someone at our home, they know they are going to learn something new. They also have said that they have been impressed to see that not only are these people living in our home, but they can see that they have become our friends. And, they love the comeradie they feel which emenates from our home. If only we could bottle that and sell it to the world, eh? Being located, just 1 block from the train, we are extremely well-located for university students, not only of Northwestern U., but also Loyola Univ., Northeastern Univ. & DePaul Univ. Recently, Northwestern University, was voted #4 in a recent poll concerning the most walkable campuses. Evanston, IL Walk Score 74 (Northwestern University Evanston is home to Northwestern University and boasts tree-lined lakefront paths for biking/jogging, a vibrant shopping district, dozens of ethnically diverse restaurants, live music venues, movie theaters and more. Northwestern, and the lakefront, are only a few minutes away. Evanston has many of the best Midwestern tourists attractions within a day's reach. It is a great place to base yourself whether your visiting for purposes of Northwestern University, or you want to experience Chicago. Our home, built in 1888, located in the EVANSTON LAKEFRONT HISTORIC DISTRICT, is just blocks south of the NU campus. Although our home is vintage, it has all of the modern amenities a person needs for 21st century lifestyles. We have central air and heat, cable TV and wireless internet everywhere in the house and yard. It is one block to a Whole Foods, and there is a Trader Joe's behind our house on Chicago Ave. (TJ's is an upscale Aldi's owned by the other German brother.) Our home is located just 3 blocks west of Lake Michigan and a block east of the train to downtown Chicago, which is approximately 25 minutes away. Six months later, he was so in love with these pupettes, that I think, if he would have tried to take one more picture on his phone, it might have exploded! Because I am a writer, I work out of our home, and will always be available to answer any questions you may have that come up. Questions, such as about using something in the house or about our local area. We do serve a Continental Breakfast of morning coffee/tea, muffins, fresh fruit & toast. In each bedroom, there is a refrigerator, so you can bring home leftovers, and shop to make your meals at will in our kitchen. We do have a large, bright kitchen that people like to hang in. Since then, and hosting many Northwestern Graduate Students working on their Masters in our home, our friends have taken to calling our house the "Gertrude Stein Home of Evanston," which I take as a compliment. They explain this by saying, each time they meet someone at our house, they know they are going to learn something new. They also have said that they have been impressed to see that not only are these people living in our home, but they can see that they have become our friends. And, they love the comaradi they feel which emminates from our home. Evanston, IL Walk Score 74 (Northwestern University Our Loft Room is 800 sq ft of living space on the 3rd floor of this restored historic home. Space includes big screen TV, w/ surround sound system, treadmill, leather sofa, desk., bed and bureau for your clothing. There are 2 beds, with one that is a trundle bed that sleeps 2. We also have a queen-size air mattress, if more beds are needed. Evanston is home to Northwestern University and boasts tree-lined lakefront paths for biking/jogging, a vibrant shopping district, dozens of ethnically diverse restaurants, live music venues, movie theaters and more. Northwestern, and the lakefront, are only a few minutes away. Evanston has many of the best Midwestern tourists attractions within a day's reach. It is a great place to base yourself whether your visiting for purposes of Northwestern University, or you want to experience Chicago. Our home, built in 1888, is located several blocks south of the NU campus in Evanston's Lakefront Historic District. Although our home is vintage, it has all of the modern amenities a person needs for our 21st century lifestyles. We have central air and heat, cable TV and wireless internet everywhere in the house and yard. It is one block to a Whole Foods, and there is a Trader Joe's just behind our house . Our home is located just 3 blocks west of Lake Michigan and a block east of the train to downtown Chicago, which is approximately 25 minutes away. If you have kids, we also have a play lot across the street and several along the lakefront. We have 2 little white/black toy fox terrier dogs that I've never heard as much as a growl from. Because I am a writer, I work out of our home, and will always be available to answer any questions you may have that come up. Questions, such as about using something in the house or about our local area. We do serve morning coffee and in each bedroom, there is a refrigerator, so you can shop and make your meals at will in our kitchen. We do have a large, bright kitchen that people like to hang in. Everyone is free to use all our kitchen appliances as long as they clean up after themselves. I will be happy to show you where things are stored. Also, in each bedroom there is a desk for your laptop where you can do you work if necessary. Guest are free to work just about anywhere they wish in the house (the glory of Wi-Fi) whether in the first floor since the living room is a pleasant room to work in with lots of light, or the kitchen, family room, screened in back porch or the outside patio. Also, we have a free laundry facility on the second floor for small loads of laundry or you can use the basement laundry facility for your larger loads. Our neighborhood is great for walking/jogging along the lake, looking at the historic older homes in the neighborhood, or riding a bike along the lake, which can be rented at a nearby bike shop. Once you are at our home, you really won't have the need to use a car because most things are just a short walk away, If you do need a car, there is free car parking on the streets near our home. Or you can rent a Zip Car a few blocks away! We're open to all people and lifestyles, but we'd prefer not to invite you into our home without knowing something about you. Thank you for your consideration. ABOUT US... I've lived in Chicago for all of my life and there is not a neighborhood in Chicago that I am not familiar with. My husband is from Mystic, CT, and has learned to use Lake Michigan to answer his love of living near the water. We will respect your privacy but also happily assist you with anything you might need to make your stay in Chicago more enjoyable. See our profile for more information about us WHAT IS THE HINMAN HOUSE SPACE LIKE... Unlike most Victorian era homes, all of the rooms in The Hinman House are quite large. In addition, the first thing you will notice is how high the ceilings are. At 12' high, it adds to this feeling of spaciousness that everybody feels upon entering our home. It has 5 bedrooms and 2.5 baths If you were to ask someone to describe what style our home is, I believe the best answer would be eclectic! If we like something, it can come into our home. There is no one style! With WiFi available throughout the house, guests are free to work just about anywhere they wish on the first floor since the living room is a pleasant place to work because of all of the windows. Besides the downstairs living room, guests are welcome to use the kitchen, family room, or dining room, Or, in good weather, you can use the screened in outside porch, or backyard patio and our BBQ grill. In other words, as long as you are neat about where you work and clean up after yourself, you are free to use which ever room in the house fits your needs best. We may not serve a full breakfast, but always serve coffee/tea for our guests and a sort of continental breakfast of bagle, fruit/ yogurt, toast with jam, or muffins, depending on your preference. EACH BEDROOM CONTAINS... In each bedroom there is a refrigerator, so you can shop and make your meals at will in our kitchen. There also is a desk for your laptop and phone chargers, etc. , a closet to hang clothing, and a bureau for folding things. WHAT IS OUR NEIGHBORHOOD LIKE... We have three large grocery stores, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's & Jewels, within a block of our home. And so very many nearby inexpensive and good eclectic restaurants, you can find a meal to fit whatever your ethnic desires may be... and they are all within walking distance! DOES THE HINMAN HOUSE HAVE NEARBY PUBLIC TRANSIT Yes, we are located just south of the NU campus and east of the train to go to DOWNTOWN CHICAGO. Once you arrive at our home, you really won't have the need to use a car because most things are just a short WALK AWAY! If you do have a car, let me encourage you to park on the east side of the street. COMING TO HINMAN HOME VIA O'HARE AIRPORT If you are arriving to Chicago via O'Hare airport, there is one bus you can catch at the airport that will take you to within blocks of our home. You catch this bus at the end of the People Mover line at the Kiss & Ride parking lot. This is where where you will catch Bus 250 and it will take you to Evanston for a whopping $1.75! A taxi ride will cost you approx $45. COMING TO HINMAN HOUSE VIA MIDWAY AIRPORT At the airport, you can take public transportation by catching an ORANGE LINE TRAIN to downtown Chicago, right in the airport. Then, once you are. IN DOWNTOWN CHICAGO, you would change trains at Roosevelt Rd and take the RED LINE TRAIN to Howard St, where you transfer to the PURPLE LINE TRAIN and take that into Evanston for the last mile of your journey. It may sound long, but should take no longer than one hour. WHAT OTHER UNIQUE THINGS WILL YOU FIND NEARBY... The SpaceThis is a quaint apartment in an older modest building. It is not luxurious or even very modern. Rather, it is a comfortable, affordable, 1st floor apartment on a quiet tree-lined street. That being said, we love our home and hope to host others who looking for a no-frills place centrally located amongst Chicago's north side and suburbs. Our family lives in the multi-unit building and are more than willing to assist in making your stay enjoyable. -2 bedrooms each with a comfortable Queen bed, box spring, & TV. -Living room with TV (+Netflix) & full fold-out sofa bed. -1 fold-out sofa bed (5'8" long) in small children's nook/room for child or short adult. Bed is on firm side. -Bedroom 1 TV w/HBO + basic. -Bedroom 2 TV w/NETFLIX. -high capacity 10,000btu air conditioning unit in dining room. -additional air conditioning units in each bedroom. -central heat with thermostat. -Breakfast nook next to kitchen -Free Internet (strong signal) -Kitchen is fully stocked with microwave, toaster oven, pots, pans, plates, silverware, and glassware. -There is also a hairdryer, body wash and shampoo and conditioner provided. -Gas stove with burners work, but the oven underneath does not light. There is a toaster oven though that works well. Guest AccessGuest have their own private entry way. There is a deadbolt and keyed door knob to their private entrance. Interaction with GuestsI am available via phone, text or email, as is my wife. Since we live 5 minutes away, we are very accessible and more than willing to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The NeighborhoodIt is conveniently located minutes from Northwestern University campus and downtown Evanston. It is 3.7 miles to Westfield Old Orchard Mall (Macy's, Nordstrom, Apple, etc). A 6 minute walk to the 208 bus takes you right there. Also less than 5 miles from Walmart, Marianos Fresh Market and Lincolnwood Town Center Mall, it is another easy bus ride to almost anything one needs. We posted a crime heat map of Evanston and the surrounding areas from City-Data. Much like Chicago's north and west suburbs, Evanston is considered low crime, especially when viewed against most any Chicago area. There are many grocery options nearby. The closest is 7-11 for quick essentials. It is just a 3 minute drive East on Emerson. The cheapest is Food4Less on Main St just a 7 minute drive away. We prefer the new Mariano's on Touhy in Skokie which is 10 minutes away. There is also Whole Foods on Sherman just 6 minutes away in Downtown Evanston. You can pretty easily look up all of these grocers to find one that best fits your preferences. Getting AroundThe closest major intersection is Asbury and Emerson, but we are very close to the center of Airbnb's target circle on the listing page. Just 11 minutes to I-94 to connect to the most common destinations in the city or north of it. Without traffic, it is 27 minutes to O'hare Airport taking I-294. The 250 CTA bus goes from O'hare Airport to the Davis Street stop in Evanston (15 minute walk from our building). We are less than 3 miles north of Chicago. Going to downtown Chicago (e.g., River North Grand Exit) is a 12 minute walk to the Purple Line, then 42 minutes on the Purple & Red Lines. You can save about 9 minutes time going downtown taking the 201 bus to the Red Line. I got all time estimates from googl maps which you can query given your desired travel times. Uber is very active in Evanston with Northwestern University so close. It's usually only a few minutes wait. If you want a discount, use promo code isxly on uber on your first ride. Normally, it's only a few bucks on Uber to the nearby public transportation hubs. Other Things to NoteThere is a Newtown Cleaners & Laundromat (5 stars on Yelp) 3 minutes away by car. I'd guess an Uber ride there would be $3-4 (non-peak times). There is also a bus that goes there and the bus stop is an 8 minute walk away. Airbnb prohibits us from sharing personal info such as phone numbers and addresses until after booking (I have received warning before), but we are in the center of their location circle that they display on our listing page. So their map is pretty accurate. Per Airbnb's conditions, the person that reserves the booking must be the person that checks into the unit. If another person will be arriving first, that person should create an Airbnb account and request the reservation.
