The SpaceYou will enjoy a beautiful single room and bath with private entrance in a Victorian waterfront cottage, convenient to Bowdoin College and many of Maine's most spectacular shores. This is the perfect peaceful escape in which to relax and sketch, write, think, or just kick back and experience the singular beauty of the state of Maine. It is also a convenient halfway stopover if your plans take you north to Canada or south to Boston and beyond. Your room has a very comfortable single [aka twin] bed, small refrigerator and microwave and lots of antique charm. The bath has a claw-foot tub with a water view. Osprey watching and kayak rentals are available in season, but sunset over the water is a daily event year around. The gardens are yours to enjoy, as well as relaxation on the deck . Guest AccessSee above :) Interaction with Guests I live on premises and am readily available. The NeighborhoodSee above :) Getting AroundYou will need a car. Other Things to NoteThe Waratah is an old house and it is directly on the water. That combination can lead to occasional mustiness. It doesn't mean the place is dirty; it just means that it is old. I handle it by leaving the windows open, but if you think it would bother you...the Waratah probably should not be your choice.

The SpaceWe have a group of eight cottages situated in a semi-circle on about 6 acres of land - bordered on one side by the New Meadows River. There's a bench on the river bank - look for osprey, blue heron, bald eagles and sometimes a seal will follow the striped bass up the river this far. We are 12 miles from the open ocean and the river is perfect for exploring by kayak. The road at the front of our property can be busy during the day with local car traffic, but it's generally very quiet at night. My grandfather built the cottages (and house for himself and my grandmother on the same property) in the mid-to-late 40's. He had started a lobster pound across the road which had grown to become a restaurant & inn and later, under my father's management, a banquet room was added. The Inn was sold in 2004 (and is now a church) and Sue & I took over the ownership and operation of the cottages. Interaction with GuestsWe live in the house next to the cottages and are generally available at any time. Guests are welcome to stop by for information or assistance and we can also be reached by phone, email or airbnb message.

The SpaceWelcome to your home away from home! Most of our suite photos are Airbnb Verified. We had the great fortune to have an Airbnb photographer take photos of our suite and property. Please read our descriptions in their entirety. Our 488 square foot (45 sq meters) suite with private entrance, bedroom area, efficiency kitchenette (NO RANGE or FULL SIZE OVEN - see details below) and private shower bath is new, bright, airy (lots of windows and high ceilings), well-insulated and very inviting! Lovely views of the water from our property! You won't find a better value in Harpswell. Our one level suite (slight step up between rooms) with indoor gas fireplace in the bedroom is cozy and warm for the winter months. We want you to be happy, so please feel free to request anything that might make your stay more enjoyable. Coffee, tea, coffee filters, cream and basic seasonings provided. Please note that we don't have a full kitchen (best described as an efficiency kitchenette), but we have many small appliances and a kitchen sink, so you can get by fairly well with the cookware provided. The suite kitchenette area features a refrigerator, separate upright freezer, kitchen sink, microwave, countertop convection oven (with toaster feature), two coffeemakers (single serve and with coffee pot), a single state of the art induction cooktop hotplate, an electric wok, electric skillet, slow cooker, pots and pans, cooking utensils, silverware, etc. The skillet and slow cooker are available upon request. The suite has a vented propane heater with flaming logs of a woodstove that will keep you toasty warm and provide ambiance. There is a queen size bed in the bedroom and a pullout queen size couch in the living room. We also have a narrow child size single rollaway bed available for your use. (needs to be requested in advance) Both rooms have cathedral ceilings and ceiling fans. The living area has rough-hewn beams that are original to the house. The living room area has skylights, a 42 in HDTV with super expanded cable including movie channels such as HBO, Starz and Cinemax. We also provide Netflix and a dvd player (there are some dvds in the suite and many other dvds readily available -just ask). RedBox is at several locations close by. We offer wifi and an ethernet "hard wire" adapter for NetFlix or for connecting a laptop. The living and dining area has an A/C window unit and a table with four chairs. Outdoors (summer season only) we have a small communal gas grill and a large shared charcoal grill. (but no supplies for charcoal grill). Our suite is best suited to those who want to try out some of the numerous local restaurants in addition to eating in for a few simple meals. Floor length drapes provide some privacy between the bedroom area and the living room area. Realistically our suite is most ideal for a couple, however a family with one teenager or a small child should be comfortable. The suite is adjoining our home and is separated by a wall from our kitchen. The private entrance and the bedroom part of the suite are at the very back of our house. We ask that you conserve water since we have a well - great drinking water! No need to buy bottled water! No chlorine! We usually make muffins (regular or gluten-free) for our guests at some time during your stay, but we can't guarantee this. Two supermarkets are just up the road (7 minute drive - Shaw's or Walmart), so you can easily get provisions for your stay. Zach's store (2 minute drive) has an excellent selection of wine, beer, liquor, pizza and some groceries. If you want a big breakfast, we will be happy to recommend one of the local breakfast spots. And please - let us know if you need anything! We are happy to oblige! Please note that our schedules may take us away from our home at times, so we will leave instructions for entering the attached suite and be available by cellphone if you have any questions or concerns. If you need to use the pullout couch or the rollaway, please let us know in advance and we will get them ready for you. As an aside, please note that we are on a busy main road, but the suite is at the back of our house away from the road, so there is very little road noise. Our house sits on a two acre piece of property in an extremely convenient location for heading out on adventures - in this case, living on a main road is a perk. We are less than 20 minutes from several small beaches and about 30 minutes from two state park beaches. There is plenty to do year round! If you have kayaks or bicycles, bring them along! There are many public boat launches in the area and some good areas for bicycling as well, particularly the nearby former Navy base. There are also kayak rentals and arranged kayak tours available as well as sailboat, schooner, ferry and charter boat tours. Guest AccessGuests have access via their own entrance to a private attached suite with sun deck and gravel parking area. Please park in the gravel area in front of the entrance of the suite (near the fish sign) during your stay. As our guests, you can also walk around to the shared outdoor patio area with both a charcoal and a gas grill and feel free to walk anywhere outdoors on our property including across the road to our little sitting space and tidal waterfront property (see photos - marked private property). We will gladly provide a small propane grill for your use upon request. We also have pretty much everything you might need. If you are interested in a lobster dinner, you can order fresh cooked lobster and tasty seafood year- round just up the road over the bridge at Gurnet Trading Company (BYOB or buy there, outdoor and small indoor seating area - closed through March 1st). If you plan on making light meals and a full kitchen isn't a priority for you, then you will find that you will have almost all the comforts of home and very easy access to many restaurants and several grocery stores. IMPORTANT: For liability reasons, please note that we do not provide canoes, kayaks or bicycles. There are several companies that rent kayaks and paddleboards and they also offer kayaking/paddleboarding trips. Interaction with GuestsWe will most likely be available at some point during your stay to meet you and if you want to socialize, we would love to (your call)! If we aren't available during your stay, we will be readily available by cellphone to answer any questions you have. Upon your arrival, we will be happy to tell you about the local attractions, values and best kept secrets and visit with you in the common area outdoors, however we will also respect your privacy if that is your wish. We have three cats and a dog. They are not allowed in the guest suite, but you may see them or visit with them if we socialize in our screened porch. We really enjoy conversing and interacting with our guests if that is your wish, so please don't hesitate to ask us if you need to borrow anything and let us know if something isn't working properly or if there is anything that we can do to improve the suite or make your stay more enjoyable. Your satisfaction is very important to us! Always remember - if you need anything, just ask! The NeighborhoodThis area is alive and thriving all year long! Harpswell is a paradise for lobster lovers and for those who love seafood of all kinds. Unspoiled beauty abounds! Nearby Brunswick is a college town, so there's plenty to do here - lots of restaurants, several museums and beaches and trails that you can walk along every day of the year. We love our town! Harpswell (population 5,000 but definitely a little bigger in the summer) has more coastline than any other town on the East coast - 216 miles in all!! We are literally surrounded by saltwater here. We are directly across the road from the New Meadows River. This saltwater river goes out to Casco Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Our home is located midway between the fun and charming town of Brunswick and the city of Bath (The City of Ships, voted "best main street" recently) We are on Great Island in Harpswell on the way to Orr's Island and Bailey Island (all part of Harpswell). Eat out in one of our local ethnic, seafood or American unique or chain restaurants, visit the Bowdoin College campus, take in a show at Maine State Music Theatre, attend a summer music concert, do some yoga or zumba at a local studio, or drive and explore the coast. The possibilities are endless. This area is a year-round destination for enjoying Maine hospitality and scenery. Grocery stores and many shops and restaurants are within 5 to 15 minutes by car. There is a highly rated "seafood shack" (byob or buy beer and wine) with takeout (closed through March 1st) and a country store with an excellent beer, wine and alcohol selection just about 2 minutes away by car. Our location is a wonderful gateway to fun and exploration! This area is ideal for those who want to kayak, bicycle or go on leisurely hikes. Bring your kayaks, bicycles, bathing suit and walking shoes! Kayak tours offered in the area with all gear provided or you can rent kayaks and explore on your own. Harpswell and the neighboring towns of Topsham, Bath and Brunswick have many nature preserves, hiking trails, public boat launches, a riverfront bicycle trail, river and ocean views and walks. What's really great is that many of the natural scenery can be enjoyed for free - so you can plan a whole day for only the cost of your food - brown bag it, get takeout, or dine in a restaurant. There are 184 restaurants in total in the towns of Harpswell, Brunswick, Bath and Topsham according to TripAdvisor. For nature enthusiasts, get a taste of what you can see by going to the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust website. Brunswick also has Bowdoin College with Maine State Music Theatre and the International Music Festival throughout the summer. Bowdoin College also has two museums (an Arctic and an art museum) and the Chamberlain House Museum is just across the street. Bowdoin often has events and performances that are open to the public. So much to do -consignment store shopping, watching a movie at the nearby feature film movie theater or the independent movie theater or dinner and a film option at the Frontier cafe. There are three movie theaters in Brunswick - one that shows feature films is just up the road! We are just off Route 1, so we're in a great location to explore Midcoast Maine for day trips. Visit Rockland/Camden/Rockport, Wiscasset, Boothbay Harbor, Damariscotta all within an hour and 20 minutes or less drive. Intriguing Portland (with a tremendous number of restaurants, bars, museums, etc.) is an easy 35 minute drive. Augusta, Maine's capitol city, is also about 40 minutes away. Take a noontime scenic cruise of Casco Bay just down the road from us on Bailey Island. USA's #1 voted favorite place (according to Good Morning America 2014 poll) Acadia National Park is a three hour drive. Also if you are checking out Bowdoin College for your son or daughter or attending a reunion, we are less than a 15 minute drive from the campus. We have a whole basket filled with brochures, so you can put off the planning until you arrive and then comfortably explore the area. All of our guests have used our Harpswell Heritage Land Trust brochure with a map, description and directions to some amazingly beautiful places that require only an easy hike or drive to visit. There is also a small indoor heated pool (no hot tub) and fitness center at a hotel just up the road. You can purchase a pass for unlimited use for a day or a week. Getting AroundThere is no public transit to our home, so a car is a necessity and exploring the area by car will make your visit all the more memorable. Once you get here, you will find that the driving is very easy and relaxing- especially in Harpswell! The Amtrak train and the bus from Boston stop in Brunswick (15 minutes away by car). Car rental is an option. The Portland airport is 45 minutes by car or taxi. There is a bus from Portland to Brunswick, but taxi transport would need to be arranged from the airport to the bus terminal in Portland. Other Things to NotePlease note that subject to availability we prefer three night minimum rental requests for holiday weekends such as Labor Day, Columbus Day (October), Memorial Day. The summer books quickly - we have been consistently fully booked for June, July and August. In the future, we also may be requiring longer than weekend stays in peak summer months. Before you inquire about renting our suite, place make sure to set up a profile with Airbnb and tell us a little about yourself when you send us your inquiry. We're sort of picky about knowing a little about you and we want to see your photo and that you have taken the time to write a brief narrative about yourself before we will consider having you as a guest. We will leave some brochures in the suite about places to visit in the area . In addition, we will be happy to give you suggestions in person or by email/cellphone when possible. Maine has a 9% lodging tax. We have included this tax (normally paid by guests) in our price, so we will not ask you to pay it upon arrival. Therefore we don't have much "wiggle room" for making special offers in most cases.

The SpaceRelax in one of two bedrooms (one full, one queen) or a cozy living room. Cook and share a fabulous farmer's market dinner in the fully-stocked kitchen with friends. Sip a mug of locally-roasted coffee on the sun porch, and enjoy the deck and private fire pit after a long day at the beach. Enjoy classic architectural details and a fully updated bathroom. Furnishing and decor is simple, functional, and inviting. Doubling Point Cottage would make a charming getaway for a couple looking for a romantic spot on the Midcoast, a comfortable vacation cottage for a small family, or a quiet home-away-from-home for a short-term contractor. The home was built in 1920 right behind one of the most productive shipyards in the nation - it was probably built by a ship's carpenter, and is very modest while retaining many interesting architectural features. There are some odd quirks - a fairly steep staircase, tight hallways, and a bedroom door threshold right at the top of the stairs - but we find those elements charming and authentic, and we hope you do too! Ask us about multi-week and last-minute discounts! Guest AccessOther amenities include: - Wireless internet access (but relax - no television.) - Books, games, and puzzles Children's toys and books - Coffee and tea bar stocked with local blends - Outdoor fire pit and gas grill - Parking for two cars, and a small boat and trailer. Interaction with GuestsWe try to greet each guest as they arrive, so we ask for a range of expected arrival time in advance. It doesn't always work out though, so in the event that we can't meet you, we will be sure to give you good directions so you can find your way in and get settled! We welcome guests of all types and stripes. The NeighborhoodA short stroll through a quiet residential neighborhood will bring you to one of the ‘ten best maritime museums in the world', the Maine Maritime Museum. From there, you can catch the trolley to our charming walkable downtown, just a mile away. The adventurous will find two public boat launches nearby, two state parks with miles of sandy beaches less than 15 miles away, and dozens of opportunities to hike, bike, and explore. Bath and the southern Midcoast in general have really lovely communities, with walkable towns, independent communities, and a lot of emphasis on local agriculture, music, and culture. Bath shares all of these classic Maine values, and is a wonderful town to explore, or to provide a home base for further adventures! Other Things to NoteThe cottage blog and more information is available through an easy internet search of the cottage name. We are just a regular (busy!) family with a small kid, who really enjoy sharing a bit of our modest lives and hometown with travelers. This may mean that we haven't achieved hotel-level perfection or standardization... But we do our best to make everything comfortable and inviting! This is a historic house- a steep staircase and tight hallways may not be accessible for every body. Both bedrooms and the only bath are on the second floor. Ask us about multi-week and last-minute discounts!

Bath's many amenities are only steps away: an 8-minute walk to the west will bring you to the shopping center, while a 10-minute walk to the east will bring you to Bath's thriving downtown Main Street. This street includes one of Maine's best stores for cooks. The sunny kitchen will be an excellent place to experiment with the cookbooks and ingredients you may find there, and you should feel free to use herbs from the gourmet garden outside your window and the spices from the spice cabinet. Bath is truly an excellent base point for exploring the Midcoast. Opportunities for mushroom foraging, hiking, beachcombing, fishing, shopping, and many other activities abound within an easy drive, and many are within an easy walk. The NeighborhoodCalled Nequasset after Nequasset lake by Abenaki Indians, it was first settled in 1638 by Edward Bateman and John Brown. They would purchase the land in 1639 from the sachem Mowhotiwormet, commonly known as Chief Robinhood, who lived near Nequasset Falls. At Day's Ferry on the Kennebec River, Richard Hammond operated a fortified trading post. His household of 16, including servants, workmen and stepchildren, conducted a lucrative fur trade with the Indians. But in the first blow of King Philip's War in the area, on the evening of August 13, 1676, warriors ingratiated themselves into the stockaded trading post, then killed the elderly Hammond and his stepson as they returned for the night. Others were either slain and scalped or taken into captivity. Buildings were looted and burned, and the cattle slain. Nequasset was attacked during King William's War, when inhabitants were again massacred or forced to abandon their homes. It was assailed again in 1723 during Dummer's War, when the Norridgewocks and their 250 Indian allies from Canada, incited by the French missionary Sebastien Rale, burned dwellings and killed cattle. Following Governor William Dummer's peace treaty of 1725, resettlement would be slow. During the French and Indian War, on June 9, 1758, Indians raided the village, killing members of the Preble family and taking others prisoner to Quebec. This incident became known as the last conflict on the Kennebec River. Nequasset had become a district of Georgetown, but on Octob(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN), the plantation was set off and incorporated by the Massachusetts General Court, named after Woolwich, England. The peninsula was heavily wooded, providing timber for shipbuilding. It also had excellent soil for agriculture. By 1858, industries included two sawmills, two gristmills and a shipyard. By 1886, the community also produced bricks and leather. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers twice widened Upper Hell Gate on the Sasanoa River, which separates Woolwich from Arrowsic. Originally constricted by curves and ledges, which were made even more dangerous by swift currents, the half mile (0.8 kilometer) stretch was widened in 1898 to a minimum of 90 feet (27 meters), then again in 1908 to a minimum of 140 feet (40 meters) and depth of 12 feet (4 meters). The Sasanoa River now permits navigation between Bath and Boothbay Harbor. Getting AroundWhile there is no public transportation in the area, the closest grocery is in Bath, a 7 minute drive. Quaint shopping and restaurants in town or surrounding neighborhoods of Brunswick, Freeport, Portland, Wiscasset or Boothbay Harbor.
