The SpaceNOTE: See our December 2016 special offer, below in this panel, for 1) Early-bird 2017 booking discounts. And 2) consider a late-December holiday stay! Ask about rates depending on your length of stay.
"Apartment" doesn't do justice to this lovely vacation and retreat space. Guests have told us we have a real "palazzo" here, and that current photos don't do it justice. It's a private, handicap-friendly, fully equipped independent ground-floor habitat with its own entrances, patio, kitchen, laundry, all amenities--and considerate, unobtrusive landlords who are there when you need them. Artist retreats too!
The rental unit shares part of one wall with our half of the house. It has two private entrances of its own, one leading to a "Secret Garden," a dedicated guest parking area, and the quiet town road; and the other to its own patio with field and water views, and access to our Point. All the necessary independent facilities/amenities are contained within the rental unit, which comes supplied with towels, linens, full kitchen needs. There's extra sound insulation between the apartment and our downstairs, and also between it and the room above.
**NOTE: Rental rates include the post-stay cleaning fee and the 9% Maine hospitality tax we're required to collect.
** 2017 EARLY BIRD SPECIAL: so many of our guests over the past 3 years have told us our rates are so reasonable for the value provided, that we've raised them just a little as of 2017. IF YOU BOOK FOR 2017 by 12/31/16, we'll hand-adjust the 2017 cost you'll see automatically on the site, down to our current 2016 rates. Just ask when you request your 2017 booking.
And if you'd like to spend the last part of December '16 here for your holiday, please inquire. We'll work out a rate for you based on your length of stay. Guest AccessOutside your living quarters, you have access to the entire 3.5 acre property with open field, landscaped areas, and the unique wooded point with its stairway down to the sand beach of our tidal cove, and typical dramatic Maine-coast boulders and rock formations. Extraordinary opportunities for observing wildlife and birds and the intertidal zone. We do expect that guests won't walk directly around our half of the house's downstairs, for our privacy--a non-issue given the property's layout, since you won't be missing anything at all!
Check-in note: call or text us with your ETA when you have a reasonably clear idea. Night-time check-ins are fine, as long as we can anticipate how late to stay up to welcome you, or whether to make simple arrangements for you to get in to the apartment if we'll be out or asleep. We always send local directions and check-in information to guests before arrival. Interaction with GuestsWe're available when you need us, and happy to share recommendations and enthusiasms. We're very respectful of guests' privacy, and are also very happy to socialize if you like--we have some fascinating visitors from throughout the U.S. and abroad! With some we've forged continuing friendships, while other guests who come here prefer to just immerse themselves in nature, family, exploration, relaxation, and we hardly see them all week. We like to facilitate your having a no-worries good time, either way.
If you have mobility issues, we can ferry you out to the Point, by arrangement, in our golf cart.
Danielle speaks basic French (which improves with practice) and some German.
We have a descriptive list of our favorite places to eat, explore, shop, in DownEast and Acadia, and we provide that to guests before they arrive.
We have one hypoallergenic Havanese dog (17lb) on our side of the house, who's always on a leash when outdoors, and is not allowed to go into the apartment or fraternize with guests--unless they find him so charming that they insist! (Many do.) He shushes quickly once he's let us know someone is at the door; you'll hardly know he's around. Including if you have pet allergies: your hosts are both dog-allergic, and we've had our boy for 9 years with no problem. Havanese have silky hair rather than fur; non-oily, non-dandruffy skin; and don't shed. The NeighborhoodNote: 2016 is the 100th Anniversary of Acadia National Park! We're about an hour from the park's main section on Mt. Desert Island, and just half an hour from the less trafficked and just as beautiful Schoodic Point section.
Milbridge itself is a delightful small coastal town, and the gateway to the entire Bold Coast Regional Byway that extends all the way to Eastport and the Canadian border. Milbridge is the only "service town" between the small cities of Ellsworth and Machias. That means it has all the major services--supermarket, banks, Post Office, Town Offices, and local businesses, gallery, museum, etc.--conveniently located within a walkable town center. The wider neighborhood is full of geologic, natural and cultural wonders and activities. Ask us about your special interests! Getting AroundBangor International Airport, 90 minutes away, is the closest large airport. But there are smaller ones, notably the Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton, ME, about an hour from us, with regular direct flights to/from Boston and several cities in Florida. Amtrak comes to Augusta, with major-line bus service to Bangor, and local buses that ply the coast from there. Most people rent cars if they're flying or "entraining" in, but we also have many guests who make road trips from their homes in the south, midwest and Canada, scheduling interesting overnight stops along the way. There's so much to explore! Other Things to NoteWe run a small arts center, Sunrise County Arts Institute, which provides much-needed music and arts services in this area. (Your rental fees help toward SCAI's operating expenses.) 1) Would you like voice lessons or a family singing workshop while you're here? Danielle's a master teacher who also helps inspire confidence in shy singers! 2) We offer year-round Creativity Retreat vacations for individuals or small groups. Come here to work intensively on your novel, musical opus, or photo or painting portfolio. 3) This is a great location for films, photo shoots, and small-to-medium-sized special events like weddings. 4) We'll be offering eco-arts workshops and Starry Nights stargazing events.
