The nature around you is pristine, the bird life is plentiful , loons swimming well within sight, occasional seals looking for breakfast, the aroma of flowers in bloom, incredible sunsets and sunrises and the living history of this 1800's community reminding you of how life was over 100 years ago. Come take a summer yoga class or sailing lessons, golf, kayak, read, scour for beach glass, shoot a few baskets, swing on the swingset, play monopoly, sleep, rest, and restore. Bayside was founded in 1849 by the Methodist Episcopal Church in Maine. The first puchase of land was only 25 acres. The intent of the church was to have a summer recreational area where they could gather once a year for worship and spend time socially in this beautiful area of Penobscot Bay. Annually for 25 years after the original purchase, these pioneer churchmen and farmers pitched their tents under the oaks and birches they had acquired and enthusiastically worshipped God with sermons, songs and old fashioned religious fervor. As years passed , the tents first occupied by the worshipers gave way to wooden cottages built of hemlock and native pine. The first of these cottages was built in 1869. In 1875, the complexion of the community changed greatly by the constuction of a hotel called the Wesleyan Grove House. This major project launched the campground on its fate as a summer resort in additon to its religious mission. As more acreage was purchase, building lots were being sold at prices from $5.00 to $15.00. By the end of 1879, 40 cottages had been built and many more were to come. Ultimately, over 300 cottages were built and most of them are still here today! By the 1880s, Bayside was in full swing as a summer resort. Many steam ships would come from as far away as Boston. One report mentions as many as seven steamers coming to the landing dock (still here today) in a single day. The report goes on to say that 250 Hampden belles and their beaux came down Tuesday on the steamer "Clifford". Bayside was the place to be! In the 1890's more cottages had been constructed and several retail shops were also developed to handle the needs of hundreds of visitors. This was the era of clam bakes, picnics, hay rides, firemen's musters, band concerts and excursions. The first hotel had burned down but a new and larger one was constucted. Even a bowling alley was constructed (which is one of our rentals) along with parks, ballfield, tennis courts, etc. In 1916, one of the wealthy property owners, constucted a 9 hole golf course and country club. This club, the Northport Golf Club, is still in existance today with many Bayside residents and renters enjoying this facility. The course is public and tee times are not difficult to obtain. The glory of the late 1800's is no longer present in Bayside, however, the character of that old community still lies in the architechture and the people who come here year after year. Many cottages have been owned by the same families for generations and there is a stong community involvement by those owners to keep Bayside as a place "preserved in time". Today there are no commercial activities in Bayside, other than a small real estate office and a few resident artists. The closest store is a mile away. The golf course is still active and a yacht club is present offering sailing lessons to children and an occasional adult. There are four lovely parks, one of them with basketball court and playground and a large dock for swimming and fishing. The rocky shore provides opportunities for beach coaming, swimming, or launching your kayak. Many sailboats are moored on the Bay offering a beautiful backdrop to the island in the distant and Blue Hill mountain in the horizon. On real clear days, the mountains of Acadia are the distant shadows. What Bayside offers today are glorious morning walks along the shore roads of Bayside. The nature around you is pristine, the bird life is plentiful, loons swimming well in sight, occasional seals looking for breakfast, the odors of flowers in bloom, incredible sunsets and sunrises, and the living history of this 1800's community reminding you of how life was over 100 years ago.

Deep in the heart of Bayside is this classic Maine cottage. The 90+ year old LUV cottage was updated in 2014 for a perfect mix of old cottage and new cottage. The original cottage was built as a simple one room cottage with a single bedroom overhead. Over the years, a kitchen, laundry room, first floor bedroom, dining room, and two screened porches were added. While completing foundation work for all these areas, a section of the orignal front porch was enclosed to make a new mudroom, a screened porch was converted to a bunk room, and the deck off of the laundry room was converted to a bar-b-que porch area complete with ginerbread railing. The cottage boasts a queen bedroom and a new low-profile bath/tub combination in the bathroom, and a laundry room off of the kitchen for easy single floor living. It also includes a classic upstairs cottage bedroom with half bath, and a bunk room off of the master bedroom for the kids or grandkids. The screened porch has been completely redone. It functions as the family room, dining room, and fun center. Inside there is a living area with a futon and TV and a new formal dining area with a 3-in-1 table that offers formal dining and also bumper pool or cards. There is some new wicker porch furniture planned for the 2015 summer season! The house has a washer and dryer, internet, and DirecTV, but the best part is that you are seconds from the wharf, dock, boats, playground and the primary park in Bayside. The base daily, weekly, and monthly rates are for off-season rates. The rates ramp up and down around the peak season in July/August. $100 cleaning fee for more than 2 people. The cleaning fee is waived for a couple. The monthly rate is a flat rate for four weeks in a row with the week beginning at the start of the week listed. The cottage is over a hundred years old and has undergone a multi-year improvement. The renovation project is loaded up on baysidemainecottagedotcom. There are a lot of other pictures there. LUV Cottage is in the historic district of Bayside Maine and approximately 700 feet from the village wharf in the Penobscot Bay complete. The wharf comes complete with swim float with lifeguard and a dingy dock. Rental moorings are available along with a town beach for storing your kayaks. The Space"Vartakooin Doone" (which means 'The Pink House' in Armenian) was built in 1890. It is one of dozens of very pretty little cottages in the village of Bayside, with fine views across Penobscot Bay. The cottage is bright, filled with light and full of charm, with antique furniture, local artists' paintings, a lovely porch and a delightful deck off the main bedroom. The modern kitchen is fully equipped: stove/oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge/freezer. Olive oil, salt, pepper, spices and other condiments are available for your use. Bath and beach towels are provided, as are bed linen and soap. Please note the sleeping arrangements: two bedrooms with full/double beds and one bedroom with a single/twin bed. Guest AccessYou'll have access to the whole house and yard, including the grill in the garden shed. Interaction with GuestsUsually we'll be there to welcome to you. If not, our local representative will be there or arrangements will be made for you to pick up the keys. The NeighborhoodBayside started as a religious camp in the 1800s and gradually grew into a beautiful little village of gingerbread cottages. It's the sort of place where families come back year after year. Friendships are forged and renewed every summer. There are no businesses in the village itself. Social life revolves around porches, the parks, the dock and the Yacht Club, which must be the humblest, most laid-back yacht club on the eastern seaboard. Getting AroundThe village is a mile or so off US-1. There's a convenience store about 10 minute's walk from the cottage and a diner 15-20 minutes walk away. Supermarkets and other shops are in Belfast, about 4 miles away. Antique shops abound, all along US-1 and in the towns and villages. A car is definitely not necessary in the village but is necessary to visit the many beautiful spots nearby. We have our own parking spot right in front of the cottage. Other Things to NotePlease note the 15mph speed limit in the village!

The SpaceThe house is separated into 3 sections. The barn has been renovated into an antique shop, center of the building is the original house with 3 bedrooms and and a bath which is what you are renting. A queen air mattress is available and can be set up in the living room if you need an extra bed. There is only the one bathroom on the second floor and steep stairs to climb to get to it! Thought I should mention the steps! The space has great light from the floor to ceiling windows across the back and the view is fabulous. There's a deck across the back of the house, a grill for your use. The house is circa 1810 with the usual steep stairs of a Federal cottage. Also, the house does not have a bathroom on the first floor. It's a cozy house with small but comfortable bedrooms...empty drawers to store clothes and ample closet space. As were so many of these old houses, it's located close to the main road so there is the distant sound of waves breaking on one side and some muffled traffic noise on the other. Guest AccessPlenty of parking. You access the house through the antique shop door and the mud room. Feel free to brows the antique shop, walk down to the water's edge and explore the little beach off to the left. Interaction with GuestsI'm not always available to greet you and answer questions, but will give you directions and leave instructions for the house, plus we can talk by phone. Please get in touch if you have questions about the booking. I try to leave current brochures about the area and events. While guests stay in the house, I usually stay in the attached apartment. The NeighborhoodThis little neighborhood was originally called Duck Trap way back when Maine was still part of Massachusetts. Lots of early architecture to enjoy. Writers and painters love the area with its solitude and light. There's a small museum in town just off Route One on RT 173 (road opposite the ferry). It's on the right maybe 500' or so, set back off the road. Open on certain days in the summer. The "Doctor Porter's House" (my house) as it was called for decades is pictured in it's original form in one of historical books about the town. Circa 1810. Most people simply refer to it now as the Painted Lady. Quick drive to Lincolnville beach to enjoy the public beach, restaurants and a few local boutiques plus the nearby museum. GREAT PIZZA at the Beach Store for a fast meal. Camden and Belfast are both about 9 miles away with great shops, galleries and waterfront activities. I"ll try to keep you updated with current literature from the local Chamber of Commerce. Getting AroundThere is plenty of parking. The house is easy to find since it's on the main road, however, it's a rural location so a car is necessary. The house is on the right on Route One, 1.3 miles north of Lincolnville Beach. The Painted Lady Antique sign designates your arrival. Other Things to NoteHiking, boating, sight seeing, loads of galleries in the area and a small beach. There's a lake ten minutes away with warm water if the bay's too cold. Mountain climbing and trails to hike! In the winter, the Camden Snow Bowl for skiers with it's famous toboggan run which hosts the national championship...great weekend fun! Bring cross country skis and enjoy the area. Lots of water to enjoy; the bay, nearby lakes, Duck Trap River, boating, etc. I have brochures for most of the activities.
