The SpaceThe guest bedroom is large enough for two and includes a dresser and small closet, along with two side tables (one designed with decoupage) and reading lamps. The full bathroom (shower + tub) features ample storage, a sitting bench, and a lovely "stained glass" window.
The living room has a comfortable futon that opens into a full-size bed. There's a TV with local channels (no cable), and the WiFi is strong and reliable.
The kitchenette doubles as my craft room, so there's a possibility I may need to drop in, but I'll let you know if that's the case. There's also a washer/dryer downstairs, which you may use. Guest AccessThere is a private entrance into the guest area, located on the side of our house past the driveway. Just inside the guest entrance door, a short flight of stairs takes you down to the guest suite & shared laundry room.
Feel free to play in our large back yard. Interaction with GuestsWe're a married couple with two little boys (ages 2 and 4). We live upstairs from the guest space, but we do come downstairs to use the shared laundry room located just outside of the entrance to the guest space. Our 2 year old and 4 year old are usually up around 6am. We do our best to keep them quiet in the morning and whenever guests are here at our house, but you will probably hear them throughout the day. The 2 year old goes to bed by 7:30 pm, and the 4 year old is in bed by 8:30, so we ask guests to keep noise down starting at that time.
I am a stay at home mom. My husband works during the day - but is home at night and on weekends. While we do give guests their personal space, we enjoy meeting new people and would like to spend some time chatting with you. One of us is usually around if you need anything, including area recommendations. The NeighborhoodRiverdale was originally part of the 800 acre property purchased in 1801 by Henri Joseph Stier. He built the Riversdale Mansion which still stands today as the Riversdale Historic Museum.
Today, Riverdale is a up and coming neighborhood. There are several neat features. Our house is a 15 minute walk to the MARC train stop, and a 20 minute walk (just about a mile) to the College Park Metro stop. We are a short walk to the M Square Research Park, USDA , and NOAA buildings. We have a Farmers Market every Thursday from 3-7, where you can buy your dinner and listen to live music. We are also located near a large sports park, with a trail for walking and biking.
Guests who are interested in staying with us mainly for going into Washington DC often give us a lower than 5 star rating because we are further away than they would like. While we do not wish to discourage people from staying with us, we suggest that people
1) Have a car OR like to walk/bike (if you have a bike with you)
2)Consider staying with someone who is closer to the city if you really want a shorter commute.
We are out in the suburbs, so are great for people who want to visit the city but want to stay in a neighborhood. Getting AroundWe strongly recommend that our guests have a car, or enjoy walking. Our house is a 20 minute walk (or 10 minute drive) from College Park Metro (green line).
***As of Dec 14, 2015 - for guests driving between my house & College Park Metro Stop - the shorter route that I normally send my guests is closed for construction until around April of 2017. The new route between my house and the College Park Metro stop is a 10 minute drive.****
From there, it is about a 20 minute ride into DC for access to museums, theatre, etc.
Free street parking in our neighborhood is always available. We're adjacent to a large park with access to miles of biking/walking trails, and close to a forest preserve, making it the ideal location for visitors who want to get outdoors.
We're also close (by car) to plenty of great restaurants and shopping. Grocery stores include Giant, Yes! Organic Market, and Town Center Market, as well as farmers markets most days of the week. Hyattsville, with its numerous dining options (including the popular Busboys and Poets), is just a couple of miles away. There are also lots of delicious delivery and take-out options. And our new town center is up and coming, featuring Riverdale Bikram Yoga Studio and Shine Massage.
Our neighborhood is older with some refurbished homes. We're still in the process of renovating ours, but since we started with the basement, it's the nicest part of our house! Hope to see you soon!
