You can find organic grocery stores, a nice farmer's market, bike stores, and the people in Takoma Park are incredibly nice and proud of their neighborhood. Takoma Park has a wonderful city main shopping strip with mom-and-pop stores and a variety of restaurants. It is perfect for those who like to walk around, look at stores, and try organic/natural food stores and restaurants. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: 1) Are you close to museums and downtown DC? Yes! We are only a few minutes away on the metro (subway). We live in a safe and residential suburb with the convenience of being so close to downtown. Be advised that from the metro you have to walk to the house or take a bus. It is a nice and safe walk but people who do not like to walk won’t do well staying in our house (DC museums involve also a lot of walking so these people won’t be happy in DC anyway). 2) How many people live in the house? This floor has 3 rooms. You will be sharing the bathroom with 2 other rooms. Depending on when you stay you could be the only one in the floor and get a full apartment for the price of a room. However, you must come to stay with us with the expectation that you will be sharing the common areas (bathroom, kitchen, and dining room) with others. 3) Do you provide breakfast? We do not provide breakfast. 4) Is my child counted as an adult when making the reservation? Yes, your child is counted as one person. If you are traveling with children please email me first. 5) Do you have pets? There are no pets in this floor but the house is not suitable for people with severe pet allergies. 6) Why do I have to pay for a security deposit? We have been hosts for a long time and have suffered many loses. The deposit guarantees that guests pay for the damages they do while at our home. If you are careful and take care of our things, the deposit is fully refunded when you leave the house. 7) Where can I do laundry? There are Laundromats and dry cleaners nearby. As an added convenience we offer to do your laundry for a small fee ($ 10 per load), but we do encourage that you do it on your own. 8) Am I responsible to buy my personal toiletries and food? Yes. Guests are responsible to bring their own personal toiletries and food. There various stores nearby. We ask everyone to be considerate and respect other guests (and hosts!) personal possessions.

The NeighborhoodWe live in Takoma Park, Maryland. It is one of the most progressive, eclectic suburban communities in the United States. Some have called it "Berkley East" in that it has been an enclave that has been politically and socially active and welcoming to all people from every strata of the world for many decades. In short... it is a cool little, enlightened, culturally diverse town on the border of N.W. (URL HIDDEN) Maryland, that offers a unique mixture and excellent quality of life experience. Getting AroundYou can ride a bike from Takoma Park to downtown D.C. in 30-40 minutes. Takoma Park Metro Station is a ten minute bus ride from our property. The SpaceThis is a recently remodeled finished basement with a private bath and washer and dryer. The immaculate bathroom is stocked with clean towels, shampoo and conditioner. An ironing board and iron are at your disposal as is a coffee maker, mini fridge and microwave. The bedroom has a comfortable queen bed, and a small TV (no cable) attached to a Roku so you can stream Netflix. Because of the small size of our kitchen we don't include access to it or the rest of the house but the room itself is very spacious. Guest AccessAccess to the room is through the backyard and backdoor so you will have more privacy coming and going. We are a very pet friendly household and have a two dogs and a cat (they are not allowed access to the room). Interaction with GuestsWe like our guests to have their privacy, but are happy to answer any questions you might have! The NeighborhoodWe love our Silver Spring neighborhood! We live on a quiet street with very friendly neighbors. It's all single family homes with lots of trees and a creek over the other side of the road. Parking on the street directly in front of the house is never an issue. Getting AroundWe are approximately 25 minutes from downtown DC by car and a short bus ride to the Silver Spring metro station. Other Things to NoteWe have three dogs and although I work from home and am generally there to monitor them, they do bark when a stranger enters the house and they don't settle down right away. We have set up the space so a baby gate separates them from our guests as they enter and exit the house. They are doing their job, keeping us all safe, so we don't mind so much and they are friendly. :)

The SpaceAbout your escape: you'll sleep in freshly washed 1000-thread Egyptian cotton sheets. The ceiling fans and central air keep the home cool in the summer; the an electric fireplace in the winter gives you that extra cozy feel. Wake up at your leisure, enjoy a cup of fresh coffee from the device of your choice – stove top espresso maker, coffee maker, or French press. Head for a morning run on Sligo Creek trail, or pick up a Washington Post newspaper from the store downstairs and read it on the patio. At night, enjoy a stroll through the downtown of Takoma Park – check out some live music at The Republic or enjoy a beer at the local bar, Olive Lounge. Perhaps you're tired and want to call it an evening early. Enjoy a night watching the 46 inch living room flat screen or maybe veg out in the King sized bed to catch up on Netflix. What the space offers: - Entire apartment, including the living, dining, kitchen, bath, patio and bedrooms - Two bedrooms (one with a King bed, the other with a Queen) and a double pull-out couch - One bathroom with a full bath and shower - Plush towels, travel sized toiletries and freshly washed sheets - Newly renovated kitchen with a coffeemaker, dishwasher, gas stove, pots, pans, dishes, etc - Wireless internet, but no cable service. Both TVs are able to stream Amazon Prime, Netfix and Hulu using your personal account information. Located on the 6th floor in a quiet condo building, the entrance to the building is secured and guests will be given a key fob. Guest AccessYou will have access to large laundry room in the building (fee per wash/dry). While the home has two flat screen TVs, they are not connected to cable. Both TVs are able to stream Amazon Prime, Netfix and Hulu using your personal account information The dining area, kitchen and outside balcony are available for use. In the King bedroom, one full dresser is available for use. In the Queen room, you have access to the full closet space. There is also a double pull out couch in the living room, if needed. Interaction with GuestsI value your privacy but also want you to feel comfortable and at home! If I am not in the area, or on work travel, I will introduce you to my friend who will make sure you are settled in and help resolve anything that needs resolving... The NeighborhoodWith its artsy, hippie vibe and great live music, it's a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of DC life. Organic shops, cooperatives, weekly farmers market throughout the year, and fantastic independently owned restaurants are a breath of fresh air. This is quite a green area, both figuratively and literally. Takoma Park's downtown is a single block, with only independent businesses --some of them charming and quirky--with the vibe of an "urban village". The apartment is also nearby to the Takoma Park branch of Montgomery College. Getting to downtown Washington, DC and attractions like The National Mall, Smithsonian Museums and the National Gallery, Union Station, and the National Zoo is a snap. Getting AroundDriving? I have free guest parking. No problem. Biking? Secure bike storage available in the condo; Capital Bikeshare across the street for daily bike rentals Walking? Great! Sligo Creek trail is nearby, and all Takoma shops are within walking distance. The metro is a short .9 mile away or you can also hop on one of the buses from my apartment to the Metro if you don't feel like walking. The metro will shuttle you to downtown DC in 15 minutes. I am near the Takoma stop of the Metro's Red Line (.9 mile walk or quick bus ride from the apartment). The bus stop literally outside my front door, and takes 10 minutes to arrive to the metro station, then it is a 10-20 minute metro ride to the downtown area. The bus costs $1.80 and the metro costs $2-4 depending on distance and time of day. The bus runs every 10-20 minutes every day until midnight, and the metro runs until 1am on the weekends. Although National or BWI Airports are the easiest, there is public transportation to Takoma Park available from all three of the area's airports. Supershuttle vans are a more expensive, but quicker option, as are taxis. Other Things to NoteFor guests staying longer than 4 nights, I've already included a plant-watering discount for giving my plants a quick shot of water :). I do not wash sheets or towels during your stay. Please use the washer/dryers on the 2nd floor at your convenience. If you're interested in a long-term stay, perhaps for an internship, professional training, or fellowship, you are likely to find this central location well-suited to your needs. I'm sure you'll find both your room and the entire house comfortable and convenient for study, relaxation, and exploring downtown DC and Silver Spring.

Room is clean, sunny and nicely furnished, with space for your clothes. You share a large bathroom, but have a sink of your own. You have some kitchen use- help yourself to coffee and tea in the morning. The neighborhood has been dubbed "the Berkeley of the East" for it's charm, trees and progressive citizens. There are restaurants and shops in the town center, which is walkable and also near Metro. Guest Access1/4 acre garden and tree house and hammock. A commuter bicycle and helmet for you to use gratis. For stays of a week or more, laundry facilities. You are welcome to use the kitchen when I'm not in it- we work it out! Interaction with GuestsIf you need help, I'm a 30-year resident of D.C. The house is casual, and we can interact as much or as little as you like. The NeighborhoodTakoma Park is a unique neighborhood in Washington. It spans the District line, and has a mix of both urban and older sub-urban features. Begun as a utopian community in the 1800's, This town on the Metro line 6 miles from the White House still keeps it's historically quirky, liberal and artistic personality while embracing smart growth urban infill. It's a nice place to poke around after days in the city-- and close to Silver Spring downtown, home to AFI and Discovery Channel headquarters. Getting AroundMetro is an easy walk of 4 blocks. Buses to Silver Spring and College Park are one block away. Capital City Bikeshare rental bikes are three blocks away (but you can borrow a bike from me). Mostly all of Takoma Park itself is walkable from this house. Other Things to NoteBluegrass is practiced in a separate studio from the house most Tuesdays.

The SpaceYour rooms have a private entrance and a view into the spacious backyard. The space can comfortably fit two people. In a pinch, we could throw a mat on the floor and fit in a child or young adult. Guest AccessGuests have access to the kitchen, the full bathroom upstairs, the laundry room, and the trampoline. Interaction with GuestsAs you wish, we enjoy visiting with guests when we are home and available. You would have a private entrance to your two back rooms and half bath, so you could choose to come and go as you wish. You could stay without any interaction with our family (except, perhaps, when you pass through the house to use the shower upstairs or use the shared kitchen), or you are welcome to engage with us if we are around and available. We recently hosted a long-term guest on a medical residency whom we rarely saw because he often showered and left before 6 am and arrived home after 6 pm after eating dinner out. On the other hand, we hosted a couple who made a point of engaging with us. We are comfortable with both. The NeighborhoodTakoma Park has a reputation as "Azalea City" and one of the most liberal cities on the east coast. It hosts a wonderful food co-op, terrific restaurants ((website hidden), (website hidden)) and several core members of the Obama administration. Getting AroundTo get to downtown DC, you can walk a mile or catch the 16 bus to the Takoma Park Metro (red line), which will take you straight into DC. You are welcome to park in our driveway; however, it is a bit steep and some drivers feel intimidated pulling into the driveway from the busy road. Also, if your car is not small enough to fit on the side of our swagger wagon, we may have to navigate who parks in front and back based upon schedules. Other Things to NoteNote you may hear young footsteps before their (fingers crossed) 8:30 bedtime. Our three kids include: Levi, 8; Sophia, 10; and Riley, 13. We also have a dog, Flow (1.5 years), and 2 kittens.

The SpaceThis in-law suite is on the ground floor of a three story house in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood in Takoma Park. It's bright and comfortable with a full bathroom, washer and drier, large flat screen TV with cable (premium channels) and a refrigerator. Guest AccessGuests can enter and exit on their own through a private entrance on the patio, and are welcome to use the kitchen for breakfast, coffee and tea. We're a family with teenage kids, so it gets a bit hectic in the kitchen at dinnertime, but if you're willing to jump in, you're welcome to access it! Interaction with GuestsWe are both international human rights activists and travel quite a bit for work, so one of us is often on the road. We're friendly and love to meet new people when we're not running around or carpooling kids to soccer and lacrosse games, but the self-sufficient guest is much appreciated! The NeighborhoodLovely tree-lined street, amazing neighbors, backs up into Opal Daniels Park and close to Sligo Creek Park. Getting AroundWe are a 10-15 minute walk to the Takoma metro and charming Old Town Takoma, or a take a ride on bus right at the end of our street. Our house backs up onto a public park, and Sligo Creek Parkway is right at the bottom of our street, with great bike and walking trails. Other Things to NoteWe are a nonsmoking, working family with kids in school so prefer people who are quiet and respectful of the family setting.

The SpaceThis room is located in the basement with its own rear access in case of emergency. While there is a nice seating area with 2 loveseats and a TV around the corner from the room, the downstairs also houses 1/ the laundry room 2/ the heater room and 3/ the storage of linens and supplies for the house. The bathroom is on the main floor, not on the same floor as this room, so you might want to bring slippers/flip flops and a bathrobe (or you can use the terry one provided) for trips to the shower. Guest AccessHowever, that being said, you do have access to the kitchen, living room, dining room, back porch and yard. Interaction with GuestsI also live in the home so am available in person or via text, well, not 24/7 but at least 18/7. Getting Around15 minute walk to the Takoma Metro station on the Red Line. 2 minute walk to bus stop to Silver Spring for AIRP classes, film, restaurants, etc. 15 minute walk to downtown Takoma to restaurants, post office, Farmer's Market, gift shops and more. Other Things to NoteI love hearing the kids sometimes playing during the day and the quiet at night. It's sunny yet full of trees. Sidewalks take you to downtown Takoma Park and the Farmer's Market on Sundays, the Republic restaurant on weekends, and the 7-11 when you need a donut. The library is around the corner and Community Printing will make that report you need look beautiful. Cheaper than Staples. However, you can use the house wireless printer for printing tickets. Just give me a heads up.
