Interaction with GuestsI can help with dining recommendations, and offer suggestions for local sites. Other Things to NoteMagnolia Beach offers public access to the ocean, with sand, rocks, occasional sea weed, and even some shady trees. But it is not nearly as "grand" a beach as Good Harbor Beach, about 3 miles away, or Singing Beach in Manchester by the Sea. The large expanse of beach contiguous with Magnolia Beach is private, although the owners seem to tolerate walkers on their way to the public lands on the other side (Ocean Lawn, etc.).

"Manchester By the Sea" the movie (released in 2016), was filmed in that town, which is a short 10 minute drive.

The SpaceBuilt in the 1800s, Malt Hill, perched on 25 acres of oceanfront land, is one of the last great Cape Ann Gold Coast estates. The Shell Grotto is one of three apartments in Malt Hill's carriage house, which was completely updated and renovated by my family. It's called the Shell Grotto because when we redid the walls, we created mosaics in the plaster using local shells. You can see some of our work in the photos. Guest AccessGuests in the Shell Grotto share a driveway and parking with other carriage house guests, and also have shared use of the estate's pool, fire pit, hot tub, beach and tennis court. Please note that in order to access the space, you must travel down a path with granite stairs that people with limited mobility may find challenging. Interaction with GuestsI live nearby and am only a phone call away. There are two property managers on site to help out, and my mom lives in the main house up the hill. She's often about and will probably say hi, if she isn't working. The NeighborhoodMalt Hill is right on the town line dividing Beverly from Manchester-by-the-Sea. Beverly Farms has some lovely restaurants and bakeries, including Half Baked (best doughnuts, cupcakes and coffee), Vidalia's (epic sandwiches), Cygnet (fancier lunch and dinner spot), and Hale Street Tavern (Wednesday Wing Night and great sushi). Of course, there's a Dunkin' Donuts as well. Manchester-by-the-Sea's town center and Crosby's, our local market, is about three miles away, an easy bike ride or quick trip in the car. Manchester also has excellent dining opportunities: Foreign Affairs (amazing raw oysters, fancy cocktails), Cala's (casual dining and yet another wing night), Beach Street Cafe (delicious, simple diner food), and Christo's Coffee Cup. Beverly Farms has a stop on the MBTA Commuter Rail, so if you want to take a jaunt into Boston and not worry about parking, it's a 35 minute trip to North Station. Getting AroundThe MBTA commuter rail has a station in Beverly Farms, about a mile away from the estate. From there, you can access nearby Gloucester, Salem, Rockport, and Boston (North Station). Many of our guests choose to bring cars because the area is full of beautiful scenic drives, but a car is not required. The area is frequented by many cyclists and the two nearby towns are each within a few minutes' bike ride. Other Things to NoteWe live on site at the top of the hill (you can't see the house from the carriage house), so you'll often see us coming and going but you don't need to interact unless you want to.

The SpaceWe call this space "Henry's" because Malt Hill was a spot Henry James, the author, used to frequent. We renovated it a few years ago, completely updating the kitchen, refinishing the floors and putting in a new bathroom. We've also decorated it with some of our great uncle's paintings--he was the artist behind the iconic "Dick, Jane and Spot" books for young readers. Henry's is full of sunlight because it faces east/west, and the private deck means that the pond is the first thing you see when you go out the door. Please note that this unit is only accessible by climbing a number of stairs, so guests with limited mobility will most likely have trouble getting up and down. Guest AccessGuests have access to the estate's shared pool, hot tub, tennis court, and private beach. There are many walks to take around the grounds, which include protected estuarine areas and forested land. My mom is an avid gardener, and much of the property contains her award-winning gardens. Interaction with GuestsI am a phone call or text away, and there are property managers on site to help with immediate issues. The SpaceThis boathouse was once the studio for renowned marine artist Frank Knox Morton Rehn in the late 1800's. The main house itself is one of the few remaining historic buildings in Magnolia, dating back to the mid 1800's. The house was once the ticket office for the steam ferry that ran between Gloucester and Boston. A long winter spent renovating has resulted in a historic gem with all the comforts of modernity. Guest AccessThere is a gas grill, grilling tools, outdoor furniture and a washer and dryer (in the main house). Interaction with GuestsI will be around to answer questions and will be sitting out watching the ocean sunsets from the house or pier! The NeighborhoodMagnolia is an amazing neighborhood not just for its beautiful beach and ocean views but especially because of the friendly locals! We have small boutiques, upscale food, a well-stocked corner store, a local pub and even a Dunkin Donuts! Getting AroundWe are a 4-minute drive to two different trains stations: Manchester-By-the-Sea and Gloucester. I can usually provide a shuttle for picking up or dropping off guests. There are also local cab companies if I am not available.

The SpaceA plate of hand dipped, dark chocolate coated strawberries awaits your arrival! The kitchen is equipped with a mini fridge, a toaster oven, a stove top with two burners, a keurig machine, and a microwave. If you like to cook in, just ask and we will place a portable oven there for your visit, so you can bake or broil. There are raincoats and umbrellas for your use during rainy weather. Many brochures on local activities and restaurants. Mini ironing board and iron. Beach chairs and beach blankets, and small picnic coolers. Outdoor chairs if you want to sip your coffee outdoors, listen to the birdsong and watch the squirrels play. Reading materials including magazines and books in the reading corner. A dehumidifier for those lazy hazy humid days in August. WORTHY TO NOTE: on a dead end street! No traffic! * after guests very kindly made us aware that our wi-fi was not adequately covering the whole apartment space, we resolved the issue by adding an extender. When you book you will then have access to your network name and password. Guest AccessYou'll have full use of the in-law apartment downstairs. It's YOUR home for the duration of your stay. Get to your private entrance by walking along the path in front of the property-just follow the slate stones to the left of the front door to the house. Interaction with GuestsWe will be available to greet the majority of our guests, just to say a quick hello, give you a brief orientation to your space, and answer any questions you might have. If we aren't available we will make other arrangements with you beforehand. We will provide you with our cell phone numbers so you can text us with any questions if we aren't on the property. We will completely respect your privacy, and won't be knocking at your door while you stay here. We do encourage you to please knock on our front door as often as you need with questions, for advice, or any other needs we might be able to assist you with ! It's our pleasure, we love it here and want you to love it too. :) The NeighborhoodMorning birds singing guaranteed, peaceful surroundings, always cooler than the rest of the community on hot summer days in "The Cove", direct walking and biking outlet via Salem Path which runs along the front of our property leading to a gorgeous coastal walk or bike ride along Shore Road with the ocean on your left (just keep bearing left after exiting the property via Salem Path, and take the dirt road), pier jumping off of the locally renowned "Magnolia Pier" at high tide, complete with a large float you can swim to if you survive-(it's NOT for the faint of heart or just for kids only), sailboats drifting by in the distance, take a walk up the path found at the far side of Magnolia Beach up to "The Great Lawn" at Coolidge Reservation ( go left at the end of that path), or along Clarke Pond (turn right at the end of that path). "Norman's Woe" from the famous Longfellow poem "The Wreck of the Hesperus" is just up the street. A 5 minute walk from your apartment is the entry to the wooded path leading to beautiful Rafe's Chasm (exit the cove onto Hesperus, turn right and you'll see it marked on the right) where you can fish or just climb around and explore the cliffs and the pristine active tide pools. For the young, extremely agile and adventurous you can persist with climbing over the precarious coastal rocks to actually see the chasm itself. (climb left and be careful) If you look to the right at the end of the wooded path, you will get a full view of Strawberry Cove. Even if you don't see the chasm, it's worth a walk down there. Great place to read , get some sun, and just enjoy the majesty of the ocean! Or watch local fishermen cast off! One half mile up the street is Hammond Medieval Castle, which gives tours. Stage Fort Park, on the ocean, reachable by bike or car (or a 2.2 mile walk) is nearby , you will pass it when you head into the heart of this maritime community...make sure to find their tiny crescent "half moon" beach (hint:it's tucked in and down, after a BIG rock) which looks like a staged movie set, have an ice cream, a burger, fried clams, a hot dog or barbecued chicken at "The Cupboard" opened ONLY in summer months. If you get that far, walk down to the Boulevard and over the Cut Bridge to see the Fisherman's Memorial, a famous landmark. Gloucester is the oldest seaport in the country! Getting AroundThere is a Gloucester Harbor Water Shuttle available if you would like to get out and about on the water...some folks like to bring their bikes...or rent one from Gloucester Bike Rental on Rogers Street. Other Things to NoteWe own a 5 year old mellow and quiet black female lab named ANNA who ALWAYS stays with us in our part of the home, does not roam the property freely, and is about the sweetest canine you would ever meet. She never is allowed in the apartment even when there are no guests. You MIGHT hear her bark once or twice when she hears you drive up...she's just letting us know you are here. After that, she's not a barker. You will meet her only if you insist! Also, the ocean can't be viewed from the perspective of your apartment, only from the second and third floors of the property.

The SpaceThis is a very large house with lots of room for you to stretch out and relax. The rooms on offer were originally the servants' quarters... on 2nd floor, the bed room bigger than the sitting room, and a private bath, with a separate staircase from the 1st floor kitchen. You get the best ocean breezes in these rooms, since they face south to the sea, just 2 blocks away. Guest AccessFeel free to use the large living room, where the TV is located, the library, the piano, and the grounds outside. Interaction with GuestsI can offer suggestions for restaurants and local activities of all sorts. The large expanse of beach contiguous with Magnolia Beach is private, although the owners tolerate walkers on their way to the public lands on the other side (Ocean Lawn, etc.).
