The SpacePlease note: we communicate through the Airbnb platform (either through a computer or with the Airbnb mobile app on a smart phone). If this is a problem for you, please book elsewhere.
We have designed the space to be comfortable, gracious and welcoming to those who work in the arts and humanities and who normally may not be able to afford a high end boutique hotel. We offer a more gracious experience than the high-end hotels in the area with better views, in a quieter, more private, neighborhood. And we offer this at half the price. We do this because this is how we like to travel. Our space is private, tasteful, well appointed, down-to-earth and comfortable.
Linens are fresh, clean, good quality and coordinated. Kitchen is well equipped and stocked with basic condiments.
Renovated and restored, mid-century modern style. Sustainable design, vintage 70's, Scandanavian-modern influenced with some country touches. All carefully chosen, with contemporary improvements where extra comfort is needed - floating bamboo floors, wide selection of vintage and contemporary coffee making equipment, blue tooth speaker, excellent wifi.
Two beds only. One full, one queen. Guest AccessThe apartment encompasses the second story of our 100 year-old house. If you are new to Airbnb, please do your research on the area and read our listing. We are not a hotel. This is more like borrowing a friend's apartment - - very personal.
We have recently installed a book-nook in the small bedroom, we find it charming and hope you will too.
Although we do expect you to be reasonably quiet, the suite is well removed from the other apartments in the house and has both the room and the sound space to practice acoustic instruments, (if you're here as a musician for Tanglewood or Bang on a Can). It is entirely private.
Guests have the whole apartment and one attached porch for their exclusive use.
Check-in anytime after 5:00 p.m. Please bear in mind, we are on Eastern Daylight Time, when you send a message, it rings through on our phones. We are generally asleep between the hours of midnight and eight a.m. EDT. Please do not message us between the hours of midnight and 8:00 a.m Eastern Daylight Time (Unless, God forbid, you have done something catastrophic in the apartment.)
Otherwise, we are always available via the Airbnb mobile app to answer any questions or concerns. Interaction with GuestsSometimes we meet our guests but we are independent and expect you are too - that is why we offer a self-check-in.
Arrive at your leisure. You will receive instructions for entering the apartment at 5:00 p.m. on the day of your arrival. We are always available through the Airbnb app on your phone. Save the voice calls for your mother. The NeighborhoodThe house is built into the side of the mountain. The neighborhood surrounds one of two ascents to the summit of Mt. Greylock. Mt. Greylock offers 70 miles of hiking trails. There are many others in the area, the brochures in the suite are a good starting place for your hiking plans. There are too many options to list here.
Do you want to come to North Adams? We are in North Adams. If you want to go to Lenox, please book in Lenox - same goes for Williamstown, Stockbridge or Great Barrington. Berkshire County is small but diverse, every town has its own flavor.
Please talk to us about the flavor of Northern Berkshire County, we are not like South County so the stereotypes of mild, sweet, gentility do not apply.
We are in North Adams, in the old Jewish/Italian quarter. We are on the slope of the approach to the summit of Mount Greylock. If Ilvamorny was a real place, this would be the gatekeeper's house.
The house is a short stroll from Western Gateway Park, MASS MoCA (the largest contemporary art museum in the U.S.A.) and downtown, with sweeping views of the Hoosic River Valley, with the Mohawk Trail and the City of North Adams.
The thing people love the most and dislike the most is our location. That is, of course, the one thing we cannot change for you. Getting AroundPublic transit is sporadic but available in North Adams. Most people use a car. Bicycling is efficient and fun for advanced cyclists but not for novices. We are in the mountains. Runners will find plenty of places to run both in North Adams and in Williamstown.
The town running track and the town's baseball diamond are just down the hill from our house.
The Northern Berkshire Scenic Rail line is also just down the hill from our house. Sometimes you can hear train whistles. Other Things to NotePlease be sure you want to come to North Adams. North Adams is not like Lenox or Stockbridge, we are not cutsey, we are pretty real. The house is our pet project, we are constantly improving the exterior. If external glamor is important to you, our house is a bad fit.
We offer some of our guests admission to the Clark Art Institute at no extra cost, just ask.
Read the listing. Everything you need to know is here.
Food in the kitchen is mostly organic and local. Please avoid cooking meat in the suite, especially bacon.
Parking? Yes. (On the street May to October; on the front yard - which we are paving, reluctantly, from November to April)
Coffee makers, coffee? Yes
Smoking? Vaping? NO
Dogs? Cats? No.
Air conditioning? No.
We are a great fit for travelers interested in history, writers looking for a place to work while on vacation, readers, artists, hikers, nature and museum fans. We are not a great fit for wedding guests. If you are here visiting relatives or attending a wedding, please book a hotel.
Our cleaning fee covers the cost of cleaning up before your arrival. It covers stocking the kitchen, cleaning the bathroom, making beds, washing floors, changing locks, cleaning the glass furniture, and things of that nature. A hotel chambermaid spends 20 minutes cleaning a room. By contrast, we spend most of the day shopping, cleaning and ensuring the apartment is in perfect condition. This fee is applied once for every booking because we like a clean place to stay, therefore we do not skimp. The cleaning fee is non-negotiable.
