Away from the pleasant clutter of Grand Marais, the drive back and forth to Hovland is almost traffic-free and fast. Hovland is also nicely close to Grand Portage (about 17 miles). The price varies by the number of guests: $300/night plus 7% for 1-2 people; $395/night plus 7% for 3-4 people. All payments non-refundable. For payment methods, contact owner. The most beautiful stretch of the beautiful Great Lakes, the North Shore of Lake Superior offers a truly uncluttered, authentic big lake/big woods vacation. Nothing urban or suburban, here! You'll walk the (safe) forests on a few of the 400 miles of hiking trails, poke around the stores and restaurants in the town of Grand Marais nearby, sit on the shore, and then see more nighttime stars than ever in your life (maybe even the Northern Lights). Our private shoreline is flat ledge rock, easily accessible. (Nowhere on the North Shore is there 'beach sand.') Walk over the colorful rocks and find a place to sit on a natural stone “bench” or with your feet in the water. Look at the birds, maybe a few river otters, and the magnificence of Lake Superior in the quiet. Our Main house—designed by SALA architect Dale Mulfinger—sleeps up to 6, and every person will have a lake view from the four private sleeping rooms. One bedroom has a king-sized bed, and above this room is a bedroom/sitting room with a single bed. The bedroom in the other wing is queen-sized, and above this room is a bedroom/sitting room with a single bed and access to an upstairs “astronomy” deck for star-gazing (though standing anywhere outside shows the stars too). Each of these "wings" has a bathroom on the main level. A large great room is in between the two sleeping wings. Kitchen is granite with stools pulled up to a center island. The dining area and living room area of the great room have fabulous lake views also. The décor is Scandinavian-simple with hardwood floors (regionally-sourced), both birch bark and Room & Board furniture, custom rugs, Marimekko upholstery, sheetrock walls, everything in tones of warm white, and mostly black and white. The stonework and gravel areas on the exterior all came from within one mile of the house. (Also, no formaldehyde, urea, etc. in the cabinets.) The dramatic shoreline, a small peninsula for breaking waves, is mostly flat, with some natural “chair” rocks to lean against. Occasionally, river otters fish nearby and the big boats can be seen in the fall (when shipping lanes swing closer to shore). Our second VRBO website describes the Guesthouse (listing #243767) nearby on this more than three acre wooded, Lake Superior property. The two structures are not attached and are completely private from each other - they can be rented separately or together. Both are down one long, wooded driveway and can be seen one house to the other from some but not all windows. Judge Magney State Park Only 4.5 fast miles away to the west, lovely groomed trails lead to waterfalls, a canyon, then along the river. Kadunce Only 10 quick miles away to the west, a smaller river winds through the northwoods with several wooden bridges. Grand Portage Fort and Interpretive Center Just 17 miles to the east, this living history center has a full fort, wigwams, authentic birch bark canoes, and, nearby, the Pigeon River waterfall. Grand Marais To the east 17 miles, this town has the feel of a frontier, but with two different boat tours, four great places to eat (and several good ones), and Sivertson's Art Gallery. Stroll out Artist's Point, too. Chicago Bay Mercantile At 1.5 miles away, this friendly roadhouse has a grocery and a small deli with great sandwiches and pizza. Seasonal Fun: Late winter (late Feb. through mid-April) features bright sun on the snow and a glitter field of broken ice offshore. Hiking trails and ski trails are well packed down, ravens and bald eagles are nesting, and the still-long nights mean spectacular stars. Early spring (mid-April through end of May) means great rock-hounding, the fiercest level of water in the waterfalls, and the blooming of the first wildflowers. Summer (June 1 through mid-August) suggestions include looking for wildlife, including butterflies, wildflowers (the most are in June), the Perseid meteor shower (mid-August), warmer star/galaxy gazing, and great breezes off the lake. Fall (mid-August though mid-Nov.) lasts longer now and the first half of Nov. is “the new October.” It features berry season (late Aug.-early Sept.), lightning over the lake, mushroom season (first half of Sept.), and leaf color. Shipping lanes move much closer to shore by September—so watch boats! Early to Mid-Winter (mid-Nov. through late Feb.) means bright, sometimes violent snow, ice fogs that move in and out like breaths, and the always-green mosses and lichen in the woods. Best Times For… Wildflowers (the true boreal forest ones)—mid/late May-mid/late June Bears—May and June, when the yearling male bears are dispersing and looking for a territory and a furry girlfriend, in kind of a random way (they may pass by, going about their own business) Moose—any day at dawn and dusk around an inland lake, or fall rutting season when roaming around more Naniboujou—the brunch on Sundays, 8 am-2 pm Bald Eagles and ravens—before the trees leaf out and then after they’ve lost their leaves (easier to see and they for sure aren’t engaged in vigorous “childcare”) River Otters—dinner time at Angry Trout in Grand Marais (ask if they’re around today) Birds (boreal species)—late May-mid-June Butterflies—July and August, 10 am-4 pm Dragonflies—July and August Grand Marais summer events (three top): Dragon Boat Festival (races in the harbor); Wooden Boat Festival (beautiful!); Fisherman’s Picnic (carnival)—look on web Grand Marais fall events (two top): fall birding events/classes at North House Folk School; Crossing Borders (many North Shore artists have their studios open, from Duluth to Canada)—look on web The Main House is open 12 months a year. Away from the pleasant clutter of Grand Marais, the drive back and forth to Hovland is almost traffic-free and fast. Hovland is also nicely close to Grand Portage (about 17 fast miles). Rental cost/night (in at 3pm on 1st day; out by 1pm on last day): for two people, $195/night plus 7%; for 3 people, $225/night plus 7%. Our private shoreline is flat ledgerock, easily accessible. (Nowhere on the North Shore is there 'beach sand.') Our Guest House sleeps up to 4, with a sweeping lake view. The decor, in handcrafted hardwoods, is light and airy and includes a large living room/dining room with fresh wicker and wooden furniture, an ample kitchen fully equipped, and a washer-dryer. No wi-fi, no TV. This cabin was designed and built by top Cook County builder Clarence Kemp for his wife and himself. Hand-done millwork, detailed combinations of area woods, a free-standing stove-style fireplace, and lots of large windows give this guesthouse a very cabin-y feel. Two of the sleeping rooms are upstairs, one with a king-sized bed and the other sleeping/sitting room has a single hide-a-bed and a tiny balcony. On the garage level is the other bedroom, with a full-sized bed and a porthole window. This room is more suitable for an older child or a single adult, and there is no bathroom on this level. No vehicle has ever parked in the three-car garage, and we use the space as an extra living room. There is a special patio and a large area of the shore reserved for the guests in this building. The footprint of the cabin is 1000 square feet (all but the one bedroom is upstairs). This cozy cabin provides a perfect getaway and is a gem in all seasons, especially during the fall colors or a blowing winter storm. The timber frame cabin is built on a hilltop, on 20 acres of old growth maples. It is located in Hovland MN, which is 30 minutes north of Grand Marais, near the Canadian border and lake Superior. The timber frame cabin was built only a few years ago. Walls of glass, custom features, a wrap around deck and a screened in porch, bring the outdoors inside. The ridge top location has spectacular views through the trees - with views of Lake Superior once the leaves have fallen. The property also boasts a fantastic new cedar sauna, a firewood shed and a 90' X 90' x 8' foot high fence for pets to run free. The cabin sleeps up to 3 in beds (1 double bed & 1 sleeping cot) and many more on floor and/or outside in the screened in porch. We accept up to 6 guests at a time. Camping is also an option with the wide space. Please email for details. Folks will need to bring: - Sleeping bags/blankets/pillows for beds - Drinking water. There is rain barrel water for washing, but not for drinking. In winter, snow can be melted on the wood stove or gas burner for washing. - Cooler for perishables during summer months - Headlamp or flashlight to get to the outhouse or sauna - Buck saw for preparing kindling from dead ground fall Cabin is equipped with: - outhouse - wood shed & axe (be prepared to make your kindling) - wood sauna - wood stove - gas lights - gas cook top - outdoor cook grill (bring your own charcoal, or use the maple wood that is provided) - dishes, cutlery, pots, pans Cleaning Fee: We do not charge a cleaning fee, so long as the cabin is left in the same condition (cleaned) as it was upon arrival. If the cabin is left uncleaned, a $50 damage deposit will be charged. Getting Around: The road to the cabin is a paved road with the last mile as gravel. There is an unmaintained gravel hill just before the cabin which is rough and can be particularly tricky after heavy rainfall. If you are not driving an SUV you may choose to park where Tom Lake road Y's off and walk up to the cabin. It is an uphill walk for about 200 yards (15min) to the driveway on your left. Keep an eye out for the orange & blue "Mokki" signs at key intersections (off Arrowhead, at the Y at Tom road, at the driveway). Winter access: Access to the cabin once there is snow on the ground is via snowshoeing or walking. Consider the use of a plastic kids sled to help carry in your supplies. When there is snow, the road stops being plowed part way up. When this is the case, there is a plowed parking area approx. 200 yards after you turn onto Tower Rd. It is an open area, on the right hand side (north side) of the maintained road. From here, the walk up is approximately 1.2 miles or 30-45min, mostly uphill. The road is plowed for a bit longer past the parking, but parking should be in this open area. Network Service: There is no cell phone reception at the cabin. You can walk approx 10min further up the road to receive some service. Dogs: We do allow dogs at the Mokki cabin, but we do not allow them inside the cabin at any time. There is a large fenced in area (with fence running underground to prevent digging) in the woods made specifically for dogs. It is located part way along the driveway on your right hand side as you arrive, there is a Mokki sign indicating its location.
