The Space4-Bedroom, 2.5-Bath, full-Kitchen, cathedral-ceiling cottage. IMPORTANT: Price: $370 / DAY, during high-season [late Jun. - late Aug.] The cottage has a SIX-night minimum rental period. All guests must pay separately for meals in the nearby Dining Hall [about $33/day-adults; less for kids] while staying in cottage. Meal charges are usually paid by check directly to the Dining Hall at the end of your stay. Please inquire for more information. This beautiful, old, renovated stick-style cottage is at the end of a long, private driveway off a one-lane, private dirt-road winding through old-growth forest. There's nothing but woods and private trails behind it. It overlooks clear and sandy Higgins Lake, rated "the Sixth Most Beautiful Lake in the World". It's 82 feet of lake-frontage includes a private dock and lido on the lake, down from an overlooking deck, steps away from the large front-porch. The cottage is part of a private Association of twenty cottages, which provides meals at a table reserved for your family in a common Dining Hall -a five-minute walk through the woods. It's perfect for families, as all cooking and clean-up [except Weds. dinners] is provided from June 21 to Aug. 25, so staying here is a true vacation for EVERYONE in the family. [Note: Association rules require that residents MUST pay for all meals in the buffet-style Dining Hall between June 21 and Aug. 25. Rates are $31/day for adults, less for kids under 13 and free under 5.] The lake is clear and, on this side, shallow with great water for swimming, canoeing, sailing and all water sports. Features of Higgins Lake include an island, drop-offs, springs, sunken islands, a swimming raft [owned by the cottage Association], and the mysterious "square anchor". Not far around the shore is a marina, where you can rent motorboats, windsurfers, tubes, kayaks, and all sorts of water toys. With no traffic, kids run free [supervised near the lake, please] and quickly make friends with lake-side neighbors they meet eating in the Dining Hall. The cottage features a beautiful, two-story Living Room [the heart of the cottage] with a rustic staircase, a balcony, and a lakestone-lined fireplace and large Screen Porch, both facing the lake. The view is even better from a large, two-level Private Deck right over the lake on a bluff, a few steps from the Screen Porch. A long stairway down from the deck leads to a private sunbathing area [the Lido] and a private dock where you can swim, nap, and attach boats. [Boats should be moored at anchors off the dock when not in use.] A yard next to the cottage has a fire-pit, many Adirondack chairs, and a pad for the outdoor ping-pong table. A renovated Kitchen with granite counters and new dishes, coffee-equipment, kitchen-tools, and appliances including a dishwasher is open to one side of the Living Room, although you won't cook much, as you'll enjoy the great food in the Dining Hall [from June through August]. Three Bedrooms are on the first floor: [1] a Master Suite with king-size bed and a private Bath with shower and two sinks in granite counters; [2] a Bedroom with two queen beds and a sink; and [3] a small Bedroom with a queen bed and a separate entrance to the Porch. A second Bathroom with a claw-foot tub, a shower and two sinks in granite is off the first floor hall, as is a laundry closet with a new washer and dryer. The second floor is reached from an indoor balcony overlooking the Living Room [and the lake]. Its glass door leads to a knotty-pine Bunk Room with four built-in bunks, which appeal to teenagers and smaller kids [but are short for all but the smallest adults]. In addition to the buffet meals and a swimming raft, the twenty-cottage Association has a tennis court you can use for free and extensive bird-watching and mountain-biking trails, which you can ride through the endless woods, if you bring or rent bikes. This cottage does not have a land-line phone [Recent guests have used their cell phones.] TV or wifi yet, but cable access is available if you bring a TV or router. Nearby activities off the lake include fishing, canoe and tube trips on the calm and beautiful Au Sable River [Rentals available at liveries, or bring your own craft.] and spectacular golf at Forest Dunes, Golf Magazine's No. 2 Public-Access Course in Michigan. Shrink the location map on this Airbnb page, and switch to an aerial photograph to see Higgins Lake in its splendor. The cottage is on the north shore [not So. Main St.], the least developed and most secluded part of the lake. See the photos. Guest AccessPrivate dock, waterfront, deck overlooking the lake, yard with fire-pit and ping-pong table, and cottage [see photos]. Common Dining Hall with buffet-service meals three times/day and private table, reserved for your cottage. Interaction with GuestsWe have a local greeter, who will show guests around and provide a key. She will be reachable by phone. Owners are available by ph(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN), and email, (EMAIL HIDDEN) to discuss any issues. The NeighborhoodLakefront; clear water; view; deep woods at the end of a long, quiet, private road. It's not like home. Getting AroundYou'll need a car to arrive and shop [not too much, since meals are taken at the Dining Hall], but otherwise you walk on pine-needle paths. You can bring mountain bikes to ride in the woods [but not on the main path along the lake, in front of the cottages.] Other Things to NoteThere is a very nice firepit for campfires [no bonfires] and smores and a beautiful fireplace inside if it's chilly in the evenings. If you want to use these, you'll need firewood, hardwood only indoors. We are very paranoid about fires [A nearby cottage burned down a few years ago.] and require complete and thorough extinguishment, by hose and stirring, of all campfires and their embers before leaving the yard or going to bed.

There are 6+ golf courses in the area in addition to a small par 3 course in Houghton Lake. Grayling hospital is only 10 miles away & is one of the top hospitals in the state. There are 3 airports within 2 hours - Traverse City, Lansing, & Flint. Higgins Lake is rated one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. Exquisite old cottage, but with a modern fit-up, and 4-BR's, 2.5-Baths, a cathedral-ceiling; a private dock, lido, deck, at the lake front, all with views.. All meals are prepared in season so there is no cooking from June - Aug. - perfect for families. Please note, however, that all meals [except Weds. dinner] must be taken in the shared Dining Hall in season; the costs of this are detailed, below. This beautiful, old, renovated, stick-style cottage is at the end of a long, private driveway off a one-lane, private dirt-road winding through old-growth forest with monarch trees. There's nothing but woods and private paths behind it. It overlooks clear and sandy Higgins Lake, rated 'the Sixth Most Beautiful Lake in the World'. It's 82 feet of lake-frontage includes a private dock and lido on the lake, down a private stairway from an overlooking private deck, steps away from the large front-porch. This Lakefront cottage in deep woods has over a dozen guest reviews, ALL of them rating it five-stars, on a leading, vacation-home rental-site. The lakefront cottage is part of a private Association of twenty cottages, which provides meals at a table reserved for your family in a common Dining Hall -a five-minute walk through the woods. It's perfect for families, as the Dining Hall does all the cooking and clean-up [except Weds. dinners, when you will probably want to cook out on the Weber grill] from June 20 to Aug. 22: Staying here is a true vacation for EVERYONE in the family. [Note: Association rules require that residents MUST pay for all meals in the buffet-style Dining Hall between June 20 and Aug. 23. Rates are $33/day for adults, less for kids under 13 and free under 5.] Please acknowledge, in your reply, that you understand that, if you stay in this cottage between June 20 and August 22, you will need to pay for meals for all of your guests in residence over four years old. Higgins Lake is clear and, on this side, shallow with great water for swimming, canoeing, sailing and all water sports. Features of Higgins Lake include an island, drop-offs, springs, sunken islands, a swimming raft [owned by the cottage Association], and the mysterious 'square anchor'. Not far around the shore is a marina, where you can rent motorboats, windsurfers, tubes, kayaks, and all sorts of water toys. With no traffic, kids run free [supervised near the lake, please] and quickly make friends with lake-side neighbors they meet eating in the Dining Hall. Please note that the Cottage Association is very much a family-environment, and renting here is inappropriate for party-oriented adults, bachelor parties, smokers, and groups who socialize late into the night. The deep woods cottage features a beautiful, two-story Living Room [the heart of the cottage] with a lakestone-lined fireplace and large Screen Porch, both facing the lake. [See photos.] The view is even better from a large, two-level Private Deck right over the lake on a bluff, a few steps from the Screen Porch. A stairway down from the deck leads to a private sunbathing area [the Lido] and a private dock where you can swim, nap, and attach boats. [Boats should be moored at anchors off the dock, when not in use.] A yard next to the cottage has a many Adirondack chairs and a pad for the outdoor ping-pong table. Because the lakefront cottage and its neighbors are old wooden buildings in deep woods where there may be danger of fires, smoking is not allowed inside or outside the cottage, and, while bonfires are not permitted, campfires are allowed with adults continuously present. They must be thoroughly extinguished with water, according to instructions in the cottage. A renovated Kitchen with granite counters, new dishes, coffee-equipment, kitchen-tools, appliances [incl. dishwasher], & a cast iron sink is open to one side of the Living Room. However, you won't cook much, as you'll enjoy great food in the Dining Hall [June through August]. The Lakefront Cottage features a two-story Living Room w/ rustic staircase, balcony and a lakestone-lined fireplace and Screen Porch. Both face the lake. 3 Bedrooms are on the first floor: [1] Master Suite with king-size bed, closet, and en-suitre private Bath with shower, separate WC, and 2 sinks in granite counters; [2] back Bedroom with two queen beds and a sink [can sleep 4 adults in a pinch, but we prefer 2 adults and a small child or two]; and [3] small Bedroom w/ queen bed and a separate entrance to the Porch. A second Bathroom with a claw-foot tub, a shower and 2 sinks in granite is off the 1st-floor hall, as is a laundry closet with new washer and dryer. The second floor is reached from an indoor balcony overlooking the Living Room [and the lake]. Its glass door leads to a Bunk Room with four built-in bunks, which appeal to teenagers and kids [but are short for many adults]. The Bunk Room has its own half-bath with granite counter. All bedrooms are paneled with knotty pine dating from the construction of the cottage, while the baths all have new fixtures. Note: full capacity would require four people to share two queen beds in one bedroom; they need to be family or close friends. That bedroom has its own sink. Due to the two-person beds downstairs and the low-overhead bunks upstairs, families with children will find this cottage in the deep woods more accommodating than groups of adults. We discourage more than six adults, and cots and extra-sleepers on couches and air-mattresses are not allowed. In addition to the buffet meals and a swimming raft, the 20-cottage Association has a tennis court you can use for free and extensive bird-watching and single-track biking/hiking trails, which you can ride through the endless woods, if you bring or rent bikes. This cottage does NOT have a TV or a land-line phone. [Recent guests have used their cell phones.] A cable connection provides free WIFI. Nearby activities off the lake include fishing, canoeing and tubing on the calm and beautiful Au Sable River [Rentals available at liveries, or bring your own craft.] and spectacular golf at Forest Dunes, Golf Magazine's No. 2 Public-Access Course in Michigan. Guided bird-watching tours leave regularly from Grayling to spot North America's most endangered warbler, rarely seen [except in this part of Michigan, by those in the know], the very rare Kirtland's Warbler. Google an aerial photograph to see Higgins Lake in its splendor. The lakefront cottage is in deep woods on the north shore, the least developed and most secluded part of the lake. See the photos. Congratulations on making it to the end of this long description. In your reply, if you're interested in booking the Lakefront Cottage in Deep Woods, please indicate that you understand that the requirement to use the Dining Hall in season and to pay its extra cost [beyond the rent you pay through Flipkey]; that dogs are not allowed; and that you agree with the no-smoking policy. If these aren't clear, please ask for specific details, since Flipkey may not allow direct communication before booking. More details on the Dining Hall: It is an unusual [and required, in season] feature of this cottage, so please read this part carefully before booking: Three times per day, after reminder bells ring, you walk about five minutes through the woods to an old wooden building with about twenty tables with windows and chandeliers in a big room. One table for each of the cottages and a buffet will be waiting for you. Each table is reserved for a cottage, and we will arrange for a neighbor to walk you there and show you your table when you first arrive at the cottage. You pick up food on china plates [using plastic trays] to take to your table. *Food includes one or two meat dishes, a selection of vegetables, fresh salad with fixings at a salad bar, vegetarian options, fruit, often soups, and a choice of deserts. *Lunch is similar, usually featuring sandwiches, soup, chips, tea, lemonade etc. *Breakfast always offers hot and cold cereal, eggs, pancakes or French toast, fruit juices, bacon or sausage, etc. Some of us don't think the coffee is that great, so we have a coffee maker and grinder in the cottage [and, in fact, a fully equipped kitchen, which you will probably use only Weds. night, when the Dining Hall is closed. Grilling on the Weber is popular Weds., unless it is raining.] Your Dining Hall bill is paid separately [and not included in the Flipkey price]. You provide a credit-card number to the Dining Hall in advance, and then pay the bill when you leave, either by leaving it on the credit card or by check. Please make sure you understand about paying the Dining Hall directly for meals, before booking. A $75 cleaning fee [included by Flipkey] assures that the cottage will look great when you arrive. Another $75 sheet and towel rental fee is optional [We will refund Flipkey charges for them.], as we have found many guests drive to the cottage from only a few hours south and prefer to save by bringing their own linens. The Cottage Association requires that all guests take [or at least pay for] three meals per day [except Weds. dinner] and the Association's Dining Hall when it is open from late June until late August. This rule enables us to hire staff and keep the Dining Hall open, and we are not able to make exceptions. The cost of meals totals about $32 per day for adults; less for children under 13; and free for kids under 5 years old. It is paid directly to the Dining Hall manager. Please contact us by email for rate details or with any other questions, if you need more information about the Dining Hall. The food is a buffet service at a table reserved for your family and an excellent value. The Dining Hall makes vacations here really wonderful for families -vacation without shopping, cooking, or clean-up! We reduce the $150 cleaning fee to $75, for guests who bring their own sheets a towels. Additional fees may apply: - 20 meals/week/person | 33 USD per day Higgins Lake always has at least three shades of blue and green, and the water is so clear, you can see the sandy bottom at thirty feet depth. The cottage, sitting on a bluff directly fronting the crystal clear waters ["The 6th most beautiful in world'] is situated and equipped to take advantage of the view: a giant picture window overlooks lake from living room & balcony, a deck projects above lake, steps away from the large front-porch, and a lido and dock are right on the lake, itself. The waterfront, deck, and dock are not shared, allowing private sunbathing, swimming and boating areas. The lake is clear and, here on the north side of the large bay, shallow with great water for swimming, canoeing, sailing, skiing, tubing and all water sports, esp. for kids. This beautiful, old, renovated stick-style cottage is at the end of a long, private driveway off a one-lane, private, unpaved road winding through old-growth forest. There's nothing but woods and private trails behind it. Its 82 feet of lake-frontage includes a private dock and lido on the lake, down from an overlooking deck, The cottage is part of a private Association of twenty cottages, which provides meals at a table reserved for your family in a common Dining Hall -a five-minute walk through the woods. It's perfect for families, as all cooking and clean-up [except Weds. dinners] is provided from June 21 to Aug. 25, so staying here is a true vacation for EVERYONE in the family, especially whoever does the shopping, cooking, and cleanup. [Note: Association rules require that residents MUST pay for all meals in the buffet-style Dining Hall between June 21 and Aug. 25. Rates are $33/day for adults, less for kids under 13 and free under 5.] You'll eat with your family at a reserved table, but your kids will doubtless make friends with other families eating nearby and have playmates for the whole week. A lake-shore path connects the cottages, and the Association also provides shared tennis courts, swim raft, nature trails, and even a baseball game in which you can participate on Sunday mornings. If you bring a bike, you can ride around the lake one morning, between breakfast and lunch, and if it's a mountain bike, you can ride on private, single-track trails behind the cottages. There's nothing but deep woods and wildlife back there, no other houses impinging on your privacy. Most guests prefer to grill Weds. dinner on a Weber grill in the yard and eat it on the adjacent deck, over looking the lake, while the kids play on the outdoor ping-pong table and roast marshmallows and make 'smores after dinner. However, you can always find a restaurant in nearby Roscommon or beyond. Nearby activities off the lake include fishing, canoe and tube trips on the calm and beautiful Au Sable River [Rentals available at liveries, or bring your own craft.] exceptional bird-watching and nature trails, and spectacular golf at Forest Dunes in Roscommon, Golf Magazine's No. 2 Public-Access Course in Michigan. You'll need a car to get to the cottage, but have plenty of room behind it to park.
