The SpaceThe Cottage (formerly called Bannockburn,) was our first listing with Airbnb in 2014. Since then, we have had numerous five-star reviews. At the end of this description, there are a few of the comments that our kind guests had to say about The Cottage under its earlier listing.
Our hand-built stone cottage is rustic, simple, and perfect for those seeking a stress-free getaway from city living! With 4 beds and 1 bathroom, we can comfortably accommodate 4 people, however, for families or groups that don't mind close quarters, we have two cots and a portable crib so we can adapt to seven people in a pinch.
A spacious kitchen allows you to create custom meals – be warned - it has a lower than normal ceiling (about 7'.) The upstairs bedroom is accessed by a steep, narrow, low-clearance stairway that can be difficult for small children, but there is a "kiddie gate" for use to prevent little ones from climbing unexpectedly. There are two steps up into both the bathroom and kitchen. The bathroom has a shower – no tub.
A most interesting, fun time to visit The Cottage is during our annual spring kidding season when the fields are literally "jumping" with baby goats. Normally kidding occurs during May and June. Guests are welcome to feed limited amounts of snacks to our horses, goats and chickens at no extra charge. Special arrangements can include a goat-milking lesson for children when one of our milk goats is "fresh" for a special fee of $25.
Ask about our discount for clergy retreats and active military personnel. We are located just off of I-44 south and east of Carthage – due east of Joplin, with easy access to area attractions (complete directions will be given after booking. )

We loved being at this home on the range! We were two couples and appreciated the cabin and the surroundings. Even the cat kept close watch on us. Merre baked fresh bread for us and we had wonderful farm fresh eggs for breakfast. Lots of fun for all of us and we all slept well too!
What a wonderful, peaceful getaway(URL HIDDEN)California - April, 2016
Merre was so sweet. We loved the country setting. We walked the land, pet the horses, and fell in love with Jill the cat. The cottage was cozy and clean(URL HIDDEN)Missouri - March 2016
We were looking for a relaxing place where we could enjoy family time, and that was exactly what we found. Merre was very accommodating; there was homemade bread and a friendly outdoor cat waiting for us upon arrival! The neighborhood was quiet and a close drive to town, but also felt like an oasis with the little cottage yard where you could hang clothes out to dry, watch the horses and goats, and enjoy the sunset and sunrise. Thank you for having us(URL HIDDEN)Texas - March 2016
As always, a delightful trip. The Wired Women have been spoiled by Merre. It's the special touches that make it so unique and quaint. She makes us feel like we have known her forever. The fire pit was a treat. Thank you so much for your hospitality. Truly, The Wired Women !! ♡♡(URL HIDDEN) Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas - March 2016
This little cottage was the most wonderful piece of of Missouri. The hostess was the most gracious person I have had the pleasure of meeting. The cottage was exactly what my family needed just at the perfect time. It was clean and inviting, with a full kitchen. My kids loved being able to run and play in the big country yard. The host was always available but never intrusive. I would choose to stay ONLY here next time I am in Missouri(URL HIDDEN) Germany - February 2016
What a very sweet and fun little treasure this cottage is! Don't miss the chance to stay here if you're in the area, even for a night, as we were on our cross country trip. We adored driving in and parking between the big red barn and the little matching cottage, greeted by two super friendly kitties and hearing the goats nearby. We had a lovely evening watching a movie and admiring the beautifully, carefully decorated interior, before waking up to a magical fog-filled morning before we took our coffee out to the yard to explore. A dog herded the goats for a visit before we got to go out and offer the horses a provided-treat in their pasture. Beautiful rolling hills, lovely landscaping around the cottage, a great outdoor patio for working or to relax. Plenty of room upstairs and downstairs for sleeping and making oneself at home, even though it is not a huge place(URL HIDDEN) Indiana - Nov 2015 Guest AccessOn the third Saturday in October, Carthage hosts one of the top 20 Missouri gatherings - the Maple Leaf Festival:
