The SpaceThe Cobblestone House is a historic home that has been updated with modern conveniences, but it still maintains the old farmhouse feel. It's kitchen was the original homesteader's first stick house. Evidence of when the house was added onto can be seen in the extra thick walls where buildings were added on. Guest AccessGuests can walk the 450 acres of the ranch and see all the animal and farming systems we utilize to renovate and regenerate the land. There is an 11 acre lake only 1/4 mile walking or driving distance from the main houses. There are two houses for vacationing guests. If you would like to rent both see the Farm Stay with Mountain Views listing on this site in Fishtail, MT. Interaction with GuestsWe encourage you to take our farm tour, to join us in daily chores or in special projects. We do everything from gardening, to cheese making, to fermentation and animal husbandry. You can be as involved as you like or as little as you like. We understand if you just want to "chill". The NeighborhoodThe foothills of the Beartooth Mountains is a special place. Our neighbors are almost out of sight, in that you really have to look for them. We have wide open spaces and views that will knock your socks off. You will find the people of Montana really friendly and very welcoming. You will likely get waived at from every passer by on a dirt road, it is the custom. Getting AroundYou must have vehicle transportation in Montana due to the expanse of land between stops. In the winter it is advisable to have a high clearance vehicle at least with front wheel drive. Other Things to NoteWe get lots of questions about Montana backroads and what type of vehicle is required. We live here year-round so we keep our road clear for travel. We recommend a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive with good clearance for most of the driving throughout Montana and at our property. We have had many two wheel drive cars in and out with no problem. We live here so we can help if there is a problem.

ADMINISTRATIVE NOTE: THE LAZY E L HAS THREE CABINS AVAILABLE FOR RENTAL SO, EVEN IF THE CALENDAR APPEARS BOOKED, PLEASE CHECK WITH US IN CASE WE STILL HAVE ROOM! THANKS! Since 1901, the Mackay family has been hosting friends and guests at the Lazy E L Ranch. Thirty miles from Yellowstone National Park, the ranch has over 12,000 stunning acres adjacent to the Beartooth Mountains. Come to the Lazy E L to experience over 100 years of history; an endless variety of horseback riding terrain; an authentic working cattle ranch; fishing, rafting, hiking and access to the great outdoors. The Lazy E L Ranch is home to a variety of wildlife including deer, elk, moose, bears, mountain lions, bald eagles, Sandhill cranes, coyotes and sometimes wolves. Some wildlife like deer are very common. Others remain elusive like mountain lions. Some animals like wolves migrate on and off the ranch. Built in the 1930's, the historic Summer Cabin, featuring unparalleled rustic charm, will be your home base. There are four comfortable bedrooms - two with king beds and two with twin beds - some featuring stone fireplaces and spectacular mountain views. Sit on one of the beautiful porches and read a book or just enjoy the view. The Summer Cabin offers three bathrooms and a kitchenette with a washer/dryer. Just steps away, in the main barnyard, you will have exclusive use of the Cook House, featuring a well-appointed commercial kitchen and dining room where you can prepare meals at your leisure. With advance notice, arrangements can be made to have a local chef coordinate, shop for and prepare your meals. In addition, there are two smaller cabins available in the main barnyard - the 2-bedroom Stokke Cabin [with bath, full kitchen, W/D, living room and dining room] can accommodate 4-5 guests and the historic, 1-bedroom [with bath] Russell Cabin sleeps 2-3 guests. There is nothing quite like horseback-riding on the Lazy E L, whether trail-riding through the woods, along the West Rosebud River or through open grasslands among the 2,000 head of cattle that graze the ranch each summer. Riding is arranged through Deb and Steve Mikels, our Roscoe neighbors, who are outfitters and who have been taking family and guests riding on the ranch and in nearby national forest lands for years. The ranch lies across three valleys, spanning from the East Rosebud River to the West Rosebud River. The West Rosebud offers five miles of private river access for some of the best fly-fishing in Montana. The Shorey Cabin, situated on the river near the southern border of the ranch - adjacent to Custer National Forest - is the perfect place for an evening cookout after a day on the river. Shorey's is also a great picnic destination while on a day horseback ride. The Beartooth Mountains offer incomparable hiking opportunities for all levels. The beautiful East Rosebud Canyon connects a series of pristine mountain lakes. Known as 'The Beaten Path,' this trail is for hikers who want to explore up to 25 miles of unparalleled wilderness landscape connecting Cooke City [near the northeast gate to Yellowstone Park] to the East Rosebud. Also nearby, you can hike the West Rosebud to Mystic Lake or explore the Stillwater Canyon with its raging waterfall [a very different experience depending whether you are on foot or on horseback]. In Absarokee, MT, just 15 miles away, you can whitewater raft along the Stillwater and Yellowstone Rivers, guided by Adventure Whitewater, and complete with cliff jumping and frequent bald eagle sightings. To top it all off, there are great dining options in the area. Roscoe [4 miles from the ranch] is home to the Grizzly Bar, famous for its steaks and burgers. Red Lodge, just 25 minutes to the southeast, features some terrific cuisine with choices ranging from the upscale Bridge Creek Backcountry Kitchen and Wine Bar to local favorites including Cafe Regis [vegetarian specialties] and the Red Lodge Pizza Co. Whether you are just looking for a little downtime or wanting to 'take-on' the great outdoors, there is no place quite like the Lazy E L Ranch. You can spend your whole visit discovering all the ranch has to offer, or use it as a base to explore Yellowstone Park and the surrounding Beartooth-Absaroka Wilderness.
