The NeighborhoodWe are located in the middle of the Virgelle valley through which the Missouri River runs. We are 20 miles northeast of Loma and 15 miles south west of Big Sandy. The largest communities near us are Great Falls, 69 miles south, and Havre, 46 miles north. Virgelle consists of the Merc and the Virgelle State Bank buildings, 6 homestead cabins, a sheep wagon, two small barns, a shop, two residences and a grain elevator. The popular Coal Banks Landing launch site for Missouri River trips is just one mile from the Virgelle Merc. One of Montana's three remaining river ferries - the Virgelle Ferry - is also one mile away. The ferry is free and operates from 7am-7pm Mon-Sat, 9am-5pm Sunday. Its season of operation is generally late March/early April through November (around Thanksgiving). Other Things to NoteTraveling to Virgelle takes you on good all-weather gravel roads for the last 8 miles of your trip. Although the roads are "all weather" gravel they can become very muddy and slippery if we have had a lot of rain which does not happen often. If you have any concerns due to weather, please call ahead and we can let you know about current weather and/or road conditions.

The SpaceThe Belt Creek Cabin is a log cabin located in historic Belt, Montana. Belt is in central Montana and is nestled between wheat farms, the Highwood Mountains, and the Little Belt Mountains. Soaring cliffs and precipitous ledges mark the Belt Creek Canyon as it slices out of the Little Belt Mountains and winds toward the town of Belt. Remains of mines, a railroad, and historic cabins line Belt Creek as it makes its way through the beautiful canyon carved in limestone. In fact, Sluice Boxes State Park, which resides in that canyon, is just beyond our front door. Belt gets its unusual name from nearby Belt Butte, a mountain with a belt of rocks encircling it. The Belt Creek Cabin is a log cabin which includes a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, dining area, and living area, and has beds for six guests. Relax outside on the beautiful decks, on which you can barbecue, visit with the local residents, and enjoy the beautiful view. The Belt Creek runs alongside the cabin. Take a short stroll down Castner Street to The Belt Commercial Historic District, which is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Belt was settled as a coal camp in the late 19th century. It is a charming small town, surrounded with opportunities for hiking, hunting, fishing, cross country and downhill skiing, bike riding, bird watching, wildlife viewing, picnicking, photography, swimming, rafting, ice fishing, ATV, horseback riding and historical reminiscing. We have our own renowned brewery, which features Pig Ass Porter, Charlie Russell Red and Beltian White. Please see our Photo page for more information on Things to Do. The local museum captures the history of Belt. Housed in the old town jail, the Belt Museum includes a jail cell, a coal mine exhibit, records, photos, and the work of local artists. Private tours can be arranged to see the Belt Museum by calling Marilyn at (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). Belt also hosts an annual rodeo, spanning three days and attracting competitors from across the west. In an easy day trip, you can even see dinosaurs at the Old Trail Museum in Choteau! If you like ghost towns, check out Barker & Hughsville. In Great Falls, a quick 15 minute drive, you can see one of the world’s largest freshwater springs, which was discovered by the Lewis & Clark Expedition, and flows at a rate of 156 million gallons of crystal clear water per day. Giant Springs creates the Roe River, once named the world’s shortest river in the Guinness Book of World Records. You can see the series of five waterfalls that the Lewis & Clark Expedition spent a full month portaging from the lower falls to the upper. Belt is a great stopping point between Glacier National Park to the north, and Yellowstone National Park to the south. Great Falls International Airport is located within easy driving distance. Make us part of your journey. You won’t be disappointed. See our (EMAIL HIDDEN) for an extensive listing of activities in the area. Guest AccessThe entire cabin is for your use. It is located in Belt and just a short distance away from so many activities. We will send you the information to open the door during the 24 hours prior to check in. We will do that through Airbnb, unless you request otherwise. Please note: our prices include Montana Lodging Facility Tax. Interaction with GuestsPlease call if you have any concerns while staying at the cabin. If I don't answer the phone when you call, please leave a message and I will get back to you shortly. We try our best to meet our guests' needs as quickly as possible. The NeighborhoodPlease see our Photo page for a good look at the neighborhood. The Belt Creek Cabin sits right next to the Historical Downtown District. Belt is a friendly little village, with kind, helpful people. Don't be surprised, if, when you are sitting out on the deck, someone stops by for a chat. There is a small market nearby where you can purchase food you might need, and several delightful restaurants/pubs. Getting AroundYou will not find public transportation in Belt. You will need to have a car for your visit. Other Things to NoteChildren must be accompanied by adults at all times. The cabin is next to the Belt Creek, and also near a swinging bridge. And, 10 min from Fort Benton, official MT birthplace. DIRECTIONS: Great access. Cabin is 50 Mins From Great Falls Int. Airport. Paved road + 1/2 mile excellent county dirt road. LODGING: 2 queen sized beds, living room sofa, & cot. Additional cots/beds as requested. FOOD: Oven, Microwave, Mini-fridge, Grill at cabin. Ma's Cafe only 1.5 mi's away - great food! World-class Grand Union restaurant in Fort Benton. GAME: Cool Storage available upon request. HEAT: Comfortable propane-driven fire place & hotwater heater. POWER: OFF-GRID - reliable 3000 ampere gasoline generator (initial fill-up provided; nearest gas station: 1.5 mi fm cabin). Lights in every room. Comfortable. COMMS: Verizon best for phone service & internet (w aircard). TracFone excellent. Authentic Montana Experience: Most people think of Montana as snow-capped peaks and blue-ribbon trout streams. Yet most of Montana is a combination of smaller yet equally rugged mountains, prairie & badlands, & warmer rivers - with trophy fish & game. This cabin, home to pheasant, hawks, eagles, several species of fish, mule and whitetail deer, & the occasional moose, elk, & grizzly which follow the Teton River down from the Bob Marshall, is the best symbol of this other, larger Montana. And the people in the area are down-to-earth, hard working, helpful and friendly. This is where Lewis & Clark camped, confused which river was the mighty Missouri - there are 3 rivers. The Teton River, made famous through the writings of A.B. Guthrie, a Pulitzer Prize winner, runs for a mile through the property. And two other rivers, including the mighty Missouri, are within 2 miles of the cabin. What To Do - If You Don't Hunt: Recommendations: 1) Fish 3 rivers in one day without setting foot in a car. Pull out a Sturgeon in the Teton River, a Walleye in the Marias River, & a Paddlefish out of the Missouri. 2) Hike or mountain bike to the top of the property. Watch 3 rivers run, simultaneously. The mtns to the east are the Bears Paw, home to 3 Indian tribes. 3) Bring/rent a canoe, raft, or motor boat. If it is early-to-mid summer, put in at the Teton River 100 yards from the cabin, float to the Marias 1/2 mile away, keep going to the Missouri, another 1.5 miles away. (Be sure to wear a life vest.) Drop anchor in each river. If it is late summer, start at the Marias. 4) Take a drive to Virgile Ferry. Cross the Missouri as the local ranchers and farmers have done for a century. 5) Have a meal at Ft. Benton's elegant Grand Union, arguably finest in the Northwest. 6) Take the binoculars and bird watch: pheasant, turkeys, pelicans, osprey, eagles, hawks, owls, and others that nest in the cliffs.
