The Space If you are looking to escape the crowds and enjoy New Hampshire's beautiful Squam Lake region, then the Jack B. Rochester house is the perfect location. Named after the best-selling author who once called this peaceful retreat home, it is easy to see how he would be inspired to pen several of his books here. Tucked into Mt. Fayal, 2 bedrooms and 2 baths offer an ideal escape for a small family or couple. Plenty of natural light showcases original artwork on display, as well as pine floors and comfortable furnishings. Contemporary updates throughout the house provide modern conveniences while keeping true to the rustic setting. No one wants to be doing laundry while they are on vacation, but a washer and dryer are available if needed. The kitchen provides a gas range and dishwasher, as well as basic tools & utensils needed for cooking. A large deck with gas grill is the perfect spot to take in the view, and to relax with a good book. There is air conditioning in the master bedroom for hot nights, although there is usually a wonderful breeze coming off the lake. A boat slip is available at our dock, which is accessible down the hill at the end of the road. There is a boat launch ramp close-by in town. If you bring your kayak, paddleboard or even canoe the dock is a great place to launch from. These can also be rented in town. Linens and towels are available for use. No pets, please - registered service animals always welcome with proper documentation. Guest AccessA boat slip is available at our dock, which is accessible down the hill at the end of the road. The SpaceThe beach and grounds are semi private: they are shared by the owners and the guests who rent the summer cottage. There are woods on both sides of the property and, although there is some road traffic, the property is secluded and quiet and the lake stays quiet all year because it is not open to motor boats over 7 hp. Mostly there are kayaks, canoes and small fishing boats. We do have a no pets policy. Guest AccessYou will have access to the lawn that goes toward the lake and access to the lake frontage which is shared with the summer cottage guests and the owners. Interaction with GuestsThere is usually one of the owners nearby to assist with questions or other matters. The NeighborhoodThe road by the property is popular with people in the town for walking and jogging. The houses are few and far between. Many houses on the road are summer occupancy only. In winter there are some hills to travel on close to the property. The town does a good job of plowing and sanding but sometimes it can be slippery if there is fresh snow or ice. Other Things to NoteBest to locate the property through a map with directions rather than exclusive use of GPS or (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps which don't work well in this location. There are written directions supplied below the AirBnB map.

The SpaceThis home is in a small neighborhood of lakeside cottages, each with their own space. The neighbors often bring their dog, so please be aware of the tree-line boundary. In the other direction is an abandoned camp, so very quiet on that side. The location is so peaceful! You'll see loons, swimmers, kayakers, but also some water skiers. Guest AccessOnly the main level of the camp and all exterior spaces are available to guests. The attic is locked off and anything under the camp, behind the shutters, is not available. Interaction with GuestsWe live less than an hour away and are happy to come by and help. You can also call, email or text me with any questions. Otherwise, there is a key on site and we'll leave you to enjoy the space. The NeighborhoodLocated directly on Little Squam Lake, across from the Boulders Motel and Squam Lakes Camp resort (great for ice cream and seafood!), our cabin is also near the Squam Lakes Science Center and Walter's Basin in Holderness. Just a few minutes drive takes you to downtown Ashland and Plymouth, with many restaurants and the Flying Monkey Performance Center. Suggestions from a frequent guest: Things to do: The camp is perfect for children. It's the last house on a quiet street and it has a nice, sandy beach. There is a great ice cream place right across the lake-we go there after dinner. They also have daily and weekly boat rentals. Polar Caves is about 20 minutes away and is a really neat place to explore with caves that were used by the Indians. The library in Holderness has story walks and story hour during the week. A MUST see is the Squam Lakes Science Center. Pack a lunch and spend the day learning about the native wild animals. There is so much to do and see and they have a terrific kids play area. It's only about 10 minutes away in Holderness. If you don't know how to waterski, ask at some of the marinas on the lake and find someone to give you a lesson or two. It's pretty easy to pick up-my girls both learned when they were 8 years old in one lesson. There is a lovely non-denominational church in the middle of Squam. Even if you are not religious it's a beautiful place for quiet meditation a reflection. There isn't an actual church, you sit on benches under the trees. No electricity either but a pump organ that is cranked by hand. The girls spent many church services cranking away!! It's the one time of the year they insist we go to church. You can only get there by boat-lots of beautiful wooden boats on display. The Science Center runs a ferry but make sure you make reservations. Getting AroundThe closest public transportation would be Concord Coach to Plymouth. Other Things to NoteThere is a fire pit, so the fire permit should remain on the fridge. Likewise, the mooring permit should remain on the buoy. The gaps on the deck railing maybe a little large for some parents to feel comfortable. Please remove your trash to the locked enclosure in the parking area. If it is left outside, the bears and raccoons will redistribute it.

Follow road all the way to the end. Take a left on US Rte 3 through downtown Holderness. From the gas station on the right it is 1.6 miles toward Meredith. The original family still owns this summer home on Squam Lake, built in 1914. The house might best be described as a grand 'camp,' with pine walls and ceilings, and hardwood floors -- built by and for the wealthy. It is one of three summer homes on a 35-acre estate, covering nearly a half-mile of shoreline surrounding a lovely point in Squam Lake. (Squam Lake's water has remained so pure that you can drink it.) This private setting, among the century-old forest of 'Pine Needle Point,' is perfect for family gatherings and reunions. In addition to the six bedrooms (which sleep 12 easily and comfortably) -- all with views of the lake, there are three sleeping porches (two overlook the lake), with platform beds for six additional guests. We furnish pillows and blankets, but request that you bring your own linens and towels. Downstairs, a large living room centers around a large fieldstone fireplace, for which firewood is furnished. The room also has a baby grand piano and a pump organ. An office nook includes a desk, library, stereo system, and a variety of games and puzzles for all ages. The large, eat-in kitchen is fully stocked with kitchen utensils, china, flatware and glassware. Two sinks and prep areas facilitate meal preparation, and promote a social atmosphere. Two additional refrigerators, plus a washer, dryer, and laundry sink, are in the adjoining utility room. The dining room seats 12 comfortably around a large oak table. Hear the loons by lowering the sliding windows into their casements. Long-used maps of the nearby White Mountains adorn one wall. The screened sitting porch off the living room provides an idyllic location in which to enjoy a beverage of choice with friends or family, to have lunch, or just to read, have a quiet afternoon nap, or enjoy the unbelievable lake views. Or stroll down to the gazebo on the point to enjoy the lake in an outdoors setting. And feel free to enjoy a picnic or an evening campfire at the fire pit near the gazebo. It's only a short distance (about 100 feet) from the main house down to the dock, which is 12 feet wide by 45 feet long -- perfect for sitting, sunning, swimming, or securing watercraft (but please -- no jet skis or boats with engines exceeding 25 hp). A swim float is anchored about 75 yards off the dock for your enjoyment. Squam Lake retains its non-commercial, peaceful charm from many years ago, and is a perfect place to swim, fish, sail (our favorite), canoe, and kayak. The Squam Lakes Association, just a mile or two down the lake towards Holderness, rents sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and small electric-motored boats for periods from a half-day up to a week. Squam Lake has numerous coves and islands to see and explore. And Rattlesnake Mountain, seen just behind and slightly to the left of the fisherman in the bottom left photo, affords spectacular views from its rocky ledges (the aerial view of Squam Lake at the top of this site was taken atop Rattlesnake) for remarkably little effort -- a splendid first mountain for children, or an extraordinary place to be inspired by a full moon reflected on the lake. 'On Golden Pond' was filmed a short distance from our camp. If anything, the lake is more beautiful than depicted in that film; but see the movie again to recapture the lake's ambiance. While normal full rental occupancy in the house is 12, we will discuss expanding that number for an additional charge, to meet your family's requirements. A week at the J Bowden Camp on Squam Lake will create many wonderful memories that will last a lifetime -- and bring you back for more. Keywords: house
