The SpaceThis lovely adobe condo is nestled in the Sangre de Christo mountains overlooking the quiet Valdez Valley. It is a southwestern style condo with three stories and a spacious (1,416’), so everyone can spread out and relax. The beautiful, traditional southwest construction has tongue and groove barewood ceilings supported by majestic beams. The thick adobe and plaster walls help keep things warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Our condo is perfect for families (or groups) and is one of the main reasons we purchased it. Each bedroom is on it’s own floor and can comfortably accommodate parents and children. With a private balcony, fireplace and full bath, each bedroom is a self-contained oasis. In the winter, 3 fireplaces (wood included) and baseboard heating keep things comfortable and cozy. In the summer mountain breezes and the open private decks keep things cool and pleasant. The spectacular sunsets and outstanding mountain vistas can be viewed from the large patio (1st floor) or either of the two separate balconies on the 2nd and 3rd floors. In the winter, snuggle in the cozy living room by a roaring fire or, for more privacy, snuggle next to your own fireplace in each of the bedrooms. In the summer, hiking is right outside your door, picking fruit off the trees or another option, or just relax on the balconies and enjoy the best northern New Mexico has to offer. The first floor is the common area has a sleeper sofa, loveseat, and other chairs providing ample seating. This homey area centers on the southwestern fireplace. There is a TV on a wheeled stand, to place whereever you would like. Be aware there is no live tv (cable/satellite). It is equipped with new stainless pots & pans, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, coffee grinder, blender, garbage disposal, all dinnerware & flatware, and basic spices. The first floor also has a full bathroom. Probably the best part of the first floor is the great covered patio that looks west onto the Valdez Valley and the Taos Mesa. Furnished with a table and chairs, it’s perfect for experiencing the northern New Mexico climate. On the second floor there is a spacious bedroom with new carpet. For maximum flexibility, there is a king bed and a trundle bed (2 twins). To help you relax, there is a cozy fireplace. The private balcony is accessed via new sliding doors. There is a private, full bathroom for your convenience. There is plenty of storage for you in the closet and dressers. The third floor has a large carpeted bedroom with a king bed. The trundle bed (2 twins) can also serve as a couch and there is also a bench for seating. New sliding doors lead to the private balcony for those warm evening and the fireplace will keep things toasty on those cool evenings. There is plenty of storage in dressers and closet, and you will have a full bathroom all to yourself. The condo is perfectly located halfway between the world-class Taos Ski Valley and the historic Taos Plaza and it only takes 15 minutes to get to either. We encourage you to visit the artsy village of Arroyo Seco. It’s only 3 minutes away and has a unique New Mexican feel. The condo sets off the main road at the end of a private drive, so things are very quiet and peaceful. We really hope you enjoy your stay in our Southwest mountain retreat. Guest AccessYou will find our condo a welcome retreat after a hard day of skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, climbing, fishing, shopping, gallery hopping, or enjoying any of the numerous activities that this remarkable area has to offer. Here are a few other details: - Please Note: This is a spacious, multi-story southwestern style condo built in the mountains. As such, you cannot access it without going up stairs. Guest AccessGuests will have the entire house and the garden and yard to themselves. Interaction with GuestsUsually not at all or very little, depending upon the guest, i respect your privacy and want to be available should you need anything. The NeighborhoodI love my neighborhood, it is very quiet and the views are fantastic. I seldom have any interaction with neighbors, as everyone appreciates their privacy, but they are great folks to spend time with. i walk daily on the road and in the arroyo behind the house, and there are many trails within minutes of my location.....then Arroyo Seco is just a few minutes drive or bike ride from the house too. it is a small village with shops, restaurants, galleries and plenty of charm... the valley where i live is still very quiet and mostly undisturbed, giving you a sense of what Northern New Mexico was like hundreds of years ago! there are lots of birds and some wildlife to be seen. Getting AroundNot really, although there is a public bus that travels to the Taos Ski Valley in the winter. For your winter visit, a four wheel drive vehicle is recommended, sometimes conditions are such that a conventional vehicle, especially one without snow tires may not be able to get to the house. Other Things to NoteI leave pretty detailed notes for you, there are nuances that are part of my living style in a handmade home!

The SpaceI've just finished totally redoing this casita! It has new mattresses and an entirely new kitchenette and bathroom. The bed is a queen, and the couch pulls out to a full-size bed. I have stocked it with lots of books and board games, and there is wifi. The hot tub is a few feet from the back door, and is walled for privacy, but you still have a spectacular view of the mountains and, best of all, the dark Taos skies. Guest AccessThe hot tub is in a walled enclosure, so you will be totally private there, and it is all yours. I will not even know you are in it! Interaction with GuestsI am on site and available to help with whatever you need. I can also arrange private artist studio visits and other activities. As your accommodations are self-contained, you also have total privacy. The NeighborhoodWhat I most love about this neighborhood is the dark sky at night. The stars are unbelievable, and I can sit in the hot tub for hours gazing at them. It's also really convenient for both the ski valley and town - and the village of Arroyo Seco, which is very pretty and has excellent cafes and shops, is only 2m away. Getting Aroundno convenient public transit. Also, I am on about a quarter mile of dirt road (in good condition). Other Things to NoteI stock the casita with coffee, tea, sugar, and half-and-half, as well as salt and pepper. I can provide anything else you like, by arrangement. Sorry, no pets.

Whether you are an artist, photographer, writer, birder, hiker, skier, or a person seeking solace, you will enjoy the rose-colored sunrise, the fiery Western sunsets, and the brilliance of high desert stars from the patio of native plants and stones while relaxing in a bubbling hot tub. This comfortable, perfectly located, exquisitely refurbished 50-year-old Adobe home designed with a blend of colonial-Spanish and contemporary accents sits on the rim of the arroyo that cascades 200 feet to an ancient pastoral valley, the end of which funnels into the national forest road into Taos Ski Valley. Looking out the picture windows at the high sage plains atop the arroyo, your heart will soar 5000 feet upward cresting the snow-capped Sangre de Cristo Mountains. You are 15 minutes from the slopes, 15 minutes from the plaza, and 15 minutes closer to heaven. In the summer months you will awake to crimson-colored mts as the sun's early morning light blankets the Sangre de Cristo Mts. The air is crisp and the skies a brilliant blue. This is about the time we hit one of the amazing trails along the Taos Ski Valley or the Rio Grande Gorge. This is also the time we take out those fly fishing poles and catch some wonderful trout for supper! In the late afternoon, we enjoy watching the occasional and short-lived showers dance across the mountains...and by sunset, the sky is painted a myriad of colors from orange to magenta and somewhere in between. Just when you think it doesn't get any better, the stars begin to pop out one by one until the night sky takes your breath away once again. You’ll find some of the best southwestern fall foliage -- all to be enjoyed from the comfort of this enchanting home. Here, the aspens range in color from brilliant gold to dark orange. Feast on purple cinquefoil and golden and red cottonwoods. Hikes and mountain drives are breath-taking this time of year. Every season holds adventure here -- and winters are one of the most beautiful and exhilarating! From November to April we enjoy a winter wonderland as we watch the snow fall on the mountains that can be seen from the large picture windows in the living room and all the bedrooms. Because Taos enjoys 300 sunny days a year, we find winter hiking, snow shoeing, skiing, snowboarding, sledding, cross-country skiing, snow tubing, and hot toddy sipping to be some of life's greatest pleasures. Come see and experience all these for yourself. We hope you will enjoy our little slice of heaven as much as we do! A rolling mesa at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains awaits you at this sweet Taos Retreat. The area's rugged beauty, majestic mountains, wild Rio Grande river and unique blend of cultures - Spanish, Native American and Anglo - have historically drawn artists and photographers, evidenced by the plentiful galleries, museums and festivals in and around Taos. It is a place to experience the Native American culture where the Tiwa Native Americans have practiced their traditions for centuries. It is a place to hike, ski, fish, or just enjoy the light as it dances across the mountains -- with its early morning pink light that fades to a burnt orange and finally to a deep purple that introduces a blanket of stars to watch from the hot tub in the enclosed courtyard. Finally, the Anglo influence is prevalent in the business district of Taos just a few miles away, with its shops, art galleries and some of the finest restaurants in New Mexico. Our little slice of heaven is within biking distance (and walking for some – 2.5 miles) to the quaint, artisan village of Arroyo Seco. There's no rat race here; a fair share of non-mainstreamers have made this laid-back, low-key mecca their home. You, too, may not want to leave its tranquility and natural beauty.

The SpaceVisitors report a magic about Casa Sofia, nestled at the foot of Taos Mountain in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountain range. One of the oldest adobe homes in the charming rural village of Arroyo Seco, Sofia holds the history of the region as her namesake did. On Ski Valley Road, a short walk to the village shops, galleries and fine places to eat, a 15-minute drive to the world famous Taos Ski Valley and a 15-minute drive to the Town of Taos. Country setting with horses across the way and buffaloes grazing nearby on Pueblo land. Casa Sofia has all the contemporary conveniences of home and is decorated with a multi-cultural mix of arts & crafts from the Southwest. Spacious living room with kiva fireplace, master bedroom with bath, 2 additional bedrooms with bath, all with queen beds. The 3rd bedroom is reached through its neighbor bedroom or from a door to the outside, making the walk-through optional. The Taos area offers a host of activities including world-class skiing, hikes to mountain wildflowers and waterfalls, white water rafting, hot air ballooning, gold panning, tennis, mountain biking. Taos Pueblo, a 10-minute drive, is the oldest continually occupied structure in North America offering tours, horseback riding, artisan shops and seasonal ceremonies and festivals open to the public. In town there is a rich choice of museums, restaurants, shops, a cinema – including a weekly art film series – classes and workshops. The Taos Film Festival takes place in March; the World Poetry Bout in June; the Solar Music Festival in July, Fiestas in August, the Fall Arts Festival in September; the Balloon Festival in October; the Winter Holidays are alight with luminarias. Case Sofia, cool in summer and snug in winter, provides a lovely retreat for a slow read, revising a manuscript, painting from the roof or doing nothing at all. Climb the stairs or sipapu ladder to the roof deck and sit back for the gorgeous light show of a northern New Mexico sunset, and later, look back on your day in the hot tub under New Mexico's famous star-filled sky. Interaction with GuestsOur team is available 24/7 The NeighborhoodA dream led us to Casa Sophia. It was the winter of 1997. We’d retreated from the constant hum of city life to the home of generous friends out on Taos Mesa. Our first night, silent snow began falling as I sat by a cozy kiva fire reading Pumpkin Seed Point, a book by the Southwest author Frank Waters. I read it straight through. It’s Frank’s tale of his three-year stay on the Hopi mesa studying the ancient cosmology of the Hopi. Mind-altered, I fell asleep and dreamed of a library room where people stood in conversation, including a slender man I took to be Frank and his fourth wife Barbara, a Jungian psychotherapist with big, blonde hair. I could see through Frank to the bookshelves behind him, and I imagined that he was both there and not there. In the morning I found the Waters’ number in the Taos phone book and stammered to the person who answered that I’d been reading Frank’s book in the night and wondered if I might thank him for it. She thanked me for the thought and said that Frank had died in 1995. Might she be Barbara? Yes, she was. “Are you a Jungian psychotherapist by any chance?” I asked her. “Yes I am,” she answered with perfect grace. “Do you happen to have blonde hair?” “Yes I do!” “I’ve been dreaming about you and Frank all night!” I told her, not quite believing any of this. “I think you’d better come up here so we can meet!” she said, believing all of it. “Come up as soon as the snow melts a little.” And so we did. We were met by a Barbara and a committee of her dogs at the door of their historic adobe across the road from Pueblo land. “I think you’re supposed to live here,” Barbara said, “and there’s a house for sale around the corner.” And so we bought the house, naming it for the original owner Sofia, who finished raising her ten children on her own after her husband froze with his sheep one sub-zero winter in Idaho.

The SpaceOur space has a lovely selection of Spiritual and eclectic books that you can check out and read while here. Both the upstairs and downstairs living room areas have cozy fireplaces that keep the ambiance nice during the colder winter months. And the best feature of our home is the natural solar heated rooms with slanted windows on the south side of our house, that on a sunny day can heat up and entire bedroom naturally. This unique feature is available for access upstairs or downstairs. And on a clear night, the views of the stars from the upstairs solar room (accessible from the guest bedroom) is a must see! Interaction with GuestsSince a lot of my creative work and gardening activities are done from my home, I will be around a good majority of the time. Therefore, depending on the flow of my house work I am very available for good quality conversations community meals, or just some lovely tea time chats if that interests you. However, I do also very much understand the need for space and quiet time. So please do let me know your needs while your are here and I will do my very best to accommodate. Getting AroundOur house is quite large, so we can fit up to three extra vehicles in front of our home. Best accessible from a car, our home is only about a 15 min drive to the Taos Ski Valley, 5 min. drive to the little town of Arroyo Seco, 35 min. drive to the Gorge Bridge, or approx. 15-20min drive to the main plaza of Taos (pending the traffic). Both a great spot to stop on your way to Colorado or from Colorado, our home is also not that far away of a drive to either one of the main entrance points to the Enchantment Loop. Also a great see while here in Northern New Mexico. And heading to Ojo Caliente Hot Springs is pretty much a straight shot out from our HWY 150 and onwards. Whether you like hiking, rafting, skiing, shopping or just relaxing and hanging out. We will have lots of great ideas and recommendations for you. Also keep in mind for weather conditions while out and about traveling in Northern New Mexico. We do have the full range of seasons here. So please do be prepared. Other Things to NoteJust for all guests to know. Our kitchen facilities are fully available to use. But note that we are a primarily vegetarian home, so if you are intending to bring meat to eat while here, just make sure it has already been pre-cooked due to the sensitivity of our space. Other than that, we also have lots of great recommendations for places to eat. And storing any of your perishable items will not be a problem as we have one full extra refrigerator available just for you, our guests! So please feel free to choose whatever works best for you! As we love to see our guests happy. Also, coffee and tea are always free available on the house to all our guests. Cheers!

The SpaceThis beautiful old adobe hacienda is the real deal with some rooms over 100 years old, featuring authentic hand plastered mud walls, wide pine plank floors and original hand hewn vigas (beams). The living room floor has its original mud floor which has been painted and sealed to a hard finish. Set under large cottonwoods that shade the compound, the house lies along the Acequia Madre del Rio Hondo, the venerable 'mother ditch' that runs down off Wheeler Peak and provides water to the communities of Des Montes and Upper Hondo. The Main House sleeps up to 8 people. The Guest House is available for an additional nightly fee in order to accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 small children. Both houses together can accommodate up to 12 people. Across the street from Casa de Musica is the ditch trailhead, a lovely 45 minute walk that takes you along the rim of the Arroyo Seco 'llano' (high plain), with dramatic views of the Valdez Valley on one side and the sweet sounds of the rushing waters of the Acequia on the other side. It is the perfect morning walk before you gear up for the National Forest Trails just minutes further up the road towards Taos Ski Valley. The Main House is 2000 square feet and sleeps up to 8 people. It has a formal dining room for entertaining, a large, inviting sunken living room with a kiva fireplace, 2 well-separated bedrooms with comfortable King and Queen beds, 2 full bathrooms with Talavera tile, and a bedroom/den with a comfortable foldout Queen size futon bed with memory foam mattress topper as well as a "full" size platform bed with a comfortable mattress. There is also a long single couch/daybed in the living room that can be converted to a single bed. All beds in both houses have cotton bedding and we use eco-friendly cleaning products wherever possible at Casa de Musica. The Main House kitchen is large and well equipped with dishes/utensils, 2 ovens, gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster, coffeemaker, blender, and high quality pots and pans. The entire compound is on a whole house water filtration system at the well-site, and the kitchen has an additional high quality under-the-counter-system for further water filtration. The Main House and Guest House have good Wifi reception in every room and there is a widescreen TV in the den in the Main House which is set up for wireless streaming from your computer and also for DVD viewing. The TV does not offer cable or any local channels. There is a diverse collection of family oriented DVD's and music CD's in the Main House for your use and we suggest you bring your own supplemental favorites for the kids. There is no TV in the Guest House. There is a telephone for incoming or local outgoing calls, or you may use a prepaid phone card for outgoing long distance calls. As with many areas in Northern New Mexico our Taos cell phone reception is inconsistent. The house has a garage with remote control opener and plenty of room for one vehicle and your ski equipment There is also ample parking in the driveway. There is a fire pit and a charcoal fired grill on the patio and plenty of comfortable chairs for lounging with friends and family. You can stroll out into the orchard, take a nap in the hammock, have a picnic lunch under the plum trees, and if the season is right help yourself to the apples, apricots and wild plums. We are located in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood with wonderful neighbors, however we do have BEARS in the Fall. The previous owner was an elderly woman who installed bars on the windows for this reason. They are black bears and are extremely shy, but in the Fall months they sometimes will traverse the Village at night looking for fruit in the orchards, bird feeders to raid, and accessible trash cans. For this reason we have left the bars on the windows and always ask that people not leave food out on the patio overnight during the Fall months. We have decorated Casa de Musica with our personal collection of antique Native American and Persian rugs, traditional Mexican Saltillo blankets, and beautiful Native American art. We are sharing our extensive library collection of books on topics from local wildflowers and birds to Native art and architecture, plus a large collection of fiction. There is plenty of great bike riding right out the driveway and we can provide several cruiser bikes for your use. This property offers a very unique, peaceful getaway for anyone who loves being outdoors and wants to enjoy all that this beautiful area has to offer. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do! Guest AccessIf your party consists of more than 8 people, or you want to spread out, then we offer the Guest House option that can sleep up to two more adults and two smaller children for an additional $150 per night including an additional $85 cleaning fee. It is 2 stories with a separate entry and is 700 square feet. It offers lovely tree-filled views upstairs with a comfortable California King sized bed, full bathroom with Talavera tile and a sunny, open living area. Downstairs it offers a small efficiency kitchen (microwave, fridge, sink, coffeemaker) with 2 comfortable built-in smaller kid-sized beds with colorful cotton sleeping bags for a "campout" feel. Interaction with GuestsAvailable by phone in case of questions or emergencies. The NeighborhoodThe charming village of Arroyo Seco is a laid-back little artist community just north of Taos which offers a little something for everyone. Small specialty shops, restaurants and services provide for memorable experiences just waiting to be had. Many of the shops exhibit work by local artists and crafts people. For up-to-date info on news and events check out (URL HIDDEN) Getting AroundThe Chile Line offers public transportation between Taos and Taos Ski Valley. The bus stops at various hotels in town and at Arroyo Seco on its way to TSV. Cost is only 50 cents one way. The only limitations are that the bus only seats 28 people and there are only four schedules per day. Other Things to NotePlease note that the Main House only sleeps up to 8 people. If you would like to rent the Guest House for an additional fee ($150/night plus $85 cleaning fee) you may request that option. The Guest House is not available for rental by itself, only in addition to renting the Main House. The Guest House rental is NOT included in Airbnb's initial quote to a guest. Just notify me after booking the Main House that you would also like the Guest House option and I will send you an Airbnb "Special Offer" that will reflect the rental cost of both the Main and Guest houses and also includes the required 7.125% local tax.

No peepads. No pooping in the house! I can't believe I had to say this. Guest AccessThe living room has a banco (a large window seat) with a wonderful view of the valley and mountains, a signed kiva fireplace built by a local legend (this 73-year-old Hispanic genius - a grandmother - climbed on the roof with a chainsaw to cut the hole for the chimney!), and a satellite TV with over 100 channels. A single futon in the living room is available for sleeping, as is the couch and a large window seat (banco). A complete laundry room comes with washer and dryer, a fully equipped kitchen with colorful Mexican tiles, a romantic bedroom with down comforters, a queen-sized bed and a kiva (traditional New Mexican fireplace). This old home is a local landmark with a wonderful view out over the Valdez Valley to the Sangre de Cristo mountains from two covered porches.. wonderful for writing, painting, or simply getting away from it all. Interaction with GuestsWe are always available by email and can visit if you need help -- The NeighborhoodWe are in a semi-rural area only 15 beautiful minutes up the mountain to the ski lift, five minutes to the charming town of Arroyo Seco with great restaurants and shops, and a lovely 20-minute drive back to town! Getting AroundWe are on a paved road which is plowed and sanded in the winter. You will need a car. Other Things to NotePlease be aware that we do not provide breakfast :D This from a recent review: "Thank you for all the wonderful touches you made to ensure the casita and house are so strikingly beautiful while retaining the comfortable feel that welcomed us every time we stepped back in the door. Even in the middle of the night, when I got up I smiled looking from the bedroom door into the living room and seeing the easeful lines of the fireplace by starlight. Your efforts struck the right chord for us....Stan was particularly taken with the window seat as a perfect spot for him to sit and play guitar...and he has his eye on the one in the house as a warm spot with winter sun streaming in the windows. Oh, and your lovely paintings...I've never before understood why New Mexican paintings had a different quality to them, but spending time with the paintings in the environment that inspired them, I get it and I love it! I particularly love your night sky paintings - one in the casita and one in the house by the dining table....then there's the one of the valley that I love, and on and on and on...."

It features an old kiva fireplace as well as a woodstove (if you know how to use it) and we also have radiant heat, skylights, saltillo tile floors, a sensational bathroom and a high old viga beam ceiling in the living room. Sit on the large portal (porch) in the front to enjoy the cool breezes, or on the charming patio off the kitchen with it's firepit and special view out over the Valdez Valley. The living room has a banco (a large window seat) with a wonderful view to the West and the sunset over the mesa. A handmade mullioned window adds special interest -- really comfortable furniture, lots of good books, a satellite TV with over 100 channels and wireless internet. You'll sleep peacefully in the intimate, romantic, charming bedroom -- it still has an old hand-painted paned window typical of original Taos houses, little nicho with a special light, an old dental cabinet for some of your things, a large closet and a really comfortable queen-sized bed. As you can see, our bathroom is very special too. We think you'll love it! Interaction with GuestsAlthough we are not often home to answer the phone, we respond promptly to email, and our telephone number is posted in the rental if you need us. The NeighborhoodThis is a semi-rural area. Paved road. Awesome view out over the Valdez Valley, west to the mesa, and back to the mountain. It is very quiet and peaceful here. Getting AroundYou'll need a car. The Rim Road is paved and is plowed and sanded in the winter if there's snow. (There's been lots this year!) Four-wheel drive is not necessary Other Things to NotePlease be aware that we do not provide breakfast :D This from a recent review: "So warm and cozy. We thoroughly enjoyed the fireplace. . . The kitchen was huge and had everything we could have needed. The house is what those of us not from the Southwest think of when some says Taos; beautiful colors, Southwestern artwork and accents all over the house make it seem high-end and very live-able, the way a hotel never can. The best room in the place is certainly the bathroom: heated floors, unique fixtures and that shower! As much as we enjoyed the house, our dog enjoyed it even more. HUGE fenced yard for any dog to breathe in that wonderful mountain air.

In the owner / designer's words: "Two upstairs bedrooms have ceiling fans, most windows have sun shades. I know this is more technical than the information you are asking for, but I designed this house with both natural heating and cooling foremost in its design. 1) Exterior walls are 14 inch think adobe walls which provide a 12 hour delay between the days heat and nights cool temps reaching the interior of the house and provides a large thermal mass. 2) South windows have an overhang which allows winter sunlight in to warm the interior while shading the higher summer sun. 3) East and west facing windows use a special heat mirror glass that rejects the sun's radiant heat while letting visible light in. 4) The concrete slab is 12 inches thick throughout and 24 inches thick near the south facing windows to provide additional thermal mass I've been in the house when the outside temperature was 100 degrees and felt very comfortable." From Premiere: "All of Taos keeps their windows open at night to allow cool air to build and close / cover windows during the day to keep the cool temps going and hot air out. Works like magic. 4 wheel or chains required for 2 gentle 20 degree short slopes that can be the last to be plowed on snowy days. Additional amenities include: coffee maker, cookware, washer & dryer.
