There's a lot to like about Albany's Eagle Hill.
For starters, the historic neighborhood, which sits south of Western Avenue (State Route 20) between Tryon Street and State Route 85, is a great location if you work in Albany -- and particularly if you work in one of the buildings on the W. Averell Harriman State Office Building Campus or at the University at Albany. Eagle Hill is just west of the State Office Campus and just east of UAlbany's uptown campus; it's about a 5-minute commute to either from the neighborhood's furthest reaches. It's also close to the College of Saint Rose, St. Peter's Hospital and Albany Medical Center.
Eagle Hill is a tranquil, pretty place with narrow, tree-lined streets and small city lots with a mix of housing styles. You'll find cottages, Cape Cods, brick ranches and raised ranches, split-level houses and bungalows. The area also offers easy access to public transportation and is close to synagogues, churches, and downtown eateries and nightlife.
Eagle Hill take's it name from the Historic Hill and Landmark Cemetery (mid-1800s through mid-1900s) on Western Avenue just West of the Harriman State Office Campus entrance.
The Eagle Hill section of Albany was originally almost exclusively undeveloped land, which was later divided up and sold off as garden plots to immigrants living in downtown Albany who used it to plant gardens and vineyards. Eventually many of these same people, having been displaced by construction of the Empire State Plaza, built homes here and part of the area acquired the nickname "Little Italy." Getting AroundThere is a CDTA Bus stop right across from CVS on Western Ave, about a 3 min walk. Eagle Hill is bounded by the Harriman campus to the north, parts of Krumkill Road and the State
Thruway (Interstate 87) to the south and Route 85 and the Buckingham Lake neighborhood to the east.
Nearly a dozen Eagle Hill streets connect with Western Avenue, which leads to State Campus Road -- the entrance to the Harriman campus. State Campus Road links with Route 85, which intersects with Interstate 90. An on-ramp to Route 85 is accessible via Daytona Route 20 west leads to an on-ramp to Interstate 87, also known as the Adirondack Northway. It continues west to Colonie and Schenectady. Western Avenue east leads to downtown Albany. Other Things to NoteA Comparison between my
